Is it safe to use macpaw on your mac?

Hi, I was looking to clean out my mac because I have not done so in awhile. What is safest to download and install to clean out my mac? I have two sites that I have looked into but I don't know if it is safe or recommended by Apple. I've looked at MacPaw and MacUpdate, are these safe to use on my computer? Help needed.

These are third-party applications. Apple does not make recommendations of third-party software. If you don't know what they are nor wish to take the time to find out, then the safest thing to do is remove them:
Uninstalling Software: The Basics
Most OS X applications are completely self-contained "packages" that can be uninstalled by simply dragging the application to the Trash.  Applications may create preference files that are stored in the /Home/Library/Preferences/ folder.  Although they do nothing once you delete the associated application, they do take up some disk space.  If you want you can look for them in the above location and delete them, too.
Some applications may install an uninstaller program that can be used to remove the application.  In some cases the uninstaller may be part of the application's installer, and is invoked by clicking on a Customize button that will appear during the install process.
Some applications may install components in the /Home/Library/Applications Support/ folder.  You can also check there to see if the application has created a folder.  You can also delete the folder that's in the Applications Support folder.  Again, they don't do anything but take up disk space once the application is trashed.
Some applications may install a startupitem or a Log In item.  Startupitems are usually installed in the /Library/StartupItems/ folder and less often in the /Home/Library/StartupItems/ folder.  Log In Items are set in the Accounts preferences.  Open System Preferences, click on the Accounts icon, then click on the LogIn Items tab.  Locate the item in the list for the application you want to remove and click on the "-" button to delete it from the list.
Some software use startup daemons or agents that are a new feature of the OS.  Look for them in /Library/LaunchAgents/ and /Library/LaunchDaemons/ or in /Home/Library/LaunchAgents/.
If an application installs any other files the best way to track them down is to do a Finder search using the application name or the developer name as the search term.  Unfortunately Spotlight will not look in certain folders by default.  You can modify Spotlight's behavior or use a third-party search utility, EasyFind 4.9, instead.
Some applications install a receipt in the /Library/Receipts/ folder.  Usually with the same name as the program or the developer.  The item generally has a ".pkg" extension.  Be sure you also delete this item as some programs use it to determine if it's already installed.
There are many utilities that can uninstall applications.  Here is a selection:
AppZapper 2.0.1
AppDelete 3.2.6
Automaton 1.50
Hazel
AppCleaner 2.1.0
CleanApp
iTrash 1.8.2
Amnesia
Uninstaller 1.15.1
Spring Cleaning 11.0.1
Look for them at VersionTracker or MacUpdate.

You have  DiskUtility to run periodicly for your basic good house keeping.  As for as fast I would recommend 8GB of RAM.
I would recommend Installing AppleJack -

  • Do all the useful notes in your Mac's address book sync over to the Iphone?

Hi, I'm thinking of taking the plunge to buy Iphone mainly for the usefulness of address book synching but do all the notes entered on my Mac transfer over to the Iphone and vice-versa?
This is a crucial aspect for me. I know for instance that if you email a contact or group of contacts to another Mac user any notes present on the original contact are dumped (i.e not included) during the transfer - a horrendous oversight on Apple's part in my opinion and I'm worried that this might apply to Iphone connectivity too...
    Thanks
    Simon

My adress book notes came across from my Mac, though they're not extensive. Just read somewhere that smart groups don't transfer over, although ordinary groups do (mine did).

  • Is AppCleaner safe to use?

Is the third party App Cleaner app safe to use to remove your files?

I would, because you absolutely can't trust it even to do a good job of what it claims to do. Here's an example:
I have a graphic hardware benchmarking utility called Cinebench that's outdated and that I might as well get rid of. It was installed into a Cinebench folder that, according to its Get Info window, contains 329.3 MB in 7118 files. When I drag the Cinebench application icon onto AppCleaner, AppCleaner finds the application file that I dragged (65.6MB) and two other tiny files of 4.1KB and 24.6KB, for a total of less than 66MB. After deleting everything that AppCleaner thinks is associated with CineBench, I'll still have 7115 files totalling more than 263MB that were installed with Cinebench remaining on my hard drive. Case closed, as far as I'm concerned!

  • If your Mac suddenly looses Firewire devices, here's one cure...

Since we FCP people use a lot of external Firewire drives, this might be useful.
If your Mac suddenly looses Firewire devices, try this. (I got this from LukeA on the iLounge forums.)
Shut off your Mac for at least 10 minutes. Then reset the P-RAM (whatever that is) by holding these keys on startup: Cmd + Opt + P + R - until the Mac chimes a few times.
My Mac Mini suddenly stopped recognizing any external Firewire drives. I thought the port had probably blown on the computer, and was about to buy a new iMac, but I tried this as a last resort. It worked!
Now I don't get my new iMac! ****!

I got this from LukeA on the iLounge forums
Just so you'll know, Apple has a ton of articles and how-to's right on this website (just click the Support link above and do a search). Other common Firewire problems can also be addressed by resetting the PMU (Power Management Unit) button: http://search.info.apple.com/?search=Go&lr=lang_en&kword=&type=&newstype=&q=pmu

  • Proxy use with uverse and mac

    Hi,
I'm trying to use a proxy (BTGuard) with my Mac Mini and MacBook that are connected to a 2wire 3800HGV-B (Uverse). I've tried opening the ports that the proxy is using to no avail. When I try it as a PC (running Paralells) is works fine, which leads me to beleive the Macs are not getting along with the 2wire. Would opening the 2wire on DMZPlus to an Airport Extreme resolve this issue? Any help would be appreciated. I hate running Paralells. Thanks!

If you are accessing GMail via IMAP labels can be configured like Mailboxes, and you can still use SmartMailboxes on your Mac. If you enable the Advanced IMAP controls in GMail's web interface you can configure which Labels/Mailboxes appear in IMAP email clients. And in Mac OS X Mail you can map Mail's default folders to GMails folders so everything stays in sync.
Have a read of the link below to see if it answers some of your concerns:
    http://complexdiagrams.com/2009/01/19/imap-for-gmail-mailapp-iphone/
Why do you think you need an official GMail app? The email client that comes with the iPhone works fine with GMail. And there's the official web app.

Common issues? Trouble just downloading drivers. Burning ISO. Using external USB-DVD or flash installer drive. Lack of internet access!! audio, graphic drivers, graphic switching between Intel and ATI.
Someone wrote a nice guide "How to install Windows on Mac Using Boot Camp" o weeks ago, it was nice, but I CANNOT find it again (I should have bookmarked it and put the link in the quick reference cheat sheet. They seemed to not be aware of the help on the Boot Camp Support page.

I created a new Windows user, that was not Administrator. When I logged in Boot Camp updateded something and asked me to restart the computer.
After restarting and logging in with my new user, I could start the "Boot Camp Control Panel" configure tap to click and use F1-F12 as function keys.
Then I changed the new account to Administrator and now the control panel can not be startet again... but my settings remained... only on the new user only though.
    ============
I had problems with windows 7 after the installation using boot camp. The GT 650M was not showing up as the graphics adapter. I fixed the problem by inserting my windows support software CD a second time. I did not let it use auto run.  I went into the Windows 7 directory and then into the Nvidia directory and ran setup.exe. This installed the Nvidia drivers for me. If this works correctly, you will have an Nvidia control panel available to you. I set the resolution to 2880x1800. I also set windows to 200% magnification.
I think what happens is that after you install windows, and then run the windows support CD, the main boot camp setup script seems to stop on the nvidia driver install--everything else installed correctly.

I did manage to make the trackpad work. You need to install trackpad++
(http://www.techspot.com/downloads/4967-trackpad-control-module.html), it will enable the trackpad driver on boot camp. After you install the trackpad++, trackpad++ will complain something. ingnore it.  You should be able to enable trackpad. And you can now even uninstall the  trackpad++, the trackpad will sill work.
brightness, what graphics card are you using? It might be due to the auto adjusting brightness running there. You can go to your power options, edit the one you are using  (Change plan settings >> Change advanced power settings) and look for Batteries >> Enable adaptive brightness and disable the one you are using. After that, the scrollbar for adjusting brightness in power options should work again.
HDMI audio in Windows 7 64 bit
reinstalled the Intel video drivers and audio worked immediately.

           .   .       upgrade to 8GB ram
Samsung 8000 series LED TV connected with HDMI
Memorex external BluRay writer(USB only power)
For Windows 7 install, I tried installing with the 64 bit DVD but this failed as documented elsewhere.
Instead, setup with USB drive, follow instructions available in bootcamp
After partitioning drive with boot camp and reboot, install Windows 7 with install wizard.
When asked whether to allow automatic updates say 'no', then complete installation and run boot camp tools for Windows.
Because the network driver gets installed prior to the Intel video driver, Windows will install the Windows Update Intel video driver which breaks HDMI audio.
When auto updates are off, the Intel video driver that is correct gets installed last.  HDMI audio works with this driver.
Apple should install the Intel video driver first and it would solve this problem.
I now have full blown 3D BluRay support on the MacMini with TruHD audio, fantastic!

After much testing, I have found the cause of lagging/jumpiness on the Bluetooth Magic Mouse and Magic TrackPad in Boot Camp. Hopefully this will help others:
The drivers for the Broadcom 802.11n Wireless Adapter have a setting called "Bluetooth Collaboration" that is Disabled by default. Enabling this option removes the problem instantly. My Magic Trackpad now works flawlessly, even if I stand 6 metres from the machine. It now works just as well as under Mac OS. The setting can be found under:
Control Panel > Device Manager > Network Adapters > Broadcom 802.11n Network Adapter (right click and choose "Properties".
Under the "Advanced" tab, highlight the setting named "Bluetooth Collaboration", then change it to Enable. Then click OK.
I narrowed the problem down to the wireless card by disabling ALL startup services and processes for Windows, then re-enabling one by one.
As soon as I enabled the Windows Wireless Service, the problem came back.
Similarly, disabling the Wireless Card inside the Network and Sharing Center (or Device Manager) removes the problem.
This led me to believe it must be a driver issue with the wireless card, since the problem didn't occur with the Magic TrackPad under Mac OS, or on my mother's Windows 7 64-bit computer.
So when I went into the Driver Properties to check for an update, I found this setting about Bluetooth Collaboration.
All Apple notebooks use the Broadcom card (and have done for years), so this driver is installed for almost anybody using Boot Camp on an Apple notebook. I'd assume this problem would affect anybody using Boot Camp + wifi + a Bluetooth device.

Windows 8 to manage your mobile broadband use for you
    By Peter Bright
Windows 8 will contain built-in support for mobile broadband devices and smarter use of metered Internet connections, as detailed in the lastest post on Microsoft's Building Windows 8 blog.
Most 3G mobile broadband connections are subject to usage limits, and keeping track of data usage at the moment normally means running an application from the mobile operator, or even checking on their website. Windows 8 will have its own usage counters so that users can keep track of how much data they've burned through over the current billing cycle.
Windows 8's faster Wi-Fi connectivity, with hot spots being found and connected to in under a second, and its new support for Wi-Fi hotspots that use authentication portals. Instead of having to open a browser to enter a username and password, it will be possible to type credentials directly into Windows itself.
    How to view error message:
From Control Panel-> Admin. Tools-> Event Viewer-> Windows logs:
Check Application and System Folders for Red highlit messages. Note that you can right-click clear these log folders.
    Memtest
This is a step by step guide with audio and video to explain how to use memtest to see if your memory is defect:
Another thing to add is that some errors will not be found on the first pass, best to do at least 3 passes.
    http://www2.corsair.com/training/how_to_memtest/
Memory that "seems" to work in OS X (Lion, ML and earlier) but fails and does show errors with Windows and shows up in memtest - so don't trust your RAM just because it seems okay.

  • MacBook - Safe to use on your Lap?

I received an interesting comment from Apple's tech support by two seperate reps regarding the incredible heat issues of my MacBook, they said "The MacBook is a notebook and you aren't supposed to use it on your lap, that is why it's called a notebook not a laptop."
What gives? Is the MacBook a laptop? Do people use this thing on their lap and just tolerate the tremedous heat/burns?

I received an interesting comment from Apple's tech
support by two seperate reps regarding the incredible
heat issues of my MacBook, they said "The MacBook is
a notebook and you aren't supposed to use it on your
lap, that is why it's called a notebook not a
    laptop."
This is Apples response to try to convince customers that some how notebooks were never intended to be used in a lap which is so much bull.
The MacBook heat issue is a design flaw pure and simple. My iBook G4 sits on my lap as I type this and it is perfectly fine. I tried the MacBook for two hours and I could not believe how hot it was in my lap.
I felt like Apple was trying to burn me or teach me not to use a computer. I measured 110F while idle and 113F while barely doing anything under the MacBook. If my desktop was that hot on my table or desk I would take it back too.
Apple moved to Intel as the G5 was too hot for notebooks. As far as I am concerned the Intel is to hot too. People that use a notebook in their lap will find the MacBook is a poor choice. I did. It also appears that Apple has no plans to fix the heat issue based on their customer service response so far.

  • Is it safe to use an 85watt adapter from a 2006, 17" macbook pro on a late 2011 15" macbook pro?

Hi. My question is pretty much as the heading says :
Is it safe to use an 85watt adapter from a 2006, 17" macbook pro on a late 2011 15" macbook pro?
As far as I can tell from googling and searching around, it does appear that it is safe to do so.
    Specifically this page
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2346
But I just wanted to double-check for confirmation that it is indeed safe to use the adapter from such an old mbook pro in a newer one.
    The wattage is the same.
I wish to do so as I prefer the T-connector, and my older adapter has a much longer extension cord on it.
If not I may order another one from ebay.
Any idea how to check that an adapter from ebay is a true / legitimate / authentic apple adapter?
    Thanks for your help.

    Yes.
I recommend you buy one directly from Apple. There are many counterfeit power adapters on the market that could damage your MacBook Pro or potentially cause a fire.
Any idea how to check that an adapter from ebay is a true / legitimate / authentic apple adapter?
Nearly all of them are, even if the seller insists it is "genuine OEM". Legitimate adapters from eBay are likely to be used, not new. There is nothing wrong with used, as long as you know what you're getting.
Identifying a counterfeit is possible only through close examination.

  • Is It Safe to use an old Disk Utility on a new OS HD?

Hi - Maybe I'm too concerned about this but I need to calm the obsessive-compulsive within.
I'm in the habit of verifying permissions on my 10.4.9 system (G5) via Disk Utility (version 10.5.6) before and after every install or update. On occasion I've also hit "Repair Permissions" but I know that the only way to really do an effective job of "repairing" is by running Disk Ut from a drive or disc separate from the drive being repaired.
    Now...
I have an external HD with Panther on it...and it has Panther's version of DU on it (10.4.2). I want to use the Panther version of Disk Utility to Repair Permissions on a drive with Tiger (10.4.9) on it. Is this safe? I don't want ANYTHING to be harmed. Is it safe?
    Expert input appreciated.
    D2

I know that the only way to really do an effective job of "repairing" is by running Disk Ut from a drive or disc separate from the drive being repaired
You can repair permissions from the same hard disk, but you can't repair the hard disk except from Disk Utility in your install disk.
    Two different repairs!
So therefore no need to use the Panther version of Disk Utility to Repair Permissions on a drive with Tiger (10.4.9), BUT
Panther's version of DU on it (10.4.2) - 10.4.2 is Tiger. Panther was 10.3.x.
Put it this way: you can safely repair the hard disk of your Mac with the Disk Utility of the install disk that came with your Mac, but not from any other.
If that wasn't clear, post back!

I am still having trouble with my iMac since I last spoke with you guys about 2 weeks ago. Sorry to take so long to get back to you (things were a little wonky around here). Anyway, I did try running in Safe Mode, as Bob suggested but I continued to have the same problems. Strangely, the original message did not reappear, and has not popped up since the first time I wrote about it. However, the computer is still showing all the same problems. It is running slow, stalling in the middle of games, Youtube etc. I'm getting really sick of seeing that spinning color wheel every time I turn it on. Any advice you can give will be greatly appreciated & thank you all for all the tips and advice with my first posting.

Freeing Up Space on The Hard Drive
      1. See Lion/Mountain Lion's Storage Display.
      2. You can remove data from your Home folder except for the /Home/Library/ folder.
      3. Visit The XLab FAQs and read the FAQ on freeing up space on your hard drive.
      4. Also see Freeing space on your Mac OS X startup disk.
      5. See Where did my Disk Space go?.
      6. See The Storage Display.
You must Empty the Trash in order to recover the space they occupied on the hard drive.
You should consider replacing the drive with a larger one. Check out OWC for drives, tutorials, and toolkits.
Try using OmniDiskSweeper 1.8 or GrandPerspective to search your drive for large files and where they are located.

  • HT5278 If ios 5.1.1 on iPad 1 is no longer supported, is the device safe to use for credit card payments?

Hi All, anyone, or just helpful users,
If ios 5.1.1 on iPad 1 is no longer supported, is the device safe to use for credit card payments?
I know the reasons why Apple no longer update IOS for Ipad 1.
Due to end of life support, no bug fixes for older apps and constant vulnerabilities being exploited, does this now make the device insecure and vulnerable?  either information stored on the device or (especially) when making credit card payments through Safari, etc.
    Thanks in advance,

I would say your biggest issue isn't as much your operating system as it is the network you use your device on. For example the most secure device in the world can be used at McDonalds open wifi and have its info intercepted....and it's not your device's fault rather the connection. Any security program is only as good as its weakest component.
THe iOS operating systems are still very secure because they are highly resistent to viruses and malware....but a user can still click on that 'you won a million dollars' link in an e-mail and hand their personal info over to a hacker.
If you feel you can no longer trust it, then stop using it. But I would say a user's internet connection and behavior are larger security vulnerabilities than any device.

Apple encourages you to disable java (not javascript) on OS X Leopard because it's currently causing problems with websites which exploit that bug the outdated java versions have, to control your computer, that is a trojan.
It isn't an updated java version for 10.5. I have got the same problem so I am thinking in buying a 10.6 OS X version which currently has an updated security 'patch' for java.
