Is it time to get an iMac?

I just read on macrumors that a guy successfully upgraded the yonah chip in his macmini to a merom one with no problems at all.
Now i'm the market for a desktop mac and the powermacs are a little overkill for me so i want to get an imac but the reason i havent is because i was waiting for the merom chips.
Now that someone has sucessfully done the upgrade, i'm thinking of getting an imac now since i can upgrade the chips later on when the merom chips start shipping since the iMac has a socket based processor as well.
Usually when doing upgrades like these from my experience, the graphics cards always dissapoint as well as BIOS compatibility...but i know the Radeon X1600 card is a very solid card that'll last for a while and that intel has promised the yonah and merom boards are backwards compatible. This also means we can finally go past the 2GB RAM limit, which can only leas to good things
So what do you think folks? should i go ahead with this mode of action?

wasn't aware the merom processor was already out...

Open Applications and the the Utility folder and then Keychain Access app. In there you will find all the usernames and password that have been saved. For some reason it is not saving those passwords and or not using the ones that have been saved.
This is fairly common with Mac OS X as it happens for no apparent reason just all of a sudden.

Thank You. This helps me alot to get into the masters and to see events and photos in a utilitarian way, but it is not as easy as viewing the normal iphoto format to find photos.  Can I do something else or did I not do something right to not see normal iphoto in Time Machine ?

Make sure that no other Macs are backing up at the time
Pull the power cord from the back of the Time Capsule
    Count to ten
Plug the power cord back into the Time Capsule
Wait a few minutes, then try a backup again
Check to make sure that you are running firmware 7.6.4 on the Time Capsule

Why do i need to restart my imac everyday like ten times to get it to work, also the screen displays little digital squares.

    Hi Matt,
I purchased my imac in November of 2010 and below is a cut and past from Hardware overview. It has 1 TB hardrive, with 670 GB free. When i start up in the morning, it boots normal then freezes. Half the time i can get it to restart before it freezes, other half i have to power down then restart. At the same time throughout this process the little pixel squares show up sometimes in a single line or two aross the screen, then sometimes more random. After about 7 times of rebooting, everything runs fine for the day with no weird pixels. then i shut down at night, and start the porcess over in the morning. Thanks for your help!

Thanks Giancarlo. The problem turned out to be my modem/wireless router, which has now been replaced and the problem solved.

  • Can anyone help me get my iMac to reboot?  I get a gray "curtain" over the start up screen saying I need to restart my computer but it won't restart.  I just keep getting the same message every time.

Can anyone help me get my iMac to reboot?  I get a gray "curtain" over the light gray start up screen with a message that I need to restart my computer and to hold the power button until it powers off and then press the power button again to restart.  It just does this over and over again and won't restart.

Yeah, as necronym stated, it is a hardware issue and more than likely a RAM problem. Disconnect everything from the computer except keyboard and mouse and try again. If it still happens try removing one and/or swapping your RAM sticks over. Keep trying until you have eliminated all possible combinations. Just put a mark on one RAM stick so you know what have tried. If it still fails to boot properly you should probably replace your RAM, but that is no guarantee of success. • How do I restore Time Machine of my iMac Apps & Files to my MacBook?

    My situation:
I have 2 computers (iMac and MacBook Pro).
My MacBook Pro has a suite of software that I cannot transfer to my iMac. Why? Because the liscencing was computer specific (foolish me for thinking I could use one lisnence and have it used on one machine meant that I could unregister the former and register the other machine).
My iMac has Time Machine backups. I recently lost anything and everything purchased on iTunes. I now have that restored thanks to iTunes Support. The now up to date Time Machine backup files are up to date and regular for my iMac.
    *The Situation*
My iMac had a harddrive failure. It was replaced twice. then the graphics card failed. It was replaced. So I finally get my iMac back yesterday, now it makes a High Pitch SQUEEEEL!
iMac is back at Apple Store. I was polite.
    *What I Want to Happen*
I want to move my iTunes and all my other documents over to my MacBook, via the Time Machine backup.
    *What Happened*
Following the instructions found on this forum and the apple troubleshooting/faq sections for Time Machine, it transfered.
    *My Issue*
After the little progress meter finished, I cant find the files.
Now my computer directory looks stupid with (copy of copy of copy of copy of MacHDD)
    *My Request*
Type of Help that Could Work for Me:
    1. Tell me where the files are?
    2. Tell me how I should set up my files and time machine and stuff!
    3. or, if the above is not possible buy my computers from me, give me CDs and DVDs of my music, movies, and documents.

Exactly how did you do that? You should have used +Migration Assistant,+ but it sounds like you didn't.
After the little progress meter finished, I cant find the files.

Assuming MacHDD is the name of one of the internal HDs, it does sound like you did the transfer incorrectly.
    1. Tell me where the files are?
Probably in one or more of those copies of MacHDD.
    2. Tell me how I should set up my files and time machine and stuff!
That's going to depend on exactly what's where, and what you want to do:
Do you want to erase everything on the MacBook and copy everything from the iMac's backups, or do you have things on the MacBook that you want to keep?
When you got the second Mac, did you set it up from the other one? If you did, then you should have identical user accounts on both Macs (they may have different data, but the exact same names and passwords).
And, do you have an iTunes library, and/or the other files you want to move, in the same places on both Macs?

When trying to log into face time I get the registering device does not have appropriate credentials after I sign in, I have OSX 10.8.4 on my Mac Pro. I can log into face time without a problem using my IPAD.>

Please take each of the following steps that you haven't already tried, until the issue is reolved. If there's no resolution after Step 3, post your results.
    Step 1
Sign out of iMessage in the Accounts tab of the preferences dialog, then sign back in.
    Step 2
Log out of your user account and log back in.
    Step 3
Boot in safe mode and test, then reboot as usual and test again.
Note: If FileVault is enabled on some models, or if a firmware password is set, or if the boot volume is a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output and  Wi-Fi on certain iMacs. The next normal boot may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.

  • Is getting an iMac AND Macbook Air reasonable?

    Hello
I've been a computery guy for some time.  I am going from being a serious gamer that built a custom gaming PC that cost $3,500+ to selling said gaming PC and having no computer at all.  I am giving up gaming to return to school and would like to attend med school when I finish undergrad.  Anyhow, since I will have no computer at all, I would like to get an iMac 21.5 w/ 256GB flash and 8GB RAM to keep on my desk at home, and then get a Macbook Air 13.3 with the i5, 256GB Flash, and 8GB RAM to use at school and carry about etc.
I will be working full time in addition to going to school full time, and will be traveling on public transit and outdoors quite a lot.  My thinking is that since the Macbook will be somewhat more susceptible to damage/theivery, etc. than for people who only carry it between school/home and their car, it will be good to have a desktop to use at home and as a backup.  I do watch a fair amount of streaming media at home (although this will be more infrequent going to school + work), and would appreciate the larger screen and the ability to have a "base" at home without having to get out the Macbook and hook up the charger, etc. Also, I would prefer to put fewer cycles through the Macbook's battery which using a desktop at home would help.
I'll be doing pre-med undergrad studies, so I'll be doing average student activies...MS Office, music, streaming, surfing etc.  No games.
I'm just wondering if I'm going to be overdoing it getting both.  I will probably get between $600-1K for the sale of my gaming PC, and a $200 statement credit on the card I'll use, which will help offest the cost of both, but I've been getting mixed opinions as to whether I should get both.  I'm not rich, but I do make a half decent living and will be working during undergrad (about 5 semesters left). Plus 0% APR until August 2015 so I can pay over a few months without penalty + education discount.
Yes, I'm aware that med school is a lot of debt and I have that to look forward to.
Anyway, I'm just asking for additional opinions really to see if I'm being wasteful/crazy.  I can see myself using both.
    Thanks

My suggestion would be to get a MP Air or MB Pro and then get an external display to use when you are home. This would be less expensive and easier to mainting. You can run the laptop in clamshell mode and have the best of both world while still at home. Of the two, I'd recommend a MBP for it's power and display, however a powerful MBA may be OK too.

  • Getting my iMac replaced???

Hi everyone, I want to ask if I could get my iMac replaced... because since the first day it had a terrible speaker distortion, the problem is that it doesn't make it all the time, it's random (has happened with diferent applications, doing different things, etc)... at first i read that it could be for having the tv to close so i moved my iMac but nothing... then i read it could be for voltage problems so I connected it to an UPS but still the same problem...
To make the story short... I bought it on April 6 2009 and it has been in the service center 3 times (for a total of 19 days and counting...) in less than 2 months
1st time for 2 weeks - they changed 1 speaker
Called apple care, told me to do some procedures with no result, so i had to take it to a service center
2nd time for 2 days - told me my computer had no problem and charged me $350 pesos (around 26 dlls)
3rd time for 3 days(it's still there) - (the same place I was told my computer had no problem) and now they are changing the audio card or something like that
so if the problem isn't solved with this can I get it replaced for another with the same procesor, RAM, etc? How? obviously with no speakers problem... ¬¬
my mayor concern is that it is a 24" intel iMac (early 2008)
Thanks for your help in this topic
    Greetings

Before you call them, make sure you have all of your documentation in order. Be calm and patient however be persistent. Based on what you said the machine has only had parts replaced 2x for the same issue. If you don't get what you want pleasantly request to speak to that person's supervisor and be prepared to re-state your complete case. Luis I am assuming you purchased it directly from Apple, if you did you have a OK chance. If you bought it from a reseller that is a whole different ball game. Who did you buy the machine from?

  • Wifi using Treandnet USB and Time Machine on older iMac G4.

I have a 1st Generation Time Capsule, and older iMac G4 the cool one that looks like a lamp. I just bought a Trednet TEW-644UB Wireless N USB Adapter so that I can get wifi on my older mac from my time capsule. I installed the mac software from the disk that came with it, but there are no further instructions and I can't get it to work. Can someone walk me through the set up?
When I boot up it automatically opens the Trednet Wireless Utility. I can see my wireless network on there listed under SSID, the BSSID says 00-21-E9-B8-A4-1... The signal is 100%. The Channel is 1. Authentication says WPA-PSK, Encription says TKIP;AE, and the network Type says infrastructure. I'm pretty sure the setting are wrong but I'm not sure what to set them too.
    Thanks

I called Trednet and all I needed to do was hit the activate button. Works great... and very inexpensive.
