Is it the Drive or something else?

Thanks in advance for any advice...
My wife's iMac G5 serial number is in the range of those noted here:
http://www.apple.com/support/imac/repairextensionprogram/
but, the computer does not exhibit video problems.
Instead, inexplicably, the hard drive crashed in February for no reason it seemed; so I reformatted (zeroing all data); put everything back together manually, totally fresh - and things were going great until a few days ago - the same thing - the drive is so messed up not even Disk Warrior can repair it - and this happened out of nowhere in the sense that only Mail, Safari, and iPhoto had been used in that time (nothing fancy).
I am told that likely, the drive has blocks that are bad or going bad. My questions are:
Should I simply replace the drive?
- or -
Could the problem be the logic board,
power supply, etc.?
Of course, the warranty expired one month ago. I am really frustrated - but not nearly as frustrated as I'll be if I swap out the drive and it happens again...
Please help!
iMac G5   Mac OS X (10.4.5)

Tech Tool Pro is a good tool for checking and fixing hard drive problems. It will take a while to run, but it will find almost everything that is there to find.
As far as memory tests go, sometimes the Apple test is not as thorough as one would like it to be. Memtest is a free command line memory tester and Rember is the GUI version. Run them and see what they can come up with.
I suggest a few other things. If you don't already have one, get an external FireWire drive and a cloning utility like SuperDuper or the donationware Carbon Copy Cloner. That way, you can make an exact and bootable copy of your internal hard drive to work from if the internal fails. I use SuperDuper mainly because the updates were in place to have it be Tiger compatible on the release date where CCC took a while to work with Tiger. They both work very well.
What brand memory do you have installed?

That is so dumb...Apple is the best and most techinological company IN THE WORLD and they don't have the time to invent something like that? HUH? All they are worried about is making the "Worlds best Phone" and they can't take the time out to help their users or anybody that has their products. All they have is "Find mt Iphone" Well they should step up and do something else to help people like me out. Find a way to turn it on and you can find it or find a way to turn it on remotely.

  • Black macbook: not sure if its the fan, or something else (noise)

I got this macbook is september. I had no issues with it, when suddenly it began making noises. Now, I'm a gadget-blog reader, so I've been aware of Macbooks making the "moooo" sound from the fan; however, I'm not sure if my noise is the fan or something else. I get more of a "whrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr" noise.
    1) I have the macbook plugged in
    2) I leave it on all the time
    3) It began to hear the "whrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr" when:
    a) activate visualizer in iTUNES
    b) download shows off iTUNES
    c) have a bunch of windows open and the 512MB Memory is struggling to access each window, if I say, I want to close them.
Considering this is the uncrashable, flexible, awesome OSX, and should be pesk-free, like say WINXP...I would expect such problems to not exist on the glossy OSX.
I'm currently studying abroad in the United Kingdom. I bought this macbook in San Francisco just before I left. I have plenty of warranty left. Is this a big issue? It annoys the **** out of me. None of the macbooks demoed in the store had this problem. So in a way, this is false advertising, since I'm reading that a lot of people have this noise issue.
I've fully updated my firmwares with software updater, but I still get the noise. So I'm at situation that needs some outside help as to what I should do.
    Thanks.

hard to say if it is serious or not. have you tried resetting the pmu? http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=303319 that could very well help the matter.

Can I airplay a movie from safari on my MacBook to Apple TV and still use the computer for something else at the same time?

    Hi frogjt,
Welcome to the Apple Support Communities!
Great question! You can absolutely do this in OS X 10.9. The attached article explains how the process of using AirPlay with Apple TV to create a second display. Also, towards the bottom of the article there are instructions on how to set your Displays preferences on the computer to make sure the TV and MacBook Pro displays are set up the way you want them to be.

When creating a fillable form and saving it as a pdf, the default color of the data fields is a light blue. How do I change the color to something else that will copy better, e.g. a light yellow?

It's probably the fields highlight color of the application, which you can change via Edit - Preferences - Forms.

  • Using the display on something else than a computer

Is there any way to use the 20-inch Cinema Display on something else than a computer? Such as using it as an external monitor for my HD camera? I'm shooting a short film, and I was wondering if such a display could serve as a video assist.
    Thanks.

Apple displays aren't much use for any other purpose besides computer monitors. You can use add-on hardware to make them more flexible, but the add-on is so expensive you could almost buy another monitor.

  • Two possibly unrelated questions - Hard Drive and something else.

Sorry I only have symptoms not specifics at this point. I have an intel core duo mac mini, running 10.5.6, with 4 gigs of ram. I have a couple of issues that may be unrelated: A possible Hard drive issue and another strange issue. I don't know if there are related but since I may have to go through the hassle of cracking open my mini I thought I would ask.
First issue when I stream video over the internet sometimes and only sometimes my machine will suddenly restart, no shutdown, no prompts, just instantaneously restart, other times it will stream hours of video without issue. This issue has plagued me since 10.4 and all subsequent upgrades.
Second issue is what I believe is a hard drive failure, but I'm not sure and I don't want to buy/replace it if that's not the issue. I updated to 10.5.6 a few months ago and was running with no issues although lately it has been getting slower. Last week my parents came over to watch "24" online so after working on my computer all morning I restarted my machine thinking it would stream better, upon restart it would get to the large apple with the spinning graphic and hang up, then about after a minute in it would simply power off. Confused I restarted with the same results. I tried this probably 10 times with the same result. Checked all the cables, etc. nothing. so next I booted into the Leopard Installer and ran disk utility. At first the hard drive didn't show up in the left column so I quit disk utility and launched startup disk, again no hard drive, then I re-launched disk utility - now it showed up. I ran repair disk since repair permissions was greyyed out. It came back with errors saying disk couldn't be repaired. Sorry the only error message I recall is a damaged catalog B-tree. So I restarted and for the first time in 10 hours my machine actually restarted and everything came back. From here I backed up everything important. Since then it has restarted 3 times will no issues, other than running a little slower than usual. So last night I ran Disk Warrior and receive the error message. " Could not rebuild due to a disk malfunction. A disk malfunction is a failure of or damage to any mechanical component of the disk device or any component connected to it. Since I had disk warrior in there I checked the hardware test option where it checks the S.M.A.R.T. something or another, sorry for the choice of words I've never done that, and it returned saying the drive was fine. So here I am a bit confused if it's the hard drive or another issue any ideas.

    Hi daredman01-
Could the unit simply be overheating? Have you vacuumed out the air vent that rns along the bottom edge of the mini?
Good job getting things backed up. How full is the hard drive?
    Luck-

  • Computer Running Slow... what should I do? is it the version or something else?

I have a Mac Book, Mac OS X , Version 10.5.8 that is running very slow. I am assuming I need to save my files to an external hard drive, clean it up and then purchase and buy a new version.  Leopard? or something? Can anyone give me advice? I don't know what to do, but it's just so slow and hard to do anything. The colored wheel just spins and often I get the box that pops up that the program closed because of an error.
    Thanks!

Here are two FAQ's to look over, one on addressing the colored wheel and one on steps to take to improve performance.

  • My iPad won't open itunes. I have software update iOS 7.1.1 trying to download for days. Is this the problem or something else?

My iPad  won't open itunes. Wifi ok safari working. Software update trying to download for days 7.1.1. Is this the problem? How to fix?

If Safari is working otherwise and you can log onto other websites, try clearing Safari and reset your iPad. That might help with the Twitter app as well.
    Settings>Safari>Clear Cookies and Data.
Reset the iPad by holding down on the sleep and home buttons at the same time for about 10-15 seconds until the Apple Logo appears - ignore the red slider if it appears on the screen - let go of the buttons. Let the iPad start up.

  • Is it the MB or something else?

Okay here we go. I bought an MSI K7N2 Delta and was running Patriot 512MB PC3200 Low Density memory with a AMD 1.7, Windows XP. Everything has been working fine. I finally upgraded to an AMD 3.2, but now I seem to crash from games and sometimes go to a blue screen saying memory dump. I spoke with tech support for the memory and ran memtest, everything checked out. Just for giggles I put the 1.7 back in and no crashes. Once everything checked out I put the 3.2 back in and now I am having the same problems. Normally I can run IE and outlook without problems but once a game is loaded or any thing like Norton sysdoc I get that [content edited] dump mem screen. I have the bios set at 200 FSB, but for v core I have let H/W set. Any ideas? I am trying to figure out if this is cpu, mb or oe problems.
    CPU temp running about 108F
    Sys temp about 93F
PC Alert is showing the vcore is running at 1.66, but once again it is set by H/W and 3.3v
The processor is showing that it is running at 2.2

Can you give the model number of your memory, and was it a dual channel pack or is it a single stick. PSD512400 512MB PC3200 400MHz single stick, but chips on both sides
When you mention low density, are you sure you don't mean low latency?  When I spoke to tech support for the memory he said if I had 16 chips on the memory than it was low density.
What are your current timings for the memory in the BIOS set at? Memory timings: by SPD  T-RAS 8    T-RCD 3  T-RP 3  CAS Latency 3
What shows in the BIOS when you set the memory timings to SPD or Auto? see above for by SPD, I haven't tried auto
Are you manually setting the multipliers for the CPU, or are you leaving it on auto?  I have it set to Auto or "by H/W"
Did you initially select optimal default settings or high performance settings? I normally don't I have the system Performance set to Auto and the cpu fsb clock set to 200MHz DRAM voltage is at 2.7 CPU Ration is by H/W
On a sidenote, If we get nowhere with all this and you've tried all available options and suggestions given here without spending any more money, you may want to consider the following advice.

  • I tunes has decided my original music is the soundtrack to something else and won't let me rename

I have a disc of my original music that I created in a studio that itunes thinks is another album, has named it Original London Cast - The Phantom of the Opera...and won't let me re-name it. This is not correct - it is an original soundtrack. When I try to rename - I get the error message
"You do not have sufficient access privileges to rename the item "Original London Cast - The Phantom of the Opera (Disc 2).
    How can I fix this?

Did you check to see if shuffle was turned on?  While playing a song, tap the screen (cover art) to bring up the extended music controls (see image below), then tap the shuffle control until it turns white.

  • Hard drive crash or something else?????

A few months ago my ibook G4 starting acting funny, sometimes I'd turn it on and it would not boot, then I'd try again and it would boot fine. One time I turned it on and instead of booting it stayed at the gray screen and a small picture of a computer with a question mark in the middle came up, a friend of mine said crashed hard drive but the next day I turned it on and it worked fine. It continued to work fine for a while and then about 3 or 4 weeks ago I turned it on and that REALLY loud fan sound started and I couldn't get it to boot past the gray screen with the apple logo. That persisted for about a week and I finally took it into the Genius bar, they declared crashed hard drive and told me to take it to a local store to get my data recovered. Well I was in the middle of moving out of state and didn't have time to go in, so my computer has sat for about 3 weeks untouched. Tonight on a whim I started it up and low and behold it works PERFECTLY! Is there a possibility that it's not the hard drive and something else or is my hard drive just slowly failing, the comp isn't more than 2 and half years old and I only put pictures and music on there, how could it fail already?!? Any insight I would GREATLY appreciate, thanks!

    Hi Krystal Y,
    +how could it fail already?!?+
It's not if but when a drive will fail. Even though it may have 300,000+ hours before failure on average that just means some will fail much sooner and some much later.
There are a few things you can do to further test the drive. Launch Disk Utility (in Applications/Utilities), highlight the drive (upper most in the list) on the left and look at the SMART status at the bottom of the window. If it says Failing believe it. You can also run Apple Hardware Test (on the install disc) but it may just use SMART reporting too.

  • What is a 403 Forbidden error message which I get on firefox, safari and chrome. I don't know if it is the website or something with my mac though everything else works fine.

When trying to log in to crossstitch.com I get this message:
You don't have permission to access /index.php on this server.
Additionally, a 403 Forbidden error was encountered while trying to use an ErrorDocument to handle the request.
    Apache mod_fcgid/2.3.6 mod_auth_passthrough/2.1 mod_bwlimited/1.4 FrontPage/5.0.2.2635 Server at www.crossstitchforum.com Port 80
I googled the error message and don't really understand what it means.
I don't know if it is the website or something else. I am not sure where to check and I don't know how to get in touch with the webmaster. If anyone can help I would appreciate it.

If it is a Firefox add-on, you may be able to disable or remove it here:

  • How can I change the BlackBerry Link Network Drive mapping from Z: to something else?

    Hello,
I generally have a mapping to my NFS server on Z:, and my iTunes library has a relative path to Z: for all of my music - the fact that Link is automatically picking Z: as my network sync target for my device does not work for me to sync music, or anything really. I can't figure out how to change this value to something else.
I found the registry key: \HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Research In Motion\Device Manager\Device Settings\<DEVICENAME>\VolumeMapping with a default blank REG_SZ - can I use this key at all to manually change drive mappings for my device? If so, what is the key/value pair I need and will this mess up any assumptions taken inside the Link software for synching?
... Also, I have a Feature Enhancement Request to go along with this issue: Add a "Change drive map letter" button beside the "Turn on wireless connections to my computer" button in Link, and add the same option in the context menu to the 'Device Manager' for the mapping (which currently just says 'Explore').
    Thanks for the help,
     - Jeff

I do not know a lot about this subject but since Device Manager is not a Device and the BlackBerry Phone is not recognized as a Device in Disk management unless Mass Storage is turned ON it looks as if by design you cannot change the Drive Letter.
Also if Mass Storage is turned On in the Phone Settings File Manager and BB link will not work but the BB Phone will then be recognized as a Device in Disk Management and the Drive Letter can be changed, this has no effect on the Drive Letters for Device Manager.
Normally to change the Drive Letter and Paths of a Device once the Device is plugged you would go to Administrative Tools, Computer Management, Disk Management, right click the Device and choose "Change Drive Letter and Paths"
Changing the Registry or Uninstalling Device Manager but keeping BB Link or looking for a Utility that can change the Drive Letter such as the one that many XP users had called TweakUI (only worked in XP) or changing the Drive Letter for your Network may be the only way.
