Is it safe to backup clone...
...if I've just had problems with the native drive? Could any problems carry over to the clone?
I booted from the clone, ran Disk Utility, and got the drive working again. I was about to perform my regular backup...but should I? Is it safe?

Yes, since the clone is basically a copy of the first drive. They would either get carried over (if you did a block by block copy) or they would be reflected in the clone if the directory was messed up on the first drive and the files were messed up as a result.

When backing up I boot from my clone, verify the main drive, then boot from the main drive and clone it over since I am now assured (as much as possible) that it is in good condition for cloning. In theory you should have multiple copies of backups of different ages (a la Time Machine) but I don't know many people who own that many drives.
The quandry comes when your main drive does need repairing. There does exist the possibility that repairing a drive may make it worse. Ideally then you don't want to mess up your existing good but dated backup before you are certain the repair has succeeded. You then need a second spare drive so you can clone the main drive with its possible errors so if something does go wrong with the main drive while repairing you at least have a copy of the files as they currently exist, then try to reconcile those files with the previous ones. Maybe this isn't terribly clear, but hopefully you see what I mean. I don't know of many who actually do it that way though. I've only had minor errors on my drive once and I just crossed my fingers and went ahead and repaired it - successfully.

Internal versus External drive for Backup/Clone?
Internal versus External drive for Backup?
Suggestions/comments as to the pros and cons of each approach.
Looking at purely doing Clone of main drive.
As a side thought I am noticing topics on issues with mounting drives. Does having the drive internal make this a non-issue?
Thx in advance.
Power MAC G5 Dual 2.0, 30" ACD, RADEON X8000XT card Mac OS X (10.3.9) I also have a IMAC G5If you use internal and the machine is stolen your backup is lost too.
If it's for backing up for Business use, your insurers may insist on offsite storage, secure offsite storage that is of a backup or they wouldn't pay up.
External is often good too because if you ever sent the machine in for repair and the fault(s) were mis-diagnosed and the engineers wiped the HD, they may wipe your backup too.
That would be very unfortunate. At least with external it could be safe with you. Depending how important your backups are you can also 'Scale' your backup by adding more drives to backup to. So increasin odds of recovery at a later date.

i'm planning to use an online backup service (Carbonite) but i'm afraid to backup sensitive data. where do i find the files that contain website username and password information?
and here's a paranoid question: i can choose not to backup certain files, but how can i be sure they are not being copied against my knowledge?...
thaks!!!I do not trust any sort of on-line backup services and use a combination of daily and weekly backups on several external Hard Drives.
I manually update a daily backup drive any time I add new file's, but Time Machine also works well for those that want something more automatic. I also keep two other backup drives that are Bootable Clones and rotate them weekly in and out of the fire safe.
Have a look at > My backup plan: Dan Frakes | Macworld it's a couple of years old, but still very informative.
I'm not sure exactly what Carbonite cost per year, but you should first weight that cost versus buying a couple of External Hard Drives over the period of a year or two. -
Backup (clone) disk - cannot open apps
I am very careful with backups, using a combination of Time Machine (for incremental time-stamped backups) and I also do a complete clone, on a weekly basis, of my entire HD on to a FireWire backup.
To be sure that the backup has worked, I always restart (selecting the FireWire backup in Disk Startup) to ensure that the computer opens OK and everything appears to be working.
Except it's not ...
When I boot into the backup, pretty much every app I open appears briefly then immediately crashes.
I have no idea what is causing this, so I need to ask some higher powers for help!
For info: I'm using Carbon Copy Cloner and doing incremental backups to the Firewire drive (making it bootable).

Today I tried to do the same using SuperDuper (as suggested), partitioned the drive in the same way (GUID) then let it do its backup. After startup on the backup disk, the exact same thing happened.
So, I have tried this on:
* 2 different target drives (both LaCie Rugged drives FireWire 400)
* 2 different Macs
* 2 different backup programs (CCC and SuperDuper)
Note that the 2 Macs are almost clones (one was a fresh install and then data migrated across).
So I'm not really sure what to do next! I've repaired permissions on the source drive before backing up ... not sure what else to do now.
Any ideas? -
Hard drive backup/clone using DVDs?
Im looking to replace the standard 60gb hard drive on my Ti, with one of the Hitachi Travelstar 100Gb drives. I'd like to clone my hard drive so that I can then copy it over to the new Hitachi drive once its installed. I have seen mention of a few programs that enable you to clone your hard drive and its settings etc but they seem to require an external hard drive to do this.
I dont have such an external unit so i'm wondering is it possible to spread the back-up over a number of DVD's? I have 40Gb on my hard drive so i'd imagine i'd need to use around 10 DVD's in total.
Can anyone tell me a step by step guide as to how I can do this?
CheersFirewire is better as you can 'Clone' the internal drive and the external will then be bootable. If the internal drive ever critically fails you can boot from the external.You could do either methods you suggest but the first would be safer. Put the new drive in the Enclosure; Clone it across using Carbon Copy Cloner and then swap the drives.
The small expense of the Firewire HD enclosure will be offset the first time you think you've lost a file and it's still there on your external back-up drive!

Backup/clone my windows 7 partition in mac os x. what program?
hey. i recently made a new partition using boot camp assistant.
its formatted as ntfs with windows 7. the problem is, i need more space.
the logical thing to do is to clone the windows-partition from os x, then delete it.
this way i could just make a new one with more space, and restore the image i cloned earlier.
ive seen many giving winclone a chance for this specific job.
i also tried winclone, but i encountered a problem which is (according to many people) due to the fact that
winclone has certain issues/problems with cloning a partition with windows 7.
after around 20 seconds into the cloning process, i get an error message.. probably
because of what i mentioned above.
a quotation "Winclone on Snow Leopard (10.6) has an issue cloning Windows 7 (NTFS) partitions. Disabling compression in Preferences may resolve this."
i would like to check in the preferences of winclone to see if disabling this compression might do the trick,
the only problem is - i cannot locate any preferences.. anywhere. how come?
and, is there a better and just as simple alternative to winclone out there, to pull this job?CampTune

Hi All,
Oracle 10gR2. Usual RMAN backups are taken to tapes using HP Data Protector.
Want to create a RMAN secondary backup (daily full backups) on the same SAN storage.
So that we can restore very fast.
What options do I have to take the backups.Hi,
With backup as copy feature;
in a case of failure, you can benefit the following example cases:
RMAN> SWITCH DATABASE TO COPY;
RMAN> sql 'alter tablespace users offline';
RMAN> switch datafile 4 to copy;
RMAN> recover datafile 4;
RMAN> sql 'alter tablespace users online';
What i understood is you have a production database which you backup to tape with HP data protector now.
And i offer you forget direct backup to tape and, backup it to disk (FRA) first , then from FRA to tape.
But you mention about primary database in your second post, do ypu backup from standby or something else? -
Is it safe & reliable to clone my drive?
A few months ago, I did a clean install of mountain lion on my macbook pro (2.66 Ghz Intel Core 2 Duo), and went through all the efforts of installing apps, tools, etc.. Customized my computer exactly how I want it... Now today, I just got the new 2.9ghz i7 macbook pro, and was bummed when I realized since the new disk space is done via flash chips, I can't just take the SSD out of my old macbook pro and put it in the new one... So I started the (extemely painful) process of reinstalling everything on the new machine.
Suddenly I thought to myself-- what about Carbon Copy Cloner? And I wondered, has anyone had experience cloning their actual boot drive and used it as their drive image on the new generation hardware?
Any suggestions / advice?DO NOT CLONE OS X from a older machine to a newer or different one.
Clones can only be booted/cloned onto the same model of machine.
You can run Migration or Setup Assistant against a clone from a older machine no problem as it thinks it's another Mac.
What Setup/Migration Assistant will do is ignore OS X and copy everything else to the new machine.
Each machine has special hardware drivers that won't work on other models, also newer machines have newer features that are not included in the older machines operating systems software.
Actually with new machine I prefer setting up all new copies of programs, for instance your older machine might have 32 bit software, a fresh install of the program can install the 64bit version instead, which can address more RAM.
The only thing I return to a new machine is cherry picked files from a storage drive into the same named accounts, this way I know what's on the machine is good.
With SSD's now, they can't be securely erased like hard drives can.
How do I securely delete data from the machine? -
Is carbonite a safe enough backup to proceed with an upgrade from leopard to snow leopard?
I am confused if I am going to lose all my files when I switch OS'
Just a note about Carbonite and iPhoto libraries: the library structure of an iPhoto library is not maintained when backing up to Carbonite so restoring the library as a working one is not possible. That's why rkaufmann87's suggestion of an external HD is so valuable.

Short story: I am trying to make a clone of my internal drive using Super Duper! but the 3 TB La Cie external hard drive I want to copy to isn't being recognized by finder or in disk utility. The external hard drive is powered and attached to the desktop via firewire cable. It was properly formatted and made one seemingly successful backup prior to this attempt.
Specs: I have a 27 in iMac with 2 GHz Intel Core i7 processor, purchased in late 2009. Running Mac OS 10.6.8 with 8GB RAM. I have a 2 TB internal HD with only 80 GB available.
Background: I've had few if any problems with this computer but I'm running out of disc space. It's getting a little sluggish and I find that I am force quitting iPhoto more often than I used to. I was getting ready to put a long overdue (less labor intensive) backup plan in place. I had been using DVDs to back up photos and some documents. My computer crashed last week while working in iPhoto. The screen was speckled and banded and I could not restart. I was able to boot in safe mode and run disk utility. The verification stopped (corrupted files found) and disk utility recommended repair. I did a safe mode back up with time machine to the 3 TB ext HD. I tried unsuccessfully to run safe mode with networking to attempt online backup with Crashplan. I read something about installing mac os x on ext HD and then dragging files over to it, but DVD player not functional in safe mode. Then I called Apple support to run what I had done by them and to ask for advice before running disk repair. We tried a PRAM reset but still couldn't restart in normal mode. He said my safe mode backup should be good and to run the repair, restore if necessary and if that doesn't work bring it to Apple for hardware testing. I read somewhere that PRAM resets need to be done with a USB (not wireless) keyboard so I tried again doing a few PRAM/NVRAM resets. No change. Later, maybe even the next day, the screen which had been banded and speckled looked normal again. Not sure why but happy. I restarted successfully. I ran a time machine backup in normal mode to a 5 TB external HD and wanted to make a bootable clone of my mac HD to the 3 TB ext HD (in place of the safe mode backup). The computer crashed again for a little while and I was eventually able to restart. I downloaded Super Duper! but my mac no longer sees the 3 TB external drive. Maybe I did something wrong when I changed drives in time machine for the last backup? I'm guessing I could crash again at any moment and would love to get this clone made.Yes. Formatted correctly. It' s new ext HD and I made a the first back up on it a few days ago using time machine while my computer was in safe mode. When I was able to restart my computer normally I quickly set up a time machine backup to my larger 5 TB ext drive. Also new and formatted for my mac. I was in a rush to get it going before I left for work so maybe I did something wrong. IDK. I can't remember but it did ask me about switching drives vs setting up. Although I don't see why the computer wouldn't see the drive.
I did try another firewire cable and no change. Checked connections again. The HD turns on and the blue light comes on (it's a La Cie d2 quadra deskdrive)
Is the SMC reset where you detach devices and restart? My printer, keyboard and mouse are all wireless and right now I don't have anything else connected.
I'll try another PRAM reset too.
* Question:
When I connect the 3 TB drive it starts up but I don't see it on my desktop, finder sidebar or in disk utility. If a hard drive starts up but doesn't show up on your computer how do you safely shut it down before disconnecting? I've been clicking on the desktop and then pressing the eject button on my keyboard just in case. -
What to use for backups? Should I clone the drive?
I have a 100Gb hard drive and would like to know what software i should use to backup/clone. I'm still relatively new to Macs and the idea of a cloned drive isn't as feasible in the PC world. I ordered an external drive (250Gb) and will use part of it for my Mac (Can I use half for my Powerbook and half for my PC laptop?). The external drive will have firewire.
My main concern is backups with the ability to boot as an added feature. What plan should I use? I have no problem cloning the whole drive once or twice a month. Should I buy Carbon Copy, Super Duper or Deja vu? Is there something better out there? HELP!The main fear I was referring to about the drive partitioning was the possibility of drive failure, which might lose data on both partitions. Whilst loss is a relatively unlikely event, the whole idea of backing up is to give you the re-assurance that your data is safe when that 'unlikely' event happens (which it probably will when you least expect or want it to). Over the years I have learned the hard way that backups should be treated in the most safest and most conservative manner - no shortcuts. That said, the event you described is very unlikely.
You can erase and partition the drive whilst booted into OS X normally, using Disk Utility. Obviously the PC partition needs to be formatted for MS-DOS. Once erased and properly partitioned, the drive will be ready for cloning. There's no need to repeat the erase/partitioning process in the future - unless there's a problem. These tasks do not need to be performed in safe mode.

Basic clone vs. backup question
I've got Leopard and I'm ready to install. I know I'll need to backup my data before I do. What I'm wondering is this: if I have access to all the apps I'll be reinstalling in Leopard, is there really any advantage to cloning my HD vs. just backing up my user folder? Doesn't the user folder really contain all the necessary items?
You are correct. You either need another drive or another partition to clone to. Since you cannot install a second drive in an iMac, you would need to get a USB or FW external drive. The good thing would be that after you get to a point where you don't need the clone anymore, you can use the external drive for backups. Or you can partition the external and use one partition to maintain a backup clone that you update whenever you make changes to your system and the other for data backups. Join the revolution. Back up your data. I'll send you a sticker to put on the back window of your car....

RMAN backups valid for clone database.
Hi,
If we clone the database using rman that clone database will be having different database id, incurnation number and new resetlogfiles.
so here we can't use source database backup files. if we want to use that source database backup files to clone database what is the procedure to clone the database.
please let me know.
thank you very much...!899329 wrote:

thank you very much...!You can clone/refresh database as
1) RMAN duplicate
2) RMAN restore from backups(restore control + database)
using source backup files:-
3) Hot backup clone ( begin backup, copy files, end backup, create controlfile using trace)
4) cold clone (shutdown database, copy datafiles, create controlfile)
5) whole database export & import -
Want to back up/save my photos to an external hard drive both for safety and for portability. I use an iMac, but everyone else in the family uses PC, so ideally I'd like to be able to use the drive on both systems. I have been looking online and it looks like FAT32 may be the answer. As I'm sure you can tell I am new to all this and just wanted to check that formatting the My Passport to this format will be agreeable to the Apple operating system. I have an iMac, iPad 3 and iPhone 5, if this makes any difference.
Any advice would be appreciated.
AlexI would use a FAT 32 filesystem only for files you will be sharing with Windows. It is an old, feature-poor filesystem. Of course that excludes any application files that are not Windows compatible (including Time Machine...). You should not think of it as a backup drive.
I would backup all the files on your internal drive onto a separate drive using Time Machine or Carbon Copy Cloner. It is easier an safer to backup everthing. Also, maintining more than one backup is prudent so have at least two backup disks. See this thread for more extensive backup advice.
https://discussions.apple.com/thread/5377719?tstart=480
Disks are inexpensive. Losing your data is not.
For FAT32 characteristics see: http://www.ntfs.com/ntfs_vs_fat.htm
