Is it safe to charge an iPhone overnight using a USB port on a surge protector?

I just bought a new surge protector that has two USB ports built in. I know it is safe to charge an iPhone using the USB ports on a computer, and it is safe to charge an iPhone using the supplied power adapter. However, I have heard that the supplied power adapter (the brick) that comes with the phone automatically stops charging the iPhone when it reaches 100%. I normally leave my iPhone charging overnight. So my question is, would it be safe to charge my iPhone overnight via the built in USB port on my new surge protector? Or should i continue using the power adapter that it came with?
This is the surge protector i purchased.

Yes, it's safe. The phone is actually what stops the charging.

Check the car documentation  ,some will support charging but many specifically will not supply a charging current
if not use a  USB plug for the vehicle 12 v charge socket ( or lighter plug in old world )

Check car manual to see if it supports charging ,some do not
or use a USB 12 volt plug in for the "cigarrette lighter" socket and plug into that ,probably a better solution

As output voltage is correct, charging is safe. It will charge about twice as fast as compared to its own charger.

  • Is it safe to charge my iPhone 6 Plus with a 5.3V / 2.5A battery pack?

    I have a 13,000mAh mobile charger with two usb outputs. One with 5.3V / 1A, the other with 5.3V / 2.5A
is it safe to charge my iPhone 6 Plus with the larger output or should I avoid it? Thanks!

The USB spec says that a USB port must provide 5 volts +- 0.5 volts, or 4.5 volts to 5.5 volts. So 5.3 volts is OK and within spec. As Rudegar says, the current is irrelevant as long as it is at least 1 amp. More is better, up to 1.6 amps for a 6 series phone. Above 1.6 won't do any harm, but won't help either. BTW, the max that a 5 or earlier iPhone can use is 1 amp. Again, more won't hurt, but won't help either.

If it charges when connected to a computer USB, it can't be the phone.  Try a different cable.

Is it possible to charge a Canon camera battery pack using a USB port?

Either is fine. I looked on ebay and battery pack chargers seem to be available to plug into USB ports. Until now my cameras only took regular batteries. I'm not sure if it will take an awful lot longer than charging at 110V but at least it's possible.
I'd be surprised if this effort pans out. The only Canon camera I've ever owned that could charge its own battery was a G-5. And I'm pretty sure it didn't do it through a USB port. It had, IIRC, a special charging port. and the charger itself ran on 110VAC.

  • HT4060 Can I use the power cord (30-pin and USB) that came with iPad 2 to charge it in my car's USB port?

Can I use the power cord (30-pin and USB) that came with iPad 2 to charge it in my car's USB port?  Or do I need to purchase one of those cigarette lighter charging devices?  Thanks!

You'd have to read your car manual but chances are it won't put out enough power for the iPad. The car is likely set up to charge a phone, most of which typically want half the power an iPad wants.
I think your  options are to get a cigarette lighter looking charger, making sure it's powerful enough for an iPad...or you can get power inverters for about $25, where they plug into the cigarette lighter/power point and have a normal household type outlet on the other end. Then you'd just plug your charger  in like you would at home.
Another option would be to look for something like a Zagg Sparq, which is a battery operated charger...plug the Sparq into the outlet at home. Its battery holds a charge and you can use that to charge your device. (zagg isn't the only manufacturer of such a device, Targus has one as well). Just look for portable chargers.
The key to remember is to make sure it's rated for an iPad, which will want more power than a cell phone.

    Hi,
The recommendation is to use the charger which comes with the unit. You still can use USB port to charge BUT it may take ages to get a full charge and this may effect your computer.
    Regards.

Click on the little up arrow next to the name of your iPhone to eject the iPhone first.  Then just pull out the USB plug, grasping it by the plastic end of the plug, not the cable.
