Is it time to "start a standard session"?

Hi!
I've been happy for a long time with my startx + xinitrc "lightweight"  environment. Using compiz as a tiling WM, some "independent" things like conky and geany... some xfce stuff... But it seems to get more and more complicated to keep stuff from breaking or to get new features working. And the parts of xfce I'm using constantly seem to loose functionality or pull more "crap" (gnome packages) that they need to work properly.
Is it time to move on and "start a session"? Maybe a gnome-session (can't get rid of gnome dependencies anyway -.-)? Or will xfce work better if I start it the way it seems to be intended?
Or am I just doing it wrong and should keep looking for better / newer alternativ for the things that "break" - component by component?
In case you're wondering: at the moment, I can only mount usb devices as root. Something is spamming my log files because it wants "more dbus" or "less dbus" - not sure, but I'll soon have to empty those again before I run out of disk space if I don't have time to figure out what's it about & fix the problem by then.  I've gotten used to avoid copy+paste when it comes url's, file locations etc because most programs stated using different "strange paths" like "file://" - which do not work in others... sometimes, broken stuff "pops up", because it got pulled along by a new "feature" of something I have used for years and that is now trying to swallow something else that I have used for years... and a lot more that I already got used to and forgot but that most likely is still having an influence on my work grumpiness level
Opinions, hints? Thanks!

I used to think that I couldn't work without a panel until I went cold turkey one day and simply uninstalled it from my openbox setup.
I am sort of working without a panel (and without window decorations), but If I get "cold turkey" off compiz, I need binoculars... and maybe a guy that carries my keyboard around after me or something like that. And I don't even know where to begin if I want to dim windows that are too bright easily without brightness plugin. Also many more things.
You have to realize that the DE's are huge.
Yes... but so is "my" Desktop Enviroment and there I'm sort of alone. Some of the bugs concern hardly anyone else. And even worse are those that are not really "bugs", just a "change in the way stuff has to be configured by the user that doesn't happen automatically". Lots of those.
whoops wrote:...problems with "updates breaking stuff / time you need to keep everything working" getting more and more over the last year or so
With the rolling release nature of Arch and the fact that its aimed at intermediate to expert level users, you have to expect breakage and the ability to fix your system for yourself. If you don't find this appealing, Arch, unfortunately, might not be for you. Other alternatives do exist.
I find this "appealing". It's not "the breakage & fixing" per-see that bothers me - it's the amount. It seems to grow & get worse. A year ago, I had to spend a few hours a week, some stuff was broken for a while sometimes and that was fine - helped me learn. Now I'm not an expert but I know a lot more already than a year ago, but with only the "few hours a week" fixing stuff, a lot more is always broken than it used to be. Not sure if I chose the wrong applications... or the wrong ways to do stuff... or if it's just the way that is at the moment with so many important updates and maybe small / unusual solutions "being left behind" in a way...?
whoops wrote:Guess it'd take me a few months to adjust... stuff / myself).
You said it !
Problem is, I don't know to what - can't try everything for a few months...
So you'd all guess, that switching to a "standard session" would most likely not work out much better than "beginning anew with other 'random' / independent components" or "just keeping up what I've been doing until everything works"?
XFCE seems to be a main offender these days
Mmmh... or maybe just get rid of xfce first? Things actually got less confusing when I went from gnome to xfce a few years ago... but xfce changed and I already threw out most of it (just I can't find a terminal / file manager that suits me better... mmh, don't really need a file manager beside the termina...).
functionality(
Thunar[which I only use for thumbnails / media files]
+ xfce4-volman
+ xfce4-panel[which I only use for alsa volume control])
) =< functionality(
lighttpd+php[for thumbnails / media files / browser as media player]
+ autofs
+ alsa-mixer[in a terminal widget layer]
Or something? I might find a better combination... Don't know... Never tried that "picasa" thing all the "windows people" are talking of. Maybe that's something that I should consider when I "long for thumbnails" instead of running local website...
Simpler is always better, so I would say if you like compiz stick to it, as stripped down as possible, and then try to only use cli or at least non-DE (non-gtk2/qt) apps as much as possible. At least ones without a ton of dependencies.
After about 2 years of hating gconf, my system is pretty much stripped of everything it can be stripped off without having to add more than I removed. There's still gstreamer, but I guess the reasons for choosing that over the others are mostly all broken or replaced by now... the rest isn't that bad. gtk2 I like by the way - as long as it's not trying to pull half of gnome (evolution-data-server... gconf... really not sure, surrendering isn't easier than killing those over and over again).
Maybe I'll just do more "customizing" until (a) all is all fine or (b) I'm so traumatized I have to switch to windows - whatever comes first. Not sure yet. Maybe I'm more confused than in the beginning... gotta sleep over that.

  • Is it possible to NOT have 'Restore Previous Session' option come up automatically every time you start Firefox?

A large envelope pops up mid-screen every time I start Firefox, asking if I want to restore previous session. I don't want all users after me to have this option, but don't want to keep an empty history either. Can I deselect this option somewhere? Looked around, but found nothing.

Unfortunately changing the options found under "Completely disable session restore" does not make any difference to this problem.

  • Can I disable the restore previous session that appears every time I start Firefox?

Consider using a separate password protected Operating System account, if possible, that may help.
You may use [[Private Browsing]] to prevent some of these problems occurring.

  • When i open a new tab i get a tab with 2 blue bars, instead of one - the one on top of the site - and a little firefox dropdown - and when i start the next session firefox crashes???

When clicking a link - a new tab opens. But the new tab which opens looks wired: There are 2 blue bars - the one you get on each session(where the red x is which closes everything) - I don`t know how you call this. This 2nd blue bar is located directly under the "normal" one and has got - on the left hand side- a firefox dropdown menue(when you click it you get: New Tab, Start private browsing, edit, save page as and so on.
I can close the session as always but when i start the next session a view hours or a day later then firefox opens all the tabs from the session before as individual windows - and then it crashes. This happens 2 or 3 times - then i see a window where i am asked to either restore the old session(which doesn`t work - it always crashes again) or start a new session - which works.
This is very annoying. Please tell me what to do.
    Thank you

It is possible that there is a problem with the files sessionstore.js and sessionstore.bak in the Firefox Profile Folder.
Delete the files sessionstore.js [2] and sessionstore.bak in the Firefox Profile Folder.
    * Help > Troubleshooting Information > Profile Directory: Open Containing Folder
    * http://kb.mozillazine.org/Profile_folder_-_Firefox
If you see files sessionstore-##.js with a number in the left part of the name like sessionstore-1.js then delete those as well.<br />
Deleting sessionstore.js will cause App Tabs and Tab Groups and open and closed (undo) tabs to get lost, so you will have to create them again (make a note or bookmark them).

Hello, having a problem with Logic 9 on a Mac Pro.Working on a lenghty song and apparently session got corrupted.Doesnt let me export tracks, program crashes.Already tried start brand new session with the tracks imported into it but still wont export.Suggestions?

Thanks, Ian. Yeah, that's how I do it now...or with the controls in the left side pane. Still, I would have liked that quick on-the-spot edit capability...especially while sketching.

Sorry Mark, you are out of luck as it does not do that - it works the same as L8. The way I would achieve that with more accuracy and control would be to route all the tracks you want to fade to a Bus then use volume automation on the bus. To do this you will need to add a standard audio track, then re-assign it using (Control Click on the track header) to the Bus track. You can then automate volume/plugins etc on the Bus track.

hello there,  there is a rare window that keeps popping up every time i start Logic.  It's a "tempo" window with strange layout about midi effects and so,.... is it normal?  How can i improve this?  Thanks.

Hmm, that's some sort of MIDI Arpeggiator setup in your environment. Strange that you don't know it, this has to be custom-installed, it is not part of the standard setup.
You can do two things about it:
1.unlock your current screenset (shift-L), then close the (Bass Driver) window, then relock the screenset (shift-L). Next time you open up this project you won't see the Bass Driver, but it is still in the project.
    2. You can remove the whole page: open the Environment (cmd-8), then go to the dropdown menu arrow top left of the Environment window and select the Bass Driver layer. If it is selected, dropdown again and choose Delete. Now Save your project under a different name (Save As...), so that you still keep the Bass Driver setup in the original project. If you don't need to keep it, you can simply Save.

If you have more than one user account, these instructions must be carried out as an administrator.
Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left. If you don't see that menu, select
    View ▹ Show Log List
    from the menu bar.
Enter the word "Starting" (without the quotes) in the String Matching text field. You should now see log messages with the words "Starting * backup," where * represents any of the words "automatic," "manual," or "standard." Note the timestamp of the last such message that corresponds to an abnormal backup. Now
CLEAR THE WORD "Starting" FROM THE TEXT FIELD
so that all messages are showning, and scroll back in the log to the time you noted. Select the messages timestamped from then until the end of the backup, or the end of the log if that's not clear. Copy them to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste (command-V) into a reply to this message.
If all you see are messages that contain the word "Starting," you didn't clear the text field.
If there are runs of repeated messages, post only one example of each. Don't post many repetitions of the same message.
When posting a log extract, be selective. Don't post more than is requested.

  • The new Firefox opens all the old tabs it closed with, when it starts. I'd rather just start a new session. How can I make that the default setting?

The new Firefox re-opens all the tabs it closed with; and, I'd rather just start a new session, as the default setting. How can I do this? It would make it easier on me, the machine, and the Internet feed, not to reload automatically a bunch of tabs that were just closed. There must be someway to fix this. This happens on my brother's Windows computer, as well; and, it's running Firefox 4. Thanks for your help.

Make that "Firefox ->Preferences -> General -> When Firefox starts: "Show my windows and tabs from last time" is not selected as this is not the default.
Basically this setting will make Firefox start with whatever windows and tabs that were last open when a user closes Firefox by way of File ->Quit/Exit as if Firefox was never closed.

  • Macbook boots twice every time it starts

I have the latest Macbook 13' bought in 2013. I noticed that recently every time I start or restart my Mac, it boots twice. I would be prompted to enter the password after the launch sound and then after I enter my password, a bar appears and when it loads to full, my Mac would restart and repeat the process, asking me to enter my password again. This time without the launch sound.
    Is this normal?

    Found this one: http://www.reddit.com/r/mac/comments/2afahr/have_to_login_twice_for_macbook_pro/
Is FileVault enabled? If so, you have to login once to unlock the encrypted disc followed by your standard account login.
Edit: To check if FileVault is enabled open System Preferences -> Security & Privacy -> FileVault

In test lab, using ISE 1.2. trying to authenticate wireless endpoint from WLC 2500 with code 7.2.103 . But when wireless endpoint trying to connect to 802.1X SSID receiving ISE logs showing following error.
5441 Endpoint started new EAP session while the packet of previous EAP session  is being processed. Dropping new session
On endpoint its showing 'Connecting' status for long time...
To resolve this disconnected endpoint from WLC, also tried to connect to SSID after waiting for considerable time- But No success. Never received error for prior to ISE 1.2. Any Workaround? Any bugs. Any pointer to resolve this,

Thanks both of you. But I believe some workaround should be there to resolve. Can not wait to release ISE 1.3 . Till that time only way I could see is to rebuild the ISE instance. What do you say ?
