Is it possible to upgrade a mid 2012 Mac Pro to USB 3.0?

My Seagate portable Free Agent Firewire drive died under warranty. Seagate stopped making portable FW drives and replaced mine with a Backup Plus Slim 2.5 USB 3.0 bus powered drive.
I have a 4-Core Mac Pro (5,1) running Lion, 24 GB RAM.
I know I can run the drive in one of the Mac Pro USB 2.0 ports but only get 2.0 speed.
I checked Sonnet's Allegro USB 3.0 PCIe card. The card will run in a my computer fine, but doesn't support 2.5 bus powered drives.
Anyone know if anyone makes a PCIe USB 3.0 card that will support a 2.5 bus powered drive, and support booting off it?
Thanks,
Steven

The Allegro does say it's compatible with Mac Pro and OSX 7 - 9. But not 2.5 bus powered drives. Ugh.

Sonnet Technical Notes
<edit> Bus-powered 2.5" drives or SSDs are not supported.
Does not support booting OS X.
While getting the above, I just noticed Sonnet makes another PCIe: Tango with 2 - USB 3.0 and 4 - FW 800 ports, and these specs don't mention not supporting 2.5 bus powered drives. So I just fired off an email to their Tech Support and we'll see. I'm sure it's more expensive than the Allegro with just a few USB 3 ports, but if it works...
My prior Seagate drive was a FW 800 and I found that a tad slow but tolerable. But it died under warranty and Seagate no longer makes it or any FW portable drives so they replaced mine with their latest drive, which is USB 3.0. They even bumped me from 1.5 TB to 2TB since they don't make 1.5 TB drives anymore either.
Since it's brand new in the box and not a refurb, I may just eBay it if I can't find a PCIe for it and get a FW8 drive like you suggest and like I used to have. G Tech makes a nice one, albeit expensive. There are others that are less expensive like OWC, good idea. I'd love to find one that disapates heat better hoping it will last longer.
Thanks Kappy

  • Yosemite Upgrade on mid 2012 Macbook Pro

How does the Yosemite upgrade perform on Yosemite upgrade performance mid 2012 Macbook Pro with 2.5Ghz i5 processor and 16GB RAM?

I haven't had any problems on several upgrades. You should do this in advance as a precaution:
Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions - Yosemite, Mavericks, Mountain Lion or Lion
    Boot to the Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
    Repair
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility and press the Continue button. After Disk Utility loads select the Macintosh HD entry from the the left side list.  Click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If Disk Utility reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit Disk Utility and return to the main menu. Select Restart from the Apple menu.

  • 4K Graphics Card @60Hz for Mid-2012 Mac Pro

Does anyone know which aftermarket graphics card supports 4K at 60Hz on the Mid-2012 Mac Pro? I can't seem to find one that does in any current forums.

Sapphire Radeon HD 7950 Mac Edition and Geforce GTX680 Mac Edition should work in your MacPro, and is able to do 3840x2160 or 4K under Mac OSX 10.9 Mavericks.
    even newer cards though.

  • CC 2014 Update Makes My Mid-2012 Mac Pro Worthless

    Hi All,
I've been a big fan of working in Premiere Pro for about a year. Sure there have been hangups and frustrating technical issues, but nothing you wouldn't experience using Final Cut or Avid. However, the latest big 2014 update has rendered my workstation completely useless. I'm not even sure how to describe all the the things that are happening. Crappy, digitally broken renders, unusable exports, barely existent playback, and crashing. My god, the crashing. Some projects won't even function for 5 minutes before wrecking the system, or even downright shutting down the computer. As in, the computer is running, and then literally 10 seconds later, the computer shuts down entirely on it's own without me touching anything. It's always nice enough to flash a jagged, pixelated render malfunction of some sort right before this happens. I've never experienced such horrifying software problems. And while I have by no means given complete or cohesive scientific descriptions here, I'm just curious if anybody else's life has gone to hell since this update? What and I doing wrong? My computer is only 2 years old! There's no way it can be obsolete already! Below are my specs. Any and all advice/consolation is appreciated.
    Mac Pro (Mid 2012)
    Processor: 2 x 2.4 GHz 6-Core Intel Xeon
    Memory: 24 GB 1333 Mhz DDR3 ECC
Graphics: AMD Radeon HD 7950 3072 MB
    Software: OS X 10.9.4

Glad to know I'm not alone, Yonkondy. One thing I just tried that seems to be helping performance a lot is to hold down the Shift+Option keys while the project is loading up. This clears the preferences. It won't look like anything happens initially (there's no dialogue box or anything to tell you that the preferences have been cleared), but I was finally able to save my project without it crashing! Baby steps I guess, haha.

  • Help!!! Prethunderbolt imac as a 2nd monitor for mid 2012 mac pro

Hi.  I have a 2.8 GHz Intel Core i7 imac (pre-thunderbolt) running 10.6.8 and I'd like to use it as a 2nd display for my new mid 2012 2.4 GHz 12 core Mac Pro running 10.8.2.
I bought a mini display to mini display port cable made by NewerTech.  Both computers are up and running.  I've connected the cable from the Mac Pro to the iMac, hit command f2 on the imac and nothing happens.
Does anyone have any idea why this isn't working?

    2-4 SSDs
    4x2TB WD Black
OS and apps are only thing on the SSD system drive
You may not be able to do everything at once, but RAM and an SSD (Samsung 840 Pro 240GB)
Dedicated scratch array or drive (SSD would be good here too)

  • I am not seeing how, if possible, to connect a mid 2012 macbook pro to an external monitor

  • Memory(RAM) upgrade on a Mid-2012 MacBook Pro

Hello Apple fans and users. My Mid-2012 MacBook Pro 13" is a bit slow. It has 2x2GB DDR3 1600MHz Ram and when I open more than 4-5 tabs in Safari it becomes really really slow. So that's what's bothering me and I have decided that I need to upgrade my RAM to more GB's. I have iStat app and it shows me that more 3/4ths of the RAM is being used when I have more than 4-5 tabs open in Safari and when my iTunes is playing a song.
So Im from the Netherlands and what I found is this:  http://www.alternate.nl/Corsair/4-GB-DDR3-1333/html/product/922656?tk=7&lk=9331
It even says MAC Memory. I find this good because it is supposed to be for a MAC, but my only concern is that my memory right now is 2x2GB 1600MHz, and the one that Im currently looking at(at the link) is only 1333MHz.
Do you guys think this might be a problem or it is bad or is it going to be a NOT SO GOOD upgrade? Im not very good with computers but from what I know 1333MHz is less than 1600MHz...
    But I also found this -> http://www.alternate.nl/Kingston-ValueRAM/4GB-ECC-DDR3-1600/html/product/1118143 ?event=search
and it is 1600MHz, DDR3, 4GB BUT I AM NOT Sure if it's gonna work on my laptop because it is a MAC.
So what do you guys think? Which one should I get and why? Is there a difference between 1333MHz and 1600MHz? And what is it? How am I gonna feel the difference?

As BobRz says, get the right speed, or you may have problems.

  • After upgrade to Mavericks, AppleTV no longer mirrors my mid-2012 Macbook Pro's accessibility zooming.

Prior to Mavericks upgrade, I had accessibilty zooming enabled using the control hotkey with two-finger scroll.
The zoom effect would be duplicated in AppleTV and transmitted to an overhead projector in my classroom.
This feature is very useful for directing student's attention to a particular region of the screen.
However after the upgrade, AppleTV no longer mirrors the zooming effect.
I can see the zoom on the laptop, just not on my projector.
I can see zooming on the projector if I use the VGA adapter and plug directly into projector.
    Laptop:
    mid-2012 Macbook Pro
    OS X 10.9
    8gb RAM
    2.3 GHz Intel Core i7
Have tried variety of displays settings and none work including:
--selecting best for display or AppleTV
    --changing the resolution
    AppleTV
    model: MD199LL/A
    software: 6.0 (6646.65)
resolution: 1024x768 60hz (my projector requires this)
    Projector:
    HP vp6320
I use an HDMI to VGA/Audio adapter to convert to VGA for my projector.
I seem to recall that overscan correction was an option to set under Mountain Lion, but I can't find that when doing a Spotlight search in System Preferences. Not sure if that would help or not but thought I'd mention it.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Same problem. Zoomed image will not show on the Apple TV screen even though it does show on your laptop or desktop.
I tried every aspect of System Preferences>Displays and Accessibility. None worked. Problem was presented to an Apple Specialist on his Mavericks computers and his Apple TV. Same thing. He said this appears to be a Mavericks glich and immediately went to transmit the problem to Cupertino.
A poor "work around" is to use System Preferences>Accessibility and under Zoom, select Zoom Style "Picture-inPicture" which will result in a "zoom box." The box can be scaled to a desired size and activated with the Control-Scroll motion. This box will display zoomed on the Apple TV screen. The default Zoom Style selection "Fullscreen" did not and will not show on the Apple TV screen even though it does show on your laptop or desktop
The problem: the zoomed "magnified" image loses resolution and if zoomed far enough, becomes "pixilated."
 Apple needs to fix this or tell us how to go back to the earlier Control-Zoom which I think the "Fullscreen" was intended.

  • HT204144 Possible solution to non-visibility of a mid-2012 mac in iOS 8's airdrop

    Hi,
I have been just wandering for quite a night over the web to find out a solution to this particular issue (no mid-2012 mac visible in Airdrop on iOS).
So, I seem to have found it and must share it here:
the airdrop started working bidirectional for me after I had changed the following settings to "off" (or whatever it may be called in English version of Yosemite): system settings - network - bluetooth PAN - IPv4 configuration -> off.
If it works for you, please share further, because the problem seems very common with no solution readily offered.

Cannot see the iPhone in your example. In fact I have NO BLUETOOTH devices showing EVEN WHEN I HAVE A BLUETOOTH connection with a Mac (iOS still doesn't work in Airdrop). MacPro= late 2012. Macbook Pro late 2010 (given up hope on this one).
The two computers can see each other...
Airdrop works OK on my 2013 iMac, NOT on 2012 MacPro, 2010 MBP.

  • Does OS Lion 10.7.5 support Airplay mirror of Apple TV 3? I can't find the option in Setting Display on my mid 2012 MacBook Pro.

Does OS Lion 10.7.5 support Airplay mirror of Apple TV 3? I can't find the option in Setting>Display on my mid 2012 MacBook Pro.
I've rebooted all 3 devices, still does not work. Both Apple TV and MBP are on the same wifi. And the Apple TV AirPlay option is on. Can someone help? Thank you.

    About AirPlay and Airplay Mirroring
AirPlay Mirroring requires a second-generation Apple TV or later, and is supported on the following Mac models: iMac (Mid 2011 or newer), Mac mini (Mid 2011 or newer), MacBook Air (Mid 2011 or newer), and MacBook Pro (Early 2011 or newer). For non-qualifying Macs you can try using Air Parrot.

  • Occasional restarts on mid 2012 macbook pro after ram install?

    Hi,
Recently installed 2x4gb Corsair Vengeance DDR3 memory to my mid 2012 Macbook Pro 13" to upgrade the ram to 8GB.
Since then i have been having almost daily forced restarts, where it says it has to restart because of a problem, i believe it
    is a kernel problem.
Also have been experiencing many repeated "Aw Snap" messages on Google Chrome although this could be unrelated.
The specifications for my mac are:
    OSX Mavericks 10.9.2
Processor: 2.5 GHz Intel Core i5
    Memory: 8 GB 1600 MHz DDR3
Graphics:  Intel HD Graphics 4000 1024 MB
Has anyone had any problem with this type of memory? I believed it would work when i bought it.
Original memory was 4GB that came installed in the Macbook Pro.
Other than occasional restarts, everything seems to work fine other than "aw snap" messages on latest version
of chrome (have tried disabling extensions, making a new user profile, reinstalling Chrome, none of which has worked).
Would appreciate any help, advise etc. Will be reinstalling original memory, see if the problem persist.
    Cheers
    Tom

The RAM must be stated by the manufacturer to be compatible with a mid-2012 MacBook Pro.
    Just because it says:
    1600 MHz PC3-12800 DDR3L SDRAM SO-DIMMs (204-pin)
Does not mean it is compatible.  It must say mid-2012 MacBook Pro RAM.

  • Crucial M4 128GB VS Samsung 840 120GB - Mid-2012 MacBook Pro

I would like to put an SSD in my Mid-2012 MacBook Pro. As the tradition HDD is a real bottle neck the system. Space is not really an issue, but price is at the moment. It's between these two, Crucial M4 128GB VS Samsung 840 120GB, just to be used for everyday use, thoughts?

I'm a huge Crucial fan - I have a 512GB Crucial m4 SSD series installed right now and am eagerly awaiting the shipment of the Crucial M500 960GB SSD. One thing that I love about Crucial is that you can accomplish firmware updates directly on your Mac - with Samsung, I believe, you have to use a Windows machine.
Crucial SSDs are perfect for Macs - many of us around here have them.
The only problem that I see that you may run into is getting the data from your hard drive (you don't say how much space you're using on it) to a 128GB SSD. If you're under 128GB on your HD then you can just clone your data and OS, etc., onto the new SSD. Or you can make a 'fresh' start and format the drive and install the OS and then begin the laborious task of adding your apps back.
See my one and only user tip - Upgrading your MacBook Pro with a Solid State Drive - for some tips on transferring that data. I've always used Carbon Copy Cloner - but then I've always been moving to a SSD that was comparable in space to my 'old' HD.
    Call back with any questions...

  • Mid 2012 macbook pro glitching, freezing, overheating

Starting a few weeks ago, I noticed a change in my mid 2012 macbook pro. My laptop was losing charge EXTREMELY quickly, I would charge the laptop to 100%, and just an hour later (after not using it, but the lid closed and it was sleeping) it would be up to 60% charge, then when not in sleep and on, it would lose energy extremely quickly. I always make sure that unecessary background apps are not running--so that was not the problem. This problem went away after a week, but it was the first signal that something was wrong with my laptop.
Next, the laptop was having problems with waking up from sleep, I did an SMC reset and this problem was fixed.
After that, the laptop started glitching (static and banded lines on the bottom of the screen) and making this clicking noise when I was streaming video fullscreen on Netflix. I thought at first, that this was a problem with Silverlight, and reinstalled the silverlight plugin (several times). Then I noticed that the computer would glitch when I was streaming full screen on Netflix and picked up the laptop (moved it from a flat surface). This signaled to me that the problem was perhaps not software, but a hardware issue. I verified the disk and did a permissions report and neither were curative.
Further support that the problems are with hardware rather than hardware came to me when my computer presented itself with a fourth issue: the laptop, when being lifted or moved from a static surface, would sometimes freeze entirely and make the same clicking noise. This problem was not during fullscreen streaming, but had spread to when I was simply using more than one app at the same time (e.g. having Chrome and Word open together). When this happenend, the only solution would be to power down the computer and restart.
Finally, while sleeping with the lid closed in my backpack, I hear a whirring noise--I pick up the laptop and it was hot to the touch, overheating with the fans running on high speed.
I have no clue what is going on. I have taken the computer to my university's mac shop and they have suggested it is a logic board issue and I should give the computer in. I have scoured the forum for an answer of what is happening and am determined to find one. So I pose the problem to you--any help would be appreciated. Thank you.
