Is it recommended to get a separate audio card?

Was wondering since i'm putting together a workstation based on relatively high-end parts like the i7-3930k and gtx 680, should i not skimp on the audio and just buy a dedicated sound card?  i'm using an Asus p9x79 pro, and im sure the onboard audio is fine, but would it boost performance to get a dedicated sound card?  if so, which would work good with video editing work? any recommendations?

If the on-board sound meets your needs, then it is best to stick with it.
See the following very recent thread for some additional details regarding some high-end options:

  • Should I add separate audio card to use with Audition & Premiere

Should I add a separate audio card? I am using a production premium and for now I using the on board sound card which is a 5.1 Realtek.  First I am no pro but do like editing events etc. Is there advantage dis-advantage?  Also will be using Audition.   If it is better to get audio card which one?

Many on-board audio chips are very good, so long as their driver support is also very good. If not, then ASIO4All is often a viable option.
Separate audio cards, and devices might offer advantages to some users, but all are not trouble-free. I would test extensively your Realtek chip, and see how things go. If you have any issues (PrPro and Audition), then consider and test the free ASIO4All driver. If you are still coming up short, then perhaps something from M-Audio, or similar, would be a good investment - but only if your Realtek chip does not do the job for you.
Just my observations from my personal experiences.
    Good luck,

  • Audio Card and/or Interface Suggestions

    Hi all,
I have been running a Digi 001 on a G4 dual 1.25ghz and logic 7.1.1 for a while now. I recently made the leap to tiger and Logic 7.2 and have had a mountain of headaches. I'm thinking it might be time for me to get a new audio card and/or interface to use with Tiger and Logic Pro 7.2 and beyond. I want to see what you all recommend. I have a couple buddies that love their Motu gear, the 896HD and Traveler. I've also seen some negative feedback in posts here that say the Motu sound is a bit tough to deal with (brittle, more on the high frequecy end etc...) I like what I've read on Apogee, but the price may be a bit steep to get the wife on board. ;^)
I have an Alesis HD24 that I do most of my live tracking to. I then take the files into Logic for mixing, virtual instruments, etc. So, could I get by with just a solid audio card for mixing? I do at times, like to just drop an overdub or quick idea straight into Logic and not go through the steps needed to use the HD24, in this case an interface would be necessary.
Any guidance here would be soooo greatly appreciated. I'm sick of spending my creative time sorting out IT issues with my rig...primarily with my 001. Help a recording musician become a recording musician again.
    THANKS in advance!!
    Andrew

Gonna resolve this one as I won a Motu 2408 on ebay over the weekend.
    Cheers.

  • How do you export separate audio tracks for Pro Tools?

I need to give separate audio tracks to my sound mixer but am confused on how to do so in FCP X.
    So far I've:
Set the dialogue roles and stems for each character
Then I went into Master File>Settings
    Selected:
    "Format: Audio Only"
    "Audio File Format: Wav File"
"Roles as: Audio only as separate files"
    "Dialogue"
    Sara
    "Stereo"
And when I export and listen back to the wav file, there is either no audio or I hear select dialogue.
The only thing I can think of that I am doing wrong, is that each characters dialogue is not on the same track like the picture below. The tracks highlighted is of one character's dialogue that I am trying to export onto one linear track to export into Pro Tools.
Can tracks be assigned in FCP X? Or is there a crucial step that I am forgetting tthat explains why the audio for each character is not being exported.
    Thanks!

If you're dumping audio for ProTools, you should be able to export XML for use in PT. Haven't done it myself, but the option's been there for a while now. You should be able to find instructions easily.
If you want to stick with making Roles work, I suggest making sure the roles are assigned properly to each clip. Kind of a super pain in the neck, to go one by one, but ... that's the way. There are key commands for the three default roles, but if you've created custom ones then it's more time consuming. Is that 'Sara' one a custom Role that you've created?
My only thought is you have compound audio clips there. Maybe go in and set the roles on the individual files inside the compound clips. Dunno...
The visual organization shouldn't matter (one track above another). That's the X way.
((In your picture, you say you have some files selected. When I select, I get a yellow border; yours are light green and dark green. What is that?))

  • No visual of separate audio tracks

In the beginning, iMovie opens. I see picture and hear audio from the imported footage.
The audio exists in the video track. Then, I drag audio from GarageBand to the separate audio tracks. But wait!
In timeline view I don't see the visible presentation of the audio tracks. It is blank.
However, I can hear the audio that I have just dragged to the invisible audio tracks. I 'undo' the audio drag, and there is no audio to be heard on the separate tracks (so, I know I have some control over the audio).
But, there are no distinguishable tracks.
    The area is blank.
The audio tracks are audible, and not visible.
It's as if the programmer forgot to put in the thing that tells the machine to show the tracks.
    What's up doc?
P.S. Maybe we should get things right before we move onto other things.

    Hi Wayne:
Try deleting the imovie preference file. Locate a file named com.apple.imovie.plist and get rid of it. Then empty the trash, run a permissions repair with disk utility and restart. That should do it. The files you need to delete are found in:
    /Users/YourName/Library/Preferences/com.apple.imovie.plist
Then try this list (compliments of P.T.Patrick):
*Run MacJanitor (free download) to do all the Unix Cron Maintenance scripts.
*Run Disk Utility (Applications -> Utilities) and repair disk permissions on your start up drive (typically your internal drive). Also verify any other drives mounted on the system.
*Run Preferential Treatment (free download) to check for corrupt/damaged application and system preference files.
*Run Cache Out X (free download) to clear all system and application caches.
    *Reboot your Mac.

  • Import 2 separate audio tracks

If I import into FCP off of a camera that recorded two separate audio tracks, why aren't they separate?
On Ch2 I used the nat sound mic and I used a separate mic on Ch1 to record interviews. They were definately different when I was listening on my headphones, but now both Mono tracks, 1 & 2, are the same. The nat sound is way too loud.
    Any advice?

It's pretty simple. IF you captured as channel 1 and channel 2 audio (not stereo) FCP set them up as mono tracks that are both panned to the center in the stereo field. To get a more discrete listening experience, pan one to the left and the other to the right.
Unless you are an audio whiz, it does not make sense to use both of those tracks in your final mix, because you risk phasing problems, where one track tends to cancel out parts of the other.

  • Separate audio channel in avi

I am required to export a video with 4 separate audio tracks, and edit file to tape, I am using media encoder express from black magic... it doesnt support much formats....
The only way till now I can get out a video file containg 4 different separate audio channel is using mxf which can not be imported to media express... I can import avi files.... can I get avi video filel with 4 separate audio channels? any help please?

    Hi
How do You record ? With what Camera ?
    • 2 Stereo tracks - one with background one with voice ?
    • 2 x 2 Stereo -
    • 5:1 audio
    • 7:1 audio
iMovie can use ONE Stereo Audio track.
To get audio OK I use
    • Audacity (free from Internet) or
    • GarageBand - where I can also do Audio works
BTW - to get full freedom - Use FinalCut Pro

  • Is it possible to separate audio tracks and/or timecode on clips in browser

I transcoded my AF100 clips with log and transfer and came out with all my audio in stereo tracks. There are two separate tracks corresponding to the two mics but they are linked. I know I can separate them one by one on my timeline, but I'm wondering if there's away to select all the clips and do the same thing in my browser, since I have to do the same thing to ALL my hundreds of clips.
Similarly, I made audio tracks without timecode for my transcribers. Now I have to go in and set an auxiliary timecode starting at 00 for all my clips. I'm wondering if there's a way to do that for all the clips at once. I wish I had set the camera to start the timecode at 00 for each clip, but I didn't think of that in time.
Thanks in advance for any help. This forum saves my life!

I don't know much about your business except what you've said but my first impression is that you are way over-thinking and over-producing; your situation is unnecessarily complicated.
I am finishing to DVD. I tried before production to figure out the best way to get these clips to my transcribers ASAP- the start to finish on this project is very short, and it was taking too long to compress clips stamped with TC and the Pro Res clips I am making via Log and Trasfer are huge and don't play well on every computer (all of my trasncribers are on PCs) Also, they are all in a country other than the one I was producing in, so getting them Pro-Res clips would have meant mailing lots of drives internationally. The easiest way to get the transcribers the clips turned out to be using Drop Box to send them audio clips. If you still think I'm over producing, do tell- I'm def not one who enjoys over-anything and if there is a more minimalist approach I'd love to know!
You can, of course, create actions or macros, if you understand the programming, to run batch processing but only if all of the files can be processed in the same way.
So, is there any way to set auxiliary timecodes OR to separate audio tracks on every single clip in my browser?
And is there a way to get Log and Transfer to create clips that don't have the audio in stereo?
    Thanks

  • How do I combine separate audio and video files into one Quicktime movie?

I have DVDs that contain separate audio and video files in folders marked Audio_TS and Video_TS. I would like to know how to combine these files into a single Quicktime movie. Is there inexpensive or shareware software that imports and unites these files reliably? A simple solution is preferred, rather than getting into complex media editing applications.
    G4 eMac   Mac OS X (10.4.9)

Doug - the VOB files (in the VIDEO_TS folder) are MPEG-2 files. MPEG-2 have the video and audio mixed into the one file - there are no audio files to combine.
The rest are directions to a DVD player (e.g. the BUP and IFO's) . The AUDIO_TS folder is used for DVD Audio discs and on video DVDs is always empty.
Many people use Handbrake or iSquint to convert VOB to iPod video though MPEG Streamclip is the best - open the first numbered VOB and it will prompt you to open all of them. ALWAYS fix timecodes when it asks. You can then edit/trim and export to MPEG-4.

Having problems connecting iMac(late 2006) running 10.7.5 to a Samsung Flat Screen TV using separate audio/speaker cable and HDMI standard cable, mini-DVI to HDMI video converter.  TV displays generic Apple galaxy background and "some" windows (e.g. screen resolution choices).   It does not show Mail or Safari menus.  System preferences'  display "gathered" the Samsung and chose its resolution.  I did not find a way to select the Samsung as my display.
In addition to having old hardware, we have Verizon FIOS providing internet and TV access.  Is there any way to make this work for us?  We would like to stream video (Netflix) and view shows from the Web.  Do we need Apple TV to do this?  Or is it not possible with our old iMac?  My husband thinks that our Airport could be a factor.
    Thank you

Lately, I have been seeing a lot of posts with users trying to use their Macs/iMacs to mirror their streaming video from their Macs to an HDTV.
There are, actually, many alternatives to choose from than just from a Mac.
You need to have or invest in a WiFi capable router for all of these examples.
Apple TV only integrates with WiFi and newer Mac hardware. So, if you want to have total integrated experience, if you have a 2011 Mac or newer, you might as well pay the $100 for the AppleTV box.
If you have a older Mac, like I have noticed many users do, then you have other options.
If you want to elimate long cable clutter and having your Mac at the mercy of your TV all of the time,  you can still use the AppleTV box independently or purchase cheaper alternative media streaming boxes from Roku, Sony, Boxee or any number of electronics manufacturers that now have media streaming boxes and media streaming capability built into DVD/Blu-ray players.
These eliminate long cable clutter by being close to the HDTV where shorter, less expensive cables can be used.
Another alternative for iPad users is to use an iPad with the USB/HDMI video adapter and use your iPad as the streaming box. This ties up your iPad in much the same way as it does with your Mac, but again the iPad can be close to the TV and use minimal cables to the TV.
Another alternative to is to use a combination of an iPad and your Mac to stream content that is only available to stream online from a computer. In this case, you can use a desktop remote app on your iPad and Mac. A good and cheap Desktop Remote app is Splashtop Remote. This allows you to completely connect your iPad remotely, over Wifi, to your iMac desktop. The app streams both video and sound to the iPad which is still connected to your HDTV. The resultant stream video picture will be smaller than the size of your HDTV, but it will still be plenty large enough to watch. Again, if you own a iPad and an Intel Mac, this method also allows minimal cabling to the TV.

  • How can I get netflix streaming audio, the video is fine but the audio coming through is from the TV(dish)

how can I get netflix streaming audio, the video is fine but the audio coming through is from the TV(dish)

It's exactly as I stated. Whenever I try to drag these kinds of loops (ESX24 / software instrument loops? the ones marked in green with the white music note next to them) from the loop browser into the timeline a message comes up saying Audio Not Found for that loop.  And a new track is created automatically when loops are dragged into the timeline, so I'm not creating some other random / synth instrument track so I'm not sure  what the deal is... But perhaps I'll try creating a software instrument track first and then drag the loop into that track and see what happens - maybe there's something with the default settings that automatically creates audio tracks whenever loops are imported?

  • How do I get Video and Audio Chats with PCs ?:  FAQ 3

How do I get Video and Audio Chats with PCs ? (Updated 24/11/05) iChat FAQ 3
Applies to iChat 3.x and iChat 2.x
This piece is designed for those trying to connect Mac to PC for Video and Audio chats. Any iChat version Panther and up.
    Glossary For This FAQ
This bit is designed for clarity.
Video is the sending and /or recieving of pictures and sound.
Audio is the sending and or receiving of sound only.
One-Way is the ablity to start either an Audio or Video chat from one end to a receipient who can not match your capabilities (or Vice Versa)
    What is needed
    At the Mac end
1 Mac running OS 10.3.x and iChat AV ver 2.1 or 10.4 plus iChat 3
A DSL (Broadband) connection of at least an up link speed of 256kbs.
An AIM or .Mac.com account name.
(hosting Multiple person AV chats requires higher specs and broadband uplink speed).
    At the PC end
1 PC running windows XP (home or Pro). THIS A MUST
The AIM Standalone Application, currently at ver. 5.9 at this link.
Note: there is also Trillian Which has a Pro version for $25 that can also Video and Audio chat. The Basic just Texts and Audio Chats (AIM does not Audio chat)
Some need the file from item 2 Here
Note: It has been noted that this file is now just another link to the Standalone application. This might be an error by AIM or a newer version that includes the file.
An AIM account/screen name (AOL or Nescape count as well)
Service Pack 2 info. This info will allow the PC user to enable AIM thorough the XP Firewall.
    Between both of you.
At least one camera (Mac end)
A sound input device (the camera, if it has one is ok)
Your Buddies screen/account name in each others Buddy Lists
    Other tweaks
For some people, using AIM on a PC, may also have to make sure their preferences (properties) are set in the AIM Buddy list, for their camera and /or Mic. (Tuning)
This is an icon button lower right on the Buddy List marked "Prefs" (AIM 5.5). This leads to the Preferences. Drop down the list until you read Live Video. Click on this. In the new window that opens click the button that says Tuning Video and Audio. Follow the instructions in the wizard that opens up. Access in AIM 5.9 for this is in the My AIM menu at the top of the Buddy list and then, Options
    To Start
You should now be able to chat to each other.
If each of you has a camera it can be full Video , as described in the Glossary at the top.
To start from the Mac end, select (highlight) your Buddy with one click. His camera icon should be dark. Click on the icon near his name or the one at the bottom of the Buddy List. (You do not have to start a text chat).
To start from the PC end you need to start a text chat, then select the Video icon at the bottom of the chat window.
If one of you has a camera and the other has a Mic then you will be able to chat One Way but have sound returned to you.
To start this type of chat from the Mac end you will have to go to the menu item "Buddies" and drop down to the item "Invite to One Way Video Chat"
To start this from a PC follow the directions in the pargraph above. You may need to change the tab to the incoming Video at the back of the two to see the Video. These tabs are added when the Video chat starts and the front one normally states you do not have a camera and shows a connection to buy one.
It is also possible to chat One Way if the other person does not have a Mic: replies will have to be typed in a Text chat.
    Summary
For any sort of sound to a PC using AIM, (Talk in PC or Audio in iChat) the Mac will need a camera. The other person can have a Mic and then live chats with sound both ways and Pictures (Video) the other.
NOTE: At This Time It Is NOT Possible to Audio (sound only) between Mac & PC with AIM & iChat
Trillian Basic can Audio. Trillian Pro can Video and has a bigger picture and can do Full Screen.
Another explanation of the set up can be found Here

    Happy Chatting.

    Hi Ralph,
Just a type, you misspelled Netscape...
An AIM account/screen name (AOL or Nescape count as well)

  • Do I need to get a separate program to burn multiples copies of a DVD on Mac?

Do I need to get a separate program to burn multiples copies of a DVD on Mac, and not have the copies separate into AUDIO_TS and VIDEO_TS?  I made a series of lesson plans on iMovie.  When it opens on the original disk, it goes right to my music and intro menu.  When I try to burn it to a new DVD, it shows up as AUDIO_TS and VIDEO_TS.  It does not open at all.  Please advise.
    Thanks,
    Chris

Does the disk image that you created from the previously burned iDVD project look like this?
If so you don't copy any part of it to a blank DVD.  You open Disk Utility and select it like I do in this screenshot:
insert a blank DVD and click on the Burn button.
