Is it safe to buy current MacBook Pro?
My 2008 MacBook Pro just died from the infamous defective logic board issue.
When I checked eBay, I see dozens if not hundreds of MacBook Pros from 2007-2012
being sold as is for parts for the same defective logic board issue. I paid over $2600.00
for my MacBook Pro, which only lasted 5 years (which is longer than most!).
As a 25 year Mac user, I really love OS X, but I really have a hard time justifying
spending a lot of money for another Apple laptop, with a risk of getting yet another
defective logic board, but the thought of having to buy a Windows laptop is making me cringe!
Any suggestions?
How can you go wrong with 1 year warranty and an option to extend that with AppleCare before the year is up.

Your warranty is valid worldwide. The power adapter is universal, so you will only have to invest in the correct plug.

I am going to buy a macbook pro for grade 12, and I need to know wheather I should get a macbook pro or a macbook pro retina. If someone could tell me (in a very simple way) which one is,better for me and why, I would be ever so apprreciative.
Why do you need a expensive MacBook Pro?
Your attending high school and unless everyone else is rich also your likely going to be a target by the more poorer students for theft or damage to the machine.
You could keep it home, but if you need it for class then your exposed again.
Also at that age your not very careful yet, a MacBook Pro is a expensive and easily damaged machine.
Unless your made of money and so are others at your school, I would recommned a low profile, just does the job cheap Windows PC.
If it dies, gets lost, stolen or damaged because of your inexperince handling senstivie electronics then it's no big deal.
You can buy a Mac later on when your sure you have a need for it, currently there isn't much advantage of owning a Mac compared to a PC, they do just about the same things now, one just looks prettier than the other.
Since 95% of the world uses Windows PC's your going to have to install Windows on the Mac in order to keep your skills up there or be unemployed, so it's a extra headache and expense.

Not only would it be safe but less expensive as well. The tray loaders are deemed to be the most reliable. Apple does not support Blueray so avoid that.

I like the all flash mem concept and other aspects yet would also like to see the hardware tested by users. if some owns a retina perhaps you could share with me yr. thoughts of it along w/ any rumors and flaws. Are these new macbook pros worth the price and when will newer models be avaliable??IMHO Never. To limited even if they fix the current problems with the current units or in a newer version.

Should I buy a MacBook Pro or a MacBook Air
I am currently going into high school and have saved enough money to buy a macbook. However, I am debating to if i should buy a MacBook Pro or a Macbook Air. I would use the laptop for these things
1. Basic Microsoft programs(Word, PowerPoint, Excel, etc. for school)
2. I will also be Parallels on my mac
3. Light amount of gaming (League of Legends)
4. Websurfing/Research ( usually with an abundance of pages open)
5. Studying ( as any student would do)
6. Video Watching
7. Music
I am willing to upgrade the internals of the macbook but have a budget of about 1,250 dollars. Advice about which laptop to pick as well as what upgrades may need to be made for the internals will extremely help. Thank youIn addition to what Japib wrote

Parallels has education pricing, ditto MS Office. Your school (district) might have some education prices for software. -
I have an iMac with Microsoft Office (and several other licenced softs) and an HD - Time Machine that backup all the stuff. I'm buying a MacBook Pro and I would to know that if I use the Time Machine to transfer all my stuff, the Microsof Office will work normally or if I need to reinstall it with another licence?
You do not need a new license. The license file will be found in /Library/Preferences/ and is named, com.microsoft.office.licensing.plist. Be sure it gets transferred and you will be fine. I see no reason why the file would not be in your Time Machine backup nor any reason why it would be restored.

I think you are referring to the Late 2008 Aluminum MacBook. It's an Unibody computer, and this MacBook has got a non-replaceable battery. You have to take the computer to an Apple Store or reseller to get your battery replaced.

I am basically a developer and wanted to build some apps. I have a MacBook(white) bought in 2008(earlier version of mac) and one of my friend has same one but bought it in 2009 (later version of mac). But unfortunately my macbook doesn't support 64bit due to which I couldn't upgrade my OS. My friend macbook supports.
If I buy a MacBook Pro (MD101HN/A) WITHOUT retina display, does it supports all upcoming operating systems (like Yosemite OS) at least for 3 to 4 years as Retina Display MacBooks or does apple will restrict OS up-gradation to only Retina displays.
I am actually confused between MacBook pro "with Retina" and "without Retina" display. I have few queries on this, kindly clarify.

You are asking me to predict the future. What the technical requirements will be like in 4 years from now is not even known to Apple. I can only point out that a mid.late 2007 MBP can run Mavericks and will probably also run Yosemite. That is a 7 year old MBP. I would wager that this is not a concern.
Can I go head a buy this below model. Please suggest.

If that model meets your current needs, purchase it. If it does not meet your requirements, look for other options. Retina MBPs have superior displays and very fast storage drives but from an operational standpoint are essentially the same as its non retina cousin. In the end, the decision is yours, not mine.

want to buy a macbook pro as i understand they are awesome? dont want the air as the pro is much better performance i understand.
basically do the prices stay the same and my budget is around the £1.1k mark so im looking at the 13inch 2.8ghz version.
will they release new versions this year and if so do prices usually rise etc?

thanksThe MBPs have maintained a price structure for a couple years, with changes occuring at intervals within those prices. That means, the high end 15" has gone through three processor upgrades since last summer and one secondary graphic processor. If you look at the 13" that is at your price point today, more than likely by next summer it will have a faster processor at that same price. And the current processor may no longer be available.
So if you have a fixed amount of money to spend, consider holding off until it is closer to the time you will be going to the university as you will be able to buy more computing power for the money.
No one knows exactly what changes there will be, just the history of these things gives clues as to what will happen qualitatively. -

Thinking of changing my current Macbook Pro for recently released?
My current Macbook Pro is the 15" bought in 2008 just when the glossy screen computers came out. Its a good unit with 4 gigs RAM, 2.4 mhz processor etc.
However, I just bought an iMac 27" i5. Its very powerful and is now the centre of my computing universe. Oddly, since I got the iMac I use my portable as a portable more than ever. I was thinking though that really since the iMac is so powerful probably all I'd need is the 13.3" new Macbook Pro. It would be lighter and more portable but I'm not sure it would give me any performance enhancements over what I currently have.
I'm just curious what others thoughts are on the new 13.3" Macbook Pro. The only advantage I can with it over my current Macbook Pro is the graphics processor looks like its more powerful. The battery life is also amazing. On my current Macbook Pro I'm lucky to get 3 hours. This machine is rated at 10 hours.
Considering I've got a powerful iMac i5, does it make sense just to get the 13.3" Macbook Pro or spring for the 15.4. I don't think I need two powerful computers considering I use the iMac as the centre. Plus, I realize now that the apps I use all this power is wasted on.
I could probably sell my current Macbook Pro for $1000 as it has a tiny dent from a fall, buy the new Macbook Pro for $1200 plus and have something that is a little more portable with great battery life and I suspect maybe somewhat faster. My current computer is of course a matte screen and I don't think you can beat that but I think this combo I'm thinking of might be a better fit.
I just want people's thoughts views especially around also that the 13.3" Macbook Pro is a core duo 2 and I think this processor is pretty well near the end of its life. I saw Steve Jobs say though that the performance boost from the new Macbook Pro would have been minimal with an i5 but a lot with the new graphics cards.
Thoughts would be very much appreciated.If your budget is unlimited, look at both the retina and non-retina and make a decision based on your preferences. If funds are tight, explore the options in the refurbished section. Unless you are dealing with courses that demand specific performance parameters, any one of these options will suffice.

Here's the thing: I want a macbook pro and an iPad 2. I already have a PC laptop that works and looks great and recently bought house computer, but I am an Apple lover at heart. So my question is should I buy an iPad 2 or a macbook pro? Whichever I don't buy this summer, I am going to buy next summer or for christmas. If your goal in the end is to have both, but buying one of them sooner, and then another later, in my opinion I'd buy the Macbook Pro first. Seems to me the differences and features added between Apple computer refreshes are less significant than the updates to the iOS devices, particularly the iPhone and iPad.
Ask anyone still using an iPhone 3G with the latest software updates installed how their experience today is. Aside from not having the newer features & functions, I've been told by several friends that the iOS updates have **** near crippled the thing, and it's slow as **** to do any of the basic functions (quite the contrast to when it was originally released).
This is largely due to the rapid increase of CPU speed and amount of RAM on the newer models which has lead to software development that's more demanding of the hardware. No doubt next years iPad will have a dual core chip in it, so I can't help but speculate the iPad 1 will inevitably suffer the same fate, and later on the iPad 2, etc... Oh and it will also probably have a flashy new HD camera similar to the 720P iSight found in the new MBP's for facetime calls instead of the current VGA camera (640 x 480)....again though, I'm talking speculation and opinion here.
