Is it possible use an iMac 21,5" as secondary monitor for windows 7 laptop
Hello everybody,
Recently (less than one year ago) i bought an iMac 21,5".
Now i would like to use it as secondary monitor for my laptop. (My laptop runs Windows 7).
Is it possible? (I found conflicting opinions on the web, even on the Apple forum).
What type of cable do I need?
(I will appreciate also a link to the product on some online store: preferably apple store, but also amozon, ebay, etc.)
Thank you in advance.
SOrry to say, but no.
The 2011 iMacs can only be used as a second display via a Thunderbolt-to-Thunderbolt cable.
The other way around (from Thunderbolt-to-DisplayPort) would work.

Can I use my iMac (Flat Panel) as a monitor for my laptops?
Hi. I've got a MacBook, MacBook Pro, and a iMac Flat Panel. I'd like to use the Flat Panel as monitor for the two laptops (not simultaneously, of course.) Is this possible? If so, what's the best way to set it up?
Download and set up ScreenRecycler.

I would like to use my iMac 7,1 as a monitor for my Mac mini 2012. Is that possible and if yes, what type of cable connection do I need? Thank you.
No. Your iMac only has DVI video connection. You would need an iMac with Thunderbolt.

Is it possible to use as a monitor for a macbook pro an IMAC (early 2006)?
There's no direct input, but ScreenRecycler and Air Display both allow you to use any networked computer as additional display. I haven't tried either but perhaps one of them would work for you.

I currently have a late 2009 iMac, a 2012 MBP, a mid 2010 MBP and a MinDisplay Port (MDP) male to male cable. I am trying to either use the iMac a second monitor for one of the MBPs or mirror the display.
The iMac has a MDP port and is running OS X 10.7.5 (Lion)
The MBP 2010 has a MDP port and is running OS X 10.8.4 (Mountain Lion)
The MBP 2012 has a Thunderbolt port and is running OS X 10.9 (Maverics)
When I connect the 2010 MBP to the iMac with the MDP cable the screen of the iMac goes black and the MBP flashes blue. I have been looking for a solution and I have tried:
Rebooting them in the order of: connecting the cable, turing on the MBP, then turing on the iMac
Whilst they are on simply plugging the cable between the two
Connecting them with the cable while they are on, then pressing cmd-f1 on the MBP
Connecting them with the cable while they are on, then pressing cmd-f1 on the iMac
Pressing cmd-f2 on the iMac, whilst there are connected, only toggles a black screen on the iMac
Pressing cmd-f2 on the MBP doesn't do anything
Every time I connect the MBP 2012 to the iMac with the MDP cable, the MBP screen goes black and the computor screen becomes unresponsive but the screen stays on and I have to reboot the MBP.
I will really appreciate anyone who has any information on this topic.
ThanksIf the iMac is a 21-inch model, not without using a product such as ScreenRecycler over a network.
If the iMac is a 27-inch model, click here for information.

Using a iMac, early 2009 as a monitor for a new macbook pro?
Hi,
I bought a new macbook pro 17 inch, and I have an iMac 24-inch, Early 2009, how do I use the iMac as a monitor?
What cables should I buy?
Thank you
osmaneYou don't. Only the 27" iMac can be used as an external monitor, unless you install something like ScreenRecycler:
http://www.screenrecycler.com/ScreenRecycler.html
Note that performance of the iMac-as-external-monitor will be slow using ScreenRecycler. -
Can i use 21.5 mac as monitor for windows laptop
Would i be able to use the new 21.5" imac as monitor for HP elitebook 2560p? i have docking station for laptop. I went to the apple store and received nothing but confusing/contradictory information. Please help.
In the current lineup, only the 27" iMac supports a miniDisplayPort input.
There are other differences too - the video processor, CPU options, disk options. -
Can I use my iMac 2009 as an external monitor for a MacBook Pro
I will soon be getting a new MacBook Pro with Retina display. It has an HDMI port.
My current iMac 21.5" late 2009 model seems to have a port with what looks like a little monitor symbol, next to the firewire port. And the specs say:
Graphics and video support
NVIDIA GeForce 9400M graphics processor with 256MB of DDR3 SDRAM shared with main memory3
ATI Radeon HD 4670 graphics processor with 256MB of GDDR3 memory
Built-in iSight camera
Mini DisplayPort output port with support for DVI, VGA, and dual-link DVI (adapters sold separately).
Support for extended desktop and video mirroring modes
Simultaneously supports full native resolution on the built-in display and up to a 30-inch display (2560 by 1600 pixels) on an external display
Does this mean that port is just for video output to an external monitor? Or is is possible to also do video in?
On the one hand it feels like a waste to use a perfectly good iMac as a monitor. But the MacBook Pro actually has better specs, and so I was wondering if it is possible anyway.
Thanks,
dougThanks for your reply. After reading the article though, I'm still not really sure what the answer is. For example, you mention something that can be done, with some hurdles to go through, for 27" iMacs. Mine is a 21.5" iMac, but seems to have the same port you mentioned in the article. Or maybe it isn't. Anyway, I'm still not sure if it is possible after reading that. Interesting information though.

Can you use your iMac 27" as an external Monitor for a PC?
After doing a bunch of research I figured it's not possible to do on models later then 2010, BUT I came across a few motherboards (Asus Z87-DELUXE)
that have thunderbolt capability and obviously before I go out and spend $400 I'd like to know if it's 100% possible.
So, would it be possible to run a thunderbolt cable from a PC to an iMac to use it as a standalone monitor or would the iMac completely reject it purely based on the fact it's not a apple product?
Or could you just use the "Mini DisplayPort to DVI Adapter" to get it to work?Even though the PC motherboard might have Thunderbolt capability you need to research further to see if the Thunderbolt port on the board supports video out and is certified to work in Target Display Mode. To date I have not seen any that meet this criteria, another PC shortcoming. Also you may benefit by reading Apple's FAQ on Target Display Mode, at least book mark it.

Using new iMAC 27 inch as a monitor for Macbook Pro/Air
Can the new iMac 27 inch be used as a monitor? If so, while it's being used as a monitor connected to a macbook pro/air, will the iMac USB ports work and the camera for facetime? Planning on using the laptop in clamshell mode and stored away.
The new 27-inch iMac can be used as an external display for other Macs with Thunderbolt (Early 2011 and newer MacBooks Pro, and Mid 2011 and newer MacBooks Air). See > http://support.apple.com/kb/PH11302
As far as I know, you can't use the camera (I may be wrong), but you can use the USB ports only for the iMac, not for the MacBook Pro or MacBook Air. If you want both features, you have to buy the LED Cinema Display or the Thunderbolt Display -

Is it possible to use the iMac display as en external monitor?
I want to connect my powerbook up to an iMac using the display as an external monitor for the laptop. Is this even possible? Any feedback would be appreciated.
Hello,
I've seen this post at least a hundred times. Has
anyone actually had the gusto to try this idea?
I don't remember where the page was. But, I posted it's link several months ago in the forums during another discussion.
But, the guy who had done it to his iMac G3 had very poorly documented his conversion.
Basically, he took and wired signal to same signal on the monitor, and adapted his power supply and other items to work properly in the modified setup.
So, it is possible. You just need to sit down with the schematics and wire signal to same signal, and make sure you account for all the variables. It may take some resistors, etc. to get the adaptation just right.
I don't have any reason to do it myself, so I'm not going to tinker with it.
If I remembered the link, I'd post it. But, it wouldn't do much good anyway since his HTML formatting was severely messed-up. The end-result was accurate information that was scrambled around on the screen in such a way that you couldn't decipher it anyway. If he had done the HTML work properly, it would be in a formatted table. But, instead the information was scattered all over the screen in an illogical format. So, it wasn't of much real use. -
How to use the iMac last generation as a display for a PC
Hello,
Can someone confirm if it's possible to use an iMac last generation as a display for a PC (Windows) and if, yes, which type of cable or accessory is required?
Thanks
StephanieSorry, but you probably can't. The current and previous generation of iMac can only be used as displays with other Thunderbolt-equipped systems.
http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3924
Only if your PC has a Thunderbolt port that supports video out would this be possible, and such systems are currently rather rare.

Use iMac as secondary monitor for my PC(Windows)
Hi,
I have a PC running windows 7 and an iMac 27" i5 running OSX10.6.6.
I'd like to use my iMac as a secondary monitor for my PC (I still need some applications from my windows computer and I dont want to install windows on this beautiful mac).
Is that possible with the _Mini DisplayPort-to-DVI adapter_ on the apple store?
Sorry if it has been asked before, couldn't find it!
ThanksWelcome to the Apple Discussions!
No, that adapter will not help you accomplish your goal. It only works in one direction; mini-DisplayPort to DVI to allow you to attach a DVI video device to your iMac, such as a projector or display by the m-DP. You will need either a video card in the PC that provides DisplayPort output, then you can use a DisplayPort to mini-DisplayPort cable, or you will need a converter to switch your PC's DVI output to DisplayPort signal. Those converters run US$150 from 3rd party developers such as Atlona or Kanex and are then restricted to a a maximum 720p resolution.
