Is it possible to upgrade the GPU in the computer?

I have recently upgraded my OS X 10.4.11 Mac to 10.6.7, and am looking to play games on it. When I do however, it seems that the GPU (Intel GMA 950) cannot handle it. The game gives GPUs that would work for it, such as ATI Radeon 2400, NVIDIA 8600M, Intel HD Graphics 3000. Is it at all possible to install these GPUs on my computer?

Sorry, No. The GPU is an integral part of the MotherBoard.

Does anyone know if the GPU on the Surface 3 is supported in the new Lightroom CC?

I believe it's the same as most GPS devices. It's accurate within 50 feet.

  • When support After Effects Ray-traced 3D the GPU of the new iMac with retina display (GPU: AMD Radeon R9 M295X 4GB)?

I would like to know whether After Effects CC Ray-traced 3D support the GPU of the new iMac with retina display.

It never will. This is nVidia-exclusive technology and the whole things is deprecated, anyway. You better learn to use Cineware, buy a 3D program like Pro Animator or Element 3D or learn a proper 3D program.

  • Problems between the GPU and the fans

    Hello !
I've got an iMac 21,5" with 3,2 GHz Intel Core i3. My GPU is an ATI Radeon HD 5670 with 512 MB of VRAM.
I recently noticed that when i'm running a game and when at the same moment the fans are used around 2000rpm the performances of the GPU are strongly reduced. I ran Cinebench 11.5 so as to know a little more about that and there are the results :
    - With the fans : 8 fps
    - Without the fans : 30 fps.
    Is it normal ?
    Thanks for help

  • Hardware acceleration in Firefox 4 fluctuates my gpu clock speed and for some period of browsing will hang the gpu at the highest clock speed available even after closing Firefox 4.

After browsing heavily in Firefox 4 for some time, my gpu (ATI 5870 with the latest drivers) will stay clocked at the highest clock speed of 850Mhz and memory clock speed of 1200Mhz. Even after closing Firefox 4, the gpu will not down-clock and stay at those highest speed. I've tested the same browsing pattern on IE9 and in which this problem didn't exist so I don't think it's a driver issue. I now have to browse with hardware acceleration turned off to ensure I don't get this problem.

Ive downgraded from FF4 to 3.6 at this point. The CPU usage is out of control on OS X.

  • Is it possible to upgrade AND switch at the same time?

My wife and I share a phone/data plan that includes my Samsung Stratosphere, her iPhone4, and we both have iPads (2 and Mini).
My wife's iPhone is eligible for discounted upgrade right now, and she likes the iPhone 4S or iPhone 5.
My Stratosphere is eligible for discounted upgrade in February 2014.
Problem is, I'm sick and tired of my Samsung and it's terrible battery life and OS slowness, and I can't/don't want to wait until Feb 2014.
I know I could troubleshoot, take it to the VZW store for replacement or fix, etc. etc. but I just don't have time or energy for that.
    So...
Can I upgrade my wife to an iPhone 4S or 5 on her line...
Then take her current iPhone 4 and activate it on my line?
And take the Stratosphere out of commission?
I know how to activate a new device, and how to switch devices that are on the same plan, just wondering if you can do both at the same time, and how you would do something like that.

Ann154, that's right! You can move the deactivated device to another line. For your convenience, equipment changes can be made online at My Verizon: http://vz.to/12m2lHL

  • Premiere Pro CC only using 30% CPU and none of the GPU

    Hi,
I’m very new to video editing (actually I have no Idea what H264, or avi or mp4 or mov is, I just need the video to work) and I have never used Premiere Pro before. Now I'm trying the CC 7.0 trial.
My goal is to achieve the fastest rendering times possible.
Today I have upgraded my PC for maximal performance in video editing:
    Intel i7 4930K (12threads)
    Radeon 6950 (2GB)
    16GB RAM
    SSD
I have a recorded video of me playing a PC game in .avi 2552*1348 resolution (2560*1440 monitor without some borders).
I have set export to H.264 and settings to match source (resolution 2552*1348, 30 FPS, Progressive, Square pixels, NTSC, main, 5.0).
But when rendering (no effects, just cutting) the program only uses 22-45% of the entire CPU and none of the GPU.
The best result with this stress was cca 1:1 rendering:movie length. I'm using 16GB RAM, I tried 32GB and 64GB and the stress on CPU and GPU was the same and the rendering times changed only slightly.
I have an SSD and the read write speeds during rendering are 1-9 MB/s so there is plenty of performance left.
Frankly, this 1:1 performance offers Power Director 11 which I have been using so far. (When editing 1080p the ratio in PP is cca 1:2,5, the same as in Power Director.)
So when the disks are idle, the GPU is idle, more RAM changes nothing and the CPU only works on 1/3 its capacity, what is the bottleneck?
I want to use 100% of the CPU and 100% of the GPU and have the rendering:movie say 0,3:1 or so.
What can I change to fully use the processing power of my computer?
    Thanks

  • How to use the GPU for calculations?

    Hello everybody,
I am working on a project at the Ruhr-University, where i have to determine the calculation speed of ActionScript, e.g. in calculating MD5 Hash values.
Is it possible to use the GPU for the calculation? It would be the best, when i can use the GPU and the CPU for the calculations.
I already know that ActionScript is running on the CPU und the GPU is used for video rendering.
Is there a chance to use specifically the GPU for the calculation?

  • Possible to Upgrade to 16gb?

This is my first time posting on these forums so if this is in the wrong section or if it has previously been answered... sorry. My question is- Is it possible to upgrade your memory to the new 16gb card while keeping the same phone? I have the 8gb model and would like to have the 16gb card without having to buy a new phone. Is there anyway you can send it in and have them swap? If so how much? If not what are my options? Thanks in advance.

Unfortunately, no, there is not a way to do that at this time. Your options are dependent on when you bought your iPhone.
If you purchased in the last 14 days, you can return it, pay a 10% restocking fee and then purchase the new one.
If you purchased more than 14 days ago, your best option is to sell the 8gb and purchase the new one. There are no upgrade options to discount the new purchase.
But keep in mind, the 8gb phone you have now is the same phone you loved two days ago, and it still does exactly what it did two days ago. So, consider if the extra capacity makes it worth it for you and then choose from there.
    Hope this help!

  • FAQ: What features use the GPU and how do I troubleshoot GPU issues?

    Photoshop CS6 GPU FAQ
    Introduction
This document provides a quick reference guide to video card usage in Photoshop.  Some features require a compatible video card to work; if the video card or its driver is defective or unsupported, those features will not work at all.  Other features use the video card for acceleration and if the card or driver is defective those features will run more slowly.
    Mercury Graphics Engine
The Mercury Graphics Engine (MGE) represents features that use video card, or GPU, acceleration. In Photoshop CS6, this new engine delivers near-instant results when editing with key tools such as Liquify, Warp, Lighting Effects and the Oil Paint filter. The new MGE delivers unprecedented responsiveness for a fluid feel as you work.
MGE is new to Photoshop CS6, and uses both the OpenGL and OpenCL frameworks. It does not use the proprietary CUDA framework from nVidia.
In order to use MGE, you must have a supported video card and updated driver. If you do not have a supported card, performance will be degraded. In most cases the acceleration is lost and the feature runs in the normal CPU mode. However, there are some features that will not work without a supported video card.
GPU features added in Photoshop CS6
Adaptive Wide Angle Filter (compatible video card required)
Liquify (accelerated by compatible video card with 512MB VRAM, GPU mode unavailable on Windows XP)
Oil Paint (compatible video card required)
Warp and Puppet Warp (accelerated by compatible video card, GPU mode unavailable on Windows XP)
Field Blur, Iris Blur, and Tilt/Shift (accelerated by compatible video
card supporting OpenCL, GPU mode unavailable on Windows XP)
Lighting Effects Gallery (compatible video card required with 512MB

    GPU/OpenGL preferences in Photoshop CS6
The advantages of using a compatible video card (GPU) with Photoshop are that you can experience better performance and more features.   Problems can occur if you have an older video card with limited VRAM or if you use other programs at the same time as Photoshop that use the GPU.
Choose Edit > Preferences (Windows) or Photoshop > Preferences (Mac OS).
In the Performance panel, make sure Use Graphics Processor is selected in GPU Settings.
Click Advanced Settings and specify the following options:
    Mode > Basic
    Mode > Normal
Mode > Advanced Provides the benefits of Normal mode as well as newer OpenGL advances that can result in improved performance.
Use Graphics Processor to Accelerate Computation
Use OpenCL Uses the GPU to accelerate the new blur filters (Field Blur, Iris Blur, and Tilt-Shift) – OpenCL will only be available on newer GPUs that support OpenCL v1.1 or higher
Anti-Alias Guides And Paths Allows the GPU hardware to smooth the edges of drawn guides and paths.
30 Bit Display (Windows only) Allows Photoshop to display 30 bit data directly to screen on video cards that support it
    Quick GPU Troubleshooting Steps
You can experience problems such as artifacts, errors, and crashes if there are incompatibilities between Photoshop and the display components that access the GPU.
If you experience crashes, incorrectly rendered windows or objects, redraw issues, or performance issues while running Photoshop, first determine whether OpenGL is causing the problem.
    Turn off OpenGL.
Choose Edit > Preferences (Windows) or Photoshop > Preferences (Mac OS).
In the Performance panel, uncheck Use Graphics Processor. Click OK.
Restart Photoshop, and perform the same function.
If the problem recurs while OpenGL Drawing is disabled, OpenGL is not the cause. For additional troubleshooting, see Troubleshoot system errors and freezes | Adobe software on Windows (cpsid_82252) or Troubleshoot system errors and freezes | Adobe software on Mac OS 10.x (cpsid_82414).
If the problem resolves, proceed with the rest of the troubleshooting steps to fix OpenGL.
Make sure that you're using the latest update of Photoshop.Updates fix bugs and issues.
Update the display driver.Updated display drivers can fix many issues, such as crashing, incorrectly rendered objects, and performance problems. Determine what video card you have and go directly to the manufacturer's website (nVidia or ATI/AMD) and download the latest driver. (Note: Simply doing a Windows Update is does not guarantee you are using the latest driver. You must go directly to the nVideo or ATI/AMD websites to get the absolute latest driver.) After you update your driver, turn on Use Graphics Processor in Photoshop preferences.
    Reset preferences.
Resetting preferences returns OpenGL settings to their default status. Reset Photoshop preferences by pressing and holding Shift+Ctrl+Alt (Windows) or Shift+Option+Command (Mac OS) immediately after you start Photoshop.
Click Yes when asked if you want to delete the Adobe Photoshop Settings File.
Retry the function that caused the problem.
Change the OpenGL mode to Basic.
Setting the OpenGL mode to Basic uses the least amount of GPU memory and the most basic GPU feature set.
    Close all documents.
Choose Edit > Preferences (Windows) or Photoshop > Preferences (Mac OS)
In the Performance panel, click the GPU Settings Advanced Settings button.
    Choose Mode > Basic
    Restart Photoshop.
If this solution resolves the problem, switch to Normal mode. See if the issue recurs. If the issue recurs, return to Basic mode.
Note:  If you’re changing GPU preferences to troubleshoot a problem, re-launch Photoshop after each change.
If you are using more than one video adapter, remove the additional cards.
Multiple video adapters can cause problems with GPU accelerated or enabled features in Photoshop. It's best to connect two (or more) monitors into one video adapter. If you have to use more than one video adapter, make sure that they are the same make and model. Otherwise, crashes and other problems can occur in Photoshop.
Note: Using two video adapters does not enhance Photoshop's performance.
    Check your Cache Levels setting.
If you've set your Cache Levels to 1 in Photoshop preferences, you can experience performance issues with GPU features. Reset Cache Levels to the default setting, which is 4.
Choose Edit > Preferences > Performance (Windows) or Photoshop > Preferences (Mac OS)
In the Performance panel, choose Cache Levels > 4.
    The GPU Sniffer
To help guard against Photoshop crashes related to bad GPU hardware or drivers, Photoshop employs a small program called the GPU Sniffer. Every time Photoshop is launched, Photoshop launches the sniffer. The sniffer runs rudimentary tests of the GPU and reports the results to Photoshop. If the sniffer crashes or reports a failure status to Photoshop, Photoshop will not use the GPU. The Use Graphics Hardware checkbox in the Performance panel of the Preferences will be unchecked and disabled.
The first time the sniffer fails, Photoshop will display a dialog indicating that it has detected a problem with the GPU. On subsequent launches the dialog will not appear unless the Photoshop preferences are reset.
If the user corrects the problem, either by replacing the video card or by updating the driver, then the sniffer will pass on the next launch and the Use Graphics Hardware checkbox will be enabled and returned to its previous state (enabled or disabled).
Tested video cards for Photoshop CS6
Adobe tested the following video cards before the release of Photoshop CS6. This document lists the video card by series. While the minimum amount of VRAM supported on video cards for Photoshop CS6 is 256MB, some features require 512MB of VRAM to be enabled.
Note: Adobe tested laptop and desktop versions of the following cards. Be sure to download the latest driver for your specific model. (Laptop and desktop versions have slightly different names.)
    nVidia GeForce 8000, 9000, 100, 200, 300, 400, 500 series
    nVidia Quadro 400, 600, 2000, 4000 (Mac & Win), CX, 5000, 6000
    AMD/ATI Radeon 2000, 3000, 4000, 5000, 6000, 7000 series
    AMD/ATI FirePro 3800, 4800, 5800, 7800, 8800, 9800, 3900, 4900, 5900, 7900

  • How do I load an .atf file into a ByteArray for upload to the GPU?

I'm trying to optimise the amount of GPU memory my textures use for a Stage3D project so I thought I'd finally switch to ATF textures. I've converted them from png to atf using the png2atf tool and I'm loading them with a URLLoader but I'm having trouble passing the textures into ByteArrays. I've tried various things and I'm running out of ideas; Does anyone know the AS to pass a loaded atf into a ByteArray? I need it to be a ByteArray for upload to the GPU with the
uploadCompressedTextureFromByteArray method on the Texture class - unless someone knows better...

Hello there. Thanks for the reply, but I had already seen that page (I've been searching online a lot for a solution to this). That page only details using the Embed tag to add the .atfs. I want to load them in at run time with a URLLoader. THAT's working fine; It's then passing the loaded object into a ByteArray that I'd like help with. Cheers.

  • No OpenCL Device for the GPU on XServe (Early 2009)

    Hi,
we want to utilize OpenCL on our Server. The GPU (NVidia GT 120) should be supported according to all specs I can find and one can google for benchmark results for Mac Pro's also equipped with the GT 120.
The software, OpenCL Framework, CUDA drivers, and our test programm also seem to work fine and have properly installed themselve on the server as well as on our MacBook Pro (for testing).
To be a little more exact, the NVidia CUDA drivers and NVidia CUDA Toolkit have been installed from here:
    http://developer.nvidia.com/object/cuda3_1downloads.html#MacOS
On the MacBook Pro (NVidia 9400M), the OpenCL programm successfully finds both OpenCL devices:
    Device #0 name = GeForce 9400M
    Device #1 name = Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Duo CPU P8700 @ 2.53GHz
On the XServe, the GPU is not listed in the queried device list:
    Device #0 name = Intel(R) Xeon(R) CPU X5550 @ 2.67GHz
Our algorithm test runs well utilizing the CPU device on the XServe, thus we suspect the framework to be properly installed.
Also, we can use GPU accellerated OpenGL on the XServe very well.
Have we made something wrong, have we missed any software?
Is this a known/wanted limitation of the XServe?
Is anyone out there using OpenCL on the GPU of the XServe?
    Thanks in advance,
    TB

    MrHoffman wrote:
I did go look at the NVIDA web page, and don't see something in particular to download to run some tests or to have a look at the code. (There were a pile of links over there, but nothing obvious to test to get to the error.
To run a test with the OpenCL Framework and verify that it is not just our XServe not listing a GPU device for OpenCL you could use this simple tutorial app which works out of the box and is compiled with a single click:
    site: http://www.macresearch.org/opencl_episode3/
    app: http://www.macresearch.org/files/opencl/Episode3source.zip
This should run with the original distribution. NVidia offers CUDA drivers, OpenCL works on CUDA capable devices only.
Theoretically they should not be needed because 10.6.6 already supports OpenCL but I suspected this to cause the missing device and installed them, but without the intended result:
    http://developer.download.nvidia.com/compute/cuda/31/drivers/cudadriver_3.1.17macos.dmg
Some other things might be included in the CUDA toolbox from NVidia.
I don't know why this doesn't work. Have you checked with NVIDIA directly to see if they have tested with this controller? It looks like it's listed as supported ([here|http://developer.download.nvidia.com/compute/cuda/32_prod/docs/Getting_StartedMac.pdf] and particularly [here|http://www.nvidia.com/object/cuda_gpus.html]), but there are clearly issues with the device.
There's a [long thread|http://forums.nvidia.com/index.php?showtopic=91033] on GT 120 series support, and there's very little (nothing) over there that lists Xserve support. So I state this again (and without intending any sarcasm), please consider directly asking NVIDIA for information on their package.
I know that thread. And there are more resources on the web about OpenCL running on GT 120 cards of the Mac Pro.
I will of course ask NVidia about it, too.

  • Satellite C650-1CP - Is it possible to upgrade the GPU?

    Hi
I just wanted to ask a question about my graphics card in regards to gaming.
I just recently found out that integrated graphics chips arent that good for gaming so i done a little reading into the subject and found something saying that there is a possibility that you can send the laptop to the manufacturer and purchase a chip upgrade or pay to get a better one installed.
Is this possible? and if it is, what sort of price would you be looking at. My laptop is a C650-1CP as i said in the title.
    Thanks
    kjlwhitehead

    Hi
No, this is definitely not possible.
There are plenty of threads about this theme and GPU (graphic card) upgrade is definitely NOT possible.
    Please check this Toshiba doc:
+Can I upgrade the CPU, graphic card or mainboard in my Toshiba notebook?+

  • Is it possible to upgrade the CPU or GPU of a Toshiba Notebook?

Many customers would like to upgrade/replace the CPU (Central Processing Unit) and/or GPU (Graphics Processing Unit) in their mobile systems to gain performance.
Toshiba does not support or recommend performing modifications on their mobile systems since the core components in these mobile systems are not upgradeable like in a desktop system.
    More Info: http://aps2.toshiba-tro.de/kb0/TSB9401AX0001R01.htm

    Hi there,
I think what John meant to say is: it is not possible because it´s too expensive and you won´t gain some really big speed. I don´t know where you read something, but I think if you were a toshiba technician and would be familiar with electronics and the machines or especially with your machine than you won´t have a problem to exchange it.
I already tried to perform such exchange on my Satellite P20 some months ago. I can truly tell you: it didn´t bring me really some speed or performance. You will gain more performance by upgrading your RAM or your harddisk, but not with exchanging your CPU.
And it doesn´t matter which machine do you have regardless if you own a Satellite, Satellite Pro or a Tecra. The result is the same because the models have all the same componentes (but not similar hardware :) )
