Is it possible to use 2 firewire drives as TM backup with raid?

It seems that RAID is used for a lot of things, but I haven't been able to figure out if this is a proper use.
I have two hard drives. (1 TB/320 GB) I'd like to format the two drives into one using RAID in Disk Utility and use fore Time Machine backups. Is this possible or advisable? If this would work, is there a limit to the number of drives in a RAID setup?
Thanks.

It's certainly possible to use a proper RAID with Time Machine, but you don't have the drives to create a proper RAID. A proper RAID system should be built using identical drives - same capacity, same brand and ideally, even the same firmware.

  • How use Google Drive to do Backups with Time Machine?

Hi everyone! I work in a company that give us a huge amount of space in google drive, bigger than my hard drive! The other day someone tried to break in. Luckily nothing happened but the computer and external hard drive were here! Since then I've been wondering some way to do an automatic back up with time machine using google drive account. No matter how long is take but at least i will be an online back up. I couldn't find anything useful so if there is some that could give a hint or just for to know if this is doable. Any suggestion, thoughts or ideas?
    Cheers!

  • X4200 server, is it possible to use SATA drives instead of SAS drives

    Hello,
We are planning to purchase X4200 servers; According to documentation, they use SAS drive, which are quite expensive. So is it possible to use SATA drives? I read somewhere that their interface is similar and SATA can work with SAS.
    Thanks
    Steve

    Hello,
I don't see any SATA drives listed for the X4200.
    To quote rukbat:
"If there is any sort of warranty or service contract coverage on that box,
you will need to use Sun parts if you hope to maintain active coverage
for that warranty or contract. Parts from third-party sellers may invalidate
or suspend the coverage for as long as they are in the chassis."

  • The first time I connected my new My Passport portable hard drive to my Mac, the message asking if I want to use the drive to back up with Time Machine did not appear.  What is the next step?

The first time I connected my new My Passport portable hard drive to my MacBook Pro, the message asking if I want to use the drive to back up with Time Machine did not appear.  I would like to set it up to do this.  What would my next step be?

    Drive Partition and Format
    1. Open Disk Utility in your Utilities folder.
    2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
    3. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Apply button and wait until the process has completed.
    4. Select the volume you just created (this is the sub-entry under the drive entry) from the left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
    5. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Security button, check the button for Zero Data and click on OK to return to the Erase window.
    6. Click on the Erase button. The format process can take up to several hours depending upon the drive size.
Open Time Machine preferences to select this drive for use as the backup drive. Turn on Time Machine.

  • Trouble using firewire drives via thunderbolt adapter on bootcamped Mac Pro 2013 towers

Here at the university, we've just installed a new classroom of Mac Pro towers (late 2013).  We like to use Bootcamp in said classroom, and so I (painstakingly) installed Windows 8.1 on a test machine.  I've found that the brand new firewire-to-thunderbolt adapters we bought don't seem to work when booted into Windows.  I have few LaCie firewire drives I use to install software packages, and the occasional WD My Book, and our students are encourage to purchase G-Drives to back up their film projects.
I have a couple of LaCie drives that I've partitioned as part Mac OS Extended and part ExFat (or even MS-DOS just in case).   The Windows-friendly partitions don't mount or even get detected, so I think it's the adapter(s) not being recognized by Windoes, especially since the firewire to thunderbolt adapters work on the Mac side.
Could this be a driver problem like what's mentioned here?

Well, no one answered at all, but somehow the problem solved itself.  I'm not sure if one of the automatic Windows updates cleared things up or what, but now I can connect Firewire drives with no problems.  Also, as some kind of bonus, Windows 8 is able to read Mac partitioned firewire drives, which I don't think was possible in Windows 7.
The problem may also have been that I hadn't entered the Windows activation key in yet? I'm not sure that makes sense in terms of Thunderbolt adapters...
10+ years ago, I read a Microsoft tip of the day that said "Problems that go away by themselves can come back by themselves." It's haunted me ever since.

  • Apps not launching after using Firewire drive on a different ibook.

Hello. I purchased a used ibook running system 9.2 and used my firewire drive from my original ibook ( OS 10.3.9) as a startup disk. It mounted the drive and operated but Safari and Mail were un able to make an internet connection. Mail needed a Force Quit to be able to Shutdown. The firewire drive is the only drive used with the original ibook and contains the OS and applications. Since then several but not all applications will not launch on my original ibook. Safari crashes then launches. Mail launches but will not work. Incidentally, I do not have any s OS 9 files on my original ibook. I have repaired permissions. Hi John, welcome to Apple Discussions
One possible fix, clear your System and Kernel Caches on the firewire drive. You can do this using a Utility such as Onyx - Panther version. Restart.
If that doesn't help, since your problem is OS X related, the Mac OS X v10.3 & earlier forum would be a better place to post your problem.

  • Use Firewire Drive with both OSX and XP

    Hi,
I am in the process of migrating to a Mac from Windows XP. I have an external hard drive (WD MyBook Pro 250gb) which I have been using to backup data to from Windows. The device is currently formatted to 120gb using NTFS so that Windows can backup to it. The remaining space is currently unformatted.
I need to keep my Windows data for a period while I become comfortable using the Mac before decomissioning the PC. I had assumed that I could maintain the XP NTFS partition, and simply partition the remaining space as an HFS/HFS+ partition using the Disk Tool in the Utilities folder. However, when I attempt this, I don't get any option to format the remaining space - not even as FAT.
Previous experience with Linux led me to believe that this would be easy to accomplish on Mac OSX, but it appears not to be the case.
I have searched Google and other Apple Support forums. At this point I am unsure if it simply a lack of knowledge on my part, or if this just flat out cannot be done with OSX.
Once I am happy that the migration is successful, then I will trash all partitions on the Firewire drive and simply have one HFS/HFS+ partition, but I'd like to have the extra comfort of keeping my data in the interim.
Many thanks for your effort on providing guidance.
    Mark

Why not format the remaining space in Windows as FAT32? That way both your XP and your Mac can read and write to the FAT32 space, XP can read and write the NTFS space, and the Mac can read and copy from the NTFS space. The reason I suggest doing the FAT32 format in Windows is because I have had number of cases where Windows (both XP and Vista) simply would not recognize a Mac formatted FAT32 partition, whereas the Mac has never had a problem recognizing and using Windows formatted FAT32 partitions/drives. Once you are quite done with the Windows XP machine and have transferred all the data off the drive, you can then select the whole drive and do a low level reformat. At that time you'll want to change it from the Master Boot Record partitioning scheme it undoubtedly currently has, to the GUID Partition Table that is preferred for Intel machines and Leopard.

  • Can no longer repair permissions using firewire drive

attempting to boot from a firewire drive with 10.6 to repair permissions of a different 10.6 drive no longer works.
even though there's an OS on the drive, when launching Disk Utility, the Repair Permissions button is completely greyed out unless you select the actual boot drive
looks like we might now ONLY be able to repair permissions using the 10.6 boot disc

  • Going Crazy! How to force startup using firewire drive on G3

Okay, I think I'm going crazy. I have searched last night and today for my answers and still no solution.
I have an old G3 I'm trying to install Tiger on. I don't have a dvd drive in the G3, so I installed onto a firewire drive from my G4. I booted from the firewire drive and manually copied all the file over to the internal drive on the G3. Some things wouldn't copy. Obviously, this is part of my problem. Unfortunately, I did not run the disk utility, etc before restarting after doing this. Now, I get a kernel panic on a grey screen with frozen beach ball cursor. When I reboot from my Techtool 4 pro disk, I can access the program, but it's all fuzzy grey on the screen. Plus that didn't work. I have tried to reboot from my older OS10.1 install disk. But I can't do anything with it, and it won't install over the newer "incomplete" system. If I restart pushing X or C or Option button, nothing happens. The G3 has two internal drives, each with a system on it. Neither will start up. The firewire drive is hooked up, and I can't reboot from that.
Can anyone tell me the shortcut to reboot from the external firewire drive? What do I push? Or is

  • External Firewire Drive Will Not Boot with 10.5.1

I have a Intel Mac Mini and I tried to install Leopard onto a external Firewire Drive. I have done this with 10.4.11 and all works well. The Mac Mini is running 10.5.1 on it's internal drive. I attached the Ext FW drive 320 GB and formatted it using 'Disk Utility' GUID format. I next installed 10.5.0 on the Ext FW Drive. I can shutdown and reboot with 10.5.0 using the firewire drive as the booting drive. I next installed the 10.5.1 update and when it completes it requests a restart, I restart it and it never boots back up just the Grey-Apple screen.
I have left it sit for a long time in this 'trying-to-boot' mode for a longtime because I know 10.5.1 may restart more than once on initial install. but nothing. I have also tried partitioning the drive into 3 40-80-180GB drives, but still the same behavior.
    Any suggestions?

Went through the motions on that. No positive results. I'm starting to suspect either the enclosure or one of the latest updates.
This what I have found to date.
The Enclosure " Vantec NexStar 3" extrenal USB 2.0 and Firewire. Model NST-360UF-BK
The Drive Seagate Barracuda 7200.10 320 GB IDE Drive
I tried 10.5.0 on an Intel Mac Mini. (GUID format) It boots ok. Install 10.5.1 manually downloaded or automatic it will install the update but will no reboot.
(this part I have to verify a second time) tried the same enclosure on a G4 . I attached the drive formatted it for a PowerPC install and boot. Installed 10.4.10 but not the latest security updates, JAVA, and QT. It will boot ok from the external FW drive. I next install the latest Updates via the update app in the Systems Preference window. After doing the updates for 10.4.10 it will not boot.
So I'm suspecting either the enclosure or the latest updates

  • Storing music on Firewire drive and sharing it with Win2000 laptop too

I just got a new 24"iMac and managed to transfer most of my music over from my g4 with a backup of my library. Now, I also have a 160gb Firewire drive that is empty and would like to make a second library of music of just all my cd's around 350 or so and be able to access this from my iMac and also share this music with a Panasonic Toughbook laptop running Windows 2000 with a 100gb hard drive. Anyone done similar / same thing ?? I looked at other posts for an hour or so and just got more confused LOL and was hoping for a direct answer.

as long as the music is on the external drive it does not matter what type of computer you use to access as long as each computer runs itunes. when activating itunes in either os hold down the alt/option button and it will give you the option to access a different library. the complete directions are in itunes help on your computer.
