Is it safe to upgrade yet?

Is it safe now to upgrade a MacBook Pro from 10.8.5 to Yosemite? Or should I wait longer?

Assuming that you are already in the habit of routinely backing up your system you can install Yosemite at no risk and at no cost. If you do not routinely back up your system, you should. Obtain an external USB or FireWire hard disk drive for your Mac, then download and install Yosemite on it. You can choose to start your Mac from that disk or the internal one using Startup Manager (hold an option key while you start your Mac), and evaluate Yosemite at no risk whatsoever to your existing installation. Just be sure to designate the proper installation location for Yosemite when you get to that installation step.
Running OS X from an external USB hard disk won't be as fast as the Mac's internal one, but it will be sufficient to draw conclusions regarding its suitability for your needs. All else being equal Yosemite should perform somewhat better than Mountain Lion due to various efficiency improvements.
An external hard disk drive of adequate capacity can be purchased for well under $100 - much less than the cost of some previous OS X upgrades themselves. When you satisfy yourself that Yosemite works for you, then "clone" the external disk's contents to your internal one, and use the external disk for backup purposes - which you ought to be doing anyway.

Yes, it is. But not all 3rd party plugs are compatible yet and fail AU validation.

  • Is it safe to upgrade to Yosemite yet?

Having been sitting on the sidelines watching this debacle and wondering if it will ever be safe to upgrade.   Never upgraded to Mavericks because of all of the problems that people were having.   So I really thought I'd be able to upgrade by now to Yosemite, but still don't want to lose everything.

I've had absolutely no issues with Yosemite on two Macs. a 2007 iMac and a 2011 Mac Mini. And none of my friends with Macs have had any issues either.
If you are expecting an Os without a single issue, or negative review or comment about it, you will be waiting a very long time.
Every Os release from any company is always received by scores of negative reviews and comments.  When you release an update to millions of devices in differing unknown states of functionality it is not unlikely some may experience issues. But its generally a very small percentage of the update pool.
But generalizing this to "the update is intrinsically flawed" is just silly.  Nothing in this world is perfect, less so computer software. But as long as you keep a recent backup, then likely hood of loosing anything is slim if any at all.

  • Safe to upgrade to Yosemite yet?

I have a late 2913 macbook pro retina. I am hearing lots of crazy screen issues popping up with the new OS. I waited for awhile so that these things could be ironed out. So now I am coming out of my hiding spot and asking..
Is it safe to download yet?
    Thanks in advance.

No one can guarantee anything. I have been using (as have countless others) OS X 10.10 since its initial release with absolutely no problems. Ignore the rumors....they are not, in any way, indicative of anything. 10.10.1 and 10.10.2 have been equally trouble free for me.

P.S. IMHO, partitioning an internal drive (unless one is Beta testing) is not a particularly good idea.

  • Is it safe to upgrade to iTunes 8 on Windows Vista (32-bit)

For the last few months after iTunes 8 has been released, I've seen post after post from folks who say that the upgrade process is less than perfect and in many cases causes lower level issues on their computer post-upgrade. I have iTunes 7.7.1.11, and each time I'm prompted to upgrade to version 8, I pass it up.
Is it safe to upgrade now, or does the iTunes/Windows community still hold reservations on the success of an upgrade and it should be done more at the caution to the user to proceed at their own risk, or is it once in a blue moon that a user would run into issues upgrading to iTunes 8 while running Windows Vista?
Also have folks tried iTunes 8 on Windows 7 and do they see any more positive results from that than on Vista?
    Cheers,
    George

In regards to Windown 7 Beta... I upgraded iTunes yesterday to 8.0.2 (never could get the 8.0.1 installer to work, even under WinXP). So far it's not been pleasant. I plugged by 80G Classic in to sync and it didn't want to eject. Windows and iTunes were fighting over the thing. The iPod synced and tried to auto-eject, then windows said "hey! here's a removable disk! What ya want me to do with it?" I told windows to ignore it (Cancel) and iTunes started syncing the iPod again. Lather, Rinse, Repeat... I was finally able to get it timed just right to unplug it during the split second that it showed the OK to disconnect screen and all appears OK on the pod for now. I'm not too happy at this point. I do still have 8.0.0.35 on my XP install.. may end up using that and uninstalling 8.0.2 if it doesn't clear up.

  • In the summer of 2013 I updated my Macbook Air to Mavricks and my solid state hard drive crashed and had to be replaced. Has this issue been fixed and is it safe to upgrade?

Please help! I don't want to have to get a new hard drive. My warentee has now expired. Is it safe to upgrade? The service person I talked to said that it had happened to quite a few MacBook Airs.

and I'm a bit nervous abut those two warnings. Is it safe to upgrade my xorg-server in this case?
I don't know if the bug was ever fixed so I don't know if I can upgrade nvidia...

I did the upgrade and rebooted and my two screens are working fine. The bug with the latest nvidia was that it wouldn't run two screens.
Thank you both, for the responses.
BTW, yes, I upgrade more than once a month, but when there are no problems, I don't make a forum post.

  • Is it safe to upgrade my Iphone4?

I have an iphone4 with MC603ZP which is tagged factory unlocked. Was wondering if it would be safe to upgrade it to IOS5 using my itunes? Heard that if i upgrade it i would lose its unlock status?

how would u know that ur phone is hacked or jailbroken to be unlocked?
If you bought the phone originally as SIM-free/unlocked direct from Apple, or had a network operator officially unlock the phone via iTunes, then it has not been hacked.
You said in the first post that it was "factory unlocked". This term means it was sold originally as unlocked direct from Apple.

  • Is it safe to upgrade ipad(1st) to the the OS?

It worked fine on my iPad original and I have had no problems. Before you update any device with any update, backup the device first just to be safe.

  • Safe to upgrade kernel?

Today when I did a pacman -Syu I got an option of upgrading to kernel2.6.30 and nvidia185.x.x.x
In this forum I found a lot of people complaining about crashes with the new kernel. Is it safe to upgrade the kernel at this point or wait until things get stable? I don't have my Testing repo on, jjust the normal ones.I'm just confused abt what to do.

Thanks fukawi2. I went ahead and did a full system upgrade. Everyhing works fine.
1 thing though, while booting [during starting up of daemons] I get an error message saying:

However, my sound works fine! My video works fine! Any ideas?
I got the same message on boot. I reran alsaconf as root and the problem went away.
That did the trick Thank you.

  • ITunes Plus not allowing upgrades yet?

None of the songs or albums I've purchased are allowing me to upgrade yet.
As an example: I pre-ordered and downloaded "Pocket Symphony" by AIR last month. When I visit its iTunes page, it's flagged as "iTunes Plus". However, its songs all cost .99USD and don't have the 'plus' icon, and there's nothing on the page allowing me to upgrade my existing album to the iTunes Plus version.
How do I upgrade my songs?

After my message a few minutes ago, I bought one track in Plus format (Paul McCartney's Band on the Run, of course). After the song downloaded and i started playing it for the first time, I again clicked on the iTunes Plus page link and now the page is topped with an upgrade your library button and a listing of albums and tracks that can be updated. It looks like Plus content is slowly coming on board as only a handful of songs could be updated.
In fact, the iTunes Plus page now says all my music is up to date but adds: Check back often as iTunes Plus music is continually being added.

I think iCloud isn't coming until this fall and not until iOS 5 is publicly available. Right now there is confusion because all this stuff is still in beta and things are under NDA and may still change.
I'd just set the 3GS up the same as currently. When iOS 5 is available in the fall (and I don't think Apple has specified beyond "fall"), before you update, there should be any number of guides to setting things up and how it will all work. http://macworld.com is a good place to look for such information.

  • Is itunes 7 safe to download yet?

I'm still using v6 as people I know have had nothing but problems with 7. Is it safe to download yet? Will the new features make it worthwhile?
      Windows XP

No, no, no. I sure wish I read this post a few days ago. Here's what happened to me:
As soon as I did an update to iTunes 7.0... and Quicktime (they were 2 in one), iTunes nor my computer no longer recognize my ipod when attached. Quickime will not play my Quicktime videos (get a neon screen with lines on all of them, yet they will play on Real Player). I've uninstalled and reinstalled each program 3 times, per the chat tech's advise. This has not helped. It is not my USB ports fault, nor my computer, nor my iPod. It's there programs! Anyone else have this problem? I can't restore iPod, as it appears nowhere.I'v had iPod for over 6 months, never a problem with it or Quicktime until this update. Help???? please, please, please! Thanks, Denise

  • Windows 10 upgrade yet on the K3011W

Anyone try the Windows 10 upgrade yet on the K3011W?
It's very close to working, but the NIC, while appearing to be problem-free in Device Manager, is X'd out on the tray and sees no networks. I'm working through whether it's the driver that had been working in 8.1 or something else, but would like to hear other experiences.

Wow, that's even older than the oldest one I have (I wonder which version Chuck is using?). I'll see if I can dig it up just in case, even though I'm all but sure that it's not the driver given the plague of users having wifi problems upon upgrading to Win10 (even accounting for those where it's caused by VPN software). Don't be surprised to see the latest version appear in Windows Update and be installed automatically. That's very weird about the Win10 tray icon suddenly changing. By the time I ran the manual install tool, the Win10 tray icon had been gone for a day or so (I'm not sure why, but I have read others say the same thing), so it wasn't around to object. I don't know if you've looked in Device Manager lately, but after upgrading to Win10 I noticed some problems in the System Devices section, specifically the thermal framework items. To get them back to normal, I had to revert to the previous driver for several of them in that section. I noticed this in Win81 too about a month ago when I stupidly approved a Windows Update for the thermal drivers. No doubt the same ones were pushed out to Win10.                                                                                                                                                                                   Just looked in Device Manager. No issues! ;-)
