You don't need to restore anything.
Just upgrade. That replaces Snow Leopard with Mountain Lion, without disturbing anything else.
But by all means, always keep up-to-date backups, in case something goes wrong.

Ok, that sounds like a valid approach...but now the question is, when you say you lost the upgrade when you tried to restore, exactly what do you mean? Restore from a Time Machine backup, or another kind of backup? What happened to the operating system when you did that?
If it damaged the operating system, you should be able to recover it by restarting your computer holding either the Option key (should result in a grey screen that shows the macintosh hard drive and a recovery hard drive), or by holding the Command and R keys while starting.
You can use the recovery hard drive to reinstall Mac OS X either way. If the Option key restart, click on the recovery hard drive to boot from that.
Then with either approach you will have a screen with a drop-down that gives you choices, such as install Mac OS X, Disk Utility, Terminal. You will want to use Install (or Reinstall) Mac OS X...note, you must be connected to the internet from this point on.

I'm thinking about purchasing a used Macbook 2007 (MA895LL/A) 10.6.3 is currently the installed, will I be able to upgrade to Mountain Lion when it is released? How so? Would I have to upgrade to 10.7 first? (New to Macs, from Windows)

So OS X is bloating up now starting with 10.7 as it's a 64bit OS and no 3.5GB RAM limit like before, so your RAM limit of your older machine now has to be taken into consideration as a performance limitation.

BTW, you can put 2 3-GB RAM modules in that machine for 6GB, Apple only says 4GB as that's all they had at that time.

I can tell you not too many happy campers on 10.7, it's rather depressing with it's gray/black backgrounds and not friendly to desktop UI users
Spaces and Exposé is GONE in 10.7 for something called Mission Control which isn't quite as good as you can't see 4 or 16 screens at once like Spaces did.
OS X is turned more like a iPad UI too.
Anyway it takes some getting used too, you might want to employ it on new hardware instead.

HELP! while upgrading from 10.6.8 to mountain lion on MacBook pro encountered Mac HD error. Verify indicates Repair Disk needs to run but it will not highlight. Verify Permissions indicates I do not have access. Reinstall does not work. Tx. Freaking out

Assuming Mountain Lion did not install, you'll need to boot up from your Snow Leopard DVD (by holding down the C key while you reboot).
Once you've booted from the DVD (be patient, it's not exactly lightning fast!), you'll want to go to Utilities --> Disk Utility...and run Repair Disk.
The problem you're seeing is that there's something not right with your MacBook Pro's hard drive, and Repair Disk cannot be run on the same volume you booted from.
If Repair Disk was run successfully when you booted from the Snow Leopard DVD, and you see indications that whatever was wrong was corrected, you can now boot back up again from the MacBook Pro's hard drive. Once you're up and running on the internal hard drive, try installing Mountain Lion again.

On the desktop or in a Finder window, select your volume.
With the volume selected, press the space bar.
Quick Look will display the total disk space on the volume, and the amount of free space available.

I'm currently running OS X 10.6.8 on a MacBook Pro 5,1 - Core 2 duo 2,4 GHz, 4Gb Ram.
I want to upgrade to Mountain Lion 10.8.4.
Do I simply buy the new OS from the app store and run it to upgrade the OS? I'm new to Macs so not quite sure how this works.

Check to make sure your applications are compatible. PowerPC applications are no longer supported.
Application Compatibility
You can also check by going to the  menu, select About this Mac, click on More info…, then click System Report and select Software/Applications.
If you have applications that you want to use that aren’t compatible, you can retain Snow Leopard and create a new partition to install Mountain Lion on or you can run Snow Leopard server in a virtual mode.
If you can/do upgrade, I recommend you make a copy of the installer and move it out of your Applications folder. The installer self-destructs. The copy will keep you from having to download the installer again. You can make a bootable DVD/USB stick to install using this free program.

I want to upgrade my brother's computer from Mac OS X 10.5.8 (Leopard) to Mac OS X 10.8.x (Mountain Lion).
Fromt the many discussions already posted, I gather the following:
- I need the Snow Leopard DVD to upgrade to Snow Leopard
- I will then receive a code to redeem for the ultimate upgrade to Mountain Lion
I attempted to phone Apple Support, but I was stopped when continued support required AppleCare. Either of the following may obtain: 1) my brother's iMac AppleCare plan has expired, 2) he never bought one.
Question:
-Is there a way that I can follow the procedure outlined above (1- obtain OSX Snow Leopard and then 2- download the Mountain Lion upgrade using a purchased code, for $20) without spending an additional sum ($20) on an otherwise unnecessary AppleCare plan?
-Point being: is it necessary to spend double in order to obtain this upgrade DVD? Is there another means by which I can obtain the Snow Leopard DVD?

First check if the Mac can run Mountain Lion. A Mac running 10.5.8 is getting pretty old and may not be up to running the latest. It might be better just upgrading to 10.6.8 and stopping there.

However, to answer your question:
You can ring an Apple store and order the 10.6 DVD. You don't need Applecare to do this. Also you don't need to prepurchase MountainLion, you just buy it at the App Store. So you will be needing to buy two OSs'
You do need to be updated to 10.6.8 before you buy Mountain Lion at the App Store.
