Is it safe to upgrade a friend's iphone to IOS 6 on my MacBook Pro?

I've transferred his purchases and completed a backup in iTunes. The warning that IOS6 will delete everything is a little scary, though. I don't want to lose any of his information.
Can I go ahead with this?

Thanks for the quick replies. He's still in the dark ages with IOS 4.2.1.
He said he had issues updating before and quit trying after that.
I'll tell him to try again.

How do I create seperate contact groups (family, business, friends) in my Contacts application on my Macbook Pro?

You should have an option to create groups in the File menu. To add contacts to this group, simply drag and drop them to it (switch to Groups display, to view all your groups).
Otherwise, you may create "smart groups", based on some criteria you define (File menu too).
    Hope this helps.

Can I upgrade my RAM from 4GB to 8GB for my MacBook Pro 13(early 2011 2.7GHz)? And how much would it be?

you can upgrade to 16GB if you wish to do so...
average price for 8GB 1333MHz DDR3 is around $50 - $75 depending on the brand.
why not spend $100 and go with 16GB 1333MHz from Crucial or Corsair.
you can get them from Amazon.com or newegg.com
see image below with 16GB Patriot Mac Series 1333MHz for $100.

  • Upgrade wanted but only to OS X 10.7 - macbook pro

    Hi all
I currently have OS X 10.6.8 on my macbook pro. My university library software I need to install requires 10.7 minimum.
Here lies my dilemma - I upgraded to Yosemite yesterday but it made my computer MUCH slower and it wouldn't let me download open source Office alternatives such as Open Office or Libreoffice as they are not Apple Store approved apps. I needed to do that, as my old version of Neooffice suddenly didn't work and you now have to pay £30 for the upgrade. So I used time machine to go back to my original 10.6.8 settings.
So, is there a way to upgrade to 10.7 (not Yosemite) or over so I can install my university library programme AND be able to download some open source Office alternative or keep my old Neooffice version working?
Is there an OS X you would advise me to upgrade to eg Lion, Mountain Lion, Mavericks etc that is preferred?
Any advice and step by step instructions much appreciated.
    Thanks

It's likely your Yosemite installation was messed up by the prior system you had installed.
Try these in order testing your system after each to see if it's back to normal:
    1. a. Resetting your Mac's PRAM and NVRAM
        b. Intel-based Macs: Resetting the System Management Controller (SMC)
    2. Restart the computer in Safe Mode, then restart again, normally. If this doesn't help, then:
Boot to the Recovery HD: Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the Utilities menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
    3. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions: Upon startup select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions as follows.
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the main menu. Select Restart from the Apple menu.
    4. Reinstall Yosemite: Reboot from the Recovery HD. Select Reinstall OS X from the Utilities menu, and click on the Continue button.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible
because it is three times faster than wireless.
    5. Reinstall Yosemite from Scratch:
Be sure you backup your files to an external drive or second internal drive because the following procedure will remove everything from the hard drive.
How to Clean Install OS X Yosemite
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible
because it is three times faster than wireless.

  • Hi all...  Just upgraded from OSX 10.6.8 to Mavricks, my Macbook Pro boots really slowly, and closes slowly.  I'd really appreciate help!

I just installed Mavricks over Snow Lepard, and my boot speed is really slow and so is the quit time.  From boot to ability to use apps. is slightly greater than 1 minute.  Once the desk top appears, the icons in the dock and all aps are not active for at least 25-30 seconds.  I would really appreciate any advice anyone more knowledgeable that I can offer.  I have attached my system boot log from BOOT_TIME to 1 minute past the time on the clock when I logged in. (I apologize in advance for the length of the log, but hopefully it will suply the needed clues):

Thanks again... Happy upcoming Turkey Day!

In the future please don't post so much information unless you are asked for it. Most of what you posted is useless.
    Here's what you can try:
    Try these in order:
    1. a. Resetting your Mac's PRAM and NVRAM
        b. Intel-based Macs: Resetting the System Management Controller (SMC)
    2. Restart the computer in Safe Mode, then restart again, normally. If this doesn't help, then:
Boot to the Recovery HD: Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the
COMMAND and R keys until the Utilities menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and
after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears.
    4. Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion, Mavericks: Reboot from the Recovery HD. Select Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion, Mavericks from the Utilities menu, and click on the Continue button.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible because it is three times faster than wireless.

  • HELP! while upgrading from 10.6.8 to mountain lion on MacBook pro encountered Mac HD error. Verify indicates Repair Disk needs to run but it will not highlight. Verify Permissions indicates I do not have access. Reinstall does not work. Tx. Freaking out

Really nervous. Can't get any of the support instructions to work. Error occurred while installing mountain lion upgrade from 10.6.8. PLEASE HELP!
I know I'll be checking for responses all night. Thanks

Assuming Mountain Lion did not install, you'll need to boot up from your Snow Leopard DVD (by holding down the C key while you reboot).
Once you've booted from the DVD (be patient, it's not exactly lightning fast!), you'll want to go to Utilities --> Disk Utility...and run Repair Disk.
The problem you're seeing is that there's something not right with your MacBook Pro's hard drive, and Repair Disk cannot be run on the same volume you booted from.
If Repair Disk was run successfully when you booted from the Snow Leopard DVD, and you see indications that whatever was wrong was corrected, you can now boot back up again from the MacBook Pro's hard drive.  Once you're up and running on the internal hard drive, try installing Mountain Lion again.

  • Possible to upgrade my Nvidia Graphics Card on my Mid 2014 Macbook Pro?

I purchased a mid 2014 Macbook Pro recently
and it has a NVIDIA GeForce GT 750M.
I was curious if it were possible to upgrade this to a better card?

    Thank you so much.

  • Upgrading from CS3 to CS5.5 on a new Macbook Pro

Does anyone know how simple this is to achieve? I'm upgrading to a new Macbook Pro. I have CS3, but want to upgade to CS5.5. I really don't want to re-install CS3 onto my new mac in order to upgrade to CS5.5, or can I just do it using the serial number(s)?

Yes, the upgrade installer will/ should just ask for the serial. You cannot easily install CS3, anyway, since it requires PPC support and would require installing Rosetta, which even Appel do no longer support...

  • Upgrade Ram, HD to SDD and New Battery for Macbook pro 2010 i7 15". (with price).

Hi, i want to upgrade my Ram, Hard Disk and Battery of Macbook pro 2010 Model with i7 processor and 15" display.
    My current configuration:
Ram: 2GB + 2GB (original with mbp purchase)
Hard Disk: 500 GB (250 GB full)
Battery: Cycles - 669 and Health - 87 % (As show by istat)
    New configuration I want:
Ram: 8 Gb best of all (what to do with the previous 2GB + 2GB Ram)
SSD:Minimum 128 Gb ( what to do with previous 500 GB

I ignored the (with price) part. Sorry.
    Crucial m4 512GB SSD - from Amazon - $389.99.
    Crucial m4 256GB SSD - from Amazon - $203.84.
    Crucial m4 128GB SSD - from Amazon - $112.87.
    Crucial 8GB RAM for 2010 15" MacBook Pro - from Crucial - $47.99.
What to do with your old RAM? Just trash it or label it and put it in an anti-static bag and put it in your 'parts' drawer. Or trash it. Or give it away. It's not worth anything.
    Good luck,
    Clinton

  • HT1529 Upgrade to 8GB RAM & an SSD OR purchase New MacBook Pro?

I am looking at upgrading my older mid-2009 2,53 Mhz MacBook Pro to 8GB RAM PLUS a 240GB SSD for around $380. Is it worth doing this or biting the bullet and purchasing a new MBP...lots more expensive. I am not a professional graphics or photographer but have PS6 and LR5 installed and only 4GB RAM....very, very slow. I like doing photo editing etc. Any advice is very much appreciated. Thanks

First I suggest that you go through this comprehensive trouble shooting document and see if you can optimize the performance of your MBP as is is currently configured.  The monetary outlay will be zero.
    https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-3521
If you look at the Crucial web site, you should be able to install 8GB RAM and a 240 GB SSD for $282.
    http://www.crucial.com/store/listparts.aspx?model=MacBook Pro (15-inch%2C Mid 2009)&Cat=RAM
Personally, I would install the RAM first and see if that makes a meaningful difference.  Install the SSD only as a last resort.  I have an antipathy towards SSDs based mainly on cost.  Others have different opinions.
Also update your OS to 10.6.8.
Do not be seduced by quad core CPUs.  They will perform faster only if the application is designed to take advantage of all cores.  Most applications are not (at least the older ones).
    Ciao.

  • Is it safe to upgrade brand new iPad 2 to ios 5.0.1?

I've just bought a new iPad 2 and am eager to upgrade to iOS 5 for all those new features.. However, the web's littered with complaints from iPhone users about major issues with the iOS 5.0.1 version. I haven't been able to find anything specifically pointing to problems with 5.0.1 on iPad2. Can people who've upgraded their iPad 2 to 5.0.1 tell me if they're facing any problems with the updated iOS or is the problem just limited to iPhone users?
    Thanks!

I would update. Just make sure you fully back it up first then do the upgrade.
I think the only issue I've had is my wifi occasionally dropping...which just means it disconnects and has to be reconnected every so often. Not horrible, just annoying.
I haven't experienced the battery drain issue and the other big glitch was syncing via iCloud and it eating all my contacts. But that' s not a problem with upgrading, rather an issue with the iCloud as a whole.

  • If i can upgrade my harddrive to an ssd on a 2011 macbook pro, would i have to re-download or re-purchase my movies/music all over again? or would icloud help? i heard you can re-download them back but how?

hello, i'm here to ask about my worries about wasting more money on re-downloading my favorite movies back on to my macbook 2011 model, because in a few weeks time, I'm upgrading to an durable SSD drive but my music/movies are at stake, so should i be safe with icloud as long as i have my itunes account? please respond back asap! my email [email protected] to be sure

the clone won't take you that long - i cloned a 30GB drive in 20 minutes.
    here are the steps:
first get yourself a usb external enclosure...install your new drive there....
    then download carbon copy cloner.
now connect your external to your macbook's usb.
launch disk utility - format/erase your new drive to mac os extended journaled.
close disk utility and launch carbon copy cloner.
clone your old drive - to your new drive - you will get a pop up saying that a recovery partition wasn't created.
create one with carbon copy - proceed with the clone.  once the clone is done, turn your macbook off.
install new drive in your macbook and install old drive to your usb enclosure - use it for back up purposes.
turn your macbook back on - if boot time takes longer than 45 secs - go to system preferences - startup disk - select your new drive as the startup drive - restart your macbook.
now it should boot at 14 sec.
    it's that simple
