Is it possible to use a 30" Apple display with a Windows PC laptop?

First let me say that I can't switch to a Mac, since this is what they gave me at work.
OK, that being said, I have an IBM ThinkPad T43 (not a bad computer by the way, it's reliable). I have this hooked into a docking station and it is currently powering an Apple 23" Cinema Display at 1900x1200. This works perfectly. There is a DVI port on the back of the docking station.
I would like to upgrade to the 30", but I can't seem to find any PCMCIA graphic cards that would support the 30" native resolution. I am not sure if the T43 would support it or not. I have a Villagetronic VTbook (http://www.villagetronic.com/eprvtbook.html) which I do not need to use with the T43, but I did need with the T40 that I used to have. I am also unsure if this card would power the 30". I'm surprised there are no solutions, since I have to believe that the Dell 30" has been hooked to a laptop in a docking station.
The T43 display control panel seems to indicate that it can output a maximum reslution of 2048x1536, which is greater than my 23" can support (it works, but I have to scroll around to see the edges).
By the way, EVERYONE I called when I first bought the 23" said it could not be done, including Apple, IBM, and the video card makers. So I would like to prove them wrong again by hooking up the 30".

I am running an ATI Radeon Mobility X300. I am currently running a 23" Apple Cinema Display at 1600x200, so I know it can handle a higher resolution than you stated. I have called many people about this (even Dell, to get their take on how to run their 30"), and basically, unless someone comes out with a PCMCIA card that is dual link DVI, you can't run it. I expect that villagetronic will come out with one eventually.

  • Using a non Apple Display with the Mini

I am considering purchasing a Mac Mini.
It will be installed in my living room and connected to my stereo to play music from iTunes.
In this area I only have about 19 inches of width. So I'm looking at purchasing a non Apple display that will fit in this width.
What requirements should I look for in a display (hopefully to avoid adapters)?

Recommend you buy from someplace that has a good exchange/return policy.
Thanks, I always do, especially with a display.
Some places have a policy that requires a certain number of dead pixels before they will accept a return.
I ALWAYS test a display with 'Pixel Tester' immediately. If I find ANY defective pixels I return the display, and I never say the word "pixel" to them.
having one dead pixel that is white, for example, while all others show color, can be annoying.
And hard to re-sell later. Look on ebay, you will find many ads for used computers and displays that say "No Dead Pixels".

Can I use a non Apple display with a new MacBook Pro?
    Special connections?

Only thing you need is a minidisplayport-to-? adapter ... plugs into Thunderbolt port.  ? is replaced by VGA or HDMI or DVI.
I have used high-quality brand names (LG, Samsung) that were picked because I liked the display and have had no issues.
I will add that some threads speak of issues with some Dell monitors that work spottily if at all.  But only from reading other threads.

  • Im completely new to Mac. Im swapping my windows laptop for macbook pro and looking for network storage solution which the Time Capsule seems to do. Is it possible to use this as NAS for my desktop Windows PC - windows 7

Im completely new to Mac. Im swapping my windows laptop for macbook pro and looking for network storage solution which the Time Capsule seems to do. Is it possible to use this as NAS for my desktop Windows PC - windows 7

Broadly speaking I want some sort of network storage( wireless or through my existing wifi router) that I can access files for both my windows PC and Macbook and also to access files to my iPad/ iPhone. Some sort of backup and sychronisation so that I can access certain files remotely.
Buy a real NAS.. synology or QNAP are the standard... although companies like Netgear and Western Digital and Seagate make them as well.
There is no problem sharing between Mac and PC now.. you do not even need a NAS to do that.. you simply share the hard disk directly. Mac talk SMB.. everything talks SMB nowadays.. so it is easy.
ipad and iphone are not designed to use NAS.. they are designed to backup only to the cloud or itunes.. but you can load an app like file browser if you want.

Remote access to the Apple TC is somewhere between difficult, to impossible from a PC.. Apple use BTMM and iCloud but the service is not offered to PC.
A real NAS will offer HTTPS or SFTP or several other methods.. that both Mac and PC can use.
You simply plug it into the current wireless router.. it is a network device and assessable over the network. It is not necessary to buy another router.. in fact that is a waste.

  • Can't use my apple displays with Mac mini

    Hey everyone,
I've got a pretty strange problem, and I'm hoping you guys know of a solution to this.
Thing is, I can't use any apple displays with my Mac mini box. Whenever I try to do so I can see that the monitors are turned on, but the screen is completely black (doesn't flicker or anything like that). I know for a fact that both of the apple monitors I tried work.
However, monitors from other manufacturers work just fine! This has got me baffled, what is it about apple monitors that's got my Mac so confused ?

It's possible the analog VGA is working on your mini whereas the DVI digital output is broken. They are two completely different interfaces that just happen to share a common connector on the mini.
Can you possibly get your hands on another, non-Apple monitor that has a DVI input? I would say if all three are not working (two Apple monitors and a third-party one), then definitely something is up with the mini's DVI output.

  • Can I use two  non-apple displays on my G5? Is there an adaptor for this?

I found a great deal on two non-Apple wide screen displays. I can hook up one to my G5 via the DVI port but can't use the second port--typically used by an Apple Display. Is there an adaptor that I can use so that I can use my second non-apple display?

can i use a non-apple keyboard with my imac?

Welcome to the Apple Support Communities
You can use the keyboard you want with your iMac. However, note that some keys, as the Command key, aren't present in non-Apple keyboards. For example, in a non-Apple keyboard, you have to press the Windows key because that's the replacement of the Command key of an Apple keyboard
