Is it possible to use airtunes to play music streamed via safari

I have recently set up my Mac so I can play music from iTunes through my stereo in my lounge using Airtunes.
I would like to be able to play music via Airtunes when streaming it over the internet (eg BBC iPlayer or an internet radio station).
Is there a way this can be done?

Hi,
I'm pretty sure you can't do it with the basic OS X software.
You can do it with some third-party software though:

I don't have airtunes so I am speaking from a theory perspective. It looks like airtunes works with itunes and I know many streaming stations can also be played through itunes so I would think it could be done at least to some extent. You might have to save a link to the stream and then open the link file in itunes to get it to add it to your list (I have done this with a streaming station).
For other stations I don't know if you could select airtunes as a sound output option for general computer sound output in the sound control panel.

  • Using iTunes to Play Music Stream On LAN

I have a Denon ASD-3W which serves as an iPod dock and accesses radio internet stations (via vTuner website) and plays them through my stereo. That works great. Given that stream is playing across my LAN, how would I tap into that using iTunes and play it on several other speakers around my house (Airport Extreme)? I have tried opening a URL using the IP address of the ASD-3W but thad has not worked. Do I possibly need to access a specific port?

Perhaps you should ask in the iTunes discussion area.

Can I use Rhaposody to play music with AirPort?

To stream non-iTunes audio sources from your PC to the AirPort Express Base Station (AX) you will need a third-party application, like Rogue Amoeba's Airfoil for Windows.

I'm a singer and recently bought a Macbook Pro.  I'd like to use it to play music through my PA system but it doesn't seem compatible as no sound is coming through.  It is however coming through my smaller Bose system.  My main system is Alto APM80.1000 with Proel speakers.

Hi it's a headphone jack and two larger (microphone type jacks?) at the other end.  Please excuse my not not knowing the name of anything - I know where everything goes but not the names!  So if I press Alt and the sound icon at the same time what output should I be choosing?
I've tried plugging into the red and white tape in tape out and the front of the amp with a headphone/red and white jack lead and a slight sound comes out but of bad quality.
When I'm going through my bose it's an easy headphone to headphone lead and is working perfectly.
    Thanks

I finally resolved my problem after spending way too much time on it. I simply handed my 160GB iPod to my husband to put his fav Stones & Beatles songs on and I went back to my 80GB Microsoft Zune which has never disappointed me.
After spending so much time trying to figure this out I did finally take it back to Apple Store who performed a diagnostic and found there was a problem with the device. They replaced it with a refurbished one which has similar issues. All I wanted to do was listen to my music. Was that too much to ask? So I am happy to be free of this problematic device. No more Apple for me!!

I would think a 15" with the i7 CPU. You can get a 13" with the i7 CPU but the 15" has a dedicated graphic chip along with the intergrated one.
You will also need to upgrade the hard drive to a faster 7200RPM model instead of the standard 5400RPM model that comes with all MBPs. The Sibelius website recommends the 7200RPM or a SSD. You will also be better off installing 8GBs of RAM.
Both of those upgrades can be made after you buy a MBP for much less then Apple charges for the same upgrades and you get to keep the original RAM and hard drive.

  • Is it possible to use AirTunes without a wireless router?

At home, I have a MacBook and use AirTunes with my AirPort Express on my home wireless network. It all works great without any problems.
But I also occasionally provide music on at the neighborhood pool (for kid's parties, etc) which does not have any kind of internet connection (no WiFi, nothing).
I was wondering if it's possible to stream the music wirelessly from my MacBook to my AirPort Express (which will be plugged into a sound system) without a WiFi network present? In other words, is there some kind of way to set up wireless communication between the MacBook and the AX without having to bring and configure a wireless router at the pool?
    PS) More info:
The reason I want to do it wirelessly is so that I can locate the MacBook somewhere away from the sound system to not only protect it from water/traffic, etc, but also somewhere where the kids won't see it and "fight" over changing songs, etc.
And also, as a side question, I have Apple's "Remote" app on my iPhone. Just wondering if I can control iTunes with my iPhone; again without the presence of a WiFi router?
    Thanks very much in advance!

In other words, is there some kind of way to set up wireless communication between the MacBook and the AX without having to bring and configure a wireless router at the pool?
Yes and no. The AX IS a wireless router. You would simply configure the AX to create a wireless network. Your MacBook would connect to that network and stream the music.

  • Using iTunes to play music on two Airport Expresses simultaneously

    Hi everyone,
I'm trying to set up a system where iTunes 7.0 on my Windows 2000 PC can play simultaneously to two Airport Expresses.
I've set up the first AE (call it AE1) by connecting it to my LAN with an Ethernet cable; it appears in the Base Station Chooser and I can find it and set it up. I set it up to 'Create a wireless network' and check both boxes in the iTunes tab, and give it an iTunes speaker name. At this point, everything's happy: I can see AE1 in iTunes, and play music to the speakers, and my Nintendo Wii can even get to the internet using AE1. I've left AE1 plugged in to the network.
Now the problem: I bought another Airport Express, call it AE2, and I want the new one to hook up to the existing network and let me play iTunes through the new one, as well. I connected AE2 to my LAN with ethernet and it showed up in the Base Station Chooser; I set it up to 'Join an Existing Wireless Network' and gave it the exact same Network Name: "Mike Home Network". I checked both checkboxes in the iTunes tab and gave the speakers a name. I then unhooked the ethernet, plugged in the speakers to AE2, and unplugged and replugged AE2 to restart it. The light flashes green, goes to yellow for a while, then goes solid green. (So I assume it found a network to hook up to.) iTunes shows the Multiple Speakers button, and I can pick AE1, but no sign of AE2.
I restart iTunes, but it still can't find AE2. Some support suggests using the wizard, but I'm on 2000 so it's not supported.
    So my questions:
    * Can I verify somehow that AE2 hooked up to the network that AE1 created? Ping it or telnet to it or something? (I can ping AE1 just fine.)
    * Is 'Join an Existing Network' the right way to do this?
(I also tried WDS with no success, but I may have done it wrong.)
    * AE1 is distributing IP addresses; AE2 is not. Is this correct?
Access Control is turned off on both AE's.
I have Wireless Security set to 'Off' on both.
(I'll re-enable it once I get these two going.)
    They're about 20 feet apart.
Wireless channel is 'Automatic' on both. (Also tried it with both on channel 8)
Firmware on both AE's is 6.3
    Itunes is version 7
Any suggestions? Anything at all, I'm absolutely stumped and this seems like it should be really straightforward....
      Windows 2000

Figured it out! thanks everyone for the help.
In the end, I fixed it by turning off 'Distribute IP Addresses' on AE1.
The problem was, if you want iTunes to find the wireless Airport Express, iTunes must be able to see the wireless AE's IP address. When AE1 was distributing IP addresses, it was performing NAT, which meant that iTunes on my PC could not distinguish between AE1 and AE2 behind it.
This is not clear in any of the documentation; I can't be the first person to be confused by this.

  • Is it possible to use NAS storage (which is wired via LAN to AirPort Extreme) as a Time Machine destination?

Is it possible to use NAS storage (WD My Cloud EX2 or WD My Cloud EX4) which is wired via LAN to current AirPort Extreme, as a Time Machine backup destination?
There are two reasons I came up with this question.
    - Connecting via Ethernet should be faster than USB 2.0 connection
    - 8TB NAS storages are slightly cheaper than 8TB USB HDD
If it is impossible, I am planning to buy My Book Thunderbolt Duo 8TB and wire it for MacBook Pro directly for the purpose of Time Machine backup.
I have a concern with my primal idea of backing up via WiFi, as I tend to handle big files when doing music production or movie editing. I wonder if this affect the performance of MacBook Pro, as it might take more time to complete each backup via WiFi.
Many thanks for your advice in advance,
    Masa
MacBook Pro Retina 15 inch (Mid 2012)
Processor 2.6 GHz Intel Core i7
    Memory 16GB 1600 MHz DDR3

I would appreciate any advice which could include aother sollition of secure and practical backup.

  • Using AE to play music on stereo

I purchased the AE to be able to play music from iTunes on my stereo in another part of the house.
However, the AE only seems to be found if I have the ethernet cable connected, and is not discoverable when it is off the cable and should be using the wireless connection.
    Here is my setup today:
Desktop computer connected via ethernet cable to the router (it does not have a wireless card).
Airport Express in another part of the house (where the wireless is known to work), connected via audio cable to the stereo.
With this setup, the AE is not recognized.
However if I change the set up to put the AE on the ethernet cable, suddently it works perfectly. The problem, I do not have an ethernet connection near the stereo.
    Am I doing something wrong?

Try the information in the following article
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1731?viewlocale=en_US
I think that you want your AX to join an existing network, which is the one that is created by your wireless access point (it needs to be broadcasting its name ... at least for the setup.)
If you can't connect that way, then try connecting the AX directly to your access point with ethernet cable. See if you can configure it. If not, then connect it directly to your computer. You will have to enter the information from your access point, including encryption hexidecimal key (not passphrase). If you are using WEP, consider changing to WPA or WPA2. WEP doesn't always "play nice" with Apple products.

  • Using Siri to play music

I can't get Siri to play music in my music library.  For example, I have a playlist on my iPhone entitled Gilbert and Sullivan.  When I say to Siri, "Play music by Gilbert and Sullivan," Siri responds, "sorry, something's gone wrong.". Well, what's gone wrong?

Thanks and I hope yours works soon!
I can use spotlight to search for cloud music but it is spotty at best.  There's a clear delay that doesn't exist when searching for local files (I switched off iTunes Match for comparison and you can really see the difference).  However, the number of results are limited when searching through the cloud and they are often randomly generated or not relevant at all.  I have to say though, any siri-related performance with the itunes match service is good news as they certainly haven't announced it and I'm sure once they've fixed the bugs we'll get a great many ads touting its integration
If you haven't tried it yet, other successful phrases to use include "play **** on shuffle" and it will do a better job at shuffling through an artist's collection (great if the first song it picks is from a live album).  Secondly, if you tell it to "skip to the next track", it will do so No rewind, fast foward function yet but it will pause and continue playing if you open up the Siri interface and tell it to do so.
Best of luck finding new stuff!

  • Is it possible to use AirTunes for Logic Pro?

    Greetings fellow Logic users =)
I finally got Logic Pro and boy am I impressed! However, there's one question I have that I hope shows promise.. Currently, my monitors are connected to the Airport Express so I could listen to music through AirTunes. Since Logic is now Apple owned, I assumed it would have a similar output setting. However, I cannot find anything in the program that would allow me to stream music through AirTunes so I can mix using my monitors wirelessly. Is this a possibility??
    Many thanks =)

AirTunes is a part of iTunes, it's not an audio driver.
But you can use this to stream any audio source to an Airport Express:
    http://rogueamoeba.com/airfoil/mac/
I've used it to beam a Logic mix to a PA to check how mixes will sound, works great.
However, there will be too much latency for mixing, due to the buffering involved. As for live playing instruments - forget it.
Connect up your speakers to a proper audio interface for Logic.

  • Is it possible to have  iTunes installed in my computer and use it to play music which is installed on an external drive ?

To save space on my internal Hard Drive , I am trying to find a way so , iTunes can be installed on my computer's internal drive but the music files to be in an external drive. When I want to listen to music , to be able to select where the iTunes will read music files from ( Inetrnal or external drive ). I couldn't do that since iTunes wants to import the music files prior to playing  them.

I typed "move itunes library" into the search bar at the top of this page by "Support and found:
iTunes for Windows: Moving your iTunes Media folder
"If your hard drive is nearly full after loading all your music and other media into iTunes, or if you just want to move all those music and media files to another hard drive on your system, here's a way to make the move while retaining all your playlists, ratings, and play history."
