Is it possible to use any nvidia 8800GT in my Mac Pro?

Hi,
I have a 1st gen Mac Pro, with PCIe slots. Is it possible to use any 8800GT or do i have to get one from the apple webshop. This upgrade hasn`t come to Norway yet, but i`ve found some other great 8800GT`s. I don`t see why i can`t buy a MSI 8800GT (as long as it`s PCIe and not 2.0).
What do you think? Please help me.. =/

Thanks for the replies.
Thats a real shame, though. The Upgrade kit cost the equivalent of $475 in Norway. Thats insane for a $170 graphics card. I found one computer store that had it listed at about $355, which i find strange. How could another computer store sell apple hardware cheaper then the official apple reseller?
I find this whole situation frustrating. I can't buy from nvidia.com either as the taxes and stuff would likely end up in the $200 area. For once i wish i lived in the US.
Thanks for the help. =)

The catridge does not list it as compatible, but some resellers list it among supported printers.

Here is a good link that will provide a list of cartridges compatible with any HP product:
    https://h30042.www3.hp.com/SureSupply/
In this case it does not show the 88's being compatible with the OJ Pro 5300K.
    Hope that helps

The answer is yes. If you use the "alias" method (in iPhoto's Advanced Preference pane - don't copy files when importing) you can use your own source folder system. You can also share the source files with another image management application. There are some unique issues, however. Any edit of a photo by iPhoto is not seen by the other application as the edited version is saved in iPhoto's Modified folder. If the other application can perform edits on the source file and save the edits to the actual source file, iPhoto's thumbnail of that file will not reflect the change but the edit will display when you open the photo in iPhoto's edit window or use that photo in a book or slideshow. If iPhoto hasn't edited before hand. If iPhoto edits the other application's edited version the source file is not touched. Also any file added to an existing source folder has to be manually imported into iView and then moved within iPhoto from its roll to the roll representing the source folder it was placed in via the Finder. When moved in iPhoto the source file will physically be moved to that folder in the Finder. Hope I haven't confused you with this convoluted description.
So with some quirks you can use another application like iView MediaPro on the same set of source files.
I do the above with iPhoto and iView.

AirPlay Mirroring requires a second-generation Apple TV or later, OS X 10.8 or better and is supported on the following Mac models: iMac (Mid 2011 or newer), Mac mini (Mid 2011 or newer), MacBook Air (Mid 2011 or newer), and MacBook Pro (Early 2011 or newer). • CUDA NVIDIA video card to Mac Pro 2013

Is there any way to get the Mac Pro 2013 to run a CUDA enabled NVIDIA video card?

This graphic from ifixit.com shows the two special cards, still with heatsink paste in place, just after removal. The silver diamond surrounds the big graphics chip, just inside the RAMs on the card. Those RAMs contact heatsink pads on the central cooler. The whole business is secured with four screws beyond the RAMs, roughly centered on the sides of the diamond. So the Big GPU chip and the RAMs are pressed with heatsink paste and heatsink pads, respectively, against the central cooler. This is in lieu of allowance for a separate fan (which in many "standard" cards is what takes up the space of the second slot.
Power appears to be supplied by lugs in the outer corners of each card, so the cards are deliberately not interchangeable. One has connections that feed to the graphics outputs, the other has connections for the PCIe SSD socket.
The text says those connectors resemble the CPU daughter card connectors used in the late G4 and G5s.

  • How can I use an SSD in a 2006 Mac Pro 1,1 2.66Ghz

    Hi everyone,
I'm trying to work out how to use my new SSD in an old 2006 MacPro. Bear with me, I'm not an expert and trying to work out what is best for me.
I recently bought a 1TB Samsung SSD 840EVO to use in my old Mac Pro, not to use as my main machine, but as a network slave to save RAM with sound sample libraries.
I also got an Apricorn SATA III Velocity Solo x2 - Extreme Performance SSD Upgrade Kit to get high speeds
    http://www.apricorn.com/products/desktop-ssd-hdd-upgrade-kits/vel-solox2.html?gc lid=CLOi46bvqMICFVGCMgodPG8AdA
After installing the HD using the SATAIII connector in a PCIe slot, I did a hard drive test and realised I could only get about 160mbps, not 300-500mpbs which I think the SSD should run at. I had my friend test it on his machine too, and we realised the problem is the "Link Width" which says "x1" and not "x4" or something, so that the speed isn't running at full speed.
    So apparently it's not compatable.
Apparently what I CAN do is install it in a regular Hard Drive bay with a sled, which will be SATA II ... will that work?
    I think I can use this: http://www.amazon.com/Mac-Pro-2006-2008-Sled-Drives/dp/B00AN55034
Anyway - is this what I should be doing to get the fastest available connection?
Any advice would be great- thanks!!!

SATA II is generally just fine, no fuss no muss, for the system. Using PCIe to boot adds problems and most if not all such PCIe SSD cards do NOT WORK in 32-bit Mac Pro 1,1 and 2,1 (and the 3,1 is also sometimes difficult with some cards).
Data uses though are useful, work, and benefit. Lightroom, Aperture, scratch, even iPhoto - all those graphic libraries.
I would rewrite and make it "will the native SATA II drive bays" work, and the answer to that is YES. But not faster.
You have a 4x and 8x slot, so one of those is fine.
It is the reads and zero latency seeks along with queue depth and high 90K IOs per sec that help an SSD shine.
Putting a 250GB or 500GB EVO 840 is the easiest and best return on system improvement you can make for $120-240 (plus $14 for Icy Dock adapter).
Even the 2008 has two 4x PCIe 1.1 slots. The 2009 has PCIe 4x 2.1 slots that share bandwidth and cap out (only learned from stripping SSDs using two PCIe cards and 2-4 SSDs), so they aren't perfect either! ONLY the 5,1 really has the best PCIe design and setup.
Sonnet only supports or recommends their Tempo Pro which is what I bought, so I don't know off hand how well yours works and if it even will. Some cards do require EFI 64-bit, AND 10.8.x or later, and maybe even PCIe 2.0 - but only to work, ie they don't work or not supported in PCIe 1.0... but NOT about the bandwidth.
Booting in 10 seconds is nice. Launching a full dozen apps in 10 seconds (and ready to use) also. Only larger program suites takes 20 seconds now.
250MB/sec is nothing to sneeze at when it comes to boot drive SSD.

  • Use of NVIDIA 8800GT Card in 1st Generation Mac Pro

That's the right card. The Mac Pro (early 2008) uses the MB137Z/A

  • Is it possible possible to use a WD "My Passport for Mac" External HD with a Chromebook?

    Hello . . .

I'm wondering if it is possible to use a Western Digital "My Passport for Mac" to store and retreive my images as an external drive for both storage and retrieval using a CB.
Does any one know if I will have to do any special formatting to use this drive with a Chromebook? And, if so, what do I need to know/do to do it?
Thanks very much for any information that might be provided.

  • Is it possible to use creative cloud online with both Mac/windows system (on the same computer, bootcamp) without paying twice ?

Hello, I work with a Macbook pro, divided into mac and win 8 (with Bootcamp), is it possible to use Creative Cloud subscription with both system without paying twice.
Bonjour, J'utilise un Macbook pro partitionné Bootcamp mac et windows 8, est-il possible que l'abonnement à Creative Cloud en ligne fonctionne indifféremment dans les deux systemes (sur le même ordi), sans payer deux fois.

Your subscription allows for two functioning installations (normally on separate machines, but I imagine you could install the two as you indicate).

  • [CS2]Is it possible to use XCode to develop plugin on MAC?

    Hi,
Im new to Indesign Plugin Development. Is it possible to use XCode to develop Indesign Plugin on Mac 10.3.9 for Indesign CS2?
SDK says that the IDE to be used is Codewarrior 9.3.I have Codewarrior 8.3
installed in my system. Will i be able to compile plugin in this version of codewarrior?
    Please give me your suggestion.
    Thanks in advance.
    myRiaz

I'll back up Peter on this one. InDesign is tied to the specific C++ ABI and therefore you can only use the same compiler to build plugins. There can even be problems with differing versions of CodeWarrior.
Unfortunately I don't have a good answer for you as CW is generally no longer available for purchase. I'd start a conversation with Developer Technical Support to begin with. You can also perhaps search Ebay. Finally, as I recall CW10 was released for free from MetroWerks. If you can find that there is a chance, however slim, you could get CW10 to build a CS2 plugin.

  • Can I use a Asus Nvidia gt640 with a mac pro 2006?

Just got my first intel mac! Not the newest thing but it will do. I just have a quick question, can I use the Nvidia gt640 2gb with a Mac pro 2006 with no flashing of the system or the card. Thank's. -Edward

First, you need to look at what OS version you have.  Mnay people (myself included) running some of the newer OS version are using Nvidia cards not released for the Mac.  OS X Mavericks for example will support these cards, but you lose some functionaility (boot screen, etc.)  Once the machine is up and running they work fine.
With a 2006 model you are before the 3.1 machines and therefore limited in the OSX version you can run.  I think you need at least 10.7 Lion.
So if you can run 10.7 the answer is probably, but then you will lose some basic functionality.  For many this is not important.

  • Using two different GPUs in a Mac Pro (4,1)

Hi, so I've been Google'ing, and I've thus far been unable to find any hint whatsoever to my (somewhat difficult-to-understand) question.
    So here it is:
I'm planning to purchase a Radeon 5870 to upgrade from my dated nVidia GT 120 GPU. However, there's a catch. The 5870 is not the Mac edition, and I do not want to buy a Mac edition card as it's unreasonably expensive, considering how old the card is (2009). I know there's a way to flash a Mac-compatible BIOS onto the card, but it seems unsafe and I don't feel comfortable doing something like that. So is it possible to use my GT 120 to strictly handle the graphics from the Boot Camp/boot screen GUI (as PC cards can't display those things to my knowledge) and use my Radeon 5870 card to process all of the graphics, etc. after the system has booted? Would I have to change the cable (DVI) from the GT 120 to the HD 5870? And if that's the case, are there any specific steps that I have to do? as in go into the settings panel or something?
    Thanks in advance,
    NinjaBanana0911

I only rarely needed to see the boot screen. The default OS you want to boot from can be set in Windows or Mac OS X, and "X" on startup will bring up Mac OS X.
run Windows on its own drive. Slide Mac OS drive out, it has to boot Windows.
So yes I have run Windows and Windows only at times, with a pure PC card, no boot screen.
Only during install or if you HAD to use Option key, as even Recovery Mode can be done from keyboard.
As for drivers, yes there are a few Apple drivers but the only one you might need had to do with power management and good ole Boot Camp control panel to change the startup disk setting.
Not only would I not put Windows on same boot drive I would also clone both systems with respective tools so you have a good working - bootable! - clone of each. CCC for Mac, and Paragon's Clone OS or their HardDisk Manager Suite 2014.

  • Using Multiple Keyboard/Mice on single Mac Pro

    Hi Folks,
I've tried to search this topic, with no joy.
Basically, I would like to run a Mac Pro with dual monitors, and 2 users, working simultaneously. In this app, I would like each user to be able to run applications on their own screen and use separate Keyboard/Mouse for the applications on their separate screens. The screens would run as an extended desktop, but the applications on each screen would need to recognize their designated I/O (Keyboard/Mouse) device.
I see plenty about running 2 systems with 1 keyboard/mouse... but not the other way around.
Has anyone come across this mode of operation before, I am sure it is possible to do.... but would have to be some software behind it, so that the data streams from the proper I/O makes it to the proper application, even when multiple windows of the same app may be running simultaneously (like 2 windows of Safari).
    Any thoughts?
    Dual G4, 17" PB G4   Mac OS X (10.4.9)

To give a bit of background behind my interest.
I homeschool my 2 children, and am looking to purchase a new Mac. In dual monitor mode, I see the possiblity to limit my purchase to one system, where each user is able to have their own monitor and I/O control. An additional advantage is that in Mirror monitor mode, I can control the system, while they are able watch a lesson. Using this method, I would purchase a higher power system which provides my kids plenty of power, even when they are both using the system, and gives me a higher power system when I use it by myself (sort of like a super-user). Basically the best of both worlds, and the actual price resides around the cost of 2 independent systems, but gives me a high power system for other activities.
I can envision a lot of applications for such activities. Some I could see in a networked environment. I am actually surprized we have not seen any office applications go to the model of multi-player gaming, where many users can work on the same document simultaneously. There are of course database applications which operate in this manner, but I am not aware of any productivity apps.

  • Can an iMac be used as a monitor for a Mac Pro?

    Hi all,
I'm getting nowhere looking in the search, so I'm hoping someone can clear something up for me:
is it possible to use an iMac as a display for a Mac Pro?
I am beginning to think I'd better get a Mac Pro, but I already have an iMac, for which I've been researching getting external storage so I can do Final Cut Studio editing and back up of it all... as someone suggested, might be better in the long run to just get it all in the Mac Pro, and have the option and simplicity to upgrade as and when... but then there's the need for a display for the Mac Pro, which does whack the price up... but if I could use this iMac, what a beautiful monitor...
I thought someone said that Final Cut would not allow another computer to be attached though... is that the case, anyone know?
Thanks for any knowledge and help, much appreciated... I'm learning to not rush into anything, as you learn more the whole picture seems to change!
    Cheers, Syd

The current 27-inch iMac can. Other iMac models can't outside of a VNC setup or ScreenRecycler; all such solutions require a standalone monitor for setup and troubleshooting.
