Is It Safe To Uninstall Apple Mail?

Hello everyone,
Tried searching t'internet for an answer to this but drawn a blank unfortunately. I have a Yahoo! Mail account that although supports IMAP on the iPhone means I need to install their Zimbra software to get IMAP on my iMac.
Is it safe to uninstall Apple Mail as I can not use it and I would rather just get rid, if I need I'll re install Snow Leopard when required.
Indeed has any got Yahoo! Mail IMAP to work Apple Mail?
Anyone got any thoughts, advice or experience with this at all?
Thanks a lot in advance for any replies.
Kindest regards,
PB

Do you have to use IMAP rather than POP3? I found this on the web which may or may not help.

Incoming and Outgoing Mail Server Settings for Hotmail, Yahoo! Mail, GMail, MSN, AOL and more
*Update, 23rd of August 2009: Hotmail can now be connected to Microsoft Outlook as any POP email account. To do so, you need to download the Microsoft Office Outlook Connector.
*Update, 29th of August 2006: the Google Gmail service offers a SMTP server (outgoing mail server) for Gmail accounts. To use the Google Gmail SMTP server, use the following information:
Google Gmail Outgoing Mail Server (SMTP): smtp.gmail.com
The Gmail SMTP server requires authentication (use the same settings as for the incoming mail server)
The Google Gmail SMTP Server requires an encrypted connection (SSL) on port 465.
Why & when do I need these settings?
Hotmail, Yahoo! Mail, GMail and other providers are basically email services designed to provide you with email mailbox accesss directly from the web. However, going online and logging on to their sites is not always the most convenient way for reading and sending emails.
On the other hand, you have the alternative to send and receive emails through such a mailbox by using a local email client software, such as Outlook Express, Microsoft Outlook, Thunderbird, etc. In order to properly use it, you need to configure your email software with the incoming and outgoing mail servers of your email provider (Hotmail, Gmail, Yahoo! Mail or else).
Mail Server Settings
Hotmail Settings
As other web based email services, Hotmail is using the HTTP protocol for connecting you to your mailbox. If you want to send and receive Hotmail emails using an email client software, then your software must support Hotmail HTTP access for your email account. Some email clients, such as Outlook Express or Microsoft Outlook, offer builtin support for Hotmail accounts, so you only have to select HTTP when you are asked to select your email account type and select Hotmail as the HTTP Mail Service Provider.
Mail Server Settings for Hotmail using the Microsoft Outlook Connector
If you are using Microsoft Outlook & the Outlook Connector, you can define your Hotmail account just like any regular POP3 email account:
Hotmail Incoming Mail Server (POP3) - pop3.live.com (logon using Secure Password Authentification - SPA, mail server port: 995)
Hotmail Outgoing Mail Server (SMTP) - smtp.live.com (SSL enabled, port 25)
Yahoo! Mail Settings
Yahoo Mail offers standard POP3 access for receiving emails incoming through your Yahoo mailbox, by using your favorite email client software. To setup your email client for working with your Yahoo account, you need to select the POP3 protocol and use the following mail server settings:
Yahoo Incoming Mail Server (POP3) - pop.mail.yahoo.com (port 110)
Yahoo Outgoing Mail Server (SMTP) - smtp.mail.yahoo.com (port 25)
POP Yahoo! Mail Plus email server settings
Yahoo Plus Incoming Mail Server (POP3) - plus.pop.mail.yahoo.com (SSL enabled, port 995)
Yahoo Plus Outgoing Mail Server (SMTP) - plus.smtp.mail.yahoo.com (SSL enabled, po
(sorry- missed that last port setting. If you need it, I can find it again)

  • I seem to have multiple problems related or unrelated.  I cannot use Apple Mail for blueyonder and mostly for gmail as both show that the server is off line.  My pop up blocker doesn't work and I am blitzed with pop up windows on nearly every command

Firstly I am unable to use Apple mail except for hotmail, for blueyonder, gmail or Sky as the server shows as (off line) and I have no idea how to get them on line even though I tell them to go there.
My pop up blocker doesn't work and I am blitzed with advertising windows virtually on ever command I make, one seems to be impossible to unsubscribe from.
When I am in an email with a web link the web link doesn't work and I get a window saying that I must have a pop up blocker, but if I switch it off it is no different, what does work is switching the "enable Java script off", then when I get to the web site I can't use it until I switch the java script back on.
I can't do a screen shot either full or partial, when I try it changes the web site that is on screen to another.
So what have I done that might have caused problems, downloading Yosemite seemed to be the start of the problems.  Since then I have started to install Mackeeper, after checking with a family members who should know, that MacPaw is safe.  I decided that I didn't want to pay the subscription, so went through the uninstall instructions but it comes up as a pop up with considerable regularity.
My stress levels have gone through the roof with pop ups happening so regularly and not being able to use Apple mail.o can anyone help please?

Not certain, but this can fix myriad Mail problems...
Safe Boot from the HD, (holding Shift key down at bootup),  it will try to repair your Disk Directory while the spinning radian is happening, so let it go, run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, then move these folder & file to the Desktop.

After upgrading to Mountain Lion - and installing 10.8.5 update, the Mail application no longer works - it crashes on open. This happened after a system-wide crash which happened while Mail was syncing my Gmail account for the first time after a clean install of Mountain Lion.
Is there a way to solve this other than reinstalling whole system? Can I reinstall just the Mail app?
    please advise asap.

I'd try a few other things before a reinstall:
your .plist file may be corrupt. To fix:
    hold down option
in the Go menu in the Finder, scroll down to Library
in Library, go to Containers/com.apple.mail/Data/Library/Preferences and find com.apple.mail.plist and drag it to the trash
    restart
you will have to enter your preferences again (if mail works).

    3. a safe boot
    4. you could restore Mail from the backup you made before the 10.8.5 update. You did make a backup, didn't you? You should always make a backup before and update. In case something like this happens.
    5. If all that doesn't work then I'd do the reinstall. There is an app called Pacifist CharlesSoft — software you always wished someone would write that can extract just the Mail installer from the entire ML installer but you'll have to download all of ML again first if you don't have a copy of the installer handy.

  • I can't cut and paste any images into apple mail

I have had my MacBook Pro for over three years now, without much trouble, but recently I've been unable to send images that I have cut and pasted into Apple mail. I can attach an image that I have saved in my photos and it will send but I can not send an image that I have cut and pasted from the internet.
I am using a gmail pop account and firefox as my primary browser. It took me a few times to figure this out as the image appears to be attached in my mail, but is removed when I send, such that if I have text and an image in an email the recipient receives only the text. Before I hit send I can see both the text and the image.
I have tried starting again in safe mode and repairing permissions. That has not helped. I can login to my gmail regularly and cut and paste images with no problem.
    This is exceptionally frustrating.

Hello.  In 2012 you answered a query about the following problem:
"I have had my MacBook Pro for over three years now, without much trouble, but recently I've been unable to send images that I have cut and pasted into Apple mail. I can attach an image that I have saved in my photos and it will send but I can not send an image that I have cut and pasted from the internet."
This problem started with me this morning and it does not happen when I open a test account.  The thread stops after you asked if it occurs in the test account, did you ever find a solution to this issue?  I am using mac mail 3.6 on system 10.5.8.
I hope you receive this, I have never posted in one of these forums.
    Thanks in advance,

  • Sent messages disappeared in Apple Mail

    Hello everybody,
I use Apple Mail (v. 3.6) with Mac OS X (Version 10.5.8) for my Google Domains email addresses.
Yesterday, all the sent messages suddenly disappeared from my Inbox in Apple Mail on the Mac (only for one account, although I run 6 accounts on Apple Mail). I therefore signed in with my username on Google Domains and discovered that the messages were still there in the "Sent" folder.
I tried to Rebuild my mailbox in Apple Mail but it didn't work.
After that, I removed and reinstalled the account in question in Apple Mail, but it got even worse and now every time I try to open Mail, it completely crashes. I get the coloured circle and nothing happens (except that the email account that I reinstalled blinks in alternatively on the Mac files side and GoogleMail side...). Eventually I have to force quite
Does anybody have an idea of what the problem could be and how I could solve it?
Many thanks in advance. Your help will be really helpful.

  • How do I fix an Apple mail account that is "confused"

Last week I moved a mail account from one host provider to godaddy.
I updated the incoming and outgoing mail servers in Apple Mail and did a "Get Mail".
Two new messages came in so it appeared everything was fine, however I realized Mail
was not retrieving any other new messages.  Mail does not report any errors, just does
    not retrieve messages.
When I "Get Info" on the account I can see 75 unread messages under "All messages on POP server".
For some reason Mail will not retrieve them.
I can log into the account via webmail and confirmed that the password is correct, and that the account
    is working properly.
I have deleted the account in Apple Mail several times and recreated as POP and IMAP with the same
    result.
Apple Mail seems to have "memorized" the account even after I delete it, it acts as if some preference
has incorrect information about which messages have been downloaded?
Any help would be greatly appreciated!
    Keith

Thank you for the suggestions BDAqua!
The new Smart Mailbox was unable to retrieve any new messages.
Something strange about Connection Doctor, at the top of the window it reports "Internet Connection Status:  "Mail was unable to connect to the internet, click the "Assist me..."  button for help diagnosing the problem."  (this report is false because the other two accounts work).   When I click Assist me as instructed Network Diagnostics reports "This computer's Internet connection appears to be operating normally. Are you sure you want to use Diagnostics?"
All other status lights are Green within Connection Doctor, it reports "Connection and login to server succeeded" with all three mail accounts and all three smtp servers.
In safe mode, Disk Utilities repaired some permissions, no disk repair was required.
After moving the Cache files, Envelope Index and rebooting, Mail went through the Message Import process but there was no change.
I remvoved MessageRules.plist and backup, still no change.
I'm not getting a password rejection, no rejection or error at all.
In Keychain access I deleted every entry having to do with mail accounts and servers.  I reentered passwords in Mail accounts and still no change.
I'm using no SSL and ports check out.
After all the above I'm still in the same situation, have not found a way to create a new account that is capable of retrieving from my main email box. Very frustrating, I can't seem to figure out a way to bypass the "hidden" library file that's corrupt.
It's curious that the setting in Accounts>Advanced>"Account Directory" there is a "choose" button but you can't click it.  I was hoping I could chose a new location to fix the problem.
    Thanks for all your suggestions,
    Keith

  • Apple Mail opens and closes right away since migrated to Mavericks

    Hello all,
Could you please give me some safe and not too complicated solutions to solve this :
Yesterday I migrated to os x Mavericks => Everything works fine except MAIL application (I work with 1 gmail account)
Problem :  I click the incon, Mail app opens bu closes immediatly followed by an error message saying :
    " Application Specific Information:
*** Terminating app due to uncaught exception 'NSInvalidArgumentException', reason: '*** -[__NSSetM addObject:]: object cannot be nil'
    abort() called
terminating with uncaught exception of type NSException ".
For your information, when going to gmail account from the web, the mailbox works. So it doesn't come from Google.
Thanks a lot in advance for your help!

Solution from linc davies - Perfect
    Quit Mail.
In the Finder, hold down the option key and select
    Go ▹ Library
from the menu bar. Move the following items from the folder that opens to the Trash (some may not exist):
    Caches/com.apple.mail
    Saved Application State/com.apple.mail.savedState
    Application Support/AddressBook/MailRecents-v4.abcdmr
    Containers/com.apple.mail
    Mail
    Preferences/com.apple.mail.plist
    Preferences/com.apple.mail.searchhistory.plist
Note: you are not moving the Mail application. You’re moving a folder named “Mail.”

  • How do I synch iPhone 4S, Apple Mail 3.6 and Gmail?

I believe this is the simplest way to phrase this:
I want everything that I do to my Gmail account, no matter where I do it (iPhone 4S, Apple Mail 3.6 on a MacBook Pro, and Gmail on the web) to synch across those three platforms.
Now on to the more complicated part and multiple questions:
Please correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe that the only way for iPhone 4S, Apple Mail 3.6 and Gmail web to behave completely "in synch" is to use ONLY IMAP...and therefore, the first step I took was to DISABLE POP on Gmail web, and ENABLE IMAP on Gmail web.
Problem #1: My Apple Mail account was originally set up as POP. Therefore, I created a "second" gmail account in Apple Mail, using the same username and password, but choosing to use IMAP rather than POP. So now MAILBOXES in Apple Mail has 2 "sub inboxes" under my Inbox, which I named "Gmail Pop (for archival purposes only)" and "Gmail - IMAP." There is also "DRAFTS" (unchanged), "SENT" (unchanged), and "TRASH" with 2 "sub trash cans" - Gmail Pop and Gmail IMAP.
    * Since POP is disabled, at this point is it safe to completely delete the entire POP account from my Apple Mail? If I do that, will "Gmail Pop" disappear as a "sub inbox" and "sub trash can"? I would like to have only 1 INBOX and TRASH under MAILBOX in Apple Mail.
    * Once I am ONLY using IMAP on my MacBrook Pro, what happens when I have no wireless / internet connection (for example, when I'm out of my condo and riding on the train)? Is there any way to actually download my Inbox, Drafts, Sent and Trash folders to Apple Mail on my Mac using only IMAP - so that I have the option to work offline?
Problem #2: I figured out how to change the setting on my iPhone so that I can actually delete messages and not just archive them to "All Mail" on Gmail Web and make them disappear from the iPhone Inbox.  The issue is that on all 3 devices - iPhone 4S, Apple Mail 3.6 AND Gmail, with IMAP enabled I now have 3 "trash folders":  I'm not exactly sure where everything is going depending where it's deleted from, but I ONLY want it to go to TRASH (and not the weird [Gmail]Trash folder nor the newly created "Deleted Messages" option in Gmail Web) - regardless of how it's deleted.
    * How do I get rid of the [Gmail]Trash and Deleted Messages options across all 3 clients (iPhone, Apple Mail and Gmail web) - so that whether I'm running my thumb over the message in my Inbox and choosing "Delete" (iPhone version) / pressing the "Delete" button on my Mac (Apple Mail version) / checking the box next to the message in my inbox and then clicking the Trash icon that comes up (Gmail version) - so that no matter how I'm deleting my mail, all that happens is that it goes into just one Trash area (on all 3 clients) - so that it gets permanently deleted after 30 days....Basically, I don't want messages lingering in a bunch of different trash folders, where some are permanently deleted and some aren't - I just want 1 "centralized" trash area!
Problem #3: In Apple Mail --> Mail --> Preferences --> Mailbox Behaviors: If I want the solutions for problem #1 and problem #2 to work, which boxes should be checked?  I don't really understand why you would or would not put everything on "the server"... nor do I understand what "server" they are talking about.
Problem #4: Since I've started using IMAP on my Mac, my internet connection in general, as well as my Apple Mail, has slowed down quite a bit. Will this go away once I completely rid my computer of the POP files?
Problem #5: Doesn't it seem pretty simple that someone would want all the same things to happen to you whether you're using Gmail web, Apple Mail, or your iPhone? Why don't Google and Apple work together to make this a MUCH simpler process?

I'm sorry, but Apple does not provide a downgrade path for iOS. Because downgrading is unsupported by Apple we cannot discuss it on these forums.

  • Apple Mail downloads only one mail at a time...

    Hi Everybody,
My PowerBook runs on Tiger 10.4.11. And I have Apple Mail version 2.1.3, which I have configured to my gmail account.
Just a few days back I noticed something very peculiar about the download habit of Apple Mail which now downloads only one mail (this has started a few weeks back). Irrespective of how many mails there are on my gmail, when I press 'get mail' button, it connects to my gmail account and shows & downloads only one mail(the first in the row). Now, when I figured out the problem I have to press the 'get mail' button again and again till there are no more mails to download. It actually downloads all mails based on the receipt time, but only one at a time.
Does anyone here have any idea what this could be. I really look forward to sorting this out.
    Thanks in advance
    Malaya

Could be many things, we should start with this...
    "Try Disk Utility
    1. Insert the Mac OS X Install disc that came with your computer, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
    2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)
*Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.*
    3. Click the First Aid tab.
    4. Click the disclosure triangle to the left of the hard drive icon to display the names of your hard disk volumes and partitions.
    5. Select your Mac OS X volume.
    6. Click Repair. Disk Utility checks and repairs the disk."
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106214
Then Safe Boot from the HD, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, reboot when it completes.
The usual reason why updates fail or mess things up, is if Permissions are not fixed before & after every update, with a reboot... you may get a partial update when the installer finds it doesn't have Permissions to change one obscure little part of the OS, leaving you with a mix of OS versions.
Some people get away without Repairing Permissions for years, some for only days.
If Permissions are wrong before applying an update, you could get mixed OS versions, if Directory is the slightest messed up, who knows!
If many Permission are repaired, or any Directory errors are found, you may need to re-apply some the latest/biggest updates.
May even need to do an Archive and Install if you have room on the HD...
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=107120
I only use Software Update to see what is needed, then get them for real via...
    http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/
That way I can wait a week or so, check the forums for potential problems, and get Permissions & such in order before installing.

  • Gmail suddenly not working with Apple Mail

My gmail suddenly is not working with Apple Mail.
It said my username or password is wrong, but it was okay this morning.
Nevertheless, I deleted my gmail account, and re-setup it using Internet Accounts from System Preference.
However, I got the beow message:
There was a problem setting up the Mail account. An unknown error occurred.
I am sure my username and password are correct because I just login it using Safari.
Does anyone know what the cause is?
    Please help~~~

Gmail not syncing in mac mail is a problem that is also in snow leopard since the new year.
OSX 10.6.8  is the highest OS that will run on an Intel Core 2 Duo.  Do not try to install Mavericks on this machine! I will install, but turns it into a dinosaur and many programs will no longer run.
I had an issue with Mac Mail not syncing with imap.gmail.com. and Safari not being able to find apple.com.
This was resolved by working with an upper level tech support member for several hours deleating particular system library files, uninstalling most addons, reseting system network settings and a whole lot more! (too much to name here)
    Thank you Apple Tech Support.

  • Creation of a new Keychain Entry (Internet password) for Apple Mail

I am working on a Mail Assistant to set up a new Mail Account for Apple Mail.
My problem concerns the creation of the Keychain Entry for the POP Account with which Apple Mail is set up (by my custom Mail Assistant).
I am able to create a Keychain Entry with all relevant User Data, the Keychain Entry also appears to be valid (I ran the Keychain First Aid Tool to check it), but when I start the Apple Mail App, it does not recognise the created Keychain entry, but is asking me to enter the Password for the POP Account which I set up successfully.
Any help is appreciated for giving me a hint of how Apple Mail recognises or links respectively to its adherent Keychain Entry.
    Thanks in advance
    Thomas

Couple of things to try Theo...
Safe Boot, (holding Shift key down at bootup), & use Disk Utility from there to Repair Permissions, reboot once more.
Open Keychain Access in Utilities, use Keychain First Aid under the Window Menu item, then either check the Password under that item, change it, or delete it and start over.
Resetting your keychain in Mac OS X...
If Keychain First Aid finds an issue that it cannot repair, or if you do not know your keychain password, you may need to reset your keychain.

  • SSL is not working with Apple mail 7.2 on Mac 10.9

    Hi,
I am trying to create an IMAP mail account on apple mail with SSL(TLS1.0) on port 993  with our own IMAP server . Connection Doctor promopt error meessage that "Either user name or password is wrong".
On wireshrk traces we found that the commuincation is done on TLS 1.0 and Handshake is properly handled between  client and server side.
Client is successfully able to send "CAPABILTY" and "LOGIN" request command to server and in-return server send successful response to the client. But After 60 seconds, Client sends a Alert message to close the session and send FIN ACK to the server . After terminating the existing sesssion client again sent a SYN request to the client and the same process repeats.

Do you have any antivirus software installed? if yes, uninstall it.
    Best.

  • Apple mail and email accounts do not open in Yosemite

I have recently found the problem that I open the Apple Mail app and nothing is functional. When I try to edit account settings it doesn't let me access those. I want to reinstall mail app or at least update its settings. I read in some blog that yosemite "guesses" and changes your prefered account settings so I wonder if that is the cause after I backed up my emails recently I had loads of messages asking for my passwords, which never happened in Mavericks.
Does anyone have a clue what I can do? Solve it through time machine? Would I delete the app and reinstall it?
Thank you for any help out there.

start your mac in safe mode and try to open mail and check your accounts
Starting up in “safe mode” may help you diagnose problems you’re having with your Mac.
Note: To print these instructions, open Help Viewer’s Action pop-up menu (looks like a gear), then choose Print.
Shut down your Mac and wait 10 seconds.
    Press the power button.
Immediately after you hear the startup tone, hold down the Shift key.You should press the Shift key as soon as possible after you hear the startup tone, but not before.
Release the Shift key when you see the gray Apple logo and progress indicator (spinning gear).
To leave safe mode, restart your Mac normally without holding down any keys during startup.
