Is it possible to use imessage only in wifi and sms when no wifi is available?

is it possible to use imessage only in wifi and sms when no wifi is available? I have unlimited texting but only 200mb of data. I know how to turn i messaging on/off manually but is there away to set it so it does it automatically?

The only option you have is to turn off cellular data completely. You are correct, there is no setting for cellular data for messages. If you toggle iMessage off/on multiple times, you will end up with problems, since others will not know if you have iMessage off/on, and will continue to try to send iMessages to you. Also, you may find you will have problems with iMessage activating again after turning it off. iMessages do not use very much data, but if you are using data for other reasons, that could use up the limited pool of data you mentioned

  • Using iMessage with iPods/iPads and SMS with iPhones

I prefer using SMSs to text other people with iPhones but I still want to use iMessage to chat with people who own an iPad and an iPod. What do I do? I don't want to desactivate iMessage.

The only way I know to do what you want is to disable/enable your iMessage account as needed.
Of course, every time you disable and then re-enable iMessage in message settings, you may have a "pause" while it re-activates your iMessage account.
Out of curiosity, why do you even want to do this?  The integration of iMessage is intended to be seemless - if the devices at each end can use, it will be used, but if not a regular SMS is sent.  You can force it as you wish, but it will be a pain in the rear to do, if you ask me.

  • I have iPad, my wife's iPone 4 and my new iPhone 4s all on iOS 5 and using the same Apple account. That is convenient in many ways except I can't use iMessage from my iPad and iPhone to my wife's iPhome. Any solution?

When iMessage is enabled on all 3 devices, they just seem to mirror all iMessage conversations on all of them. Can I configure iMessage for my wife's iPhone such that it becomes a separate entity with that respect while staying on the same Appte account with other our devices?

Actually, there is a solution, and it sounds to go against what you want until you realize how well it works.
Seperate Apple IDs is the solution, but you can granularly sign into different things with different IDs.  Now, I'm in the exact same situation as you and saw the exact same problem.  Here was our solution:
    1) Create new Apple IDs for everyone that didn't already have one.  This meant my wife and daughter needed new IDs.
    2) Go into Settings -> Message and select "Receive At..."
    3) Change the Apple ID in iMessage on a per-device basis to the new ID for who ever owns that device.  For example, the new ID for my wife went on her phone, same with my daughter.
Apple IDs are free, and you don't have to change the ID on every part of your phone.  For example, we still have the generic family ID on iCloud and the store, but we have our own unique ones signed in on iMessage and Game Center.  From what I can tell, this is the best of both worlds.

  • Is it possible to use iMessage only over WiFi, and not use cellular data?

When I go to Settings -> Cellular, there is no toggle for messages. Is there some way I could selectively disable cellular data usage for messages? That is, I want messages to be sent with SMS instead of data even if cellular data is available, but not if WiFi is available. If WiFi is available, then I would want the message to use the WiFi.
My situation is that I will be traveling internationally and will have a plan that allows unlimited texting but limited data. I don't want to have to toggle iMessage on and off every time I connect to WiFi to prevent data use with messages!
    Thanks for any help!

Other users have reported the same blocking.  This one gives a good explaination.

There is no specific charge for using iMessage. However, if you are using via 3g4g connection, then yes, it will count towards your data plan limits.

    Hi barryfromwarrington,
Welcome to the Support Communities!  There are two things I can think of to keep your Stepdad's information separate from yours on the computer and the iPad.   On the computer, he should have his own administrative account, and on the iPad he needs his own Apple ID for iTunes and iCloud services.  Here is some basic information to get started.  I don't know if you have a Mac or Windows computer, so I'll include info for both.)
OS X Yosemite: Set up users on your Mac

OS X Yosemite: Set up users on your Mac
If your Mac has multiple users, you should set up an account for each person so he or she can personalize settings and options without affecting other users.
    Add a user
Choose Apple menu > System Preferences, then click Users & Groups.
Click the lock icon  to unlock it, then enter an administrator name and password.
Click Add  below the list of users.
Click the New Account pop-up menu, then choose a type of user.
administrator: An administrator can add and manage other users, install apps, and change settings.
Enter a full name for the new user. An account name is generated automatically. To use a different account name, enter it now—you can’t change it later.
Enter a password for the user, then enter it again to verify. Using a password hint is recommended to help the user remember his or her password.
    Click Create User.
For an administrator, select “Allow user to administer this computer.”

Sorry, no way around this limitation on an iOS device. To use a new iCloud account, you need to create such on a computer first, then setup the account on your iOS device.

  • HT3529 Can i set my phone to use imessage only when connected to wifi?

I just got a new iPhone and i like how i can use imessage to text my friends because i don't get much service at my house but i have wifi. However, when i'm out i'd like to send normal texts without imessage so it doesn't use my data. Is there a way to set my phone to only use imessage when connected to wifi? I know i can manually turn off imessage but i would rather not have to turn it off every time whenever i am out.

    No.
Text only uses very little data - miniscule, and MMS with the iPhone uses cellular data.

  • Can I use imessage on an ipad and still get normal sms texts on my android galaxy s4?

I want to purchase an ipad. I plan on using it basically as my phone whenever I am connected to wifi. So I can imessage when I'm connected to wifi..but when I'm driving or working, I will have my galaxy s4 on me as my phone. So if I'm not connected to wifi on the ipad and someone with an idevice imessages me, will it be a normal sms on my android galaxy s4? Or will it be stuck as an imessage on my ipad until I connect it to wifi?

If the person that is that is texting you is using an iPad, the message will be inaccessible until you connect to WiFi. The iOS messages app only works with other iOS devices. The iPhone can send and receive SMS messages from any phone.
You will not be able to text with Android phones using the Messages app on the iPad. You would need to purchase or download a third party texting app for that.

  • When I bought my iPad and set up iCloud and started using iMessage the picture that comes up when I send a picture is not me but my stepdaughter. How do I change it? The ID picture on my iMac is me

When I bought my iPad and set up iCloud I started using iMessage but when I type a note and hit send the picture that comes up is not me but some one else that I know. I don,t even have this picture in my iPhoto's so don't know where it came from. My ID picture on my MacBook pro is correct. I went to settings, then messages but did not see a place to change the picture. Any ideas?

You set the picture in Contacts.
Open Contacts, select the person then tap Edit.
Tap the photo to change it.

  • Is it possible to use JPDK to get  script_prefix and dad_name

    Ok... here's a cropped screehnshot
The rows in the top half of the page show the data where I have manually pulled the url into the third column.
    First column - company name
    second column - location
third column - I have been manually pulling the url and pasting it into this column
One the active line with the data "Boreal Camp Services & Outfitting" I have selected the text and hit Command-K to show the hyperlink associated with the data.... and that's the dialogue that opens. I have simply been copying the url from this point and pasting it into the third column.
So... the question is... can I somehow create a script/formula/automator that will do this across the entire sheet?
I tried to record using automator... didn't work... but I don't really know what I'm doing there.
