Is it possible to Upgrade Quicksilver 733

Is it possible to upgrade a Quicksilver 733 machine with a dual 867 daughter card?

Hi-
A dual 867 from a MDD?
No.
You can use any of the Quicksilver processors; 800, dual 800, single 867 and 933, or dual 1ghz.

  • FCP 5 & Quicksilver 733 - bad idea?

    Hi!
I've got a Quicksilver 733 and wanted to know if it's stupid to even think of buying FCP even if:
    a.) i upgrade my processor,
    b.) upgrade my video cards
    c.) upgrade to Tiger
I'm going to make the upgrades at least a & b no matter what...
    Advice, please!!

Do the math. I don't think you can add that stuff up and get a number that's much less than a used monster G4 or the minimum spec G5. Pulling some figures outa my hat,
    CPU upgrade: $300, video card: $250, Tiger: $130, more RAM: $500; that's about $1k.
The Quicksilver maxes out at 1.5G RAM, not much for Tiger and FCP. FCP may or may not install since it looks for Apple CPUs and may not recognize a foreign unit. And, even if you could get it to install and run, you won't be happy with the performance.
    So, I say absolutely not.
Keep your ol' QS for your email and Web stuff and network it to your new Macintosh.
Quick google got me a used Dual 800 mirror door with all the toys and 1g RAM for $1,500.

  • Can I add a 1.8 GHZ Dual Proc to a G4 Quicksilver 733 MHZ Single Proc comp?

I just acquired a G4 Quicksilver 733 MHZ Single Processor/120 MB SDRAM Model Number: M8493
    Can I add a SG4D-1800L 1.8 GHz DUAL Processor to a G4 Quicksilver 733 MHZ Single Processor/120 MB SDRAM?

    Dear TGH
Adding a dual 1.8 GHz processor will significantly reduce task times, obviously those that are processor intensive. I have just added the dual 1.8 GHz processor to my (former) 733 Mz Quicksilver G4. I also added a faster harddrive and more memory, but it was the Processor that really made the difference.
I do some music conversion, vinyl to MP3, and some of the software processes for cleaning up the music were quite time consuming with the 733, anywhere from 3 to 15 minutes per run. These have been reduced to 30s to two or three minutes, so a five-fold speed gain.
Overall, the whole computing experience has benefitted from the upgrades, the multi-tasking and leaping from program to program is crisp and speedy.
Putting in the Sonnet software was a real exercise; I seems for some it is straightforward and for others it is problematic; it is a fragile process. Here are the highlights of my experience....
*OS9* - You need to boot up in OS 9 at least from one disk in your computer. I had an old OS 9 system disc still in the hard drive, but I could not boot up successfully. The OS 9 startup kept freezing. I begged and borrowed OS9 install discs but none of them worked either.
The solution for me was to copy the OS 9 system folder to another hard drive in my computer, that was blank and did not have OS X already one. It was a clean hard drive that I partitioned for a small OS 9 boot disc, and the rest will be a place to keep various projects. From the "clean" disc there was no problem booting up into OS 9.
You need OS 9 for installing the special software that Sonnet provides on a CD. It doesn't matter if the OS 9 disc is separate from your OS X disc and programs, in fact for me it was preferable.
    *Installing the Sonnet software*
You start your system up in OS 9 and run the installation disc from Sonnet. At least that's the theory. First you have to figure out how to make your keyboard work in OS 9. I had to unload drivers off the internet. Then I could open folders and click on buttons as necessary. When I first ran the installation CD it crashed. The old "bomb" box showed up and everything froze. Again and again.
You need to look at each of your PCI cards, and video card, and either move them or update their drivers and firmware. I installed drivers or firmware for both OS 9 and OS X where I could.
Eventually the planets lined up right and the Sonnet CD software downloaded and ran.
The second part of the Sonnet install is restarting your computer and using the programmer button
(the teeny tiny button on the front of my G4) during restart to trigger the firmware revisions. *The Instructions in the book from Sonnet are not right for all Quicksilver G4s.*
The Instructions say to hold the programmer button down while pressing and releasing the power button for startup. Once you hear a "tone" you release the programmer button. For my Quicksilver (which I think is the 2002), you have to hold both buttons down until you hear the tone.
There is no mistaking when you do it right. The tone is heard, a progress bar comes up on the screen, and then after normal startup a dialogue box tells you that the patch to the firmware is in, or it is not. If it isn't then try again. Once I figured out how to do it right, I only had to do it once. Don't be fooled by the Sonnet extension that loads in OS 9 startup, it doesn't mean you necessarily patched the firmware right. You have to hear the tone, see the progress bar and read the message after restart.
Then you can restart in OS X and run that updater available from the Sonnet website (Encore Firmware Updater Installer v.3.1). It is an OS X program, not OS 9. I ran it and it told me all was well that the patch was as it should be. I have read of others who thought it was necessary to runs the program.
    *Installing the Processor*
Installing the processor is a piece of cake, especially after suffering through OS9 startup failures, balking mice, installer crashes and firmware fixes that didn't take. You need a screw driver and your eyeglasses. It takes minutes.
So Good Luck, and enjoy the project. I thought it was worthwhile, though I would sure like to see a different process for jigging up the firmware.

  • Mac Pro's (early 2008) Back up plan towards a possible OS upgrade to Yosemite

Hello All. Here’re some of the details/background info…hopefully all this won’t be so annoying. Your feedback is highly appreciated. Thanks a bunch!
I have 2 Mac Pro’s (Early 2008) 3,1 both running SL (10.6.8). One I have been using non-stop throughout these years, I’d call it MP 2008 (A). The other one once belong to a friend who actually bought it around the same time I purchased mine, only that he didn’t use it much and just recently decided to sell it to me. I’d call it MP 2008 (B). Both MP’s are very light on data on the main, boot HD, just applications,… as everything I work on is kept in external hard drives and backups. I do not usually download any third party stuff (only when strictly necessary for my work) and essentially it’s all about the software and applications (Adobe CS3 and LR 0.2) I need to do my pretty basic work.
All pretty old stuff by now, I know.
Following a couple of mishaps and lots of good advice in these forums, (thanks to the hatter, etc.) I went ahead and bought 16GB of RAM for both, and an NVidia Graphics Card (all from Amazon.com) for my MP 2008 (A) to replace it after it went bad, and everything has been working just fine. As you can tell, I have not tried to upgrade much, but rather keep everything stock and running as smoothly as possible.
I am afraid the next big, important thing I MUST do is back up my almost 6 years-old HD (I know, it should’ve been done long ago). Frankly, I have never done it before because I didn’t even know that could be possible…I learned about it right here, in this forum. In this sense, much I have also read (here) about the SSD option, and about how great of an upgrade that could be too, but I have decided to stick to the regular 3.5” for now. (I just recently found out those SSD even existed!). Hopefully, once I gain a bit of confidence on how this works I’ll jump into the SSD option, cards, etc. So, I purchased 2X 3.5” SATA III HD’s to try cloning my MP 2008 (A) boot, main HD and get this process over with.
    QUESTIONS
QUESTION #1: After installing the internal hard drives in bays 2 and 3: Do I have to specifically format them in order to turn them into bootable copies? If so, how do I do that? I have read about using ‘Disk Utility’ to format external hard drives for this purpose but I don’t know if that would apply for internal hard drives as well.
QUESTION #2: What are the settings/features you all recommend I should select/or deselect on CCC so I can have exact, bootable copies of my original HD? No fancy stuff, advanced options, etc…just what I need to have good enough copies that just work.
QUESTION #3: How do I test them?
I noticed that under “System Preferences/System/Startup Disk” I can select the drive/system I want to use to start up my computer from. My question is:
QUESTION #4: Can I permanently choose any of the Mac Pro four (4) bays/bootable hard drives as the main drive/system for startup? I always thought I could only be done from the original, ‘main’ bootable drive in bay 1.
QUESTION #5: What if the copy fails? How do I go back to the HD that works or to the next copy, for that matter?
About my MP 2008 (B): In an effort to sell me his MP, my friend (as knowledgeable as I am) messed up something that delays the start up a lot. I noticed that in the finder, the applications appear double, etc., so I am not so happy with it. Even though the little house icon has his name in the finder, he was able to make me the Administrator for the machine (I don’t know how). But again, it starts up to the typical chime, then a gray screen for quite a loooong while, then the apple logo, then the loading animation…and theeennnn it starts…and no known issues from there. In other words, I am sure he messed something up there while transferring this machine to me and now its startup is so delayed.
QUESTION #6: Let’s say that both the bootable HD copies I created on my MP 2008 (A) work fine: Can I take one out and install it in my MP 2008 (B) and eventually turn it into my startup drive and work from there too? Will this eventually lead to conflicting stuff? (Two machines, same identical cloned start up drive??).
Eventually, the plan is that I learn how to do all this so I can move on and upgrade with a clean install of Yosemite pretty soon.
Hopefully, both my Mac Pro’s 2008 A and B will last me a bit more and I can get to squeeze a few more seasons from them. They are awesome machines!
As you can tell, in theory I might have a little bit of a clue, but all is in the details. If you don’t mind, please shed some light on this process I am about to begin…thanks a bunch!

    Thank you!

Re: Mac Pro's (early 2008) Back up plan towards a possible OS upgrade to Yosemite  in response to Juan Huerta
All new drives need to be partitioned GUID and formatted Mac OS Extended, Journaled before they can be used.
OK, is that an option I'll be prompted to by the OS or do I have to "tell" that to...Disk Utilities (?)
If cloning is your purpose then use Disk Utility's Restore option. It will clone the drives and their Recovery HD partitions automatically.
I didn't know that Disk Utility had an option for cloning a bootable drive...is it better than CCC? (I have used neither one) I really would like to save $40 and avoid downloading additional software/applications...please if you don't mind...what option would that be once I click on "Disk Utility"? If you know of a good link or reliable article on the topic that will work for me too.
Test a clone be trying to boot the computer from it.
Any bootable drive in any bay can be used to boot the computer. Use Startup Drive preferences to set the desired boot volume.
Erase the target and try again.
But if the computer fails to start because I didn't create a good copy, how do I go back? Keyboard shortcuts? I keep reading that a wired keyboard must be used...and that's scary. If that's true, could I hook up any of my Windows based keyboards via USB?
Erase the drive and install OS X. You cannot use any software installed by the prior owner that was purchased via the App Store including OS X. You must start from scratch. (this actually is 5B rather than item 6.)
Well, he created an Admin account for me and I have been handling updates and everything with the new password he created for me. I wonder if I could access the Apple Store with my ID though...it's all under my name in that computer though, so I figure that at the Apple Store I'd just enter my ID...I guess, I have not tried that yet
    Yes.

  • I got a mid 2011 macbook air 13 with 128gb ssd is it possible to upgrade my storage?

i got a mid 2011 macbook air 13 with 128gb ssd is it possible to upgrade my storage?

It is entirely possible, as many have known from day one (as ifixit's first teardown revealed). Unlike the unupgradeable memory, the SSD is a discrete expansion card that is removeable with just one screw, after removing the case cover. It is however debateable as to whether such an expansion is worth the possible risk of making demonstrable changes to the MBA whilst still under warranty. So you may want to stave off consideration for a while.
I made the upgrade recently on my older 2010 MBA, and it was easier than upgrading the HDD on my old MacBook Pro.

Is it possible to upgrade the 10.5.8 OS on  a MacBook Pro with a 2.4 GHz/Intel Core 2 Duo with 2 GB of RAm to the latest OS?

The first step in Upgrading... is to Snow Leopard = OS X 10.6.x
It is Not available as a download... It is a Paid Upgrade.
    Do this first...
Check that your Mac meets the System Requirements for Snow Leopard...
    Snow Leopard Tech Specs
    http://support.apple.com/kb/SP575
If so... Purchase a Snow Leopard Install Disc...
    http://store.apple.com/us/product/MC573Z/A/mac-os-x-106-snow-leopard
    Other countries...
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HE57
After the Successful Install, run Software Update to get the latest updates for Snow Leopard.
Be sure to make a Backup of your Current System Before Upgrading...
Next... Check that your Mac meets the Requirements for Mountain Lion.
    Upgrade to Mountain Lion
With Regard to ML...  Check here for compatibility of 3rd party Software you may be using... Also note that Rosetta is no longer supported in Lion and Mountain Lion...

You should also consider more RAM... Get the Maximum you can for your Mac...
It is important to get the Correct and Matching RAM

  • Qosmio E10: Is it possible to upgrade the graphic adapter?

    Hello there,
I have a question regarding a Qosimio E10. Is it possible to upgrade the graphics Adapter to a more recent one. (Now : Geforce FX 5200 Go 64 Mb) Because the one i use now is ot of date and I dont want to buy a new notebook just because of a Graphics Card !
    Thanks for your help
    Marco

    Hi
No, its not possible because the graphic card is a little small chip which was fixed on the mainboard. The graphic card design is not the same like on the PC desktop.

  • Satellite A100-207: Is it possible to upgrade graphic card for gaming

    Hi
I am looking to buy the Toshiba A100-207 laptop and it comes with 128MB of shared graphics.
I would like to play games and I was wondering if I could upgrade the graphics (such as a nvidia card that I could buy and put in) or are the graphics fixed?
I would just like to know if I am able to upgrade?
    Thankyou

    Hi
In my opinion the graphic card and/or the CPU is not soldered on the new notebook generation. The parts should be simply plugged on the board.
But this does not change the upgrade situation.
Possibly you will be able to remove the graphic card but Im sure you will get compatibility problems with other hardware.
The stronger graphic card produces more warmness and the temperature would increases automatically to a higher level. This would lead to the overheating issue and the notebook would either shut down or not starts.
The desktop PC technology is simply different as on the notebooks. You can also not compare the different graphic cards. Notebook manufactures uses only the graphic card chips which dont supports an own cooling module.
Simply said its not possible to upgrade the graphic card.

  • How far is it possible to upgrade a Mac Pro mid-2010 to the maximum extract.

    Hello
How far is it possible to upgrade a Mac Pro mid-2010 to the maximum performance. I would be interested how far one could come close to the performance of the new Mac Pro 2013, or is it hopeless.
    My computer
    Mac Pro
    mid-2010
    Processor 2 x 2.4 GHz Quad-Core Intel Xeon
    Memory 14 GB 1066 MHz DDR3 ECC
Graphics Card ATI Radeon HD 5770 1024 MB
    Software OS X 10.9.1 (13B42)
Please excuse my english is not the best because.

    For what apps?
Okay, you have the slower 2.4GHz processors, most have found that MHz still rule and matter, meaning a 6-core 3.4GHz for some applications (most) was the best and the sweet spot.
So you could upgrade to a pair of 3.2GHz 4-core (cheapest) rather than splurge on two 6-core 3.34GHz (more expensive and more cores).
First thing to do, put the system on a 256GB Samsung 840 SSD.
For photoshop and graphics, invest in some more SSD ($US300 for 500GB) and put those on a PCIe SSD controller ($300 Sonnet Tempo Pro) and put Aperture/Lightroom on one, and use the 2nd SSD for scratch.
RAM: 24-32GB would probably help all but the more casusalist of user.
    Tips and articles:
http://www.macperformanceguide.com head to the TOPICS main page and there are dozens of sections each a different area of upgrade and optimization for applications. Storage, memory, how to, use arrays, backup strategy.

  • Is it possible to upgrade ATI radeon HD 2400 XT from 128MB to 512MB?

Hi, I just bought "Tom Clancy's Splinter cell: Conviction" and it doesn't work on my iMac.
Of course I should have checked in depth the details of the requierments because now it appears that my graphic card doesn't support the game.
(I didn't think it would be a problem since I play "COD Warfare" with no lagging or any bug at all)
    I have an iMac 20" - Mid 2007.
Hence my question stated in the title "Is it possible to upgrade ATI radeon HD 2400 XT from 128MB to 512MB?"...
I should add in case of a positive answer: "and how?..."
    Thanks in advance!

    Thank you both!
I guess that is pretty much answering my question!...
Next time I buy a game I'll make sure I read THOUROUGHLY the requierments...
    So I don't waste $25.99 for nothing!...
When is someone going to come with an app that tells you right away if you computer support it or not???

  • Is it possible to upgrade the motherboard/graphics in my dv7-4177nr?

When I first bought this laptop it had decent, not great, performance in regards to video game graphics capabilities.  Requirements for video games are constantly evolving and my graphics card is no longer sufficient for new games.  I was wondering if it is at all possible to upgrade the integrated graphics (ATI Radeon HD 5470, I believe) of my dv7-4177nr by purchasing a new motherboard.  If so, what are some model numbers of compatible motherboards?  I would really like to avoid the purchase of a new PC/laptop as this one is only about 1.5 years old I think.
    Thanks!

Yes it is.... I own a dv7-4177nr myself and talked at length with HP... if you can find the right motherboard (oem) and don't mind doing the work yourself it is doable. Keep in mind you have to swap out the motherboard (mobo) with another because the gpu and sundry is built into the mobo and not detachable like a desktop setup. Also if all you want is a gpu upgrade and are lucky enough to have a PCI card slot there are several options that you can upgrade your gpu to a desktop gpu which eliminates the need to swap motherboards and just run a graphics card (gpu) for gaming or streaming purposes...

  • Is it possible to upgrade graphics card in my S410?

I've bought a IdeaPad S410, equipeed with i5-4210U 1.70 GHz , Intel HD Graphics (Intergrated) and Radeon R5 M230. I would like to know if it's possible to upgrade my R5 M230 to a better Graphics card, perhaps R7 M260?
Any reply is greatly appreciated, Thanks in advance..

    hi MizARe3,
Looking at the S410 hardware layout (page 59-60 of the hardware maintenance manual), the CPU and the discrete Radeon R5 M230 are both integrated to the motherboard, thus, you can't separately upgrade the discrete GPU.

  • Is it possible to upgrade the graphics card on a mid 2012 MacBook Pro? And is it possible to upgrade the RAM without voiding the warranty?

Hi I was wondering if it is possible to upgrade the graphics card on a MacBook Pro and the RAM without voiding the warranty? I have a gt 650m in my MacBook Pro, non retina, and to me, its not enough power for me, so i was looking around, and I found a retailer that would give me a nvidia gtx 660m for a decent price. Also, the ram needs to be at least 12gbs, to ensure that my computer would run fast.
If you can help, please tell me,
    Thankyou.

No, the video card cannot be exchanged - you have a pretty decent GPU there; not sure why you'd want to switch it out. You can upgrade the RAM to a maximum of 16GBs. Apple recommends upgrading in matching pairs, so I don't really think I'd try 4GB and 8GB stick.
Both Crucial and OWC have memory available for the new Macs. Both are reputable dealers and know Macs well and I would only buy from these sources (and I would buy Crucial, were it me).
Although your Mac didn't come with a users manual outlining the installation of the additional RAM, you can download the late 2011 model users guide as the models themselves are almost identical.
Good luck - write back with any questions.
