Is it possible to use a USB hub on a new MacBook Pro with Maverickss?

I have used a powered Q-Store USB2 hub on first my old trust MacBook with the 13 inch screen running System X.6.8 for years; then I switched it over to my new 13 In. MacBook Pro (non retina) with Mavericks X.9.2 and it still works great. It is powered and seems to run a full load including USB hard drives, camera when wanted, cooling pad with fan, printer/scanner/copier combo, charging a MP3 player or Galaxy S4, apple mouse and keyboard, all with no trouble and no drop outs. I let an old Firewire 400 or 800 hard disk stay with my old Macintosh for now as it mirrors it, but sometimes hook it up with no problem except it gets hot.
I have a new USB3  WD Passport 3 hard drive and a 32 gb USB 3 memory stick. I wanted to put these on a USB3 hub and use one of the ports for the faster items. I can run either my WD My Passport 3 Gb drive that I use to mirror my internal drive as long as it is alone. I can also plug a 32 gb A Data memory stick in fine alone except things get a bit snug, and there's no more room on the USB 2 hub for the memory stick. If I do not use a hub for the one port I have to either use the Hard Drive or the memory stick, not both. I was using the memory stick to port files back and forth between my old and new computers at least for a while. The USB 3 peripherals work reliably when plugged in alone, but the moment a hub gets in the picture even if only one item is plugged into it, things drop in and out. It does not matter if it is the powered USB 3 hub or the non-powered Anker USB 3 4 port hub. The USB 2 items simply work but the USB 3 ones only work alone. I have looked at the power specifications. It seems like one hard drive uses all of the power the hub can put out.
It looks like the USB 3 is rather limited on Macintosh computers is all I can conclude. There may be extra speed, but what good is it if you can only run one peripheral at a time? It seems like even a hub stresses it unless it is a hub and a memory stick or two. I even changed to system settings to keep my hard drives from going to sleep, but still it drops out randomly if hooked to a hub and runs perfectly when plugged in directly. I had hoped to use it for an emergency start up disk if needed, though I must say the rather incredible StoreEdge Micro SDX card works great for that purpose and seems to belong.
That old USB 2 hub, even with a smaller one plugged in with 2 portable hard drives still works flawlessly on the other port and never drops out.
I have not tested the Firewire 800 port long enough to decide, except it gets hot if it reads very long.. The old Firewire 800 / USB 2 hard disk has more than one port on it unlike so many today. I had to use a Firewire 800 to 400 cable for my old computer. Anyway it works in either computer and stays mounted even when asleep.
Is it possible to use a USB 3 hub with more than one peripheral on a 2012-2013 13 inch MacBook Pro computer with Mavericks? If so which one works? It cannot be good for hard disks to randomly disconnect and reconnect without being dragged to the trash.

no you can't - you have to upgrade it to 16GB yourself.
you can get your RAM from newegg.com, macsales.com.
the RAM you need is 16GB (8GBX2) DDR3 1600MHz DDR3.
upgrading the RAM yourself will not void your warranty.
you need a #00 Phillips Screwdriver - 10 screws at the bottom - 7 long ones and 3 short ones - just remember where they go when you put the screws back in.
a simple 10 minute job.

No, the superdrive works only with Mac that don't have an optical superdrive built in in the first place.
However, if you have a newer Mac that could support the SuperDrive or another computer (Mac or PC) which has an optical drive, you could use this: DVD or CD sharing: Using Remote Disc - Apple Support

  • Hi guys, I recently got a new MacBook Pro with a USB Superdrive. A disc won't eject, does anyone know of a way to eject it? I'm in Morocco for the next 10 days so going to an Apple store is not possible. Any help would be gratefully received, thanks

Five ways to eject a stuck CD or DVD from the optical drive
Ejecting the stuck disc can usually be done in one of the following ways:
      1. Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the
left mouse button until the disc ejects.
      2. Press the Eject button on your keyboard.
      3. Click on the Eject button in the menubar.
      4. Press COMMAND-E.
      5. If none of the above work try this: Open the Terminal application in
your Utilities folder. At the prompt enter or paste the following:
            /usr/bin/drutil eject
If this fails then try this:
Boot the computer into Single-user Mode. At the prompt enter the same command as used above. To restart the computer enter "reboot" at the prompt without quotes.

My eyes just glazed over...Please in the future break down each of your issues with paragraphs separated by two carriage returns. It would be much easier when trying to address your issues.
Go to Apple menu -> System Preferences -> Keyboard and Mouse -> Mouse
And edit your mouse settings to do what you want it to do.
Secondly, this is not the place to vent. If you have a complaint, there is:
    http://www.apple.com/feedback/
    or http://www.apple.com/contact/
We are just end users here helping other end users.
Third, from my understanding, it would appear you are concerned about the noise the hard drive makes when it falls asleep? Why not put your machine in screen saver mode instead? Apple menu -> System Preferences -> Energy Saver turn off all Energy Saver settings, or set them to run Never.
Fourth, if your machine was purchased just a few days ago, you may still be able to get an exchange from the store, quicker than you can get a repair done. You may want to look into that possibility.
Fifth, it does appear you found the Logic forum. I would persist in asking there how to solve your technical issue with Logic regarding the audio. It may be you don't have to do anything special to the hard drive. Remember audio can be transmitted by wire, avoiding ambient sounds.
    Good luck!

You should also ask this in the MacBook Pro forum. This is the forum for the 13” white and black plastic MacBooks that were discontinued in 2010. You should also post this question there to increase your chances of getting an answer.

I cannot recall the DVD player ever being a place to "store" videos - it is simply an app to play videos.
If your machine is new, then iMovie should be included as the "shrunk" version of iLife is included with Lion (iMovie, Garageband, and iPhoto). However, iMovie is not a place to store videos either - it is a video editor. You import your clips and edit them in order to then burn to a DVD or share via a social media site.
Have you considered simply dragging the clips to your folder "Movies"? That would be a great place to just store them (please be aware that videos are usually large files, so keep your hard drive space in mind so you keep a minimum free and available for the OS to operate properly):

Do I need to buy a larger Time Capsule?
Probably yes. You might be able to get the full backup of the new MacBook Pro on the Time Capsule, but it will not be long before the Time Capsule is out of space.
Better to add a new Time Capsule and backup the new MacBook Pro to the new Time Capsule, and keep the old MacBook backing up to the old Time Capsule.
If you do not want to add a new Time Capsule, another option would be to erase the Time Capsule disk and start over again with new backups of both Macs and move forward.

  • I have a newer MacBook Pro with an AMD processor.  It is my understanding that Parallels can only be used on Mac's with Intel Processors.  Is that true and if so does anyone have recommendations about how to have a windows side to my Mac

Then it either is a pirate clone or you are misinformed.
Apple Computer has never used AMD processors in its products.
However, the Graphics Processing Unit (GPU) is a Radeon unit, which is an AMD subsidiary. Parallels, VMWare, VirtualBox will all work fine with the Intel Core i7 or i5 CPU that powers the Mac, and use the AMD Radeon GPU that drives the displays.

  • How do I share a 3G USB modem connected to my Macbook Pro with my Airport Express?

Hi. I have a 3g USB modem connected to my macbook pro, and I want to try share the signal with my Airport Express (latest model).
Now before everybody screams that it can't be done, I was searching the forums and found a discussion in which someone describes how to do it from 2008, unfortunately it is archived and I couldn't ask the author directly, and the description doesn't go into much detail.
In the thread, the author describes turning internet sharing on to share the USB modem, creating a network on the macbook, then renaming the Airport Express network name the same as the macbook, and setting the AX to Join a Network.
Problem being there is no description of whether the macbook connected to the AX via ethernet or wifi, what settings were changed on the AX eg bridge mode.
Is this possible in theory, and has anybody had any success sharing a 3g USB modem via a macbook pro to an AX? I know there are other options like getting 3g ethernet modems, unfortunately not an option in this case - new house, waiting for DSL to be installed, 2-3 month wait.
    Thanks

Well, you cannot use the 3G USB modem plugged directly into the Express. However, you can configure your MacBook Pro to do 'Internet sharing' (SysPrefs>Sharing) over the Ethernet port, and then connect your Express into the Ethernet port. Alternatively, you could always get your MacBook to 'create a wireless network'.
new house, waiting for DSL to be installed, 2-3 month wait.
You could always look for open WiFi networks to *cough*borrow*cough* .

  • How to use my time capsule on my new macbook pro retina (time machine error)

    Hello all,
I've been using my old mac for a while with my time capsule, but recently I bought the new macbook pro retina and I wanted to use the time capsule as the backup disk on the new one. However, whenever I try to run the backup, a message appears "The backup disk image “/Volumes/Data/XXX’s MacBook.sparsebundle” is already in use."
I wanted to override the settings so that the new macbook will use the time capsule for its backup disk instead of the old one, as I will no longer be using it.
I was wondering if anyone had this problem before and if anyone know how I can solve it?
    Thank you

You could delete the old backup from your old laptop? If you need to keep it then you need to rename that folder so that your new macbook can creatie its own file in the same name.

    Ryan

  • PowerBook G4 using external HD for iTunes to new MacBook Pro

How can I move my iTunes library (all music, movies, ratings history, etc) from my old PowerBook G4 using an external hard drive to my new MacBook Pro?
Migration Assistant will not work due to incompatible versions of the software, and the Apple Store/Training Crew/Genuis Bar couldn't help me and told me to connect to the external HD, drag my music over and start a new library.  But my goal here is to not lose almost ten years of ratings, playlists and history.
The iTunes program files (Version 9.2.1) are on the old PowerBook G4, but all actual music files are on the external.  I know this isn't going to be easy, but how can I make this happen without starting over???
Thank you all for your help,
    EH

I think I know hte issue but not the immediate solution. Your external drive doesn't have the full library, just the media files. The library files which have all the things you see in hte iTunes browser are on your old computer so you don't see it when you plug the drive into your new computer.
You could try copying just the library files from the hard drive of your old computer to the same location on your new computer, then try opening hte external drive. This might work.
Incidentally, mpst people put their whole library, not just hte media files, on their external drives so it is all a neat package for moving between computers.  I don't think, though, that this will be a simple matter of copying the library files to the hard drive because the location references might not work

  • Is it possible to use my snow leopard software for my macbook pro on an iMac or more iMacs?

Here is the reason why i'm asking this question that sounds silly to me in a way...... i got the 2011 15.4inches macbook pro 2 weeks ago ..... it came with the last snow leopard os x but since the lion was out and i was eligible for an upgrade i got it striaght away for free in the apple store and did not use the snow leopard.... now here is the situation.... i was talking to a friend last night and he told me to give him the CD for the OS x snow leopard that he wanted to upgrade his imac to that....but i told him that i did not think that would work because in most cases i know even in windows os these kind of CDs are protected and are made for that pc it is installed on but he kept on insisting it would work and telling me how experienced he is in using a mac for 7 years and what ever cd protection happened to only pc and not mac(the funny thing is that he said he has experience but has never tried it before) so to cut the long story short i told him that i would get back to him....... so here i am again today asking a question that might even prove my thoughts right.....
valuable community.....PLEASE IS IT POSSIBLE TO USE MY MACBOOK PRO OPERATING SYSTEM CD ON A FRIENDS IMAC?  because i dont believe it is possible because if it was, no one will ever upgrade to any os in a mac... they will just look for oppotunities to get it from a friend or family who has one.... hope im not the only one thinking that this question is a silly one lol....... please i really need your answers to show this experienced mac user of 7 years since he told me that i can install my os on more macs.... how possible it that...i dont know...
Thanks in Advance for your replies

    Hi Chris,
I'm guessing it's the "old" gray disc, which is usually hardware specific to your exact model. I'd keep it if I were you, you may want to install it.
