Is it posssible to downgrade a journaled filesystem?

When I got my Drobo disk drive[1], little was published on setting it up for use with Airport Extreme. Since that time, the information has gotten better and I've found that I should not have formatted the drive "Mac OS Extended (Journaled)," but rather as "Mac OS Extended."
Since I've now got 700G of data on the drive, I can't move it all, reformat, and copy back. So, my question is: "Is there a way to downgrade the filesystem from '(Journaled)' to just plain 'Mac OS Extended?'"
Note [1]: Semi-RAID, four disk (max 1TB each) device made by Data Robotics, Inc.

I will try your suggestion and report back as to whether it is an "answer."
In response to your question, "where is your information coming from?", I'm not sure what you mean. Was I expected to footnote my question with corroborative references? Although I could easily do that (having spent 1.5 days researching the issue), anyone could Google-up pages of references. Suffice it to say that I had an otherwise well-behaved drive become corrupted after it had spent a couple of months "chumming it up" with an AirPort Extreme. Certainly my receipt of purchase from the fine folks at Alsoft (DiskWarrior) would lend credence to my observation of filesystem corruption.
If you are challenging my implication that the AirPort Extreme (AEX)-Journaled USB drive is the cause of the corruption, let me say this: I have found the AEX to be my most disappointing Apple purchase ever. I returned the original purchase for a replacement because the device seemed incapable of maintaining an uninterrupted connection with a MacBook Pro (MBP) that was positioned less than 20' from it and with nothing between them except one 3/8" thick wallboard and one 3/4" cedar paneling. The replacement model has been less unreliable, but less than 4% as reliable as a cheap WAP I'd purchased 5 years ago. The device simply drops out of the network when the activity is high. Sounds like a bug to me! Once it's dropped out, it starts a password challenge for which I lack a sufficiently high level of omniscience to overcome. I'm not sure what it thinks the password is, but it's not what I set. Resetting the device is the only remedy.
I believe that the AEX's "flakiness" is at the root of the corruption. If the wireless connection from my MBP to the AEX is analogous to the USB cable from my disk to the AEX, then one would not be surprised to hear that I'd had filesystem corruption from periodically yanking the USB cable out of my MBP while I was engaged in heavy filesystem activity. If the analogy is flawed, then the AEX is smarter than I thought. However, if the AEX is taking proxy responsibility for the USB cable, you would think you'd have more options in the "AirPort Disk" utility.
Perhaps journaling itself is meant to handle an unreliable connection to the mass storage device, but it wouldn't surprise me to learn that the QA folks didn't spend a month or two yanking the cable. Regardless, just what the AEX is telling the drive and/or Darwin when it gets "antisocial," who knows?
Thanks for your suggestion, though. I understand that you have "never heard of any negative effects of journaling an air disk," but the fact that you "don't have an Airport Extreme" may be partially responsible for your incredulity. I suggest you purchase one, add a drive, put 700G of information on it, and then sit in anxious worry over whether or not you're ever going to see that data again. The experience really opens one's eyes

  • OS X Lion requires a journaling filesystem on my macbook pro.

My Macbook Pro is stuck in Lion Limbo.
This is an upgrade.  It claims my filesystem isn't journaling -- Diskutility shows that it is, but I did enable it anyway with the button press.   The Lion installer still can't see it, or something else didn't work well.
I'm not sure where the installer downloaded to yet, in case I need to reboot this thing and restart the installation process.  But before I do that, I need to solve this problem.
What can I do to fix this?
    Thanks!

I solved the problem on my own.
The solution is to enable Journaling (find that button at the top).  Exit the installation program then re-start it.  It's located under /Applications as "Install OS X Lion.dmg" or something like that.
    Then, it works.

  • Overhead from multiple filesystem journals?

Using separate partitions for certain system directories is often considered good practice. However, I'm wondering if the write overhead from having multiple filesystem journals can cause noticeable performance reduction; especially if most of the partitions are on the same drive.
Is there any sort of general consensus on the performance impact of using multiple partitions with journaling filesystems?

I don't see anything wrong with your architecture. The devil is in the details of course, but it's a card game on OS/X, not an arcade game on the iPhone. If you use memory wisely I don't think you'll even come close to challenging the system.
There are lots of alternatives if you abandon Cocoa subviews and paint everything yourself. For example Windows Solitaire has a bit map for each card and uses graphics functions to move them around. Afaik it's all done in C, and it's certainly a lovely job, especially if you consider it was developed at least 16 or 17 years ago when there was a K where we now see a G in the memory and processor specs. But the whole point of Cocoa view classes is to provide a higher level abstraction so each card can be a subclass, etc. When you get your project working, see if it's any slower than Solitaire after factoring out the difference between platforms and let us know, ok?

  • Format NTFS External Hard Drive as MS-DOS or Mac OS X Journaled?

I recently bought a SimpleTech 1TB [re]drive (connected via USB). It came formatted in the Windows NT File System format. I would like to format the drive, but am unsure whether or not I should format it as MS-DOS (aka FAT32) or Mac OS X Journaled.
    _*Here is my situation:*_
I will have this external HD hooked up to my Mac at all times.
I want to be able to read/write files from the external HD over the network from my Windows computer.
I have had a Seagate external HD for a few years now. It has been formatted in the Mac OS X Journaled filesystem format, and I can read/write files on my Windows computer by accessing it over the network. Considering the Seagate is able to read/write files from both Mac and Windows, and is formatted as Mac OS X Journaled, does this mean that Mac OS X Journaled is best for me?
A potentially important thing to note is that my Seagate HD has been giving me trouble for quite some time now. Is this possibly due to the Mac OS X Journaled file system? Is it more recommended to have an MS-DOS/FAT32 file system if I will be accessing the external HD through the network on my Windows computer?
Additionally, I am unsure of how to format the drive. I know I am supposed to go to Disk Utility to do this. But am I supposed to go to the "Erase" tab or the "Partition" tab? And what steps do I take once in the proper tab?
*_So, in summary, here are my questions:_*
    1) Which file system is best for my situation?
    2) How do I go about formatting the file system type?
    Thanks in advance!

  • Frequent 'Filesystem Corrupt', Invalid File count

I have been getting this message every a couple of days in my MBP or iMac running 10.6.2. It happens/visible only when I runs Disk Utility and Verify Disk. Of course, this brings unsettling point to me when it comes now and then. Not to mention I have to boot from DVD to run disk utility to fix this
Error Message: Invalid file count (It should be xxxxx instead of xxx+1) AND
Error Message: Invalid volume directory count (It should be xxxxx instead of xxxx-1)
Any idea what causes this and what's the impact i.e. do I lose any files?
    Thanks!!

    Hi Tim,
By default, it is HFS+ Journaled (non-case sensitive). So I have also the same understanding that journalled filesystem should be robust as you wrote it. But the fact that this comes now and then, It created some doubts.
Is this a harmless error message or should I be worried about it. That basically my questions. I do repair when I see this.
It can't be because of disk is failing for a number of reason:
    1) I have the same behavior both in my iMac and MBP
    2) Both HDD has been replaced with new one recently
    3) Both HDD has passed through surface scan from TechTool Deluxe 5.0.6, so no bad blocks
    Still a puzzle...
Are you sure that the errors are showing up on both computers when performing either a "Verify Disk" or "Repair Disk" and NOT just a "Verify Disk Permissions" or "Repair Disk Permissions"? Permissions errors are mostly harmless. Filesystem errors (the sort you see when you ask for "Verify Disk" or "Repair Disk" in Disk Utility are not harmless and you should be worried about those.
If so, then either both drives are failing or your drives are being exposed to a strong enough magnetic field to damage their data (and that would have be pretty strong -- a common refrigerator magnet wouldn't do the trick.) In all of my years of working with journaled filesystems (or operating systems with "filesystem logging" which is the same thing) I have NEVER seen a journaled volume have filesystem errors unless it was physically failing.
Journaling will prevent filesystem errors if it's enabled for pretty much every cause except for a physically defective or damaged disk. Here's the short version of how journaling works...
Journaling (aka "filesystem logging") is intended to prevent filesystem corruption... and it's pretty rock-solid.
    1) A "journal" (or "log") area is added.
    2) A hard rule is established that, under no circumstances may the OS be performing writes to both the journal and the regular filesystem at the same time. One must be flushed before it can work on the other and vice versa.
    3) When a write operation is about to happen, the OS writes information to the journal indicating which blocks on the filesystem are about to be changed and what it's about to change. This information is flushed to disk.
    4) The OS can then perform the write on the actual filesystem areas it intended to change. These must then be flushed to disk.
    5) The journal can now be cleared.
That's pretty much it (simplified). But think about what this does. Normally if something interrupts a write operation (something crashes, a kernel panic, a power loss, etc.) there is something that will still have integrity because the OS will not write to both the journal and the regular filesystem at the same time.
If a failure occurs while writing to the filesystem it's no big deal. When the system boots back up, it notices the journal wasn't cleared so it "replays" the journal. This re-writes any blocks that might only have been partially written thus clearing any chance of corruption on the volume.
If a failure occurs while writing to the journal it's still no big deal. When the system boots back up it notices a corrupt journal, but that means the regular filesystem itself wasn't being touched so the filesystem is guaranteed to not have errors on it (although it does mean the last file you were about to save probably didn't get saved -- and that file wouldn't have written successfully even if journaling were off. At least this way there is no filesystem corruption.)
While it sounds pretty solid (and it is) there's still a potential for corruption, but it's rare. If a drive swings the access arms to a specific track and starts writing data, the assumption is that the write head is above the correct track. If the head is "sloppy" due to wear, then the head may be slightly mis-aligned and bleeding writes into the adjacent track. This will cause filesystem corruption even with journaling enabled.
If these drives came with the computers then the only warranty would be via Apple. If you purchased these drives on your own then they probably came with a pretty good manufacturer warranty -- most drives I've purchased in recent years had at least a 3 year warranty.

  • Not Starting Unnecessary Filesystem Processes

    Hi.
When I check for processes (using 'ps') I notice that I have a number of extraneous and unnecessary filesystem processes running:
       11 ?        00:00:00 jfsIO
       12 ?        00:00:00 jfsCommit
       13 ?        00:00:00 jfsSync
       14 ?        00:00:00 xfslogd/0
       15 ?        00:00:00 xfsdatad/0
       16 ?        00:00:00 xfsbufd
My system only uses the Reiser filesystem.  I have no references to these other journalling filesystems in fstab.
Note: I recall that I had the xfsprogs and jfsutils packages installed on the system when I originally installed Arch Linux, but I removed them during a general cleanup of unused software and data.
I know that support for these filesystems is compiled into this kernel.
What can I do to prevent these processes from being started in the first place?  Where are these processes being started in the first place (I see some things relating to loading filesystems in rc.sysinit, but can't see anything specific to these filesystems there)?
    Regards,
    Win

If I´m not wrong, those processes are started by the kernel itself, so some ways to get rid of them are:
    1) Add instructions in rc.local to kill them.
    2) Compile a custom kernel, without support for XFS and JFS  (maybe compiling xfs and jfs as modules could do the job)

  • Benchmarking Filesystems Part ||

    Hi,
Probably most of you here read Slashdot and probably everyone have already read this benchmark article. For those who didn't:
Benchmarking Filesystems Part II, by Justin Piszcz
It looks really suprising. It appears that ReiserV4, which all seem to be so fond of, isn't the best idea for low-CPU machines or laptops (where CPU usage=power). I wouldn't be really suprised if it's benchmarks wouldn't shine on fast machines either.
I'm currently running ReiserV3 (and, as pointed out in the benchmark, it's mounttimes suck), but after reading this article I think of moving FSs. Ext3 seems to have gotten a lot better since last benchmark - too bad dir_indexing wasn't benchmarked. I've never really checked out XFS or JFS, but judging from the article these look really promising. Anyone tried these?
    Thoughts/comments/overall discussion follows...

Here are my findings. Again, between hardware and users' needs, YMMV. My results for XFS, for example, probably won't apply to you if you have a fast SATA or SCSI drive, and you'll find ext3 grossly lacking if you're dealing with filesystems of petabyte size (e.g. systems that handle data from particle colliders).
    - JFS is fast, CPU efficient, and generally rocks. It's not quite as good with lots of small files as ReiserFS, but very close, and appears to have faster read speeds.
    - Indexed ext3 is very very very fast for just about everything... except pacman. It seems, for some reason, that the pacman "database" gets fragmented a bit faster on ext3 than on other filesystems. The slight sluggishness of pacman isn't a showstopper though, and pacman-optimize usually takes care of it for a while. Other than that, though, indexed ext3 is very good.
    - Non-indexed ext3 is very slow. My general recommendation is to never use ext3 without directory indexing.
    - ReiserFS is pretty good. There's supposedly a performance hit from tail packing, but I've never seen increased performance with tail packing turned off. I do have a major complaint about it though: journal replay on mount, which takes forever for large volumes.
    - XFS is incredibly slow, and causes a lot of hard drive grinding, especially when dealing with lots of small files - although for me, it doesn't perform well with large ones either. I've heard tell of ways to make it perform better with small files, but never found details on them, and I'm betting they're quite mythical; at any rate, I don't think it would make a difference, as this filesystem seems to disagree with my HDDs.
    - Ext2 (nonjournalled) should NEVER be used on hard drives. I learned this in a rather irritating way, when my ext2 boot partition became corrupted when I accidentally hit the power switch while my machine was still on, and a kernel panic message greeted me on the next boot. There's a good reason to use journalled filesystems, folks!

  • Journal commit I/O error

We installed R12 on linux release 4 update 7, It succesfully installed, after some time we got this error like.
Message from syslogd@localhost at Mon Jul
localhost kernel: journal commit I/O error
And when I tried to ls, I got this error:
    -bash: /bin/ls: Input/output error
How can i fix this problem.

    1. I assume your filesystem is ext3?
    2. look in /var/log/messages and post any relevant information in this thread
the journal is a small buffer in the filesystem in which metadata transactions to the filesystem are stored, in order to be able to replay these if the system crashes during these transactions. this also avoids the long lasting fsck runs which need to be done to non-journalling filesystems (ext2).
(interesting: most people I encounter think also data transactions are stored there. this is NOT the case by default. the ability to do so exists in the ext3 filesystem, not in most other journalling filesystems)
If this a non-root filesystem, the filesystem can be corrected by unmounting the filesystem, and fsck the unmounted filesystem.
The problem which is reported, is an I/O error. This means essentially the disk can be broken, or the RAID adapter can broken.
I've also witnessed this kind of errors with corrupted memory.
But please investigate the logfiles, and try to see if you can test the components involved (disk, disk adapter, RAM)

  • [SOLVED] syslinux 6.2-03 error "menu.c32: not a COM32R image"

This happens after yesterdays upgrade on a bios boot system. Booting without menu works properly, however.
Neither symlinking *.c32 nor copying them using
    cp /usr/lib/syslinux/bios/*.c32 /boot/syslinux/
did help so far. Even copying all of /usr/lib/syslinux/bios/ as adviced in https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php … 1#p1297101 works. Also a reinstall of syslinux did not change this behavior.
The /boot directory belongs to the standard / root partition in this setup so both methods should work.

Ok, just went through a lot of problems with recent update. Here's the problem:
I updates syslinux from 4.07-1 to 6.02-3 and got a broken boot menu kernel panic.
In 4.07-1 all syslinux modules are symlinked as follows:
    chain.c32 -> /usr/lib/syslinux/chain.c32
rest of the modules follow suit
In 6.02-3, however the symlinks look like:
    chain.c32 -> /usr/lib/syslinux/bios//chain.c32
And yes, the double slash IS there. I don't know if this is some magic that I'm unaware of.
Here's the relevant fragment of pacman.log.

I managed to downgrade the whole system, so it works now.
I tried to reproduce this on a virtual machine, but with no success.
Maybe someone can give me a little insight on this.
This is all, have a nice day.

  • [Xfce] Missing icons after upgrade

    Hello,
I'm experiencing problem with missing icons from xfce: clipboard manager, default web browser icon, folder icon, disc icon, local area network icon, zoom icons etc. I can't see them while using Oxygen style (which I want to use) but they appear in GNOME or HighContrast icon themes. I'm changing icon themes via Xfce's settings manager. I have 2 Oxygen positions there but it always was like that. In some applications the icons are just missing, but in some they appear as blank sheets of paper with red crossed circle.
    It worked before the update:

    [2013-10-11 22:43] [PACMAN] downgraded gnome-themes-standard (3.10.0-1 -> 3.8.4-1)
    Then I installed
    [2013-10-11 22:46] [PACMAN] Running 'pacman -S gnome-icon-theme gnome-icon-theme-extras gnome-icon-theme-symbolic'
Then I rebooted. Then I tried to change again icon themes within xfce's settings manager.
    None of this helped.

I'm running standalone Openbox and am also recently missing some icons. I haven't tried all the suggested solutions yet, but downgrading to gtk2-2.24.20-1 brought back most of the icons. More are missing with 2.24.21-2 and 2.24.22-1.
I wonder if this should be in Pacman & Package Upgrade Issues since it happens when upgrading and if there is enough information for a bug report.

  • Making a Windows 7 Installation USB Stick

This is a discussion of making a bootable Windows 7 Installation USB-stick Media. It might apply to making other USB connected "Disks" like Smartcards bootable too.
I recently had to do this (a Laptop with no build-in DVD drive and no USB DVD drive around). And it turned out to be surprisingly simple, using nothing but build in Windows tools from the Disk. I only found
this german langauge guide and nothing in english (but I might just have searched after the wrong terms, google has been wierd regarding langauge lately), so I thought I write it up (along with some problems I ran into).
Making a USB-Stick into a bootable Windows 7 (and propably Vista) Media is a 3 step process:
    1. Create a Active, Primary, FAT32 Partition of 4+ GB on the stick
    2. use bootsect.exe from Windows Disk to create the MBR and Partition Boot Record for that Partition
    3. Copy all files from the Disk to said Partition
    4. Test if it boots
    Detail analysis:
Step 1 is so simple I doubt it needs explanations. Create enough free space on the USB disk (at worst delete all previous Partitions). Make a Priamry Partition of 4+ GiB. Mark it as Active. Format it in FAT32. The Guide used Diskpart,
but this step can be done with any Partition Tool under any Windows, Linux, UNIX or DOS.
While the choice of FAT32 seems a bit outdated, theye propably did not gave the relevant bootlaoder the ability to read NTFS. Or maybe they just though FAT32 is enough for a media that is mostly read. I have not tried what happens if I format it in NTFS, but
    it might be possible.
Step 2 was the only tricky part. You need the programm "boot\bootsect.exe" from the Installation Media. It also must be run on a non-UEFI booted OS (otherwise it cancels out).
I had a Windows 8 on a new Laptop so I had a UEFI booted system. Luckily I also had a VMWare Windows 7 lying around. I just assigned the Windows 7 ISO image to the Windows 7 VM, then connected the USB drive to the host.
Once you have the USB stick in a a proper Windows mount the Parttion you created under 1 under any driveletter (should happen automatically under Windows), and open a console as Administrator (asumes DVD is drivletter is D: and the USB stick's partition
    ins Driveletter E:):
//Go into the boot directory on the Install DVD
    D:
    cd boot
//You should see a command promt like "D:\BOOT>"
    //Run bootsect.exe
    bootsect.exe /nt60 d:
Step 3 is to either copy the contents of the DVD media (copy and paste) or the Image (Mount into Virtual DVD Drive and copy/paste, unpack ISO images contents) into the partition.
How does this compare to other Distribution ways?
    To DVD:
There is no need for a DVD drive. Even if a bootable USB-DVD drive is avalible, the Stick or Card will only need only USB port (most USB drives need 2 Ports due the 1 Ampere energy need of the drives).
Flash Media has no seek times and much better throughput (the old weakpoint of any Disk and DVD/CD in particular)
A FAT32 partition is inherently writeable. So modifications to the "Installation media" like Implementing Service Packs and other Windwos Updates, Modifying ei.cfg/preactivation/setup answer files, implementing special Disk/RAID drivers into the Windows
PE or adding stuff that should be installed with Windows is easy (and do not requrie reburning a 4 GiB Image file).
Since it only needs a 4 GiB partition, on a big USB stick there would still be place for other Data Partitions
Since it relies on old techniques (Generic Bootloader + Active Primary Partition + partition boot loader), multiple Installation media on a big enough stick might be feasible (with a more advanced bootloader like GRUB). Have to test that part.
However, the cost/media is a lot higher then a DVD. So if you need multiple Medias it will propably be cheaper to use the old DVD approach.
Due to the needs of bootsec.exe, first creating the media can be more difficulty then just burning an image. But once it is bootable this programm is no longer needed.
    To PXE/network Distrubution:
If you have the nessesary setup already (DHCP/PXE Server, powerfull network), the USB stick is likely inferior. The USB stick should beat a 100 MBIT Network easily, but will propably be beaten by a 1 GBIT Network. Network isntallation uses existing infrastructure
(that you need for other reasons anyway) so the cost per media is even lower then the DVD.
The PXE way also has even better modifyability - sending out different answer files or even automatically booting different images based on the Compuers MAC adress are tried techniques.
If you lack the nessesary setup, the USB stick is a lot easier to implement and a lot easier to transport.
    Advanced things:
Need to check if the partition could be formated as NTFS. I prefer a Journalling Filesystem for my USB-sticks.
Need to check if using a advanced boot manager techniques (like Grub or modifciations to the BCD of the Windows PE) allows me to put multiple install media on one Stick (with one primary partition per "media"). Especially combining the x32/x86 and
x64 Windows Installation Media would be worthwhile. As would be inlcuding a Window 8 or Vista installation media.
Current Step 3 and 2 can propably be switched. I see no reason bootsect could not run from the USB stick as it runs from the DVD (it only accesses the MBR and
VBR of the Disk, areas not in use by Windows)
Steps 1 through 3 might be possible from the Windows PE environment. If so, only a computer with legacy BIOS boot would be nessesary (no actuall installation).
Windows 7 can be installed on a (U)EFI system, but I have not checked if I can use the boot from teh stick on such a Computer. Latest for Windows 8 Media UEFI compatibilty is nessesary.

I converted the stick to NTFS using the convert.exe and it continued booting. So chances are high they only choose FAT32 in the example because no feature of NTFS was per nessesary in a "almost only reading" scenario like installation media.
The second part depends on the BIOS. I have a more advanced one where I can choose legacy boot options (like USB stick) in the boot option menu even when the default setting is UEFI, as long as I don't need Secure boot (wich I do not).
Another question arose: Windows 7 has the Kernel/BCD level ability to boot from .VHD Files. The only thing preventing version below corporate from using this feature is a license check that is run just before the login (so way after the booting has been
    completed).
Starting with 3.0 Windows PE is based on the kernel of Windows 7. So the instlaltion system might have the ability to boot from .VHD too and might have no such check in place. If so, I could put both versions of the Windows 7 installer into .VHD, reducing the
need to have physical primary partitions for those.
Windows bootprocess vs. Linux boot process under BIOS:
The BIOS goes over all the boot media. If it finds one with a MBR, that one is executed and the BIOS part of the boot process is officially over.
-> Under Windows the MBR contains the "generic boot loader". A simple piece of code as old as BIOS (25 Years) that looks for the primary partition with "Active" Flag on "it's" disk. If it finds one, the Partition Boot Record of that parition is executed.
The MBR has done it's part
-> NTLDR (NT too 2000), this one reads the boot.ini file and gives/executeds apropirate options
-> BOOTMGR (Vista, 7), this one reads the BCD files
-> Since Windows 7 BOOTMGR can also chainload the Partition Boot Record that is inside a .VHD File
-> Wicher was used in Windows 3.X/95/98/ME
Higher versions can chainload lower versions, but must be designed for this and (re)installed in the proper "order".
The sometimes odd behavior that Windows 7 tries to keep 100 MiB in a seperate primary partition is there to have proper places for later additions to the BOOTMGR settings. Specifically it allows multiple BOOTMGR OS to use/edit the same BOOTMGR instace without
running into problems with "whose partition is active?" (since it is always the System Reserved one). It's not disimilar to having an extra /boot partition in Linux or how a GRUB's stage 2 works.
-> Under a typical Grub Legacy the MBR contains the Stage 1. It directly reads the Stage 2 from the proper partition/file system with a hardcoded path, but due to size limit of the MBR cannot do more. In some cases it starts a stage 1.5 wich has more
space to do work (63 sectors between MBR and first partition), but I never used this Setup
-> Stage 2 loads the Grub Configuration from the disk. From here it depends on what OS you want to boot.
-> For Linux or Unix the kernel is started directly.
-> Any Windows OS up to 7 can be booted using the chainloader command. For the OS this is identical to having the partition choosen by the Generic Bootloader.
While it can be chainloaded by the Generic Bootloader from the active primary partition, GRUB and thus Linux has no
requirement for any Primary Partitions. Stage 1 is designed to directly access the specific File System containng the Stage 2. In fact it does not even need to reside on the same disk (as the Generic Bootloader has to).
If one does not need the Active Flag to control the Generic Bootloader (because a proper Stage 1 is installed in MBR) it is adviseable to mark wichever Windows Partition is chainloaded as active (up to Vista at least I had very odd behavior if the Windows boot
partition was not marked active, down to randomly shredded Partition boot managers).
After running a Windows Setup usually the Stage 1 has to be restored, as Windwos Setup will always write it's Generic Bootloader in the MBR. In order to get "rid" of a Grub all one has to do is overwrite the MBR with the Generic Bootloader and set the active
    flag properly.

  • MacBook Pro running very slow over 1 hour to boot up

I was out of the country on a trip and my daughter's MBP (15" early 2011) refused to boot. It was stuck on the gray screen with the rotating gear. She made an appointment at the genius bar and they told her basically the computer was dead in the water due to a crashed hard drive and she should contact a data recovery service to recover her personal data then come back and they will install a new hgard drive and get her up and running. After I returned I removed the hard drive and took it to the IT department at my company. A tech there was able to access the drive via a USB/SATA cable and  copy the contents to an external hard drive. He ran HD Tune on the drive and found no errors. I re-nstalled the drive and it still had the same problem. I am more of a Windows guy myself so I'm not 100% confident of my Mac/OSX skills. Obviously the genius at the genius bar wasn't exactly right since as you will see if he simply tried a safe boot he would have been able to gain access to the computer. But following is what I have already done.
1). I was able to boot into safe boot mode(Shift key during boot process). Under Safe mode I was able to log in under a Guest account. I could not successfully log in under her user account. Under the Guest Account I ran Disk utility and verified and reset preferences as I read somewhere this could be an issue. It found many issues (I would guess around 100). I also ran the verify disk and disk repair (or wahatever it is called). Disk Utility informed my that I had to reboot into repair mode (Command & R) and run DIsk Utility in that mode.
2). Rebooted into Repair Mode (Command & R). It took a while for the spinning globe to get rid of the triangle with the exclamation point but eventually I was in the Internet Repair Feature (Or whatever it is called). I ran Disk Utility and did a repair. It found system file errors and reported back that they were repaired. Wihile in Repair mode I looked under the "restore" tab and noticed that OSX Lion was shown. But in the computer's "About this Mac" it shows OSX 10.9. My daughter confirmed that she had previously updated the OS twice via the App Store so I guess that is why Lion shows under the restore tab.
3). I did a reboot to reset PRAM/NVRAM hoping that would assist as well as I had seen some entries that this was a good thing to do with very slow response problems.
4). I rebooted and waited. After about 20 minutes the log in screen came up and I log in under her user account. About 30 minutes later most of the desktop had loaded. About an hour and a half into the boot I was able to navigate the desktop but the was at least a 2 second delay between clicking on something and it acting. Often I had the spinning "rainbow wheel", "beach ball", "umbrella" or whatever your preference is.
So bottom line is I am no longer stuck on the gray screen but the computer is totally unusable. I'm not sure what my next step should be. SHould I restore the OS to Lion via the Command & R procedure? If I do that then will she be able to reload 10.9 Mavericks again via download?
If she has a friend with a MBP already running Mavericks can she make a USB boot drive on that machine to repair/replace her existing OSX installation?
Should I just reformat the hard drive and start fresh since something isn't making the MBR happy?
Also under disk utility the SMART report shows the drive as healthy.
Here are the basic specs of the machine as is:
    OSX 10.9 (13A603)
    8GB Ram 1333 NHz DDR3
    Hard Drive: 499Gb total/263GB available
    Any advice is welcome. Thanks.

    LPBassman,
since the tech in your IT department was able to copy your daughter’s data from her MacBook Pro’s internal disk, I’d suggest completely erasing the internal disk (using Disk Utility in Recovery mode, reformatting it with a “Mac OS Extended (Journaled)” filesystem), reïnstalling its original version of Mac OS X (either Snow Leopard from the grey Mac OS X Install DVD if it originally came with two grey DVDs, or Lion via OS X Internet Recovery if no grey DVDs originally came with it), running Software Update to get it to 10.6.8 or 10.7.5 respectively, reïnstalling Mavericks, running Software Update again to get it up to date, and finally restoring your daughter’s data.

  • My Macbook Pro runs VERY slow when unplugged. The battery charges and runs ok. Ran an SMC reset (no success), Safe mode (did not work), and hardware check (came back ok). What can I try next to fix this?

    Hello all,
I am new to posting on this forum but I really hope that someone out there can help me out. I have a 13" MacBook Pro, 2.53 GHz Core 2 Duo, 4GB 1067 MHz DDR3, running OSX 10.6.8. My problem is that when I unplug the laptop form the charger and run it on the battery, the computer becomes unresponsive to any commands at all. It basically really slows down to a crawl. Even when rebooting it will take 5-10 minutes or more to do so. The odd thing is, when it gets plugged back in while any of this is going on, within a minute or two it works perfectly. It has been in a mac authorized repair shop for 7 weeks and has had a new logic board and a new hard drive replaced. The battery was tested and charges fine, holds a charge when unplugged, and the system profile shows the battery at Normal. Recently, many knowledgeable mac enthusiasts gave me tip that might help. Here is what I did: Ran an SMC reboot (no success), rebooted the computer under safe mode then unplugged it to test (no success), and ran a hardware test on the install disk (showed hardware ok)
I am at a loss as to what to do next. It has become impossible to use this laptop for my classes when it is unplugged. I am about ready to just go buy a new one, and call this one a goner.
I am hoping someone reading this can help with any other ideas on its problem. Help? Anyone?
    Steve

  • Having Issues with High CPU Usage with fluxbox & pekwm

    Greetings,
I have searched for this issue and it seems that something similar has happened in the past with an old xorg, and it seems that someone is having a similar issue that they can point to kde as being the culrpit. However in my case, this is a fresh install and is not using any kde libs. Please allow me to explain the issue.
The power supply on my main computer finally gave out, and being incredibly poor at the moment I can not yet replace it. So, I pull out an older computer that I had once set up for my kids, but took it away from them when they were abusing it. I always make backup dvds and such monthly so I didn't have to worry about any lose of data, however I desired to keep my larger hard drives from my main computer. After testing to ensure that the hard drives were fine, I did some minor surgery, and did a fresh install of arch linux onto my back up computer. Since I prefer pekwm, I installed pekwm as my wm of choice, and outfitted it quickly with mpd+sonata, firefox, pcmanfm, and tint2. Then I rebooted into my pekwm 'desktop'.
It was running sluggish. Firefox was easily maxing the cpu up and beyond 100% and it felt ten times worse than any heavy DE I used in the past. I checked to make sure I had the right video driver installed. As this computer runs a 64MB nVidia GeForce2 MX with TV out video card, I searched nvidia's page and the arch wiki, noting that the driver needed is nvidia-96xx. Well I had already suspected that during install, and thus had installed such driver. I double checked my xorg.config and it has the right driver listed.
So I checked out some lighter browsers. I tried both Midori and Iron (which is similar to Chrome but without google spyware or whatever). Well both run better than firefox, Midori being the lightest one, but Iron quickly being my favorite. Still, the problem remained. Moving windows caused cpu spikes, opening more than one tab, or more than one program caused cpu spikes and the computer to slow down and sputter, freezing at times.
So I tried out another wm, fluxbos, which is another of my favorites. Seemed somewhat better but only fractionally, which I consider odd because pekwm has always seemed snappier than fluxbox to me in the past. Running lxtask (still mouse dependent, sorry lol), I was able to take note of the following...
    FLUXBOX
    lxtask 6% CPU usage average
    PCManFM 5% CPU Average
Fluxbox 1% to 2% cpu usage
    gksu 3% cpu usage
pidgin 3% to 7% cpu usage
firefox up to 62% cpu usage
midori up to 38% cpu usage
iron up to 50% cpu usage
    mpd 11% cpu uage
Xorg (with no window movement) 2% cpu usage
Xorg (moving windows around) up to 80% cpu usage
    PEKWM
    lxtask 6% CPU
    pidgin 7% cpu
    tint2 1% cpu
    pekwm 1% to 5% cpu
    pcmanfm 7% cpu
    firefox up to 85% cpu
    python 1% cpu
    midori up to 38% cpu
iron up to 25% cpu (odd...)
Xorg (with no window movement) 1% cpu
Xorg (when moving windows around) up to 80% cpu
Both were using around 118 MB RAm and weren't yet touching swap. As I see it I am  thinking xorg  or video driver related, yet I already made sure that I had the correct video driver. Here's my Xorg.conf

So what I am wanting help with is finding the solution to the cpu usage so that I can use this computer at least until I can afford a new power supply or whatever. I am open to any good suggestions, though I must state I am not really interested in tiling wm's at the moment. I am just not a true minimalist.
Thanks in advance for any and all help. I understand that there is a lot of info in this post, but it is my hope that with this info the problem can be solved. If there is info I didn't provide that is needed, please let me know.

    also check that you have
    session.screen0.opaqueMove false
in your .fluxbox/init  this will probably help a bit if it is currently true,

If I have to format an external hard drive to make it Mac compatible, will it delete all the content in the external hard drive?

As others have said, the answer to your question is a big YES.  Formatting a drive will delete everything!
To keep your data, yet reformat the drive for optimal Mac compatibility, you will need to:
    1) copy your files to a different hard drive (I would recommend two different locations if you value your data)
    2) repartition/format the external drive
    3) then copy the files back to the external.
You haven't given details but if you need the external to ONLY be compatible with the Mac (and no longer care if if can be read by Windows), then you will want to partition the drive using the GUID partition scheme, and format as the (HFS+) "Mac OS Extended (Journaled)" filesystem.  You can do so using the built-in "Disk Utility" application on your Mac (in the Applications/Utilities directory).  Here are instructions:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ph5845
If you need the drive to be compatible with both Mac and Windows computers then please post that so someone can recommend a solution for your specific needs.
