Is it possible to turn off the icon Preview function?

Hi all-
Is there a way to turn off the icon Preview function in OS X?
It’s particularly annoying especially when I open a folder with video clips in it and the Finder whirrs away trying to give a Preview for each file. It wouldn’t be so bad if the Finder remembered the icon, but everytime you open the folder it goes through the same process again! Plus, unless you’re using giant icons you can’t see what the preview is showing you anyway! I’m quite happy to have the ‘generic’ icon and allow the file name to tell me what the item is!

There is no specific function that turns FGL on or off.
When you say that it has stopped, do you mean that the handles no longer show?
If that is the case, then I think you may have modified the CSS to such an extent that Dreamweaver no longer recognises it as belonging to FGL.
There are a couple of avenues for you
Redo the site and make sure not to touch the FGL CSS
paste the code here so that we can see what has gone wrong.

Is it possible to turn off the e-mail function on the pearl?

Hvae got a user who wants to turn off his email from time to time on his BB pearl - it's a strange one for sure and something that I don't think is even relevant as you cna always ignore incoming emails etc. But it's quite a seinor person who is pushing for a definitive answer. And I just don't know 100% what the answer is.
I would be veyr grateful if someone could give me a yes or no answer so that I can close this issue off.

Is it possible to turn off the screen when using Time Lapse or Motion Detection modes so as to save power?

I have downloaded the user manual off Camileo S20 and searched a little bit but unfortunately I can find no informations about turning off the screen when using Time Lapse or Motion Detection. It seems that the screen is always on.
But you can connect the AC adaptor while recording movies. So you have always power. :)

Is it possible to turn off the Apple dock completely?

I was wondering if it was possible to turn off the Apple dock completely without causing irreparable damage to my system. I am considering using Drag Thing, but when I am using it the functionality seems redundant with the Apple dock, also using both programs in tandem uses up more precious memory. The Drag Thing website links to the following tutorial as a solution:

But it was published a long time ago, and I don't want to do anything rash that would damage my system, I mean I don't dislike the Apple dock enough to do that. Thanks in advance for the consideration and suggestions.

I could only discover an option to hide the dock from within Drag Thing. I am looking to make the dock disappear completely. Drag Thing does not officially support this option, giving this answer in the Q & A section of their website:

I’ve seen a couple postings that say go to Settings --> General --> Passcode Lock, but on my iPhone 4s I don’t see anywhere to turn it off at that point. In the manual, there is no description of turning off the passcode – at least I didn’t find it.

Here is a screen shot of what you get when you press "Passcode Lock".
You have to ENTER your passcode first, to access the part of the Settings that allows you to disable the passcode lock.
Enter your passcode.
Then you can turn the passcode off.

The Kinect v1 SDK had a function ForceInfraredEmitterOff(), which could be called to turn off the infrared emitter without having to close the Kinect. This was very useful for applications using multiple Kinects as it provided an easy way of preventing interference.
I am using 3 kinects with overlapping field of views to create a large field of view for a project and I would like to be able to control the infrared emitter like I did with the v1.
I looked in the SDK documentation and on the web, but found no method that could do what I want. So, did I miss something ?

That is exactly what it means: to have a system using two Kinects you will need two computers with two Windows 8 licenses (one each), one communication path between these computers (TCP/IP seems like an obvious choice) and some way to make sure they don't
interfere each other...
As far as Carmine answer goes, it is not satisfactory: OK, I understand that my Kinect is shared by all the applications running on my computer .... MY computer, meaning that I know which applications need the sensor and which ones don't (unless some unknown
background program is spying on me.... wouldn't want to shut off the IR to prevent that program from working now...)
So, why not give programmers a way to shut off the IR and if someone runs many programs on the same computer and does not want to shut off the IR then they just don't call that function ... this way everyone is happy.
SO, in the end here is the solution my company decided to implement: we used to put 3 kinects on each of our system to have a very wide field of view. This year we plan on selling about 75 of these systems, that would have meant buying 225 Kinects. Now,
since we can't turn off the IR (a functionality that would take any programmer about 10 minutes to implement by the way), we will buy only 75 Kinects (one per system) and mount them on a linear axis. It is acutally going to cost less money to buy one linear
axis and move the camera instead of buying 3 cameras with 3 computers with 3 windows licenses and developping some sort of anti-interference solution.

'Never' can be removed so as to protect a company's potentially sensitive email - they may not want the iPad being left/stolen with the emails on it accessible. How can I turn off the autocomplete / autofill function in Mail (Mail 7.2)? I know how to remove email addresses from the 'Previous recipient' list, but I simply want to deactivate the autocomplete function for email addresses entirely.
You used to be able to do this via Mail - Preferences - Composing, but I upgraded to Mavericks today, and the option to deactivate the autocomplete funtion for email addresses is no longer there.
Does anyone know where to find it?

Usually Escape would make me exit the text box
Is there any chance you mis-remember? The Keynote shortcut for exiting text editing and selecting the text box is ⌘↩ (command-return).

Also, how strong is the wireless signal? If placed in a basement of a residential property, is it likely that the signal would reach two floors above?

Open AirPort Utility - Click Manual Setup
Click the Wireless tab located just under the row of icons
Wireless Mode = None
Update to save your new settings
You can reverse the process to turn the wireless back on when you are ready.
Also, how strong is the wireless signal? If placed in a basement of a residential property, is it likely that the signal would reach two floors above?
It's just not possible to accurately predict wireless performance in advance for any installation. A guess would be that the signal will be very weak, and likely unusable, but you won't know for sure until you try it out in your house.

Is it possible to turn off the menu bar on secondary display?

I have upgraded to Mavericks on an iMac used exclusively for presentations (not mirrored) and now the menu bar shows up dimmed on the presentation screen if there is not a presentation currently playing. I have not found any setting for turning off for that display. Can it be done? If not Apple please add this option ASAP because it looks very unprofessional to have the menu bar pop-up on the presentation display in between presentations.
Has anyone found a solution to this problem?

It worked but needed some further finessing to perfect.
After unchecking "Displays have separate Spaces" and logging out and back in the menu bar was gone but however now it showed the same desktop picture as was on the primary display. That was highly undesireable as I was trying to get rid of anything being shown on the projection screen when a slide show was not playing.
I played around with the "Desktop & Screen Saver" preference pane and discovered that I could still change the Desktop pictures of each display separately -- whew! I was worried there for a while. Not sure why it didn't just keep the original solid black desktop setting for that display as that would have been ideal but I was able to change it back to the solid black setting as before and now it just looks like the projection screen is off whenever a slide show is not playing -- perfect!
Let me just say to Apple that the whole process was very unintuitive and couldn've been solved with just a simple checkbox in the "Displays" preference pane to turn off the menu bar for the alternate display. So may I kindly suggest you consider adding some sort of option to do that in the Displays preference pane where it would be much more intiuitive than "Mission Control --> Uncheck Deisplays have separate Spaces."
