Is it possible? (WRT54GS)

I posted two time about the Kernel Panic before.
I exchanged it one time and I got the repair service two times.

Technician updated 10.4.8 to 10.4.9, but that still happened.
So he is checking other things.
Description:
•15/04/2007•5:06:57 PM•: Turned on Airport and downloaded two 300 MB files from Apple's website: no kernel panic.
•4/18/2007•11:31:44 AM•: Tested Airport some more, changing networks, and downloading files from all browsers found in Applications. Also tested the three new programs he added. Cannot reproduce kernel panic.
So... My asking is...
Does my router and airport(macbook) cause the kernel panic? Is it possible?
We have 2 computers at Home. 1 intel, 1 amd. They are connected via wire cable with Linksys router. Macbook is connected via wireless.
The router medel# is WRT54GS v2, Firmware ver. 4.71.1.

Please help me to solve this problem.

I have a similar type question I think. I have an older wired Linksys router (WRT150?). I have connected a WRT54G wireless router to that router so I have wireless capability. I would like to add a second WRT54G wireless router to provide additional coverage ( I guess it would act as a wireless access point). They would both be hard wired to the wired Linksys router. Is this possible? I know there is a range expander available, but they are more expensive than purchasing the WRT54G ($50 vs $90 for the range expander). Thanks Okii

  • Bridging between WRT54G v6 and WRT54G2 v1, possible?

I have been using a WRT54G v6 for quite some time now, and I recently purchased a WRT54G2 to use at my home theater system with my Tivo and HTPC.  I want to have my Tivo and HTPC hard wired to the WRT54G2, and have that linked wirelessly to my WRT54G, or the other way around if that will work.
Is it possible to set either of these devices to a "bridge" mode to allow this?  I have heard that it can be done with 3rd party firmware, but I don't want to go down that road if I can avoid it.
    Thanks

You can connect 2 routers to each other, For that you need to make some changes on your router in order to make them work.
Click here and follow the setps and once you are done with the settings you will be able to go online from both the routers.

  • Possible to extend a network of a WRT54G to my TC?

Since a macbook cannot be on 2 networks at once. i'm going to need to have my TC act as my backup and as my network. so the WRT54G is plugged into the modem and the modem is plugged into the wall blah blah blah.. i need to know if my TC can extend the network of the WRT54G so that i can connect to the TC and have internet + backup. if this is possible what settings should the airport utility and the time capsule be on??

Do you have a specific reason for keeping the WRT54G on the network? You can simply replace it with the Time Capsule and keep on going.
If you want to set up two different networks, one 802.11n and one 802.11b/g, you could also do this. I'd set the Time Capsule up in place of the WRT54G and configure it as n-only which will allow you to have faster dual-channel connections. Then, you can connect the WRT54G to one of the TC's LAN ports and allow it to continue to give you the 802.11b/g network.
You would have to set up the TC for DHCP and then disable DHCP on the WRT54G. It is a bit tricky to set up but can be done.
    Otherwise, just swap 'em out.

  • Is it possible to allow ICMP ping responce on the public interface for WRT54G?

Hi I need to remotely monitor a WRT45G from a remote host on the Internet. As such, I want to allow ICMP ping replies on the public Internet interface. However, I have found no feature to allow me to do this. Similar Netgear devices do allow this feature. I suspect the answer is, "you can't do that".

Yes this is possible. I just managed it on a WRT54GL.
On the routers default configuration page: 192.168.1.1 (or whatever you set it to) select the Security-tab, click sub-tab Firewall, uncheck the box next to "Block Anonymous Internet Requests", save settings. - I guess there's a risk involved, but it works.

  • WRT54G & FIOS Wireless Router Used Together - POSSIBLE???

Hello guys, I pretty much drew a picture of what I wanted to do so hopefully you guys will understand me much easier. Sorry, I am new here, so I like to introduce myself, I'm Mo. I'm pretty good with computer but learining more and more about networking. I just recently got FIOS in my house. It comes with a wireless router but problem w/ my basement is that I cannot get good connection on the 3rd floor. So my speed is really really slow.
I wanted to install the Linksys router to help that. Am I able to hook up my linksys router and use it as a "hotspot" for my 3rd floor? I get the connection from the Verizon router then goes into the 16 port switch I have installed, which sents wired connection to each rooms of the house. So I took my linksys router and plugged into one of those rooms and tried to get connection from the switch but didn't work.
Is there a way of doing this? Here's a picture I drew up. Thank you!

Yes, it should be possible to do what you have described.  However, we need more information.
Please connnect your computer, by ethernet cable, directly to your FIOS wireless router.  Verify that you have a properly working Internet connnection.  Then do the following:
Go to "Start" > All Programs > Accessories > Command Prompt.
A black DOS box will appear. Type in "ipconfig /all" (with no quotes), then hit the Enter key.   Post all the results.
Also please state the make and exact model number of your FIOS wireless router.

  • Possible Solution to Apples not Being Able to Connect to WRT54G After 1.01.0 Firmware Update

So like everyone else that has apples on their networks, ours did not work after the 1.01.0 firmware update.  However after a few hours and messing around, I finally got them to work with the router without having to downgrade to .9.
So far they still work thorugh a restart and a cold start, so I'm hoping that this fix will stick.
To get this to work you need to have another open wireless connection that you can connect to and get online with.
    Steps:
    1) First open up safari or whatever you use... (obviously doesn't load otherwise you wouldn't be reading this)
    2) Connect to the open wireless network, and then hit refresh... (it should load up the page this time)
    3) Go back up and reconnect to your router.... now try your internet again using your connection.  It *should* work fine...  and you shouldn't have to do it ever again...
    Good luck, hope this helps

HI  , just an addition to the above.....for MAC's go to system preferneces and then to network...choose you network card uner "connect using" and then under the TCP/IP tab select configure manually.....assign a static IP , subnet and gateway to the MAC along with the DNS entries....this static IP will work with the 1.01.0 firmware version .

  • WRT54GS Possible Problem staying connected

I'm not entirely sure if this is a router issue or an internet issue, but from time to time recently the internet, both directly connected and wireless, will die out only partially. Programs will still work like AIM or even World of Warcraft, but the internet won't be able to find a page as if the internet is down. Even when this happens even sometimes random pages will work. iGoogle homepage might not load after repeated attempts, but I can still get Google Search result pages through the Google Toolbar to load up and other random bookmarks. I've tried uplugging both the router and the modem and waiting 30 seconds that is typically recommended, and that usually ends up killing it entirely for the programs as well.
Is this actually an issue with the router or is my internet provider (BrightHouse Roadrunner internet) just having problems. If this turns up to be the case, I'll call them tomorrow, I just figured I'd try and see if it is the router first.

If you have no problems when connected directly to your modem, then it could be your router or your computers.

  • WRT54G Not Supported By LELA...help needed

Alright, roughly 2 days ago I hooked up this router (WRT54G) to the computer, and then later that day hooked up a laptop by wireless signal.  These first couple of days were fine, but last night while on my laptop searching the web, I began to lose a signal every few minutes for roughly 30-45 seconds.  After becoming annoyed, I went to check out my network by using LELA.  However, instead of the screen I expected (showing your network diagram), I was told that I was using a new router.
Obviously, I hadn't changed the router so I was confused and decided to update, which was the option it gave me and because cancelling out wasn't possible.  However, it didn't work.  After going through the setup, which was essentially just like the original setup for the router, I got to the last step and it said the LELA didn't support the router, as though I was using one from another computer or something.
My dad said he had installed an Internet Explorer update and it had prompt him to change settings, and he had, but nothing that he thought would affect it.  Also, I did a system restore to a point just shortly after it was originally installed, and at a time I knew it had been working, but alas that didn't work either.
I've searched on google and all over these forums for some help, but I've found nothing that gives me good answers.  I saw somewhere to roll back my firmware, but I don't know how, as it won't let me connect to the internet through the router, and if I unplug the router and bypass the router for my internet then I can access the web, but obviously not the router.  I'm stumped, and wondering if maybe all I need to do is a power cycle or roll back my firmware.  Please, answers would be helpful.  Thank you
EDIT:  Also, I'm not sure where to find what version I have or what firmware I have.  I just know my model number, and that I can get to my settings by typing in the IP of the router in IE address bar.  I had enough knowledge to get it going, but its been very frustrating in fixing the problems.

Oh, and a couple more things.  Why did a system restore not work, shouldn't this technical reset the system back to a time when it was working?  Or, does firmware not change?  I suppose, I'm kind of a newb to the whole router thing, and to be really honest, we just barely changed to high speed internet the day before I bought the router.  The high speed modem was professionally installed.  I know for a fact I had it hooked up right, I mean it didnt seem too confusing and plus it was working great for a short time.  Thanks.
EDIT:  You know, now that I've done so much searching for answers, I've found that lots of people are having this problem, but yet, I'm having a hard time finding answers.  So you would think Linksys might fix this problem in a firmware update, and yet the only valid solution I have found is to go back to the previous firmware.  Yet, I don't know how to do that, besides I'm at school right now, so yeah thank you for the help in advance.

  • How to hook up a Linksys WRT54G to Motorola NVG589. PLEASE HELP!

Hello,  I have recently switched over to AT&T Uverse and I am loving it. One thing I miss is having extra ethernet ports to plug in my desktop computer and my Xbox 360. When the Uverse technician came in, he installed a Motorola NVG589 modem that also has a built in wireless router. He also installed a VAP2500 as a receiver for 2 wireless TV boxes. The VAP2500 plugs into the back of the Motorola NVG589. 3 other TV boxes are plugged into the back as well.  My dilemma is the fact that all of the ports are being taken up. I need at least 2 more ethernet ports free so I can hook up my Xbox 360 (my model doesn't have built in wifi) and my desktop computer as well.  I told the technician this when he installed the system and he told me to go on ebay and buy 2 cheap splitters and split 2 TV boxes that are coming into the NVG589. I did so. It didn't work out. I called up AT&T and the guy over the phone said that was the worst thing I could've done. He told be I should buy an ethernet switch.  I had my Linksys WRT54G (Version 6) router laying around at the time and realized that it had a built in ethernet switch. I want to get this to also function as another Wifi hotspot because I have an old PowerMac G4 downstairs that won't connect to the NVG589 for some reason (it says connection timeout). I am guessing that the wifi card in the system may be too old to connect to the modern NVG589.  So, I need the 2 extra ethernet ports and another Wifi hotspot from this setup. I have tried multiple things to get this to work.  The closest way I could get it to work was when I plugged an ethernet cable from the LAN port on the WRT54G to port on the back of the NVG589. I then plugged the TV box ethernet cable I had to disconnect into the second LAN port on the WRT54G as well as plugging my Xbox 360 into the 3rd LAN port and my computer into the 4th LAN port. This worked great for the TV box and the Xbox 360. However, the computer's ethernet connection ran very slow and the WIfi from the WRT54G was very slow as well. The Wifi from the NVG589 was slow too.  I unhooked that setup and put it back to what it was beforehand.  Is there anyone that knows of a flawless way of setting this up?  Any articles someone can link me to? I've heard of bridging the NVG589...would that help me? How exactly would I do that? Please HELP. I have attached pics. On the back of the NVG589 - green ethernet is the DSL cable, both white ethernet cables along with the black one are TV boxes and the yellow ethernet cable is the VAP 2500.  Thanks!

This will perform a "factory" reset. When the Linksys is fully rebooted, log in to the Linksys. Do not configure the "Internet Connection Type" on the Linksys. Navigate to the "Wireless" section on the Linksys and configure the wireless. Do not use the same SSID (wireless network name) that the NVG589 uses. Save changes. Navigate to the "LAN" configuration on the Linksys and set the routers address to 192.168.1.1 and disable the DHCP Server. Save changes. This step will kick you out of the router. Power down your computer and the Linksys, run an Ethernet cable from a LAN port on the NVG589 to a LAN port on the Linksys, then power up the Linksys, and when it's fully rebooted, power up your computer. You should be good to go at this point. You will want to individually configure your wireless devices to use either the wireless network from the NVG or the wireless network from the Linksys. Otherwise they make keep jumping back and forth between the two, which will degrade performance for that device. You may still notice a slight to moderate performance drop for the wireless on both the NVG and the Linksys because they will be competing for the same wireless airspace along with the VAP2500.

  • Disconnection from internet behind WRT54G V2.2

I have two computers at home with both access to WRT54G V2.2 wirelessly.
Since the first day i set up the router, both of my computers get disconnected from the internet from time to time. It is very irritating. The two computers are still connected to the router but no data is exchanged with the ISP,for example, both the computers usually will get disconnected from the MSN one after the other. Then, try to connect tp the MSN but it wont be possible. Everytime, i need to do troubleshooting on MSN and the DNS and Wireless part always fail. I will have to click the repair button to make sure that both DNS and Wireless become normal before i can connect to the MSN,as well as websites. Usually,if i dont do the troubleshooting in MSN, i dont know how long i will have to wait before i can access to websites.
    What should i do ??

1, 6 & 11 are the channels that the wireless router are using to transmit signals. try to check which of those three works best for your computers. and if that wont work, lower the beacon to 75, frag to 2306 & rts 2307 for starters. and if still that wont work, i recomend a firmware upgrade. ^__^

  • Problem with WRT54G and DSL NAT router

I have a WRT54G connected to a Westell DSL NAT router. I would like to be able to allow incoming connections to my FreeBSD server.
The Westell router allows me to set IP Passthrough (they call it "Single Static IP"). This gives the WRT54G the outside IP address given to the DSL router. I can then set up the WRT54G for DDNS and port forwarding to forward specific ports I want to my server.
This works, for about 2-3 days. Then, I start to randomly lose outside connectivity. Web pages start coming up with missing elements, or taking a long time to load. This will eventually lead to total loss of outgoing communication.
Normally, I would blame this on the Westell NAT router, but as I'm losing connectivity to the internet, I'm also losing connectivity to the WRT54G. It will try to load configuration pages but will be slow with missing elements, etc.
All communications between computers on my inside network continue to function properly, it's just connectivity to the WRT54G and the internet that seem to start to fail.
Does anyone have any idea what is going on? I just upgraded the firmware on the WRT54G from 1.01.1 to 1.02.0, but I don't imagine this will help.
    Thanks,
    David Chamberlain

  • Connecting a wrt54g to an existing wireless network

    Hi,
I'm wondering if it's possible to create a second wireless network by connecting a wrt54g to our existing wireless network?
Our main router is upstairs, connection in the downstairs office is terrible, plus it's being used by a team that would like their own network anyways. Can I plug the wrt54g into the main router, assign it a static external IP and create a second wireless network?
    thanks

great thread toomanydoughnuts, thanks!  all the hours I spend googling for an answer are such a waste when I can post a specific question and a human being answers me back  :-)
I see that what I was trying to do is possible but before I start let me ask your opinion.
My initial goal for a seperate network was to give Router 2 a static external IP and connect our server to router 2 so external users would always be able to access it at the same address in case Router 1 ever had an IP change (I don't have constant access to router 1 and am not supposed to be fiddling with it!)
The secondary goal was to improve the wireless signal for those of us downstairs and I figure having Router 2 down there would provide a nice strong signal.
I have realized now that dyndns can solve my issue with Router 1's IP changing (even if it's once a month it's an issue for remote users accessing our server). Dyndns will re-point our host name to the new IP if it ever changes.
But I still have the issue of a very weak signal in the downstairs office.
Because I'm seeking the simplest, easiest to manage solution as I'm far from a network guru, do you think a better option may be to get a repeater or something like that for our downstairs office to just boost the signal from Router 1? If so, any recommendations?
thanks in advance for your time
Oh, and if I did go the route of setting up Router 2, could I give Router 2 a static external IP address?

  • Can't get WRT54GS v6 to work as access point

I know this may seem to be beaten to death, but I can't find the answer for my specific situation.
    Here is what I have:
Netgear DGND3700 v2 set in use as the router/dhcp/modem/wireless. It's wireless range is **bleep** (more like pathetic).
I ran a Cat5 through the attic to the other side of the house. All is good at this point. I can plug that wire into a single machine and it works.
I wanted to plug the WRT54GS v6 into that end and use it as a wireless AP with 3 switched ports left over.
Here comes the problem. No matter what I do, the WRT won't get DHCP from the 3700.
I have tried putting the WRT on it's own subnet, putting it on the same subnet as the 3700 but with it's own unique IP, setting it as router instead of gateway, configuring static routes in advanced routing, disabling all security, set the WAN config from factory default Auto DHCP to Static IP and entered in the 3700's IP info.
All of this has been to no avail. It won't connect to the 3700 and get DHCP. Computers connected to the WRT just get private IPs.
I would like to note that the WRT54GS does not have the entry in Setup>Basic Setup>Network Setup>Router IP where I can enter in the gateway IP. I have a WRT54G and a WRT55AG running on other networks in this same capacity and they have that entry field.
Does anyone know what I am doing wrong here, or am I wasting my time? I have a feeling that without a way to tell the WRT that the 3700 is the gateway, it will never work.

If you have tried already the proper cascading process from another router to this router (LAN-LAN) then it should have worked for you. This may be a router problem which is possible. The firmware should be able to fix it but since it is not then possible that the router is not working properly anymore. And no, you cannot use a wireless-G router’s firmware for this wireless-G router with speed booster.
Just to check, what you have done was:
    As an example:
    Router 1: 192.168.1.1
    Router 2: (WRT54GS) 192.168.1.2
    Set Advanced Routing to Router.
    Set the wireless settings.
    Disable DHCP.
Connect from an Ethernet port on the first router to Ethernet port on the WRT54GS router.

  • Can I use my WRT54G as a DHCP server only? I've got 5 dynamic IP's from Time Warner..

Hi everyone, I'm wondering if I can use my WRT54G as a DHCP server only only my network, without having to have any of my PC's plugged into it's router ports?  I looked at the settings but I couldn't get it to work.
Here's why:  I just got Time Warner Business Class cable internet which comes with 5 dynamic IP's.  I want each computer, well 4 of them at least and 1 for the WRT54G, to have a unique IP when accessing the internet, and the other computers (5 more computers) to use the DHCP server in the WRT54G to get a NAT IP for use on the internet.
We play Diablo II on the internet and only 4 computers can be connected through 1 IP, so that limits us in my current configuration.
Current Equipment: One WRT54G, one Netgear GS116 16 port gigabit non-managed switch.  One Time Warner Cable modem.  Also attached to the network is one HP network printer, a Buffalo LinkStation NAS and a Zensonic Network DVD player.
Current config:  Cable modem -->  WRT54G --> Netgear switch.
Ideal config: Cable modem -->  Netgear switch -->  WRT54G.
With my current config, I am not taking advantage of the 5 dynamic IP's, but all the computers connected to the Netgear switch or the WRT54G can connect to the internet and the NAS.
So my ideal config (where I don't have to buy anything and where all the computers can print and access the NAS) is to connect all the computers and devices to the Netgear Switch and somehow force 4 of the computers and the WRT54G to get a dynamic IP from the cable modem, while the other computers and devices use the DHCP server on the WRT54G to get to the internet.
    Is this possible?
I called Time Warner Cable and they weren't any help.  I called the Linksys sales department and they weren't of much help either.
I suppose that I could purchase a new 8 port switch and attach 4 computers, the cable modem and the WRT54G to it.  Then attach the Netgear to the WRT54G to accomodate the printer, NAS, and the other 5 computers.  But in that senario, the 4  computers connected to the new switch can't print and can't reach the NAS.  And geez, some computers would have to go through 3 devices to reach the internet, which has got to slow them down.
I did read about the Linksys EFG120 which has a DHCP server, but at $400 and only 120 gigs, it doesn't work for me.
I called Time Warner and the cost of more dynamic IP's is prohibitive, I'm already paying $79 a month for this internet and they want another $50 a month for 7 more dynamic IP's and that wouldn't help my NAS or my printer.
The cost of a 16 port gigabit switch with DHCP is an amazing $800 or so, which is out of the question.
Sorry for being so long winded and thanks for reading this far.  I'm looking forward to any replies.

That is a hell of a setup. I don't know if it would be easier and cheaper to either buy a real router like a Cisco, get fixed IP addresses and a RV042, or buy 4 network cards for the four of the five computers which need the internet access for gaming.
    O.K. First your setup:
    1. You wire the modem to the 6-port switch.
    2. You connect the remaining 5 ports with the WAN ports of 5 WRTs with DHCP on the WAN interface.
    3. You configure each WRT with unique LAN IP addresses in the same subnet, e.g. 192.168.1.1/255.255.255.0, 192.168.1.2, 192.168.1.3, 192.168.1.4, 192.168.1.5.
    4. You turn off all DHCP servers except on one, e.g. 192.168.1.1. That router will be the default router and internet connection for any client which gets dynamic LAN addresses (as fallback or guests, I would not configure the NAS or printer with DHCP addresses if you have everything else on static IP addresses). You can certainly disable all DHCP servers if you want, too.
    5. Now you connect all WRTs with each other.
5a. You connect port 1 of the 1st WRT with port 1 of the 2nd.
You connect port 2 of the 2nd with port 1 of the 3rd.
Port 2 of the 3rd with port 1 of the 4th.
Port 2 of the 4th with port 1 of the 5th.
(Do not create a loop connecting port 2 of the 5th with port 2 of the 1st!!)
5b. You buy another switch and connect each port 1 of each router with this switch. This has the advantage that you don't have a long cascade between the 1st and the 5th router like in 5a.
    6. You connect all devices to the LAN.
6a. If you did 5a, you will probably put each computer to the router which internet connection it uses. The NAS and printer could go anywhere.
6b. If you did 5b, you hopefully bought a 16 or 24 port switch. Then you plug simply everything into that switch. Otherwise you can certainly use the free ports of the WRTs like in 6a.
    7. You configure all your devices with static IP addresses. For instance,
    IP 192.168.1.11
    netmask 255.255.255.0
    gateway 192.168.1.1
For the DNS servers I would highly recommend to use the DNS servers of your ISP directly and not use the relay on 192.168.1.1.
The gateway address defines through which router the computer connects to the internet.
    8. You may still have to configure port forwardings on the router to the game computer if required for the game.
An interesting alternative to this setup might be to buy 4/5 network cards for the 4/5 computers with direct internet access. Then you use the one network card to connect to your single LAN behind your single WRT. The other network card goes into the switch behind the modem and has direct internet access. You then have to tell Windows which of the network cards has the default gateway for the internet connection (to prevent routing all traffic through the LAN and the WRT to the internet). One game computer would have to be behind the WRT.

  • Both WRT54G and WRT300N stop responding

At one of buildings at our church, we have had a WRT54G acting as an access point. For awhile it would require a reboot about twice a month due to lack of connectivity. About two weeks ago, it would barely function. Our staff could connect to it but connectivity would go down several times a day. After reboot it would work for an hour tops. I pulled out the WRT54G and replace with a WRT300N. The staff experienced the same problem. There are about 8 staff members that connect to the router for LAN and internet access. What could possibly cause the dramatic drop in performance? Given no network changes. When folks connect with wired Ethernet at their desks, they do not experiences any problems. There has been an iMac and an MacBook Pro added to the wireless network. Is it possible at wireless interface is sending spurious/chatty packets? How could I monitor this? An MAC address filter is used for security. No WAP or WPE password security.

try putting the following wireless settings on the router
    ssid  - any non-linksys name
    radio band - wide
    n-channel - 9
    standard channel - 11
also ensure that the router has the latest firmware on it ..
