Is it required to do Unicode conversion before applying NW70EhP1?

Hi,
I am going to apply NW70EhP1 in our BI system.
My BI system details is:
1. NW70 SP16
2. ABAP+JAVA Web AS
3. Non Unicode.
Is it mandatory to do Unicode conversion before applying NW70EhP1SP6 in our NW70SP16 non-unicode ABAP+JAVA BI system?
Thanks

Hi Yu,
Thank you for your answer.
But in the market place in the below two locations Non-Unocoe kernel are not available. As my system is NW70 ABAP+JAVA and having BI Java component as well as Portal component I am worring that will these components work properly in non-unicode kernel or it is required to convert the system to unicode?
Support Packages and Patches --> Entry by Application Group --> SAP NetWeaver --> SAP NETWEAVER --> SAP EHP1 FOR SAP NETWEAVER 7.0 --> PORTAL ADD-ON SAP NW 7.0 EHP1 --> Required Product Versions --> SAP EHP1 FOR SAP NETWEAVER 7.0 - Enterprise Portal
Support Packages and Patches --> Entry by Application Group --> SAP NetWeaver --> SAP NETWEAVER --> SAP EHP1 FOR SAP NETWEAVER 7.0 --> Entry by Component --> BI Java
Thanks again..

  • Unicode conversion and patching simultaneously

    Hi All -
We are planning to convert our core ECC 6.0 system to Unicode this year as well as patch it to the latest support pack stack.  In order to minimize regression testing time, we are going to do them both at the same time so the functional teams only have to test once.
The question is which order to perform the tasks in:  convert to Unicode first, THEN patch, or patch, THEN convert?    I'm not sure the order matters, but I can't find any definite documentation either way.  Has anyone had any experience with this that they would be willing to share?
    Thanks for your help!
    Abby

    Hi Abby,
this depends on what you mean by "patches" ?
Do you want to combine the Unicode conversion with applying support packages only ?
Or do you want to implement EhPs as well ?
If you go for EhPs, I would recommend to do this before the Unicode conversion. This is also the "normal" approach when combining an upgrade with a Unicode conversion.
In case of support packages only, both ways are possible (Unicode first and then SPs or vice versa) ...
By the way I assume you do not have an MDMP system - this would add some additional constraints ...

  • How to go for Unicode conversion?

    Hi All,
Presently i'm upgrading my SAP 4.7 system (6.2 WAS) in to ERP 2004 (6.40 WAS), which is an non-unicode upgrade.
Now should i first complete Unicode conversion or apply the latest SP stack.
Also please tell me how this Support pack will affect me in Unicode conversion?
Order of this steps will be really helpful for smooth flow of work
    Thanks in Advance

If you have already completed your upgrade, the best practice would be to install the SP stack first in order to have the latest updates available for the unicode migration tools.  Then proceed with the unicode migration.  There are slight differences in the process between support packages where you may have to create a migration program manually in an older support package and the very same migration program is included in the later support package.  SAP publishes separate unicode migration guides, based on the support package level, due to these updates.

  • Unicode Attribute - Necessary before Unicode Conversion?

We are about to upgrade to ECC 6.0 with a Unicode conversion.
I know that the "Unicode Checks Active" flag must be set in every
customer program in order for the code to run in an ECC 6.0 unicode environment.
My question is does this HAVE to be done before we do the unicode
conversion. What we would like to do is convert the system to ECC 6.0
with Unicode and then apply the transports which set the "Unicode
Checks Active" flag. Since some of these transports contain new
objects, we would prefer to upgrade to ECC 6.0, then convert to unicode
first and apply the transports afterwards, to reduce the risk of potentially needing to rerun
    scans.
Ideally we would have cleared all this before the upgrade, but we only
found this issue in our test system after we had upgraded it.
    Is this a bad plan?

    Hi Chris,
it is not necessary to set the Unicode flag for programming objects in order to succeed with the technical Unicode conversion.
However please keep in mind that the programs without flag will not work in the Unicode environment (as you already stated).

  • Should modifiable transports be released before the unicode conversion?

We are getting started on the unicode conversion soon in our DEV environment. Should we go ahead and release the open/modifiable transports before the conversion? IS there a reason for that? Since this is unlike an SAP upgrade, can we release them later after the conversion is complete. Any insight?
    Thanks.

    Hi,
I Suppose its not must , as i have done lot of language import with  open transport request.

  • Unicode Conversion necessary before 2004s upgrade??

    Hello,
Can anyone tell me if it is necessary to do an Unicode Conversion first before upgrading a BW system to BW 2004s?
The Portal we are going to use is unicode enabled.
So this raises the question: "Do we need an Unicode Conversion first?".
    Regards,

    Hello,
It's not necessary to do a unicode conversion for NW 2004s BI.  We still support non-unicode systems for NW 2004s BI.  This link explains the pro's and con's of staying on non-unicode for SAP NetWeaver BI.

  • Unicode conversion with MDMP, Errors in various TC´s SAINT , SNOTE,

    Hallo All,
We perform CU&UC of R/3 4.6C sandbox system to the ERP 6.0 EHP5.
Currently the upgrade phase is completed and Unicode conversion should
be started (we are in the step "Additional Preparation Steps in NW 7.02
    non-UC" in the CU&UC guide).
In various transactions (PFCG - Generating of profiles, SPAM/SAINT ) we
received an error "SAP characters 00367 and 00065 are not unique in
character set 1180". As a workaround we temporarily deleted Polish
language (PL) in program RSCPINST and activated (so only codepage 1100
was active). Currently we have activated the Polish language again.
In the source 4.6C system TMB (created by System Copy from productive
system PMB) there was also the configuration in RSCPINST of more than 1
codepage (1100, 1401) and in TCPDB table 1180 codepage was configured
    (see attached pictures).
    Our question :
How is it possible to avoid this situation in upgrades of following
system (IMB, QMB, PMB)? Could this configuration cause any
    problems/inconsistencies during/after Unicode conversion export &
    import ?
    Regards Peter Gauer

    Hello Nils,
After upgrade, before unicode conversion we got the following error message in PFCG, SAINT,..
"SAP characters 00367 and 00065 are not unique in character set 1180"
I got the information from T-Systems that they excluded polish languages out of RSCINST,
then codepage 1100 was used, than T-Systems added polish language again to have the original situation.
First message I got with the simulation (choose  blank latin-1)

  • Unicode conversion, blended codepages etc

    Hello.
    We have a ERP 6.0 single-codepage system on Windows/Oracle.
The current system codepage is ISO8859-1 (SAP Codepage 1100), which is fine cause we currently only use Latin-1 languages.
However a new project implementation requires installation of Polish language (ISO8859-2)(SAP Codepage 1401).
As i see it we have three choices: MDMP, SAP blended codepage 6100 or Unicode conversion.
Obviously we wish to follow SAP's recommendations and do a unicode conversion, but i would like some feedback on whether my assumptions are correct ?
    Thank you in advance.
    Gerhard.

    Yes, they are.
MDMP is a proprietary technology that uses the user context and the logon language herein to determine the codepage. It has limitations but it was the only way for systems before Unicode.
A single codepage system conversion to Unicode is pretty straightforward, I'd do that BEFORE you install Polish (or any other non-Latin-1 language).

  • Error while database export in package SAPDODS_33 (Unicode conversion)

    Hello,
I am performing Unicode conversion on an upgraded BI 7.0 system. This is running on AIX/DB2.
When I take database export for conversion, one package fails (SAPDODS_33) with error "The file system is full". In fact, df -k doesn't show that any file system is full.
I am taking the export to the following location: /db2/BWS/sapdata/EXPORT_DIR
There are 3 system-managed temporary tablespaces: PSAPTEMP, PSATEMP16 & SYSTOOLSTMPSPACE which were residing in /db2/BWS/saptemp1/NODE0000. This was getting full during the export. Now these temp.tablespaces have been relocated to a new file system of size 15GB.
But still the package SAPDODS_33 doesn't get exported. Could you please let me know how to solve this issue?
    Thanks a lot!
    Sundar.

    Hi Sundar,
if the problem is due to a high temp space usage. The root cause is typically the
sort during export. If the table is large, the sort spills to temp.
You can avoid the sort by doing an unsorted export or tweak the DB2 optimizer to use the primary key to do the sort.
Before DB2 9, you can reduce the OVERHEAD tablespace parameter to zero. Return this value to its previous value after the successful export. This is a indirect hint to the optimizer that random IOs are cheap. This might not help.
With DB2 9, this should not happen, because the  DB2_OPT_MAX_TEMP_SIZE=10240 registry variable is set under DB2_WORKLOAD=SAP which limits the temp space usage to 10GB if possible. You can reduce this parameter further if necessary. Another problem could be that the optimizer has chosen the wrong temp space. The optimizer choses the temp space with the largest amount of pages (not size).

  • Combined Upgrade and Unicode conversion of Sap 4.6C to ECC6.0

    Hello all,
my project team intends to carry out a combined upgrade and unicode conversion of an SAP ERP 4.6C system with MDMP to ECC6.0 (no enhancement package). The system is running on Oracle 10.2.
In preparation for this upgrade, I have gone through the SAP notes 928729, 54801.
We need to get a rough estimate of the entire downtime so as to alert our end users. From the CU&UC documentation in 928729, I read up note 857081. However the program in this note cannot be used to estimate the downtime as my system is < SAP netweaver 6.20.
Is there any other SAP note or tool or program that I can use to estimate the downtime for the entire CU&UC? Thanks a lot!

    Hi,
Combined upgrade depend upon number of factors like database size, resources on the server and optimization. In order to get idea of how much downtime, it will take, I would suggest you to do combined upgrade and unicode conversion on sandbox system which should be the replica of your production system. And try to optimize it. From there you can get approx. downtime required.
Also, please read combined upgrade and unicode conversion guides on  http://service.sap.com/unicode@sap
    Thanks

  • Unicode conversion in situ

    Hi SCN,
I'm looking at the possibility of running a Combined Upgrade & Unicode Conversion (CUUC) in-situ; i.e. without a migration to new hardware.
However in all my years of SAP Basis projects any Unicode conversion I've seen has involved a migration to new hardware (which makes good sense as the process is the same as an OSDB migration with R3load/MigMon).
What I want to know is - has anyone ever run one in-place. I.e. keeping the same server and running the CUUC entirely inplace?
This seems logically problematic as you need a target system to import to.
I can imagine a process along these lines though...:
    1. Take SAP layer offline
    2. Run full backup of system
    3. Export system
    4. Drop database* (to make clean ready for new import)
    5. Run SPUMG/SUMG/SAPINST to setup Unicode database ready to receive import...
    6. ....and continue to run import into that database
    7. Complete Unicode conversion process
However the big issue here for me is
    (a) *dropping the live production system is far from attractive.... I'm presuming everyone would do as I've always seen and combine this with a migration to new improved hardware, so that a backout to the old system is simple
    (b) I'm not sure at what point with the SAP tools (SPUMG/SUMG/SAPINST) this process would become convoluted with it all being in-situ on the same box. I.e. I'm not sure if it's something the SAP tools are really designed to cater for.
Any input/discussion on these points would be very welcome.
    Regards, doonan_79

FYI Community. Feeling after reading and research is to use a temorary server to import unicode converted system data into; then swing disks back to the original host. Making all required hostname updates during the process.
Allowing for parallel export/import, but going back to the original configured host to complete the process.

  • Alignment all out after unicode conversion

The system is now unicode compliant.
The purchase order, invoice that has Chinese text as line item are all printed out of alignment.
It had pushed the next field towards the right.
I understand it is becuase of the unicode character / bytes difference.
Can someone shared with me how can I modified the sapscript to get it back in alignment?
    Please provide a sample.
    Thanks
    bye

    Hi,
I have read the thread before. It doesn't help in my case.
    To share it with you,
I realised that I can place a length field after the  field.
Previously I could use &EKPO-TZX01(40)&. Now I had to remove it to &EKPO-TZX01&.
it works for some but not all sapscripts.
For those that doesn't work, I will have to changed it as well as setting the tab using a separate paragraph.
So much to change after this unicode conversion.
    Thanks

  • BAPI Receives unreadable parameters after unicode conversion

    Dear All,
I have a strange issue, which i am stuck with and need your help to solve this.
I have a BSP Application which resides in my BW Production system and it calls a custom BAPI in R/3 to fetch list of materials based on material-text search as one of the parameters. This used to work properly before our R/3 got upgraded to ECC 6.0 with unicode conversion.
Both BW and R/3 are unicode systems now. But, doing external debugging i found that the parameters that i am sending through BSP to this BAPI are ok on BW side but, when it reaches R/3 it is getting converted to some unreadable characters due to which the BAPI doesnot return correct results.
Please advice where does conversion is happening and how can this be solved. I need immediate help as I am helpless and its a production issue...
    Thanks,
    Chandan

    Hi Chandan,
please make sure that in transaction SM59 on both sides (BW and ERP) the rfc connections are defined as Unicode.
    Best regards,

  • UNICODE conversion of Siebel Database- Impact on interface

    Hi All,
This is regarding the impacts on Interfaces after Siebel database UNICODE conversion.
We are planning to do a UNICODE conversion of the Siebel database. In the current landscape we have Siebel interacting with multiple application which are non UNICODE.
Majority of the interfaces(outbound/inbound) are batch interfaces which either use file or PL/SQL + EIM for the data transfer.
We have the following queries about the impact on the Interfaces post conversion
    1) the Interfaces which are outbound from siebel to non -unicode database what will be impact on these interface.
    2) For the above mentioned interfaces do we need to do some conversion of data before it gets loaded to non unicode database.
    3) for the inbound interfaces will the siebel unicode data base will allow the data which is flowing from non unicode database.
Could you please guide me with your experiences which will help us in planning this conversion.
Do let us know if there must to consider points for Siebel database unicode conversions
    Thanks,
    Ashutosh

    Ashutosh,
Did you already start on the Unicode conversion?
We contacted Oracle, but so far they only said we need to go through a workshop where we can estimate the impact on the interfaces.
Since we need to do a cost/benefit analyses before we decide to do this, it's hard to do so when you don't know the impact on the interfaces.
In our case we use EIM, Web Services, MSMQ (XML) and flat files.
Anyone with experience with a conversion to Unicode and impact on interfaces?
