Is it still impossible to run a GTX 570 with a Mac Pro under Lion

I have the GTX 285 Mac Edition and it's running fine.
Anyway, meanwhile I'm searching for a more powerful graphic card, e.g. the GTX 570.
The premise is, that it will run with Lion and bootcamp Win7 ... without, or very less, hackintosh steps.
Any ideas or suggestions?

Thanks for the information. My last experience was with VMWare 1 and I don't think this functionality was available then. I downloaded today version 4 and at this point I am running Win 7 within MacOS. Haven't tried rebooting to my bootcamp partition yet or printing or sharing, etc. If it works as advertised though I should be a happy camper.
The import option doesn't strike me as a good one for my situation. I have 500GB on my MBP and 120 GB allocated to my windows bootcamp partition. If I do the import option with VMWare I'd basically need another 120 GB of the total space and then I'd have two unsynchronized windows disks, one under bootcamp and the other under VMWare.
Running VMWare as a Mac application I can see it's a bit slower than running in bootcamp, but I expected that.
This is exciting stuff and I appreciate you taking the time to enlighten me.

I have a Mac Pro using Lion, with a SSD for system. Restored drive from backup. Now logon password doesn't work. Account password still works. Changing password in user group preferences no longer works to change logon password.

If you redirect Accounts to another location (not on the Boot Drive) you need to direct them back there again after a restore.
SystemPreferences > Accounts/User&Groups > ...
... Unlock the lock, then hold down Control as you click on an Account to get access to the Advanced Options pane.

As an alternative, though not an ideal FCS box, the Intel iMacs should be fine, and should fit into the same budget range as the MacBooks.
For serious FCP work, I wouldn't recommend an iMac, but for the purposes you've outlined, it should be acceptable, for the most part.
EDIT: My comment above is in reply to your comment about school purchases, not your original post about carrying around two laptops.

Looking for some advice on getting rid of our Windows domain controller (DHCP server, AD, etc.) in favour of a Mac Server (which we own). Is it possible to run a Windows domain with a Mac Server?

Snow Leopard Server (10.6) and earlier included Samba which supported acting as an NT Domain Controller (this pre-dates Active Directory). Lion (10.7) and later as standard can no longer act as an NT Domain Controller nor can they act as an Active Directory server.
So the short answer is no.
Theoretically you could port Samba4 to a Mac and Samba4 can act as an Active Directory server. In reality this is not going to be easy but is theoretically possible.
An easier option might be to run a copy of Linux (e.g. Ubuntu) in a virtual machine e.g. using VirtualBox and then run Samba4 in that and configure it to act as and Active Directory server. Then you could connect the Mac side to the Samba4 Active Directory server. This approach would use all Mac hardware, and not have any extra costs of licenses to buy and as far as all the rest of the network is concerned would be a standard Active Directory server environment.

You cannot have a extended desktop using a splitter. All that does is mirror the pair attached to the splitter.
You can do this however using a Matrox DualHead2Go.
Other solution would be to attach one monitor to your video out as you do the splitter and attach the other via USB (assuming the adapter supports the monitor's resolution).

Is it possible to put the new nVidia GTX 480 in the Mac Pro

I'm planning on creating the ultimate gaming machine, but also want the best operating system. So I have decided that my next computer will be the Mac Pro and will have the new nVidia GTX 480 (if it works). The Windows partition would be used for heavy gaming with DX 11 and PhysX technology. While on the OSX partition I could use the greatest operating system, to do general things like Movie Making, Picture Editing, Web Surfing, Emailing etc.
So all in all, is it possible to install a GTX 480 on OSX? I know it'll work with the windows partition, but not sure about OSX. I'm also unsure about the hardware side of things, but that's why I'm asking!
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

If you don't need dual processor, PC with 980X Gulftown makes sense.
Forget over clocking a Mac, but if you need dual processor, the Mac Pro makes sense but expect to pay. Otherwise, take a look at

Apple has not had good Nvidia drivers. And right now there are two 6-pin, and you need 6 + 8 and stick with Windows 7 and ability to do SLI. I laugh when people talk about "windoz" (rude) being somehow less or 'inferior' having seen the best - and worst - of both (never got caught up in 95/98/NT/XP so spoiled by only knowing Vista/7). I still think 10.6 hasn't quite caught up to 7 in areas that really matter, like threading, multicore, efficient use of memory.
Forget using more than one, Apple likes graphic cards that are low power, low end, and only supporting one high end card.
The GTX 480 @ $499, and if Apple offered it, it would be $549 or more (Apple 'tax' for smaller market and having to do their own drivers). And it would be much later before optimized drivers (maybe next year this time at best).
While you can go water and add custom fans and cooling, the Mac is much more of a "closed" box in many ways beyond RAM and hard drives and +very limited+ selection of graphics.
That really is my honest assessment.
The place where Mac Pro is easier, you can install 32-64GB RAM without trouble and not have to worry about compatibility or PSU issues. I'm always surprised by all the memory testing and supported and problems PC owners go through (I don't think Cruical Ballistix gets enough credit).
DX11 will still take time. Adobe showed how GPGPU/CUDA could benefit, but Apple and Adobe apps have always tended to favor ATI which is just beginning to get into OpenCL technology ... and the 5000 series may find Nvidia Fermi, while it took longer, runs hot and power requirement, could be better poised down the road too.
A single socket Mac Pro 3.3GHz or even stock (same as 920) will do the job you want.

Need to run 3 DVI Displays from my Mac Pro

I have a 30 inch Display (the first gen, with the DVI connector), an old 23 inch Cinema Display (easel stand), and a 17 inch flat screen display (easel stand). I'd like to hook up all 3 to a Mac Pro. Does anyone have an idea of what graphic cards I might need to do this? I'm currently running all 3 displays on my G5, but I assume those graphic cards won't work in a Mac Pro. Thanks very much.

Well, I guess, you’re talking about one of the the 2009 Quad-Core Mac Pro’s...?
This one comes with the NVIDIA GT 120... (One Mini Display Port / One DVI Port...)

I have a 2010 Mac Pro that I just bought. It currently has an ATI Radeon 5770 graphics card with 1GB DDR5 vram. I am looking to buyt the best gaming card I can buy for this machine. I am running Windows 7 installed with bootcamp for gaming. Due to power supply restrictions and possibly other hardware restrictions of Cards and the Mac Pro, I need input on which cards will work. I would like to use the NVidia GTX 780, 690, or ATI Radeon 7970. Or other?

It seems the warranty is no longer valid after you do any kind of power modification to Apple hardware, so I am not recommending this merely sharing some knowledge. I spent some time researching and testing solutions before I settled on the following to get the GTX 780 running in both OSX 10.8.4 and Windows 7 64 on a 2010 Mac Pro.
Avoid 6-8 pin adapters these are a bad fix, you might get enough power to start the machine but as soon as you start any serious use of the GPU the power supply will shut off because of the demand for more power than it can safely provide.
WARNING if you don't understand how this is done then don't attempt to do it. Anyone who understands how the power system operates should have no problem understanding and performing this.
Many people believe an external supply is the only solution, however if you are only adding one card then there is a simple solution if you can bare a small compromise.
I don't really use optical drives and when I need to I have external usb versions. So i removed the optical drive and made a wiring harness which would tap off the required rails from the optical drive power cable. This harness feeds the 6-pin input connector on the GTX 780. The two 6-pin cables from the Mac Pro backplane then feed the dual 6-pin to 8-pin adapter which ships with the GTX 780 which in turn plugs into the 8-pin connector on the GTX 780.
Once this is done the power requirements don't seem to exceed the Mac Pro power supply limits and all those CUDA cores can get busy. The fan noise is low even when pushed, the temperature has not exceeded what I would expect and the performance increase is excellent.
Of course anyone wanting an SLI based power solution will probably need to add a power supply, of the research I did the internal variants seemed the way to go, having a much cleaner and safer install.

I just got an old Imacon Photo scanner, which uses the software "flexcolor 4.0.4 mac". The latest mac OS the software is compatible with would be 10.5.x (leopard).
I was wondering, how I could get the scanner going with my set-up:
My primary mac is a macbook pro (10.9.4), which is way to modern for the mentioned software. When buying the scanner it came with a mac g4 tower, which has an OS (10.4.11) that is able to run the software. I have no screen for the tower, though.
I was thinking about the following solutions:
1. Get parallels on my macbook pro, and then run the software with leopard. The tricky part is the fact that the only connection to the scanner is with a scsi cabel, and there is no scsi card in my macbook pro.
2. Use the mac g4 tower with the scanner (which works), and then use the macbook pro as a monitor, if that is possible?
3. The easy solution, buy a screen for the mac g4 tower, and only run the scanner through that. (but it is slow)

NVidia GeForce 8800 GT *and* GeForce GTX 285 in a Mac Pro?

Hi,
my Mac Pro came with an nVidia GeForce 8800 GT, and I've now bought an extra GeForce GTX 285 Mac Edition (for the Compute Level 1.3 double precision floating point capability in CUDA).
(Everything bought from the Mac Store)
I wasn't aware that I was expected to throw away the GeForce 8800 GT , what with the other three PCI-e slots being free.
The GTX 285 (max requirement: 204 W) requires two extra PCI-e power connectors. The 8800 GT (max: 110 W) uses one. There are only two available from the motherboard though.
So, *although I realize this isn't supported*, has anyone else managed to scrounge some current from somewhere else on the motherboard?
I'm only using one hard drive and one optical drive and no other PCI-e cards. Surely the power supply (around 1000 W ?) can supply the extra?
Does anyone know how much current the PCI-e extra power connectors are rated for?

Want to run two 30" cinema displays from Mac Pro

I'm running Avid Media Composer software to edit a film that I made, and I would like to run (if possible) two Apple 30" cinema displays next to each other off of my Mac Pro (the computer was purchased at end of 2009). While editing with Avid software, I like to spread out my work and bins in able to see everything, and strange as it may sound, I'd like more room than one 30" display can provide. Currently, I have one Apple 30" Cinema display in use, and could purchase another large display if I can find out-- definitively, if my Mac Pro computer will be able to handle it and power it effectively. I realize that Apple doesn't sell the 30" displays anymore, but I saw a few relatively inexpensive ones available on Craigslist recently.
The second monitor that I'm using now is a much older (non-Mac) monitor (and smaller) and the resolutions don't match the high resolution of my single Apple 30" display. So, my reason for wanting a second, larger display are twofold... 1) to see more of my work, and 2) to get the highest resolutions to match (2560x).
The ports on the back of the Mac Pro don't look like they will support the use of a second 30" display, just one. Does anyone have any suggestions?
Do I need to purchase another video card to run a second 30" Apple display? If so, which ones are best/do you suggest?
Do I need to upgrade my processing speed (get a faster processor) to run two large, high-rez monitors?

If it has two DVI ports, just plug in the second display with an additional Dual-Link DVI cable -- the card can run both displays without issue.
If it has one DVI and one other type, Exactly which display card do you have installed?
