Is it safe to plug in?

I live on a farm that has less than desirable power, that is why i bought a laptop.
i can charge cell phones, run a fan, or listen to a radio; however, brownouts (a drop in electrical current) have destroyed products with moving parts like cd players, and tape decks. i usually plug my laptop into a power converter in my truck which is incredibly inconvenient. my questions are (A) wether or not if the computer is OFF can i charge the battery. and (B) if i run the computer plugged in and the power drops(brownout) will the battery take over running the machine without any problems? Any help or insight on this would be greatly appreciated.
thanks,
derek

A) Yes you can although your PowerBook, and also its adapter, will make certain assumption with regards to your electrical supply so damage can occur if you have seriously bad power.
B) The brownout is where the vast majority of computer related incidents, like data loss, is caused. Yes the PowerBook will switch to battery if it realises it isn't getting enough power although how intelligent this is is not clear. Just like using a 45W adapter the damage it can cause your PowerBook and battery is unknown.
Why don't you just buy a UPS? It will solve all of your problems with power. A line interactive model is highly recommended as it will do on the fly topping and tailing of voltage. Try APC…

    Hi,
    Try resetting your iPod:  http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1430.
If that doesn't work, try restoring it:  http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1414.
If all else fails, you will have to place your iPod in Recovery Mode:  http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1808.
    Hope this helps!

  • Is it safe to plug and unplug USB and Firewire cables with the computer on?

Is it safe to plug and unplug USB and Firewire cables with the computers on? I have a Mac G4 and a newly purchased IMac and I use one printer for both computers. Should I shut down the computers when I unplug the printer and connect to the other computer? How about when switching firewire drives.
Is there an easy way to have both computers connected to the same printer? I have an Epson 1280 printer.

Yes, you can unplug a printer without shutting down the computer, but if you are switching the printer to another computer then you should first turn off the printer, unplug it, re-connect to the other computer, then turn on the printer. This will assure that the printer will be properly recognized.
If you have your computers networked via Ethernet then you can leave the printer connected to one computer and share it with the other via the network connection. Printer sharing is turned on using the Sharing preference in System Preferences. You will need to Add the printer on both computers so you will need the appropriate printer driver installed on both computers.

USB/Firewire ports were designed to be "hot" plugged. You can safely plug and unplug devices without usually having to shut down the computer or the device. Some devices, such as external HDs, digital cameras and iPods need to be "ejected" first, so as not to damage their formatting or data.
You can network your Macs wirelessly or with an ethernet cable and then set the printer connected to one computer to be shared with the other computer.

if mag safe is plugged into wall, but unplugged from laptop, does it still draw power?

My Kill-A-Watt meter indicates that my 85W MagSafe adapter draws about one watt when it's plugged into the wall but not powering anything. The meter doesn't measure fractional watts, so that's probably rounded up from a fraction.
When my 15" MBP is connected to the adapter but asleep, about two watts are drawn -- somewhat less than a small incandescent night-light.

  • Safe to plug my late-2013 15" MacBook Pro in Germany?

Is it safe to plug my late-2013 15" MacBook Pro into the outlet (with the appropriate adaptor) in Stuttgart, Germany?  Or will I have to use a transformer?
    Thank you.

You can get any sort of plug adapter kit - Apple even sells one (http://store.apple.com/us/product/MB974ZM/B/apple-world-travel-adapter-kit?fnode =3c).
I recall that they were once available in many electronics stores and even luggage stores. I've had the same kit from 1982 and never lost a plug!

    Hi Mende,
Thanks for the info. I am though not sure of the service centers here in Delhi (India) as they are really not concerned about the customer and try to make money by telling that things cannot be changed in warranty due to x and y reasons (my friend had similar issues and he was forced to buy a new charger even when things were in warranty). Though thanks for the info.

  • 85W Mag Safe adapter plug catches on fire

The plug portion on the charger block has begun to melt as a result of sparking and flaming at the base of the prongs inside the adapter.  The plugs are no longer retractable and have seized as a result of the melted plastic caused by the flames.  This is my second charger that has done this–so this issue might possibly be linked to the computer itself.  Has anyone seem similar issues?

  • Is it safe to plug in charger all the time ?

my question is that is it safe to plugin charger all the time ? when i am using laptop on charger it is using battrey or the charger power ?
if i use laptop with pluged in is it safe ?
    need expert opinions

Yes. It's safe to leave it connected.
That battery should not discharge as long as it's connected to a power source.
If you have not done so, calibrate the battery >  Apple Portables: Calibrating your computer's battery for best performance

  • In Brazil. . . Do I need an adapter to plug in my HP Mini 110 into a 220 Voltage plug?

Hi! I'm living in Brazil for a while and just got here. I have an HP Mini 110 and the plugs here say 220V. Is it safe to plug in my computer or do I need some kind of converter? If so what kind?
My power is about to run out!!!!!
    Thanks in advance,
    Sasha

No. The power brick for the iPod senses the voltage and adjusts for the different ones.
You will need an adapter to switch form flat us pins tot the round pins used on their plugs.

  • Safe to unplug display when computer is running?

    Hi,
I have a Cinema Display 27", connected to the mini DVI port of my graphics card. Is it safe to plug and unplug the cable, when the computer is running? I frequently need to connect my MacBook Pro to the same display.

Should be ok.  Most displays just think they lost their video signal and will "light up" when they get reconnected.
If you are going to do this frequently however, my concern would be on the wear and tear on the connecters.  They may get loose or wear out over time.  You should consider using some kind of KVM or at the very least adapters or extension cables since they are far cheaper to replace if they wear out.

  • Charging my American Ipod in Sweden (220w), is it safe?

I just bought an UK charger and it should be arriving soon. I'll buy some converters so that I can convert it around to be used in any country that I visit.
However, there's one problem: Sweden (and other European countries, I don't know which, but the Netherlands, for example) use 220w.
Is it safe to plug in my Ipod into the wall or will I need to buy some kind of additional item that will regulate how much of the current that goes into my Ipod?

The charger will work in any country where the voltage is between 100 and 240 volts.

  • Can you plug it in while on?

Is it safe to plug the mag power adaptor into the MBP while the machine is on?

The travel vibrations may have broken a sound connection on your heatsink. On some MBP they had to have extra thermal grease to make the connection while others had too much.

  • Plugging your rMBP even if having 100% battery?

Hi! is it safe to plug your macbook even if you already have 100% battery? someone told me its better that way to prevent adding up cycle charges? is true, safe? Thanks a lot! apple newbie here!!

So am I - at least 90% of the time: wasn't this way until I bought my 27" Apple Thunderbolt Display... now I'm at my desk most of the time. But I'll occasionally unplug to take the machine to another room in the house (and I've basically three adapters - two normal MagSafe adapters and one MagSafe adapter on my ATD) and I have a charger in both spots where I'm usually 'laptopping'.
Good luck - I think that you'll be just fine as long as you remember to let your machine discharge about every two weeks or so.
