Is it safe to install L8 after L9?

Has anyone tried this, installing Logic 8 on a machine that had L9 installed first? Will it work OK, or will it replace any of the L9 files with older versions?

Probably a dialog box will ask you if you want to proceeed as that there's a newer version installed than the one you trying to install and that if you continue LP9 will be replaced....that's what I got today when I tried to install 6 over 7.. :P
I knew that it wasn't possible but as supercurious ...thought of giving it a try to see the options.....why don't you insert the disc to see ??

My iMac only starts in safe mode few hours after upgrade to 10.7.3

After I updated to 10.7.3 on my iMac everything looked fine, but after few hours of activity everything except mouse cursor froze in a fullscreen app. No keyboard shortcut was able to force quit the app and only way was to turn the iMac off with power button. After restart login screen appeared and after I logged in the system froze while after the Skype started and I wrote few letters in a chat there. Again only power button worked, but this time I didn't even get the login screen, everything froze on the grey screen.
I searched web on mac book and found info about problems with update and solution via installing comboupdate. I managed to start in safe mode and installed the combo update. After installation system started and all worked fine few hours until screen froze again, the picture gor a bit corrupted (some "empty" squares appeared) and I had to use power button again.
Since that time my only way to get to login screen is safe mode (holding shift after restart), next reinstal of combo update didn't help. New install of lion runs correctly the part of instalation in the safe mode, than it restarts after while computer restarts and installation progress is shown, however the progress freezes nearly imediatelly and nothing happens for next hour.
If I boot from recovery partition it starts after relatively long time the system utility, but even here interaction is wrong as after every click I have to wait few minutes until something happens, so I was not able to really start some action there.
I can only take the iMac to sevis (sadly the 1 year warranty over) on monday so any suggestions what I could try till then to make it working again are very welcome.

So the result form Apple authorized servis was that both motherboard and graphic card need to be replaced (cost aproximatelly 1100$) and in addition they said there will still remain some problem with display which would cost additional 500$ to fix. Taken in account that there would be only 90 days warranty on new parts I decided to give up with the iMac. Very disappointing after only 1,5 year on machine that costed more than 2000$.
Recommendation from me after this experience - buy 3 years warranty if possible. I am personally very much looking forward for Mac Pro refresh. I don't want to be again in situation that if something breaks in my working machine I have no chance to replace it myself and can only expect very high repair costs. Untill new Mac Pros are out I'll suffer working on Mac Book Pro.

CF9 - install Solr after-the-fact

We have a Windows 2003 server with Multiserver configuration of ColdFusion 9 (and subsequent 9.0.1 updater) installed. Unfortunately, we installed CF without selecting the Solr Search Server install option, and now are finding a need for it. What are our options for getting the Solr Search Server installed on the same server?
Searching through Google, I found some options but not sure which is best:
Solr Standalone Installer - seems to be for installing on a separate server, which we do not want to do. Unclear if this would be safe to install on same server as CF 9, and also would not give ability for any updates to be automatically updated.
Do a complete reinstall of CF 9 again on the server, but that would require extra effort and retesting of applications.
Install via CF 9 installation disk. One blog I found suggested to go through the installation process again, selecting to install with ear/war as multiserver, then would be able to select option to install Solr. We tried this on a test server, but were getting Solr errors (NullPointerException) when trying to create a new Solr collection.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated. I only wish Adobe had better documentation on this, as I would think it could happen more frequently.

Very interesting question, Tiana. But to be honest, no, it doesn’t come up that often, at least that I’ve noticed (and I’m pretty active on these and other CF troubleshooting forums and lists).
As for solutions, I suspect you’ll find the first option below works well. As far as I know, there’s no problem at all running it on the same machine as CF. And I’d not worry as much about “updates”. It’s not often that updates seem to relate to the Solr engine (though I’ve not studied that really closely.)
But you’re right: it really ought to be easier to enable Solr after the fact (whether for the Standard/Server or Multiserver form of deployment). I too am surprised that it’s not come up before. I’ve just done a fair bit of googling hoping to find someone having discussed it, to no avail.
It would be a cool thing for someone to research/blog about. It may be fairly simple, just as enabling CF’s built-in web server or RDS features can be enabled after the fact, if you know what XML files to tweak. But then the Solr feature in CF runs as a service, so that has to be installed (I suspect that installer will do that), and then there are CF Admin configuration settings that need to be tweaked. I don’t use Solr enough myself to be excited to pursue this myself.
But do consider asking Ray Camden and/or Ben Nadel, who both offer a means on their blogs to answer specific questions. I think they’d be interested in this one, in particular, since it would be a great contribution to the community to document if there’s any solution. Just uninstalled Adobe FlashPlayer and cannot view videos from several major sites such as CNN, VRT (Flemish Radio Television), etc...) Which version of Flashplayer is safe to install?

I uninstalled FlashPlayer because the last 2 weeks my fan was running continually and the CPU was hot!
I did this on advise of "mende1" and it solved the problem!
But now I'm stuck with the fact I cannot view those videos that work with FlashPlayer...
On the ADOBE site I can download older versions, starting at 10.1.
I'm confident that the heating problem does not exist with the older versions.
Any idea from which version it started? Which version should be safe to install?
From 10.3 they say that you can update directly to 11.7.
I guess that the problem entered somewhere here.
So I downloaded the file named "playerglobal10_3.swc", but it than it says that there is no standard program associated with it to open.
So what's the next step?

You should first uninstall any previous version of Flash Player, using the uninstaller from here (make sure you use the correct one!):

and also that you follow the instructions closely, such as closing ALL applications first before installing. You must also carry out a permission repair after installing anything from Adobe.

Hi, I had the same problem and I found that you don't need a serial number anymore. Here is what I did:
(1)I went to Applications fodder on my Mac. (You can navigate to the Application folder from 'New Finder Window.')
(2) Deleted Pages (installed as part of the free free trial version) from the Applications Folder. Also deleted 'IWorks' from the Applications folder.
(3) Started AppStore.
(4) Clicked on Purchases.
(5) Clicked on Pages.
(6) Clicked Install.
(4) repeated (5) and (6) for Numbers and Keynote

Download it from the App Store as Matt suggested. You may have to move the current version to the Trash Bin (don't delete yet), go to the App Store and look for iPhoto 9.6 under purchases. It will be free.
What iPhoto version did you have prior to the Yosemite upgrade? If it was iPhoto 7 (08) or earlier you'll also have to download and run the iPhoto Library Upgrader 1.1 on your library before opening it with iPhoto 9.6.

Are you sure it is a 4G iPod? Does it have a camera?

Old fonts from System 7 & Mac OS 8 & OS 9: Safe to install in 10.6.4?

I've been accumulating fonts for years and years. I recently got a new MacBook Pro and it's now running 10.6.4.
I still have, backed up on an external drive, hundreds of freeware, shareware and pro-level fonts which I acquired way back in the distant past, some as early as System 7 -- the "Date created" column says they're dated starting 1992 and every year up through 2004. (There's also about 15 System 6-era fonts in there too going back to 1989, but I think I'm just going to trash those.)
My question: Is it "safe" to install these fonts on my 10.6.4 machine? Or could the ancient fonts cause some kind of operating system meltdown or panic or whatever?
Perhaps the OS 8 & OS 9 fonts are safe, but not the System 6 and System 7 fonts?
Or all they all safe?
And even if they are safe to install: Will they work?
Lastly: What's the best way to install them? I see a new feature in OSX which I had never noticed until now is that if one double-clicks the font icon, a "Font Book" window pops up with an optional "Install Font" button at the lower right. Anything from System 8 forward will work. System 6 used bitmapped fonts. These are not supported in OS X. System 7 and 7.5 though were a mix. There were both TrueType and bitmapped fonts. Only the TrueType fonts can be used.
It does depend on where you're reading about these old fonts. One site notes that TrueType fonts were introduced in System 7. Another states that there were TrueType fonts in System 6.

Yes. I have tons of old fonts; Mac TrueType from OS 9 and earlier, Type 1 PS fonts from way back, etc. They all work just fine.

If you look in Font Book's preferences, fonts you "install" can go to either the /Library/Fonts/ folder, or by default, the Fonts folder in your user account. What you really want to do is activate fonts "in place", which is to activate them from where they are instead of creating copies. Do this by creating a Library Set in Font Book rather than a normal set. Fonts added to a Library Set are activated in place.

Maybe. What kind of other computer are you talking about? What operating system is it running? What kind of wireless router are you using?
Your best bet may be to just reset the router and set it up again.
Just so you know, WEP is a very old security system for wireless and is considered insecure. If you have it available, use WPA2.

Mac OS 10.4 Install Stops After First Disc

I'm trying to do a fresh install of mac os 10.4 on my mac mini g4. I restarted the computer with Disc 1 and booted up while holding C. I went under options and chose to do a fresh install. After it checked disc 1 the install began. After it finished with disc 1, it restarted and then it gave me the message, "Please insert the 'Mac OS X Install Disc 2' disc to continue installation. (You have chosen to install software that requires this disc)."
This is where the problem is, I insert Disc 2 and after about 10 seconds, it spits it back out. Nothing on the screen changes.
I've tried restarting it, inserting disc 1 again, restarting the installation process, and restarting while holding C with disc 2 in. None have gotten me past that message.
The discs I am using are the ones that came with the Mac Mini (two gray discs).
Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Hi there, That second Disk thing happens frequently, the best way around it is to do a Custom install, and eliminate enough Printer Drivers, Languages, Fonts, and Applications you don't need... then it may skip #2 altogether.

You can try a repair (may need to go to Control Panel>Programs & Features). A reinstall is a last resort, but if you go there be sure to uninstall from the control panel, run http://labs.adobe.com/downloads/acrobatcleaner.html, and remove any part left of the Acrobat folder. Then reboot as the administrator and reinstall. Be sure to disable antivirus during the install.

Install FCP7 after FCPx

Does anyone know if there are issues re installing Final Cut Pro 7 and the rest of studio on a clean Snow Leopard intal where Final Cut Pro X is already installed?
My current set up (new machine) has issues with FCPX but on another partition with just the OS and FCPX it works fine. I was intending to remove the existing partition so the clean install remains, migrate personal info and docs plus programs from an external carbon copy of my existing set up.
If I remove both versions of Final Cut plus the rest of studio and the new Motion and Compressor from the carbon copy partition then migrate apps I hope re installing studio will fix all my issues. Has anyone tried a partial migration with success?

Great news, it is all fixed. I used an application called FCS remover to uninstall FCS studio 3 and FCP X as well as Motion and Compressor. Re installed Studio from the disks, down loaded the updates so then Studio 3 was working fine.
Next tried to download the three new apps but my system (App store) still had them as installed. After discussion with AppleCare created a new user and downloaded the three apps then changed back to my normal account and everything is working perfectly.
