Is it the SSD or the OS? - Flashing ? Folder
MacBook early 2011
Intel i5 processor 2.3
8gb ram
128gb Samsung 830 Solid State Drive
OS X Mavericks
So here's the deal:
I was browsing the internet on chrome and suddenly the computer got very slow, the circling timer thing came up, and everything froze. So I did hard reset.
Turn it back on, blinking question mark folder comes up.
I restart and try internet recovery mode, but the SSD doesn't come up on the list of drives to reinstall lion to. So I turn off the machine.
I replace the SSD with my MacBook's original HDD running Lion, and plug the SSD externally to try to save my data into another external drive. But it is so slow that I can't get 2gb of data to transfer and the verify disk function appears to take over 3 hours. There I realize my SSD has something seriously wrong with it.
Surprisingly, I replace the HDD with the SSD again and it boots ! I'm able to transfer my desktop files, and then it slows down and freezes again. Did a hard reset, then ? folder....
Now, I put the HDD back in, plug the SSD externally, and magically, I transfer ALL my files to my other external drive with no problems at all !! I then do a verify disk, repair disk, everything comes up OK / green light .......... But after puttingSSD back in, guess what ? ... Blinking question mark folder !!!!
I'm confused because externally the SSD works great-ish, but won't be read by the the Operating system , at all.
Another information that may help is that the SSD has been nearly full and running slow bc of it - for the past 3 months or so , so maybe I've been pushing it a bit too far, and it finally gave in.
At this point I know my option is to send the SSD in to Samsung for a replacement (still under warranty)
Or just erase the whole SSD and start from scratch. Hoping that solves the issue, which I don't think it will.
Has anyone have a clue whether I got a faulty SSD or OS??
Thanks !
ks09,
if your SSD works well externally, but doesn’t work well internally, then the problem could be not with the SSD, not with the OS, but with a faulty internal SATA cable.
Note that filling a SSD beyond 75% capacity or so will cause performance degradation.

I restarted my computer, but the screen only shows a flashing folder icon with a question mark. What to do?
It means that the system boot directory can't be found.

How can I tell where the OS (Snow Leopard) is? I’m not sure if it is on the SSD or the regular HD. I just had a rough weekend trying to back things up with Time Machine and I think the OS was copied to the regular HD, or could be in two places? How do I find where the OS is? If it is on the regular drive I want to put it on the SSD.
Thank you very much! Some recent systems don't observe that convention - not sure at the moment about Snow Leopard but I have a feeling it doesn't.
Copy the following into the AppleScript Editor (in Applications/Utilities)
set dsk to the path to startup disk as string

will the MBP-R SSD's ever be upgradible in the future ,as we know they can be removed , so will we see replacement drives become available ?
check out the SSD (ifixit tear down ) http://www.ifixit.com/Guide/Image/meta/LpjTmUO4MTnygPTvYes, the flash drives can be removed. So can the battery - but be aware that what you're looking at is a teardown - you wouldn't want to try replacing the battery on your own.
It may be that, one day, Apple or a third-party will come out with replaceable flash storage but it's highly unlikely that it will be user replaceable.
Just be aware when you purchase your MBP-R that there is nothing - nothing - that is user replaceable, or even Apple replaceable in some instances, at this time.
Just spend the $4K+ and get a fully outfitted model. Don't bet on the future.

I am expecting a new iMac (i7 with SSD). How can I transfer only certain applications along with the system, library etc. to this limited (space) HD and other applications to the conventional disk HD in order to save space on the SSD?
Thank you,

I have the same scenario, using an SSD for my start-up drive. I have copied my Applications folder to a mechanical hard drive and created symbolic link to it. The symbolic link resides on the SSD and works properly.
That may not be the best solution. Many updaters expect apps, especially Apple apps, to be in the /Applications folder on the OSX drive; if there are updates, the apps may not be found, thus may not be updated. I don't know if the installers/updaters will follow a symbolic link or not.
DItto some apps, especially Adobe apps, won't even work if they're anywhere else. Again, I don't know if they'll follow a symbolic link, either. -
Who makes the SSD in the 2012 MacBook Pro 13" i7 8GB Ram model?
Looking to make the plunge from PC to Mac finally but finding difficulty in seeking answers to my question. Considering a MackBook Pro 13" i7 2.9 GHz 8Gb Ram, thinking about whether or not to upgrade to a 256 SSD. I posed a question earlier to an Apple tech who couldn't or refused to enlighten me on what the brand name of the SSD was. In earlier forums I had noticed they used toshiba (TS) or samsung (sm) I'm just trying to figure out what I'm spending $300 +/- on. I have also watched some videos from Mac users and from Samsung on how to install an SSD so I'm just trying to figure out if it is wise to upgrade from apple or do it my self. The SSD I was considering was the Samsung 256 830 series. Any insight this Army Veteran would be very appreciative.
yes, it's much better to do the upgrade yourself - buying the Samsung SSD is a good choice for your Macbook.
it's quite easy to clone your drive - i'll include a link on the step by steps at the bottom and you can use it for reference if you wish to do so.
with regards to Trim, you can download and install Trim Enabler - here's the link for it.
http://www.macupdate.com/app/mac/37852/trim-enabler
the advantage of enabling trim is for performance on the write speed. you can either enable it if you wish to do so or leave it off. see what works best for you.
here are the steps for cloning your hard drive to your new ssd.

Is the SSD in the 15" MacBook Pro Retina compatible with the 13" MacBook Pro Retina?
A friend upgraded his Retina MacBook Pro 15" from 256GB to an OWC 480GB SSD. He was going to sell me the 256GB SSD he pulled out of his rMBP. I was thinking of buying the base 13" rMBP and installing that 256GB SSD from the 15" rMBP. Will that work or are they not compatible. Eyeballing it, they look to be exactly the same size so physically it would fit but not sure if they are not compatible for other reasons.
none of what you mentioned - use a damp micro fibre cloth to wipe your macbook retina.
make sure it's damp and not wet.
using a wet cloth can cause some drips between the keys that might create an issue - so make sure it's just damp. -
How is the SSD in the U430 used?
I bought the U430 a month ago and have searched all over the internet but didn't retrieve any information about how the SSD is used. There is a 25GB SSD and there is nothing on it except some lenovo drivers. Actually I expected the OS (Win 8) to be on that drive, can I make an Image of the the OS and move it to the SSD or can I only use it as intended as cache? But for using it as a cache I'd need a special software right? I read that there is a software called ExpressCache on some Lenovo devices that moves some often used files to the SSD, do I need to install it?
I'm aware of the fact that there isn't a 'real' SSD in the Laptop but a hybrid HDD.
Thanks for your help.
Solved!
Go to Solution.Hey. I have u430 touch ultrabook too. And I was also unsuccesfully looking for answer how our hybrid drive Seagate ST500LX005-1CW162 is working... anyway what I discovered is that probably that 25 GB is not SSD, just the different partition of normal HDD. If you open disk managment you can see that both big 423 GB and 25 GB disks are NTFS types. Also you can see that there is one partition with 14,44 GB and I suppose that this is that SSD (when you bought u430 there was specs like 500+16 GB right ? ). Anyway that 14,44 GB is 100% free... i was expecting that software will be saving there routes to most often used applications, some things for faster boot time of system... so it will be used like that "cache" memory.
Program express cache is for systems with mSATA SSDs. It is something different that our hybrid SSHD which I recently discovered.
And I started to detect how our SSD is working because since I updated on win 8.1 my boot time is significantly slower than it was on win 8. I supposed that it could be because win 8.1 is not working with that SSD... still don´t know what is the problem -
Do Apple pre-install the OS on the SSD or the HD?
For those of you who have bought a new iMac (Intel) and also the SSD option:
1 - Was the OS pre-installed?
2 - Which drive was it installed on?

I have insert the windows 7 disc as the instruction. Every things go fine at the starting, until the part that need to select the harddisk partition to install the windows.Even I have formatted the harddisk in the window installer, I can't continue my installation. Will it be the problem that the macbook air is using the SDD?
I'm having the same problem. Yes, I followed the instructions completely all the way through clicking Format under advanced options for the BOOTCAMP partition. It appears to format it correctly, but when I click Next, I get the message "Setup was unable to create a new system partition or locate an existing system partition."
I read in the forums that I should unplug the USB drive. I tried that and instead, get the following message:
"Windows is unable to install to the selected location. Error: 0x80300001"
I have a new Retina display running Mountain LIon and the latest of everything. I tried installing both Windows 7 Home Premium SP1 ISO and Windows 7 Pro SP1 ISO, both downloaded from Microsoft. I am booting from a 32GB USB3 drive. I used Boot Camp Assistant for everything.
I removed my old Windows XP VM from Parallels, wiping everything. The only other thing I can think of is that my MacOS is connected to Time Machine, but MacOS is not running while Windows is trying to install itself.
Any ideas? Thanks! -
I spend a lot of time in a location far from home. I bought a new MacPro 12 core to use at home and took the old 4 core to the alternate location. I figured I could just take my hard drives back and forth instead of schlepping a whole MacPro. The 12 core has a SSD drive to boot from and a 2 TB storage drive for photo files. It came with Mountain Lion (10.8.2). At the new location the 4 core does not find the SSD and won't boot. Grey screen. If I take the SSD out I can boot with the 2TB drive but it boots in OSX 10.6.8. I can get by with that workaround, but I'd like to use the SSD if I can because PhotoShop runs a lot faster from it.
The SSD does not show up in Finder or Disk Utility when the computer is booted up with the 2TB drive.
What do I need to do?...or that the installed image on the SSD came from a model-specific version of Mac OS X that shipped with that Mac, and does not have the drivers to support a different model Macintosh, not even an older Mac Pro.
You can install a new Mac OS X image, such as "Full Retail" 10.6.3 off a DVD in under an hour, and have it up to date and ready for production in only a little more time.
Or you could clone 10.6.8 onto the SSD (from the other Hard Drive that does boot) in about a quarter hour. -
I have a new MacBook Air 11 inch, 4gb RAM, 256 SSD and use Mavericks OS. It is still under waranty period.
Just few days ago while I was uploading a photograph in facebook, the screen started flickering abnoromally. I tried using the escape button but nothing was working so switched off by pressing the power button.
After few minutes I tried to switch it on but my system never waked up. Called up the Apple Support, did SMC and PRAM but nothing worked. Then I was advised to take it to Apple's authorised service centre.
At the service centre the engineers diagnoised and then said that the MLB/mother board needs to be replaced. Had waited for six-long days and today they had replaced the MLB/mother board. Now, the system came to life but nothing has booted. The screen goes white and a '?' question mark icon keeps on flickering.
After thoroughly diagnoising it the engineer said that now the problem is with the SSD and the worse thing is all my important documents and photographs etc are no more there. And I don't have a backup of the same!
While Apple Support contact centre is assuring they would replace any other parts if found faulty, but I feel differently. First, the MLB/mother board was changed now they say it is SSD problem - so if the SSD too is replaced there are possibilities of more faults coming up. All I can see and feel that this particular machine has turned out to be architectually deffective that calls for immediate replacement.
Right now I am using a friend's windows pc to write this mail.
Feeling completely miserable - all my expectatations gone after investing in such an expensive machine, loss of all my data, wastage of time and energy and to top it all affecting my daily work.
Can anybody please advise what shall I do?Take the system to an Apple store to be fixed or replaced as the one you have has defective hardware.

First off I have a 3tb fusion drive.
I created a 200gb bootcamp, I tried deleting the bootcamp because I thought I messed it up and googled how to delete a mac partition which told me to use Disk Utility, did that and then erased it and somehow it got locked and wouldn't let me do anything to any partition on my hard drive (everything was greyed out)
After looking up and googling for hours I found a post saying the only way to fix it would be to go into CMD+R and go into the terminal window and type out disklist and then find the first UUID number and do something along the lines of disklist delete (UUID) i forget the exact formula. I did this, and then I had 3 separate untitled hard drives.
One in the size of 1.9gb on in 800gb and one in 121.3gb (which is the SSD), I put my time machine backup onto the 1.9gb untitled and now my computer is booting slowly (because it's no longer running off of the SSD and the original bootcamp is still there.
To be honest I am absolutely confused on what else to do!
Is there anyway I can fix this? How do I go about deleting and then re-adding the hard drives? Completely lost on how to make it back to being a 3gb fusion drive.
Thank you for all your help, I honestly really appreciate it.
I followed your instructions and got the following

I have a hdd from a late 2009 mbp. I upgraded from leopard to snow leopard to lion to mountain lion. Now I want to upgrade to a ssd. Do I need to purchase a new copy of mountain lion to go on my new ssd? If I don't, then what is the procedure to transfer mountain lion with my 4 user accounts onto the new ssd from the hdd?
I'm confused on if I can use the recovery hd on a thumb drive to install mountain lion on my ssd. Will it be pheasible with so many OS X upgrades? And then how do I get my user accounts onto the ssd from the hdd. Do I use migration assistant? Do I need to make a time machine backup first? Should I use something called Carbon Clone or something like that?
Thanks for readingIf you have a cable that connects and external HDD to the MBP, it will do. If it is something like this, an enclosure will not be needed for the swap:
An enclosure allows you to use your old HDD for storage or backup purposes. The cable will not.
Here are instructions as to how the swap can be performed using DISK UTITY. Substitute You cable for the enclosure in same:
INSTALLING A NEW HDD IN A MBP
1. Make certain that you have backed up all of your important data.
2. You will need a HDD enclosure. One with a USB connection will do. A 9 pin Firewire is better.
3. Install your new drive in the enclosure and connect it to your MBP.
4. Open DISK UTILITY>ERASE. From the left hand column drag the new drive into the 'Name' field. Make sure that the format is 'Mac OS Extended (Journaled)'. Click on the 'Erase' button.
5. Click on the 'Restore' button (on top). Drag the old drive into the 'Source' field and the new drive into the 'Destination' field. Click on the 'Restore' button on the bottom right hand corner.
Depending upon the amount of data you are transferring, this may take a couple hours or more. A Firewire will speed up the transfer. This will result in both drives having identical information on them.
6. After the data transfer has completed, you may swap the drives. Start the MBP and you have finished the installation. The initial boot may take a bit longer than you are accustomed to, but that is normal.
7. When you are satisfied that the new hard drive if functioning properly, you can erase the old drive and use it for any needs that you may have.
If there is any confusion on your part, post back.
Ciao. -
the drive connects using the cable from the SSD, however; the BIOS does not detect the drive and the drive does not power. Did i waste my time and money buying a hard drive to repalce the SSD?
