If your question is regarding the safety of running Windows on your system via Fusion, this is not an issue.  When you run Windows via virtualization (Fusion, Parallels, VirtualBox), it does not have the ability to install any sort of malware or virus in OS X.
That's not the main threat with virtualizers. Many VMs allow you to designate folders on your Mac that are shared so that both Mac and Windows apps can open the same folder of docs. This is very useful in passing documents between Mac and Windows. But if your Windows virtual machine gets one of those viruses that likes to wipe out folders, it could potentially corrupt or wipe out the files in folders shared with the Mac side. For example you would never want to give a Windows virtual machine access to your Mac user library or system files. If you must share a Mac folder with Windows, try to keep the scope of it limited and contained. While the Windows malware would not be able to run on Mac OS X, it would not be necessary for it to, if a poorly configured virtual machine allows it to write over folders shared with the Mac and trash Mac files in the process.
The other possible threat to your Mac is that many virtualizers install kernel extensions. This is not malware, but that kind of software operates at such a low level that if it is buggy, it could destabilize your Mac system. It's a good idea to check both VM reviews and their support forums to make sure the VM you choose to use is known to be stable. Most are, but sometimes, with a major upgrade, the .0 version may have bugs that need a .1 update to fix them, just as it is with Mac OS X itself.

First, you can install Microsoft's Security Essentials in the Win 7 VM and keep it up-to-date. Second, you can turn off Sharing in Fusion's System Settings to keep the VM environment separate from your Mac. Third, you can look into Sophos Anti-Virus http://www.sophos.com/en-us/products/free-tools/sophos-antivirus-for-mac-home-ed ition/download.aspx for the Mac host.

  • Shut down issue on 27" iMac running Windows XP using VMWare Fusion 3

I'm running Windows XP on a 27" iMac using VMWare Fusion 3. When I try to shut down the Mac system without using Windows, a dark (not black) screen covers the screen from top to bottom and presents me with a screen, stating in multiple languages that I must press the power button for 5 seconds and then restart the Mac. Then the iMac will close normally.
However, if I run both the Mac system and Windows, and then close Windows, VMFWare Fusion 3, followed by the Mac system, the iMac shouts down normally.
What's going on? Has anyone else experienced this? Does anyone have a solution?

I run XP under Fusion 3 and have not seen this issue. What you are getting is a Kernel Panic. There should be more information in your console logs about the reason.
Here is some info on KPs to help you.

  • I use VMware Fusion, will it still work if I upgrade to Lion

I use VMware Fusion to use Quicken in Windows.  Just want to be sure before doing the upgrade to Lion that it will still work?  Thanks in advance.

You have to check with VMFusion, but my advice is to wait a few more months so the bugs are completely worked out if your very dependent upon things working.
    I run Fusion myself.

  • Does VMWare Fusion work with Lion

Does VMWare Fusion work with Lion?

After upgrading to Lion, I was experiencing significant problems with my MacBook Pro waking from sleep.  It would present me with the screen asking for my password and as soon as I typed into the field the screen would blank.  Almost like a badly done game.
In an effort to address this, I re-installed VMWare Fusion.  The problem has not presented itself since, and it was happening on almost every wake-from-sleep.
Take this as what it is -- a one-time anecdotal report.  But if you're experiencing issues after upgrading to Lion and you have Fusion, try just re-installing Fusion.  It doesn't take long and it doesn't impact your VMs (I'd shut them down before the re-install, but that's probably not a requirement).

  • How can I use LDAP searching from OSX Lion Server to Mozilla Thunderbird?

How can I use LDAP searching from OSX Lion Server to Mozilla Thunderbird?  We have a super awesome contacts server that works great for our Mac users.  About 30% of our company are on PCs, and I would like to use the Mozilla Thunderbird mail client for them.  I see that in Thunderbird I can set up LDAP searching, and would like to have this feature point to our contacts server.  I've tried several different settings, and looked all over the web, but could not find the proper way to configure this.  Does anyone know if this can be done, or if not, would have a better suggestion?  Thank you for your time!!

A dialog box will launch asking where to install the cert since your configuring a vpn I would put the certificate it in system.

  • Using VMWare Fusion for playing games

Hi all and I hope you can help.
I have a recent 17" MBP with 2GB of RAM and a Core 2 Duo and I am trying to get some decent game software running on it. To do this I have installed VMWare Fusion, XP Pro and Crysis.
My problem is, I can get the game to run but it is VERY choppy and unplayable.
I have tried various virtual settings, including using 1 and 2 processors, 512mb to 1.5gb RAM but never getting it to run properly.
I am not trying to run it full screen or anywhere near high settings and have allowed the game to scan the hardware to find it's optimal settings and still no luck.
I know Crysis is quite a heavy load but with the hardware in an MBP it should be able to run it without many problems.
Am I being too optimistic trying to run Crysis or are there a set of parameters that are optimised for doing this?

VMWare will also allow you to virtualize a boot camp partition.
The problem with virtualization and gaming is that, while you get direct CPU access and protected memory access, you do not get video access - so there is absolutely no video acceleration, it's all emulated or translated by the virtualizer.
You'll see a very minor CPU hit on anything that just using processor power or takes a lot of data (so long as you have enough physical RAM, and have enough RAM allocated to the virtual machine, to prevent disk swapping), but anything that needs video acceleration will suffer tremendously if it's virtualized.
In general, anything more than Solitare or Minesweeper, and you will want to use Bootcamp if there is no Mac OS X native version of the game (hooray for Blizzard, and all you other mac-native developers). I know the latest versions of VMWare and Parrallels all say they have new DirectX support, and Crossover has a version out just for gaming, but you'll disappoint yourself if you think these will do much more than just show the splash screen and a slide show for most games.
The good news is more game companies are starting to take Mac OS X seriously, and technologies such as Cider are helping developers port their code easier. But it's a long road, and the Macintosh has notoriously been spotty for gaming.

  • Using Pro/E on a Mac using VMWare Fusion or BootCamp

    Hi
    I have a MacBook Pro:
    Processor:2.4GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
    Memory: 4 GB 1067 Mhz DDR3
And recently for uni I have had to find a way to get Pro Engineer, a CAD program, running on my Mac. My solution was to buy VMWare Fusion and instal Windows 7 on my Mac so I could then run the CAD program. Once I got that done windows was running well however once I got Pro Engineer installed it was incredibly slow and pretty much unusable.
My question is has anyone got any experience with running this program on a similar machine and can help me solve this problem so I can run the program? Should I use bootcamp instead of VMWare? Would it make a difference?
    Thanks

Yes, I would definitely recommend setting up BootCamp for this - it's relatively painless. (It can create a new partition in the unused space on your OS X disk without erasing the disk.) The BootCamp Assistant has detailed instructions on how to go about setting up a partition and installing Windows on it, but the gist of it is that you have the BootCamp Assistant create a partition for you, then you boot from your Windows install disc and install Windows on that partition. When you've booted into Windows for the first time, pop in your OS 10.6 install disc, and it will install Apple's hardware drivers and utilities for Windows. If you got 10.6 shortly after it came out, the drivers will be version 3.0 for Windows Vista - you'll need to download version BootCamp 3.1 from the Apple support site to ensure full support for Windows 7. (If you have a newer copy of 10.6, it might have the new drivers already - I don't know, as I have an older one.)
I would, however, also recommend keeping VMWare Fusion (assuming you've already paid for it). Once Windows is set up in BootCamp, you can go into Fusion and create a virtual machine that's mapped to it (so you can also use your BootCamp installation as a virtual machine in your Mac if you don't need the full performance of booting into it natively). It should be fairly obvious how to do that - it will probably prompt you automatically. The virtualization also allows for as many different machines with as many OS's as you want - I'm running every version of Windows I've ever had in Parallels, plus a number of free OS's I'm trying out (BSD, Linux, Solaris). In short, it's a good thing to have.

  • I no longer want to use vmware fusion to run my windows session, can I use boot camp to launch my vmware windows install or do I have to start again with a brand new installation?

    Hi,
I would like to know if I'm able to use my current VMWare windows installation through Boot Camp, I don't want to use fusion anymore but I'm hoping there's a way to set up boot camp and not have to re-install windows again, if anyone could let me know that would be great

  • How do I activate Windows 8 using vmware fusion on my MacBook Pro?

I have a MacBook pro and there are a few Windows programs that I need to run. So I purchased VMWARE Fusion 5 and Windows 8 pro. I installed both with no issues except now I'm being prompted to activate windows. When I go to activate it with the product key, it says that the product key is only able to be used for upgrading, but not a clean install. I'm not sure what I need to do now. Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Yes as with Windows 7 if you used a Upgrade Win 7 disc it won't WANT To Activate and to get around it you do another install of Win 7 over the top of the original Win 7 install and it make it look like you are Upgrading and allows you to use an Upgrade key.
MS really screwed up with Win 8. There really isn't any FULL VERSION Windows 8 install DVDs. They are all Upgrade DVDs no matter how much you pay for it. So to do a Clean install, on real hardware or in a Virtual Machine, you have to jump through some hoops.

  • Is is Safe to Using VMWare to Run Windows when Online?

I am new to VMware fusion, prior to using Virtualisation software to run Windows on my Mac I used Boot Camp. I never configured that installation of Windows to go online as I didn't want the headache of having to deal with virus protection, firewalls, security settings, etc, etc. In fact, I use to always unplug the network cable just to be absolutely certain.
Now that I am running VMware Fusion I still remove the network cable before starting it up it as I fear the vulnerability of using Windows online will open up my system to attack.
But I am unsure if it is necessary for me to be so careful. Is my Mac already protected by some insulating aspect of VMware?
Or should I continue to unplug the network cable when starting up Windows in VMware?
    Thanks.

While I use Parallels instead of VMWare. I do have a suggestion. You may be able to "virtually" unplug the cable. What I mean by that is, in Parallels there is an option to disable the network adapter of a specific virtual machine. Since Parallels and VMWare are similar, there may be a similar option in VMWare.
The advantage of this? You don't have to give up network access to your Mac, you just deny it to Windows.
In Parallels, this option is in the settings for an individual virtual machine, so if I have two different disk images with Windows systems on them, I could go into each one's settings and set one's virtual network adapter to be enabled, and the other one to be disabled.
I came across this when I wanted to run Windows on my Mac laptop while I was connected to the Internet away from home. Looking through the settings I realized that I could leave my Mac on the network while shutting off access to the Internet within the virtual machine. If I ever want to go online with Windows, like downloading updates, I just wait until I'm home on my own firewalled network, and flip the switch to enable the network adapter on that Windows virtual machine, and disable it again when I'm done.
Hopefully VMWare has that ability for you too.

  • How can I run 2 Mac Systems on an iMac using VMWare Fusion

    Hello,
    - I'm using an iMac, system 10.10.2.
    - I bought VMWare Fusion 7.1.1.
I would like to use VMWare on my iMac (Yosemite) and run another Mac OS (10.7.5) in parallel by using VMWare. I have no idea how to do this, I don't even know if it's even possible.
The operating systeme 10.7.5 is installed on another Mac of mine (a Mac Book Air). I made a carbon copy of the whole operating system.
My aim is to be able to jump from my iMac (running OS 10.10.2 with VMWare Fusion installed) to a virtual Mac OS 10.7.5 (the carbon copy of my MacBookAir)
    Can anyone help?
    Thank you very much.

Some searching at the VMware Fusion site should provide you with an answer.

While starting up VMware Fusion (windows 7), my bluetooth keyboard is getting disconnected. I have OSX lion 10.8.3; I-Mac. What can I do to avoid that ? (My bluetooth mouse is functioning OK)

Hi All, thank you for you suggestions.  I have been unable to find any website for the maker, but have looked at several Thai/cambodian sites incl <http://www.buycoms.com/Article/8435/index.asp>  which mentions the keyboard being suitable for tablet or windows.  No mention of iMac!  although the box is branded to indicate Mac compatable.
I'm thinking that maybe it just will not pair with an iMac.
Ill keep looking for the maker website, which might come on later in the future? maybe?
    thanks again.

  • Prefered Linux version (VMWare Fusion - Mac - OSX)

I read in the thread about a mac version, there there is no osx version on the horizon, so my next option to run this, would be to install some flavor of Linux under VMWare and access it that way.
What Linux version would folks recommend? I don't normally run Linux at home (the old Fedora Core 6 on a Dell doesn't count). I currently have VMWare Fusion (on an iMac) installed to run some windows apps. I guess I am looking for ease of installation and maintenance, as well as a good fit with Oracle XE.
My target application is to do APEX development for some home projects and would prefer to not use the systems at work.

I like CentOS as well (we are using it at work) - but my favorite is Ubuntu.
I have so far installed the 11gR2 XE on RH 5.5 and Ubuntu 10.04 (both 64bit) and had no problems so far. I have been running 10gR2 XE on my 32bit Ubuntu 10.04 laptop for quite some time with no issues for APEX development.
For Ubuntu 64bit installation, there is already help available in various blogs on Internet and a thread on OTN.
