Is it time to rebuild the thumbnails?

I just noticed two photos are not showing up unless I scroll very fast. Otherwise they are replaced by perforated line frames. This is occuring in library view. In addition fulll screen mode is blank.
I had this when I upgraded from iPhoto 2 to 5 and lost quite a few photos that are dear to me. I am keen to limit the damage this time so any advice on the correct way to proceed is appreciated. BTW I have 2192 items inc 449 short video clips.

Are the edit windows dark gray with a dotted square and exclamation point in the middle? If so that's an indication that iPhoto thinks the files are not there when they actually are (unless you've moved, edited or deleted any of them while in the Finder).
You can try a few methods to straighten things out. If the first doesn't help then go to the next. First, however, is to make a backup copy of your iPhoto Library folder.
1 - download and run BatChmod on the iPhoto Library folder with the settings shown here, substituting your account name for mine. You can either type in the path to the folder or just drag the folder into that field.
2 - launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys depressed and follow the instructions to rebuild the library. Select all options.
3 - if #2 doesn't
Using iPhoto Library Manager to Rebuild Your iPhoto Library
Download iPhoto Library Manager and launch.
Click on the Add Library button, navigate to your User/Pictures folder and select your iPhoto Library folder.
Now that the library is listed in the left hand pane of iPLM, click on your library and go to the File->Rebuild Library menu option
In the next window name the new library and select the location you want it to be placed.
Click on the Create button.
Note: It can take some time to create the new library if you have a lot of photos. One user reported that with a library of about 5,000 images it took about 12 hours so plan ahead.
This does not modify the original iPhoto Library folder but just copies the necessary data from the database file and copies the original files.
4 - as a last resort you'll have to start from scratch by creating a new library and importing the Originals folder from your current library. If you have lots of keywords you do not want to lose then follow the instructions in Tutorial #1 first. Then move the current iPhoto Library folder to the desktop and it's Originals file also to the desktop. Launch iPhoto and, when asked, choose to create a new library. Drag the Originals folder from the Desktop into the open iPhoto library folder.
This will give you a new library with your keywords intact and with the same rolls. However there's a good chance that the roll dated will be different but they can be edited back to what they should be.
Give these a try in order and post back with the results.

  • My computer just had to get a new hard drive and we reloading info onto the new hard drive...my iphoto pics are all, there save about 8, but there are NO thumbnails. I tried rebuilding the thumbnails...nothing. I tried creating a new library...nothing.

I have recently had to purchase a new battery and hard drive. Because it wouldn't back up completely, I was able to recover most information, but it looked a bit different or I have found items in different places. One thing that is happening is in iphoto. All my pics are there, but there are NO thumbnails visible. I have tried rebuilding the thumbnails...nothing. I have tried creating a new library...no info even transferred. Any suggestions?

    What version of iPhoto?
Can you view the pics at full size?

I've tried rebuilding the thumbnail database, but that hasn't helped.

What version of iPhoto and system are you running?
Try moving the Zoom slider at the bottom of the iPhoto window all the way to the left.  Does that let more than one photo display in the window?

  • I cannot see thumbnails in iPhoto, only see dashes in the shape of the thumbnail

When I open Iphoto I do not see any thumbnails, only dashes surrounding the area where the thumbnails usually are.  In Events I only see a dark grey square that appears to be raised, but no thumbnails.  If I click on the blank I can see the photo.  Have restored from Time Machine two times with the help of Apple Care rep.  Still no thumbnails, can you help me?

Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Include the option to rebuild the thumbnails. This can take three or four goes to work.

  • Imported photos appear only as dotted line in the thumbnail view.

For the past year all of the photos that I have imported just show up as a "blank" with a dotted line around it.  I can only view photos one at a time (after I click on it).  What's up?

  • In iPhoto, the thumbnails do not match the real photo, they repeat often the same 15 photos over and over

My iPhoto 9.3.2 (670..63) in Mountain Lion is repeating a grouping of thummnails whose photos when you click do not match.  I have called Apple Care and have reinstalled a new iPhoto library and still have the problem.  We did al this after the update but not the upgracde to MOuntain Lion. This issue is so annoying since instead of easily looking thorugh the thumbnaisl I have to click on each thumnail to see what is under them.  Please help.

  • Change of time stamp on RAW thumbnails

    I have PSE 9.0. I shoot in RAW on a Canon 550D and a Canon G10.
When I open a RAW file in editor, whether or not I edit that file, it changes the time stamp on the thumbnail by 1 hour. If I open it twice it changes the time by two hours, eg from 1.10pm to 2.10pm to 3.10pm. Of course, when I then re-open the Organiser, these thumbnails are out of order as shot.
I have no idea why this is happening. Is there some setting I need to change?

I think unlike jpeg files where the EXIF data will be embedded in the file Adobe will read the XMP data for Raw Files.
You can open an image in Full Edit and click File >>File Info to bring up the XMP dialog. The raw tab offers a wealth of information.
However the behavior you are experiencing seems odd and there looks to be a bug in the most recent update.
As you say it alters the order of photos from their original sequence. I think Adobe could introduce File Name Order as they do in Bridge. This would be a useful alternative for sorting files in the organizer.

  • Out of the blue some of my event folders now fail to show the thumbnails, just empty frames? whats up with that?

for some reason, some of my event folders are blank on the events page and the event folders no longer show the thumbnails, just hash-mark empty frames. This is just a few events all of a sudden out of many events. Any idea whats going on and how to fix it? Thanks

Then try, if rebuilding the thumbnails will help.  What is your iPhoto version? In iPhoto 9.5.1 do the following:
Launch iPhoto with the key combination⌥⌘  (alt/option-command) held down.
Keep holding down both the keys, until the "Library First Aid" panel opens.
Select "Rebuild thumbnails" from the panel. and let iPhoto recreate the thumbnails.
If you don't have a current backup of your iPhoto library, make a new backup before you try the first aid options.

I've restored the library from time machine, rebuilt the library from iPhoto and run through the rebuild thumbnails function with no success. Try the following:
Using iPhoto Library Manager  to Rebuild Your iPhoto Library

    Click on the Create button.
Note: This creates a new library based on the LIbraryData.xml file in the library and will recover Events, Albums, keywords, titles and comments but not books, calendars or slideshows. The original library will be left untouched for further attempts at fixing the problem or in case the rebuilt library is not satisfactory.

  • IPhoto 11 won't launch and crashes every time I try to rebuild the library. Urgh.

iPhoto 11 won't launch- it's another case of an infinite skinny wheel. I've tried rebuilding the library numerous times, each time it takes about a day and each time it crashes near the end. This is just ridiculous. Any tips folks?
APPLE if you can hear me... shouldn't you be testing this stuff prior to release? I know you do but I mean, like REALLY testing it? This is my second iPhoto upgrade disaster. The last time I lost my entire library, had to spend £80 on recovery software that recovered not only most of my photos, but every image cached on my machine. So then I had the fun of sorting through literally thousands of images...
And I only got the upgrade becasue my iPhone is refusing to sync, freezing on the iPhoto bit. Gah.

Make a temporary, backup copy (if you don't already have a backup copy) of the library and apply the two fixes below in order as needed:
    Fix #1
Launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys held down and rebuild the library.
Select the options identified in the screenshot.
    Fix #2
Using iPhoto Library Manager  to Rebuild Your iPhoto Library
Download iPhoto Library Manager and launch.
Click on the Add Library button, navigate to your Home/Pictures folder and select your iPhoto Library folder.
Now that the library is listed in the left hand pane of iPLM, click on your library and go to the File ➙ Rebuild Library menu option

If you do not have the original install DVDs, use the Aperture Trial installer instead:
Try if this download link for the trial version still works: if yes, you can unlock it with your serial number:

Time machine should have a good copy - how are you determining that it is corrupt
If you want the thumbnails as photos right click on the iPhoto library and make a copy of the data folder and then import it into a new iPhoto library - it contains your thumbnails
