Is it possible to upgrade on a new HD without original installation disk?

My situation is a little complicated.
I've had my MacBook Pro for almost three years. For the past few months, I've been having some problems with a very loud droning, buzzing sound coming from the lower-right quadrant. I can only use my computer for a few hours to watch or edit videos before it starts making this noise and I have to shut it down. I posted about this a couple times before and the only response I got was that my hard drive probably needs to be replaced. So since I, nor anyone else, seems to know what the problem is, I'm probably just going to do that. This is where it gets complicated.
My original installation disk for Tiger is, presumably, at my parents' house 1500 miles away, if it still exists at all. I want to upgrade to Leopard anyways (so I can play Sims 3), but I think that it's pretty much impossible without the original disk for Tiger. I figured I would need to use my Tiger disk to set up the new hard drive, and then upgrade to Leopard straight away. Is there any possible way to install Leopard on a new hard drive without having to buy the full system (not just the upgrade)? I was thinking I could call Apple and beg and plead for a replacement Tiger disk, but I would probably just be wasting my time.
I'm starting to think that my situation here really is hopeless and my computer will never be able to be useful to me again.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you for the speedy reply. That looks like just what I was looking for. I'm going to go buy that right now and I hope this is the end of my searching for a solution. Thanks so much.
I have one question though (it may be stupid, but I'm not very literate on Macs): will the program back up my whole operating system or just my files? Like, will I be able to install the OS from the backup?

  • I have some adobe programs of version cs3. Is it possible to upgrade to a newer version? Possibly cs5 or newer?

There are some essential features I need for my work that I aren't available in cs3, so I was wondering whether it is possible to upgrade this version to cs5 or 6, or to CC. If this is possible, is it a free upgrade or can I pay a lump sum of money for an upgraded new version. I am definitely not prepared to pay a huge amount of money for a new version when I have already paid for cs3. Can anyone help me out?

No you cannot upgrade from CS3 (too old).
You can still buy CS6 (full version) Creative Suite 6  or rent CC.

  • If the 4th Gen won't get iOS 7, would it be at least possible to upgrade to the new "FaceTime Audio"?

If Apple doesn't offer the upgrade of iOS 7 for the 4th Gen iPod Touch, is it possible to upgrade FaceTime to the new version that has "FaceTime Audio"?

There is no way to know unless Apple announces.
Thre is not reason ot believe that this will happen.

  • After upgrading to a new 3GS, my original iPhone won't activate...

After I upgraded to an iPhone 3GS, I restored the original iPhone with iTunes. Now, the iPhone says it's got an invalid SIM in it, and when I plug it into iTunes, it won't activate it. It's basically a brick now.
Was I wrong in thinking I could now use the old iPhone basically like an iPod touch?

I haven't seen any press release that supercedes that, but the one you reference refers to the ORIGINAL iPhone, not a 3G. There have been posts here and elsewhere indicating that the restore/upgrade function no longer works on the 3G once you update to 3GS.
I suppose the original poster can put a phone call in to AppleCare to see if they might be able to get some help from them. I didn't make this rule, I am just reporting what everyone else is seeing, with or without the SIM card in the 3G.

  • Can you upgrade to the new iMovie if originally from an iLife disk?

I have a MacBook Pro early 2011 model. It came with the mac app store, and the iLife dvd which contained iMovie/iPhoto. Can I still update to the new releases of iMovie and iPhoto for free or do I have to buy them all over again through the Mac App store.

Yes. See this Apple article - http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5975
    Best of luck.

  • Is there anyway I would be able to trade in my Macbook and upgrade to a new one without paying full price?

    Your help is much appreciated!

Not at Apple unless you purchased it within the last 14 days. Apple will give you a small bounty for recycling.

  • Upgrading to Windows 7 with Lenovo original recovery disks

    Hi all,
Here is the question. I got my x301 recently with Vista Ultimate on it. From the looks of it Windows 7 will be released soon and it appears to be much smoother system, hence I would like to migrate. Here is the question - would you reckon it will be possible to obtain from Lenovo a set of recovery disk which would return your machine into original factory condition, same as on Vista, but with Windows 7, whenever the new OS is out. Even if official free upgrade will not be available, I'm happy to pay for the licence upgrade or for the new license. The key concern is to burn original recovery setup on my disk, as if it would've been shipped with Windows 7.
Anyone got here similar experiences ? For example moving from pre-installed XP on machine to Vista in such a way ? And what are the opinions ?
    Thanks !
    Regards !
    X301, 128 SSD, 4GB, Vista 32-Bit Ultimate

the decision to do this will be on microsoft, not lenovo.   if microsoft offers a vista > 7 upgrade path then lenovo will be allowed to sell recovery media to customers who can prove current ownership via MTM/SN and COA.   if microsoft doesn't offer such a path then you'll have to purchase windows 7 via retail channels.

  • How to migrate to a newer phone without original itunes?

Hello.. I have an iPhone 3G running version 3.1.2. I'd like to upgrade to a 4S or maybe 5. When I first got the 3G I had a Mac G4 MDD running 10.5 and I used iTunes to manage the phone. I also used "push" to sync the phone, the Mac, and my MobileMe account (emails, calendars, contacts, etc..)
Fast forward 4 years... That Mac is dead. There is another Mac (a G4 Mini with 10.5 on it) and an older version of iTunes that has my entire music library on it. I also have a PC w/ XP that can run iTunes 10, but I don't know what will happen if I sync a phone to an XP box. I'm afraid to plug in the phone because I don't want that message asking me to wipe out the phone and marry it to a new iTunes. MobileMe is gone. I did switch to iCloud but lost a lot of sync ability because the phone OS is so old. My calendar lives only on the phone. I also have apps purchased via the phone that are not backed up to iTunes.
So... What do I have to look out for if I switch to a new phone? And, how do I connect it to a new iTunes (The PC has iTunes 10, but the Mini has all the music) somewhere so I can manage it?
    Thanks for any help!
PS - I salvaged the hard disk from the dead G4. I have an ATA to firewire adapter but a power spike one day blew the only firewire port on the Mini, so no booting to target disk mode to fix this. I also have an ATA to USB adapter, so I can mount the drive on the Mini and salvage files, if need be. I can't mount it on the PC because it's an HFS+ volume.

I'd agree with Bob. There's no problem installing CS4. You can download a clean install from here:
    Other downloads
You may need to clean off the stuff from Time Machine with the Adobe Cleaner here:
Use the CC Cleaner Tool to solve installation problems | CC, CS3-CS6
But if you have no serial number, and no proof of purchase, you're still out of luck.

I have deactivated the copy on the  iMac. Please help,

  • Where do I go to buy new Mac OS X Installation disks?

Our beautiful little Labrador Retriever helped herself to my Mac OS X Installation disks (and my credit card, driver's license, and wallet). I've been on Ebay and Amazon. There is one selling on ebay for the 10.5.2 but our iMac is 10.5.8. What will work, what won't work, and where do I go to buy?

    Hi,
You can get replacement System Install & Restore CD/DVDs from Apple's Customer Support - in the US, (800) 767-2775 - for a nominal S&H fee. You'll need to have the model and/or serial number of your Mac available.
Do not get the discs from eBay. Apple only. From eBay you do not know what you are getting. Amazon sells retail discs, not Apple installation discs.

  • I currently have an old version of Photoshop - CS, is it possible to upgrade?

I currently have an old version of Photoshop - CS, is it possible to upgrade to a newer version? It keeps crashing on my new Mac (Macbook Pro 2GHz Intel Core i7 running OSX version 10.6.8) and I don't use photoshop that much (probably once per month to design gig flyers) so I cannot justify spending $1,168 for the current version of CS6. I don't want to try and learn a new product either, I just want to be able to use Photoshop without it crashing. Please help!

From CS - CS6, there is no upgrade option possible. The last version that Adobe lets you upgrade from is CS3 (that too, till December 2012). Adobe usually supports current minus 2 versions for upgrade support.
In your case, you should buy a full version - yes I know it is expensive and having said that you need it only once a month, I don't know what to advice here.
Regarding CS not running on 10.6.8, are you getting any specific error codes/ numbers/ crash reports? If so, can you please post that here so we can see what may be going wrong?
While I doubt CS will work on OS 10.4 or 10.5+ (I've never used it), I can't say it never will work either. The only way to tell is to see a crash report to see what is going wrong.

  • Is it physically possible to upgrade the Graphics Card contained within the Mid 2011 Mac Mini that starts @ $799 (The one containing a AMD Radeon HD 6630M w/256MB)?

Simply put, I may occasionally use a handful of high-demand video games on this device. An AMD Radeon HD 6630M w/256MB dedicated is a decent card, but may fall behind on the more demanding games, especially if I keep this system for an extended period of time. And if, sometime in the future, this device still stands but I find I require a more potent graphical source, is it physically possible to upgrade this piece of hardware without irreparably damaging the machine, regardless the methods needed?
I would be more than willing, at that time, to void the warranty if it still stands and perform extensive deconstruction of the device, or have qualified computer repair workers do so for me. I just want to know if it can be done reasonably. I am aware that if this were the Integrated Intel HD graphics 3000 ONLY version, this would be impossible since that system is connected to the motherboard itself. I am hoping this is not a similiar case
Worse case scenario, it turns out to be entirely impossible, and I will either have to look into other possible devices (should the price of SSDs drop soon, the iMac models as of late look encouraging, but only in that lower price scenario) or make the most of the 6630's capabilities, which I honestly doubt will be too terrible.
Before answering in the negative, please attempt to investigate every possibility.

Nope, the "Integrated Graphics" aren't really a video card at all.

  • How can I install Aperture on my new Macbook Pro. I am up to date with my Mac Pro, I have the Aperture 1 and installation disks but cant remember how I got to 3. Can anyone help?  Many thanks regards Alf

I have an up to date version of Aperture on my Mac Pro, and I would like to install it on my new Mac book Pro. I have the original installation disks for Aperture 1 and 2. I cant remember how I got to Aperture 3, I think it was via a web download but not sure. I have checked my purchases in the App Store but there is no indication of me buying an upgrade to Aperture 3.
Ive tried to download it from the App Store but it wants me to pay again.
Can anyone help on how to install Aperture 3 on my new Macbook .
    Many thanks regards  Alf

Then you can download the Trial version of Aperture 3 and unlock it with your serial numbers - you will need all three for all three versions: A current link to the Trial version is in this support document, also instructions on how to reinstall on different systems:
Aperture 3.4: May quit unexpectedly on launch after updating
    Regards
    Léonie
BTW: Your Aperture 3 serial number will be displayed in the "About" panel - the panel you see, when you use the command "About Aperture" from the Aperture menu in the main menu bar.
