Is it possible to wake a computer on an Airport network?

I have a broken ankle, so I am spending a lot of time in bed with my iBook, but all the goodies I want are on my PMG5 which is on my Airport Express network. I know the IP address of it. I'm relatively sure I have the option "Wake when the modem detects a ring" set. I can hobble over to that room on my crutches to check that but I just would like to know what to do so that I don't spend too much time over there.
I would like to use Apple Remote Desktop and AFP from my iBook to access the PMG5, they are both all set up for that, but does the PMG5 need to be on, as opposed to sleep? Is there some third party program I can use to wake it up. I know I can leave it on and access files etc, but I would also like to be a little energy-conscious. Any advice you might have would be much appreciated by me and my lame broken ankle! Thank you so much!!!

Having your Express setup as a WDS should work as long as you have the option checked to "Enable Ethernet Port".
Give it a try and let us know. Your G5 would essentially be hooked up via ethernet. Make sure your are connected via Ethernet and not the Airport when trying this. Maybe even turn off the Airport Card when testing.
Maybe someday Apple will add the "Wake for Wireless network administrator access" in the Energy Saver Control Panel.

  • Is it possible to get regular computer audio via AirPort Express?

Is it possible to get regular computer audio (audio from websites, MacBook, etc.) on my speakers which are connected to my AirPort Express? Or is the only audio I can hear on my connected speakers the music that is on my iTunes?
Just obtained AirPort Express last night and was dissapointed that only the music on my iTunes plays on my connected speakers and not the normal/regular audio from websites and/or my MacBook.

Open the Network preference pane. Drag the AirPort item to the top of the list of connections (above Ethernet).

  • Wake sleeping computer from outside of LAN...?

    Hello.
I use Timbuktu to remotely access my home computer from work and my work computer from home. I'd like to not have to leave my computer on at home all day, but once it's set to sleep, Timbuktu can't access it. Is it possible (via 3rd party app perhaps?) to wake a computer remotely from outside the LAN? I am able to do this from within the LAN, but this doesn't help when trying to do the same from a machine outside the LAN.
    Any suggestions?
    Thanks,
    Kristin.

You need a router that has the ability to send a "magic" packet to a MAC address that you specify. Most new routers can't do this. The IOGEAR GWA504 wireless router can do this to a computer connected via a LAN cable but not by wireless. Very old SMC routers also had this capability. You login to the router from the WAN side and tell it to send a wake-up packet to a specific MAC address.

  • HT203167 I would like to download my music from an iPod to iTunes library is that possible? Our last computer got fried so unable to retreive info from it to new computer. Will I have to re-install all the music from CD's?

I would like to download my music from my iPod touch to iTunes library, is that possible?  Our old computer fried and we were unable to salvage any information.  All of the music that I downloaded from CD's is not in iTunes on our new computer. Will I have to reload all CD's?

It has always been very basic to always maintain a backup copy of your computer for this very occasion.
Have you failed to do this?
If so, then you will need to rip the dvds again

  • HT1420 Possibility to use 1 Computer - configured with 2 user accounts - each account uses a different Apple-ID for iTunes authorization ?

I wonder if it is possible to use 1 Computer (Macbook Pro)
    - configured with 2 (ore even more) user accounts (i.e. me + my kid)
    - and each user account has a different Apple-ID (account) for iTunes purchases & iTunes authorization ?
I woud think that is fine in terms of the underlying license agreement refereing to re-download purchased movies, shows, apps, etc.
However, it seams that there is that miraculous 90 days restriction, which I don't understand, and which allows me only to "authorise" the Computer under one or the other account. The switch is unfortunatelly only possible every 90 days ?!?
    Thanks anybody for help
    Oliver

The 90 day association doesn't stop you authorising an account, it only stops you from using another account for iTunes Match or automatic downloads or redownloading its past purchases : http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4627
There are a few methods listed on this page for how you could do it e.g. multiple user acounts, same iTunes but you having separate playlists, separate iTunes libraries : http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1495

Does anyone know how to change the checkbox in sys prefs > security > require password to wake this computer from sleep or screensaver via cli?

Code an AppleScript using the SystemsEvents>SecuritySuite>SecurityPreferencesObject>RequirePasswordtoWake then use the cli 'open' to run it?

  • When I wake my computer up from sleep all the Mail and Calendar accounts are offline?

Now that I have upgraded to Mountain Lion, when I wake my computer from sleep all of my Mail and Calender accounts are offline. This includes Gmail, AOL, and iCloud accounts. The connection doctor in Mail says that Mail can connect to the internet but puts red dots next to all of my accounts stating that connections to both the IMAP and SMTP servers could not be made. This issue has shown up only after upgrading to Mountain Lion, and the only way to resolve it seems to be to manually quit and relaunch Mail and Calender at which point everything goes back to normal until I sleep the computer again. Any ideas?

Further to my previous post... I think I may have stumbled uppon a solution.
Summary: When I fixed a problem with dictation, mail started working again.
Background: I noticed that after upgrading to 10.8.1 the dictation feature no longer worked. When I pressed [fn] twice the dictation bubble would appear, three dots in it would shake and then it beeped. No dictation. I searched for a solution, tried it out and dictation worked again. Then, this morning I opened up my Mac and mail sucessfully downloaded without having to restart mail.app!
Solution: This is a fix for dictation issues so don't blame me if it messes up your perfectly working dictation! However, it appears to have fixed my mail problems:
Locate and delete the file: ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.assistant.plist (Finder’s Go and press and hold Alt option). Then restart your Mac, turn off Dictation (Apple > System Preferences, click Dictation & Speech, and then click Dictation) and reboot your Mac a second time and try again.
    The original thread is here.
So, a random "solution" with beneficial side effects! Let me know it works for you.

  • "Allow this device to wake the computer" option resets

    Hello All,
I'm wondering if anyone has come across this.  Everytime I disable the Power Management option "Allow this device to wake the computer" click OK, the setting stays, once I reboot the computer, the option is enabled again.
I've checked the BIOS there's no setting for this, other than WOL - which is disabled anyway.
    Drivers has been updated
Windows patches are up to date.
Checked the registry to find any option, but I couldn't find any reference of PnPCapabilities
In case you're wondering, the reason I'm trying keep this option turned off is because a lot of my users' laptops turn on in the middle of the night to do windows updates when it is checked on.  When I check it off, they're fine.

    Hello Jacky ,
Do you mean that after rebooting the computer , the option ‘Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power’ is enabled?
And you are the only one user that affected?
If you are the only user that affected, please refer to the following article to fix the corrupted profile.
    http://windows.microsoft.com/en-au/windows/fix-corrupted-user-profile#1TC=windows-7
If you are not the only user that affected, please go to the manufacturer website and update the driver.
    Best regards,

  • Why does iChat launch every time I wake my computer?

Very annoying. Since upgrading to Lion, every time I wake my monitors, iChat starts up. It is not in login items and I can't find anything in the preferences that suggest it should behave this way. It feels like naggy shareware, but even that would have been something I intentionally installed. I've removed all of my accounts from iChat and still it wants to start up every time I wake the computer.
I thought I had the problem licked:
    http://bertrandaaron.wordpress.com/2011/12/05/stubborn-ichat-after-upgrading-to- os-x-lion/
But after my next reboot the iChat wizard wanted me to set up a new account. NO, THANKS. I just want it to stop launching in the first place. When I want to use iChat, I'll launch it manually.
    Any help appreciated.

    Hi,
My first thought would have been Login Items in your User Account (System Preferences > Accounts > your Account > Login Items).
    Next option
Open iChat if it is not open.
You should be able to open the iChat Menu > Preferences
    Go to the Accounts section.
Highlight the Bonjour account and see that it is NOT enable in the right hand pane  (If the account is Ticked (in the list) it is Active )
    Next place.
Lion does have this ability to remember if a window is Open on Shut down and will reopen it.
Check the System Preferences > General Section for the setting that does this under the number of Applications, Documents, and Servers that you can set to be remembered.
There is also a similar Setting in the Shut Down Message.
I would try turning both of these Off and cycling through a Shut Down and reboot sequence.
That should stop it launching on Computer Start up or Wake but it will not solve what is causing it.
Most likely it is a name that can be used in Mail or Face Time as well as iChat such as an Apple ID from MobileMe.
Also Check your Entry in the Address Book (My card = Head and SHoulders iCon) and make sure it does not list an name iChat can use.

  • 'Allow Bluetooth devices to wake this computer' always dimmed

I'm trying to use an external display with my 1.33ghz 12" G4 PB and use a BT mouse/keyboard.
I've been through this technote http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=300562 on "How to use your PowerBook G4 or MacBook Pro with the display closed and a Bluetooth keyboard or mouse" and this http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=86524 "What to do if "Allow Bluetooth devices to wake this computer" option is not available"
I've updated my BT software, updated firmware but still 'Allow Bluetooth devices to wake this computer' remains greyed out! Meaning everytime I close the lid on my PB when an external display is connected my computer goes to sleep.
    Please, anyone able to help?

You have not applied the Apple Bluetooth Firmware Updater. To use this option several steps are required in the following order:
Download the Apple Bluetooth Firmware Updater
    Install it
Launch it from Applications > Utilities > Bluetooth Updater
Apply it to your adapter (takes very long).
In most cases step 3 is missed. You have to start the already installed updater yourself (do not ask me why).
Additionally you might have broken your Apple Bluetooth Software. Apply the Mac OS X v10.4.5 combined updater which contains the latest version.

  • Color profile changes when I wake my computer up.

I'm using the first 15" unibody model, this problem doesn't happen every time I wake my computer up but only has happened when I wake it... The colors will look all off whites will be almost blue... then I open up display preferences and click on the "color" tab and the color goes back to normal... any ideas?

Actually I have the same problem. And I cannot predict when this would accure again. When this happens, I just go to preferences and it's fixing automatically.
I do not think the hardware has any problem, though
I think it is because of Leopard. Perhaps, there is a bug somewhere. By the way, I know that there is a problem with the latest iWeb, which makes images brighter upon publishing (maybe these problems are interconnected). Also, I experience brightening of Safari from time to time!
In menu I have only two color profiles, and I had problems only with one (The Native one which I cannot delete). Today I made another Native color profile. Will use it and see what's on.
Anyway, it would be great if an Apple specialist could tell his/her opinion on the issue.

  • Is it possible to set GRID Computing

This Question is not relevant to this forum but i want to get some information on GRID

Is it possible to deploy GRID computing on this environment

Grid computing is a style of dynamic or semi-dynamic CPU and application resource management.
Applications generally have to be written to conform to the Grid environment to be able to utilize it properly.
Oracle provides Grid-capable resources: the Grid-capable database is called 'Real Application Cluster' and the Grid-capable middle tier is called the 'Oracle Application Server' operating in a cluster mode.
Oracle also has somthing called the Oracle 'Grid Control'
The Grid Control is somewhat inappropriately named as it is neither a Grid, nor is it a Control - instead it is a monitoring tool that is designed to monitor Oracle's primary technologies (databases, app servers) as well as the servers and related disks. (In the case of the database, it can also do the admin, but for app servers, etc, it simply calls the appriopriate admin tool.)
SO ... you could deploy Grid Computing on your 20 standdalone servers, but it does require some thought. You could get some more information about ORacle's solution at http://www.oracle.com/technology/tech/grid/index.html
... and you could easily deploy Oracle's Grid Control to monitor, and help manage, you existing 20 servers. For that go to http://otn.oracle.com and look for "Enterprise Manager"

  • For the past 2 weeks when I wake my computer I get a white screen in front of my background

for the past two weeks when i wake my computer from the sleep mode, I have a white screen in front of my background and the hard drive spins like I have restarted my computer.

Could be any number of things. What user trobleshooting have you tried? Restart (power off/on) reset, hold the sleep/wake and home buttons together until you see the Apple logo and then release. See if it works after the phone restarts. Next is a restore from a backup (make sure you made a current one), then restore as a new device, which deletes all data from your device. If it doesn't work after all that, then make an appointment at the Genius Bar at the local Apple store, it is probably a hardware issue.
I have seen something similar which is generally diagnosed as a hardware issue.

Since upgrading to LionEvery time I wake the computer from sleep mode I have to wait several minutes until the computer connects to the Internet

I have found that Lion is slower to connect to WiFi when awakening than were previous Mac OS X versions.  However, the WiFi connection usually takes less than 15 seconds unless a Time Machine backup was interrupted when my computer was put to sleep.  When this happens and the computer awakens, the Time Machine backup attempts to continue prior to the WiFi connection having been made.  Until the Time Machine backup fails due to its inability to connect to my Time Capsule because of no WiFi connection, or I stop it manually, the WiFi connection will not occur.  So if Time Machine backups are on, you may be experiencing this bug which I have reported to Apple.
