  • Installing Windows on existing bootcamp partition

    Hi,
My iMac is 4 years old. When i first set it up i created a partition called BOOTCAMP 211 Gb in size. I was unsure how to run Windows products on my iMac but ended up buying and using Parallels successfully until now. But there have been so many updates to Parallels and each at a cost that i am trying to find another way to run windows cheaper and possibly faster.
I was going to install Windows to BOOTCAMP but I'm not sure how to of about it and if it will damage my OS in anyway now that it is not being done as part of setup. I don't have my windows disk but have my Windows 7 Professional Key that i was using with Parallels.
I was proposing to do the following.
    1. Download from microsoft the iso image for Windows 7 Professional. How do i install to the BOOTCAMP partition if its a file of type ISO? Doing this won't affect my MAC OS?
    2. I was then going to activate using my existing key.
    3. It should run as with Parallels and possibly faster, correct?
Really appreciate your help with this.
    Thanks,
    Mike

If you iMac has a built-in Optical drive (or originally had one), you will need to burn the ISO you download to a physical DVD.
Use Bootcamp Assistant to partition (if necessary), or use the existing partition. If there is an issue, the partition can be manually cleaned up, if necessary.

  • Boot Camp "Quit and install later" corrupted the BOOTCAMP partition

I just had my new iMac delivered.
The first things I did was to run Software Update to install 10.6.8, then I installed 10.7.1 Lion and ran Software Update again just to be sure I got everything up to date as it should be. After installing a couple of applications via App Store and the web I set about to create a Boot Camp partition for my Win7 needs. When the assistant was finished (a new partition created and drivers saved to a USB memory stick) and told me it was ready to install Windows, but I choose Quit and install later (and oh, what I now regret that choice) because my Windows DVD was nowhere to be found (I should have looked a little harder).
Then when I later found the Windows 7 install DVD I launched Boot Camp Assistant again, but lo and behold when it tells me that I need to reformat my partions and start over from scratch. Boot Camp Assistant refuses to let me install Windows because I choose Quit and install later.
I have tried the following things to solve the problems:
Repair permissions and repairing the disk.
Start with the bundled OSX DVD to run fsck -fy followed by Disk Utility.
    Re-format the BOOTCAMP partition.
Boot from the Windows 7 DVD (which claims something along the lines that the partition does not support Windows installations).
Nothing works! Why? How do I solve this?

The past and having used whatever. FWB HDToolkit, Silverlining, $10K worth of scsi means??
windows requires that the partition table and format (GUID) has full functional MBR that Windows and Mac can work with.
Ever heard of take your best guess and double it for how much space to allocate? or no matter how good your partitions will always need to be changed.
Apple (that pdf guide?) is quite clear about one thing, which I usually but not here, take with grain of salt, that Boot Camp Assistant is a one trick pony to do the job of setting aside unfragmented free space for Windows.
ie, you can't use FWB Toolkit of SoftRAID 4.0 (excellent though it is!). Though Paragon CampTune (the company is rare, supports Boot Camp etc) and can be used.
If you created it now, but then you had 10.7 and Boot Camp 4, I could possibly get my head to imagine there could be an issue. And that is because every OS version has new changed partition table changes, making for this old (65 and going) mainframer to re-initialize drives whenever there is a change.
You can clone your system, format, and restore nice and clean with SuperDuper in a Jiffy. So why bother now? can't see it.
I understand people wanting 3 or more partitions. Wanting Windows to boot off external drive. Or use GPT and UEFT (that may happpen as 3TB drives and is beginning to be supported, but so far Apple and EFI are closed, proprietary, and GPT booting and EFI go hand in hand) but extra partitions is just... wishful.

  • Is it safe to install Yosemite, while running AdobeCC ?

Im running Adobe CC. Is there any known problems with running photoshop, illustrator or indesign with Yosemite?

  • Everytime I start to install Windows into my bootcamp partition the screen goes completely black after installing.

    Hi All,
I'm using an iMac late 2009 ( Processor 3.06 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, $gb 1067 MHz DDR3, ATI Radeon HD 4670 256 MB) with OS X 10.8. I've Boot Camped my Mac Book pro so I'm familiar with the steps to do it.
I've made a partition and downloaded the windows support data to an external hard drive. So I'm at the part where I'm installing windows (I'm installing Windows 7 Home Premium), everything goes smoothly and it installs everything but when it restarts and gets past the loading screen everything goes black and nothing happens. it doesn't get to the point where I put the serial number or set the time.
I thought it was an issue with my OS X so I removed the partition and re-installed my OS X 10.8. Then I've tried re-Boot Camping and installing windows but still no luck!
Anyone have any ideas on what I could do next? Any help is most appreciated

Why it would be OS X?

  • After installing Mountain Lion my bootcamp partition disappeared

I installed Mountain Lion, and now I can't boot into bootcamp, and there is almost no trace of it to be found on my computer.  It shows up only in Disk Utility as "disk0s4", but it's greyed out.  It can't be verified or repaired.  Is there any way to fix this?

OK I'm wrong. You have a 30GB partition that's unallocated to either Mac OS or Windows (i.e. it is free space), so there is a story here that hasn't been told because the Mountain Lion installer would not do this. I'm going to guess at some point in time you used Disk Utility to delete a former Windows partition and make a new FAT32 partition that was bigger, and then reinstalled Windows. Or something like that...
The MBR partition entry for Windows has the wrong partition type code (0c instead of 07), and he partition isn't marked as bootable. So that's one problem.
Assuming nothing is wrong with the Windows bootloaders, the simplest way to fix this problem is probably Camptune or maybe iPartition (but I haven't used either to fix this particular problem and I'm not sure how smart they are). Neither are free.
The next easiest, which is free and easy but there is no GUI for it, is to use fdisk from command line to fix the above problems with the MBR. The notes in [ ] explain the steps, you don't type them, just the first part of each line, followed by enter/return.
    sudo fdisk -e /dev/disk0
    e 4     [edit 4th partition]
07      [partition type 07 for NTFS]
    n       [edit in LBA mode]
875673600    [starting LBA for Windows partition]
101099520    [size in sectors for Windows partition]
    flag 4
    quit
y            [confirm writing the MBR to disk]
    Reboot your computer.
This instructions only work for the specified disk, for others to replicate, you have to know the correct start LBA and number of sectors, which can be found from either the earlier gpt or fdisk commands listing the partition entries.

  • I installed win 8.1 on my iMac on the bootcamp partition and can't access OSX anymore. What am I doing wrong?

Ever since I installed Windows I don't have an option to switch to Mac.I installed it on the bootcamp partition with the lastest OSX and Windows versions. I did this a few years ago with an older Mac and Vista and remembered a prompt to choose OS during boot. I get nothing but Windows now. Any ideas?

  • Will Lion install require me to redo my bootcamp partition?

    Dear all,
I work at a university that has little support for Macs and so the Bootcamp partition is where I spend my working days. (OSX bliss is for evenings only!). Before the nay sayers pipe up, we also develop PC software and so I need Windows 7. I would like to install Lion but setting up a new Bootcamp partition is a no no for me as it requires an IT technitiian to spend ages setting everything back up for work.
Will it be possible to install LION keeping the Bootcamp partition as is?

Yeap, Correct! Thanks to the 30meg download speed, downloaded and installed in 65 minutes. Sweet!

  • Installing parallels 7 after bootcamp

Hi, I installed Bootcamp and now would like to also install Parallels 7 on my computer, but despite all suggestions that I should install Parallels on the Bootcamp partition, when I run the Parallels installation, it denies me to do so as it says it needs to be installed on a OS X disk.... how do I solve this?
Hopefully I do not need to install Bootcamp after Parallels as it is a bit too late...

You install Parallels while booted into OSx. Then when configuring Parallels you tell it to use your Windows as the Guest OS. Read the Parallels installation instructions.

I tried to install yosemite yesterday and my computer goes through the whole installation process and then to a blank white screen.  I've rebooted, I've reinstalled several times and get the same result.  Two days wasted and I can't use my computer!!

I don't know if you've already resolved your problem, but I had the same thing, it took me 6 hours to fix it. I had the exact same as you, installed the update and then it went to a white screen. After trying start up holding down cmmd r or holding down the alt key to try to install it again, nothing worked, same result every time. Then an angel came to me here somewhere but I can't find it now to thank him. Start in safe mode, press shift once you hear the start up chime and hold it down until you hear it again. Installation completion box came up and it was working. turn off computer and start up again normally and all is well. Except my final cut pro x doesn't work with it, have to update that now too. same as when I updated to mavericks.
    Hope this helps.

    1. This procedure is a diagnostic test. It changes nothing, for better or worse, and therefore will not, in itself, solve the problem. But with the aid of the test results, the solution may take a few minutes, instead of hours or days.
Don't be put off by the complexity of these instructions. The process is much less complicated than the description. You do harder tasks with the computer all the time.
    2. If you don't already have a current backup, back up all data before doing anything else. The backup is necessary on general principle, not because of anything in the test procedure. Backup is always a must, and when you're having any kind of trouble with the computer, you may be at higher than usual risk of losing data, whether you follow these instructions or not.
There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional. Ask if you need guidance.
    3. Below are instructions to run a UNIX shell script, a type of program. As I wrote above, it changes nothing. It doesn't send or receive any data on the network. All it does is to generate a human-readable report on the state of the computer. That report goes nowhere unless you choose to share it. If you prefer, you can act on it yourself without disclosing the contents to me or anyone else.
You should be wondering whether you can believe me, and whether it's safe to run a program at the behest of a stranger. In general, no, it's not safe and I don't encourage it.
In this case, however, there are a couple of ways for you to decide whether the program is safe without having to trust me. First, you can read it. Unlike an application that you download and click to run, it's transparent, so anyone with the necessary skill can verify what it does.
You may not be able to understand the script yourself. But variations of the script have been posted on this website thousands of times over a period of years. The site is hosted by Apple, which does not allow it to be used to distribute harmful software. Any one of the millions of registered users could have read the script and raised the alarm if it was harmful. Then I would not be here now and you would not be reading this message.
Nevertheless, if you can't satisfy yourself that these instructions are safe, don't follow them. Ask for other options.
    4. Here's a summary of what you need to do, if you choose to proceed:
☞ Copy a line of text in this window to the Clipboard.
☞ Paste into the window of another application.
☞ Wait for the test to run. It usually takes a few minutes.
☞ Paste the results, which will have been copied automatically, back into a reply on this page.
The sequence is: copy, paste, wait, paste again. You don't need to copy a second time. Details follow.
    5. You may have started the computer in "safe" mode. Preferably, these steps should be taken in “normal” mode, under the conditions in which the problem is reproduced. If the system is now in safe mode and works well enough in normal mode to run the test, restart as usual. If you can only test in safe mode, do that.
    6. If you have more than one user, and the one affected by the problem is not an administrator, then please run the test twice: once while logged in as the affected user, and once as an administrator. The results may be different. The user that is created automatically on a new computer when you start it for the first time is an administrator. If you can't log in as an administrator, test as the affected user. Most personal Macs have only one user, and in that case this section doesn’t apply. Don't log in as root.
    7. The script is a single long line, all of which must be selected. You can accomplish this easily by triple-clicking anywhere in the line. The whole line will highlight, though you may not see all of it in the browser window, and you can then copy it. If you try to select the line by dragging across the part you can see, you won't get all of it.
Triple-click anywhere in the line of text below on this page to select it:

Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.
    8. Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Click anywhere in the Terminal window and paste by pressing command-V. The text you pasted should vanish immediately. If it doesn't, press the return key.
    9. If you see an error message in the Terminal window such as "Syntax error" or "Event not found," enter
    exec bash
and press return. Then paste the script again.
    10. If you're logged in as an administrator, you'll be prompted for your login password. Nothing will be displayed when you type it. You will not see the usual dots in place of typed characters. Make sure caps lock is off. Type carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you make three failed attempts to enter the password, the test will run anyway, but it will produce less information. In most cases, the difference is not important. If you don't know the password, or if you prefer not to enter it, press the key combination control-C or just press return  three times at the password prompt. Again, the script will still run.
If you're not logged in as an administrator, you won't be prompted for a password. The test will still run. It just won't do anything that requires administrator privileges.
    11. The test may take a few minutes to run, depending on how many files you have and the speed of the computer. A computer that's abnormally slow may take longer to run the test. While it's running, there will be nothing in the Terminal window and no indication of progress. Wait for the line
    [Process completed]
to appear. If you don't see it within half an hour or so, the test probably won't complete in a reasonable time. In that case, close the Terminal window and report what happened. No harm will be done.
    12. When the test is complete, quit Terminal. The results will have been copied to the Clipboard automatically. They are not shown in the Terminal window. Please don't copy anything from there. All you have to do is start a reply to this comment and then paste by pressing command-V again.
At the top of the results, there will be a line that begins with the words "Start time." If you don't see that, but instead see a mass of gibberish, you didn't wait for the "Process completed" message to appear in the Terminal window. Please wait for it and try again.
If any private information, such as your name or email address, appears in the results, anonymize it before posting. Usually that won't be necessary.
    13. When you post the results, you might see an error message on the web page: "You have included content in your post that is not permitted," or "You are not authorized to post." That's a bug in the forum software. Please post the test results on Pastebin, then post a link here to the page you created.
    14. This is a public forum, and others may give you advice based on the results of the test. They speak only for themselves, and I don't necessarily agree with them.

  • Installed Yosemite, now my MacBook Pro is running slow and the FileVault keeps saying estimating time remaining.

I installed Yosemite and since then the system has been running slow.  I chose to use FileVault and it says it's encrypting but keeps saying estimating time remaining.  I've tried repair permission and restarting my computer.  Saw some other threads with similar problem and ran diskutil cs list which showed 80% the first time and now says failed.  I also did an Entre Check and here are the results.
    Problem description:

Please answer as many of the following questions as you can. You may already have answered some of them; in that case, there's no need to repeat the answers.
Restart the router and the broadband device, if they're separate. Any change?
Run Software Update and install all available updates for OS X or the computer's firmware. Any change?
Are you connected to Ethernet as well as Wi-Fi? If so, disconnect the Ethernet cable or adapter and test.
If possible, connect to the router with an Ethernet cable and turn off Wi-Fi. Any difference?
If you can connect to more than one network, are they all the same?
Are all network applications affected, or only some? If only some, which ones?
Is networking always the same, or is the problem intermittent?
Disconnect all other devices from the network. Any change?
If you're running a MacBook with the lid closed, open the lid. Any difference?
Start up in safe mode and test. Any difference?
Start up in Recovery mode. From the OS X Utilities screen, select Get Help Online. A clean copy of Safari will launch. No plugins, such as Flash, will be available. Any difference?
If possible, turn off Bluetooth and disconnect any USB 3 devices. Any difference?
