Is it possible to use the old iMac 2010 21inch as an external monitor for my 15inch Macbook retina?

Is it possible to use the old iMac 2010 21inch as an external monitor for my 15inch Macbook retina? E.g. Using a mini-display cable to connect from the imac mini display port to thunderbolt port on my macbook.

Apple shows only the 27" version supporting Target Display Mode.

I would like to know if is possible to use the old iSight with the macbook pro (mid 2009)?

    Hi,
If the Mac has Firewire then you can use the External iSight
    (Other readers
If you have Firewire 800  then you will need an adapter to use the Firewire 400 camera - Search for the word Adpater and see posts by EZ Jim for more details)
Don't daisy-chain the camera with Hard Drives
The camera only uses a data rate of 200Mbps and the differences in Hard Drive data speeds can be an issue.
The External iSIght should work no matter what Firmware is on there currently.
There is some evidence that having the 1.0.3 version (Open the System Profiler > Hardware > Firewire) on the device makes it more compatible/useable in later OS versions
The Updater is included in Tiger and Leopard.
    Hard Drive/System/Library/CoreServices/iSight Updater/iSight Updater.app
An OS Update could "trigger" this to be run if you have Tiger
It can also be run as a Standalone.
It is Not present in Snow Leopard and although the documentation says this Firmware is an Audio update some people report that the camera needs the 1.0.3 Firmware to run.
(that could simply be the "Flashing" the Memory involved resets it enough to work)

  • Using my old iMac hard drive as an external to my macbook pro

    hi
I was wondering whether it's ok to use my imac's drive as an external hd for my new macbook.
You see, my imac had some trouble with the power supply and i decided not to fix it. Instead, I took out the drive and put it in a case so to use as an external for my new machine. The thing is, that drive is the operating drive of my imac, so it has everything on. (Appz, Library, Utilities, Operating system- i suppose).
I only need documents such as pictures/videos/mp3s etc on that drive. All the rest I have with my new drive.
What's the best thing to do?
Keep using it as it is?
Transfer the documents i want to save and format the drive?
    Something else?
    Thanks for your time.

  • HT3924 Can I use my 27"iMac late 2009 as an external display for a non apple product such as a cable box?

Can I use my 27"iMac late 2009 as an external display for a non apple product such as a cable box?

To get TV on your iMac off the cable box you would need to use an external TV tuner device such as the company ElGato is highly regarded for.  I have used one of their EyeTV products for many years with my iMac to watch television shows from my Comcasst cable TV box.  You can look at the models here:

Pair a wireless KB with the laptop and all should be well when you attach the laptop to the iMac and invoke TDM. But as Denny mentions, it does seem like the waste of a good iMac to use it in just this configuration. Why is the laptop primary?

  • Is there any way to disable Quick Find and use the old VS 2010 find?

I really dislike the Quick Find dialog. It's one of the few tools from the VS 2010 Productivity Pack that I always disabled. It looks like they've forced it on us with 2012 though, so I'm wondering if there's a way to disable Quick Find and use the old
    style Find dialog?

I wish the VS2012 devs would realize just how badly the Quick Find tool slows me down. It's poorly labelled, does a full search immediately after every single keystroke, and doesn't default to whatever's highlighted in the code when invoked. It
makes me feel like I'm the only one who uses the product.
    I agree with ElectricNinja and
Disable Quick Find in VS 2012
The quick find is terrible, and was one of the few tools that I'd disable in the 2010 pack.  wish there was a way to return to the good old normal find.

  • Is it possible to use the old AirPort Extreme to share disks?

I had bene thinking about possible disk sharing prior to the relaese of the New AirPort Extreme with AirPort Disk and would like to know if it would be possible to do this with the old AirPort Extreme Base Station.
I had thought of attaching storage to my Power Mac to allow others in the house the ability to use that storage, of course it would have to be on. It would be a better solution to have a disk on the LAN that all of the Mac's in the house could use as an extended Home folder.
If this is possible could someone explain how and what disk options would be available and good buys?
    Thanks

Using the old AEBS it was possible to access disks over the network, but not via the usb port. The Airport disk is a completely new feature in that it seems to operate via the USB port. Beyond that its hard to advise you as it has yet to be released and there is comparatively little product info on it as yet.

  • Possible to use DVD-RW drive from Asus laptop as external drive for S10?

I just purchased a Lenovo S10 netbook, which of course does not have a built in DVDRW.  I have an older Asus laptop with a removeable DVD-RW drive.  Is it possible to get some sort of case to turn it into a USB external drive?

the links that BaileyMoto posted will work for most laptop dvd/cd drives.  i've got one, and it works great with an nec drive in it.  only takes one cable for power and data, so you don't use up both ports on your computer.
only the newer laptop cd/dvd drives are sata.  your old drive from your asus should work fine in that enclosure.  the first link is for the board that comes in the enclosure that's in the second link.

I have both an iMac 2006 and a new 2011 MacBook Pro. I would like to use the old iMac as a second, prhaps third, monitor. How do I tturn my perfectly good iMac into a regular monitor?
Also, within my setup, I have an extra 19" vga display and a new Yiynova 19" interactive pen display. I would like to use my macbook pro as the main coputer and the rest as displays.

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities
If your iMac has got Mini-DVI, you have a 17, 20 or 24-inch iMac that doesn't support Target Display. Late 2009 and Mid 2010 27-inch iMacs, and iMacs with Thunderbolt can be used as external displays. Read > http://support.apple.com/kb/PH11302?viewlocale=en_US&locale=en_US
If your old iMac doesn't support Target Display mode, you can use ScreenRecycler to use your old iMac as an extended display for the new iMac. The only thing you need is that both Macs are connected to the same network

  • Can i use my 21.5" imac as an external monitor for my macbook pro?

I have a 21.5" iMac (with Intel processor) that I'm trying to use an external monitor for a new Macbook Pro.  Both machines have a thunderbolt input.  I bought a Belkin mini displayport to mini displayport connector, but my macbook is not displaying on the iMac.  I saw videos online showing this done with the 27" iMac, saying you just needed to press Command+F2, but that is not working for me.  I can't seem to find any posts confiming if I can use my 21.5" iMac this way though.

  • IMac 21,5" as an External monitor

    Hi everybody!
Can I use a iMac 21,5" as an external monitor for my MacBook Air via Thunderbolt?
I've been told that that is possible only with the bigger iMac 27"!
    Thankyou!

    Thankyou

    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=Thunderbolt/10.6/en/30822.html
it doesn't make differences between models.. It seems that ANY iMac with thunderbolt can serve as a target monitor to any computer with thunderbolt...

  • Is it possible to use the Mac mini as the start up disk with an older iMac (the basketball with moveable screen) as the monitor?

I really, really love the moveable screen to our old desktop iMac, and would hate to lose that feature, but, let's face it, it isn't Intel.  Since you can use other hard drives as start-up disks, would it be possible to do so in this instance? and how difficult would it be?

A slim chance, only if the new Mini was running a Universal version of 10.5.x, which the newest ones cannot.
But, you could display & run the Mini on the old iMacs screen with Screen Sharing on the Mini, & the iMac using Chicken of the VNC...
    http://sourceforge.net/projects/cotvnc/files/cotvnc/Chicken%20of%20the%20VNC%202 .0b4/cotvnc-20b4.dmg/download
Assuming the iMac is running an OSX version the CoVNC can use.

  • Is it possible to use the iMac display as en external monitor?

I want to connect my powerbook up to an iMac using the display as an external monitor for the laptop. Is this even possible? Any feedback would be appreciated.

    Hello,
I've seen this post at least a hundred times. Has
anyone actually had the gusto to try this idea?
I don't remember where the page was. But, I posted it's link several months ago in the forums during another discussion.
But, the guy who had done it to his iMac G3 had very poorly documented his conversion.
Basically, he took and wired signal to same signal on the monitor, and adapted his power supply and other items to work properly in the modified setup.
So, it is possible. You just need to sit down with the schematics and wire signal to same signal, and make sure you account for all the variables. It may take some resistors, etc. to get the adaptation just right.
I don't have any reason to do it myself, so I'm not going to tinker with it.
If I remembered the link, I'd post it. But, it wouldn't do much good anyway since his HTML formatting was severely messed-up. The end-result was accurate information that was scrambled around on the screen in such a way that you couldn't decipher it anyway. If he had done the HTML work properly, it would be in a formatted table. But, instead the information was scattered all over the screen in an illogical format. So, it wasn't of much real use.
