Is it time to upgrade from CS3 to CS4?

I currently use CS3 but have a version of CS4.  I edit full HD XD CAM EX and Cineform 25p.   The reason I have not yet switched to CS4 is because I am waiting for the bugs to be worked out.  I am now checking in to see how things have moved forward on that end.  Is it worth it to upgrade or should I stick with CS3 for now?

I currently use CS3 but have a version of CS4.
What is stopping you from trying it out? CS3 and CS4 can peacefully coexist on the same system. Given your decisiveness shown in the past, only you can decide and you have the means to make a decision. OTOH, I would not be surprised I you only make your decision when CS5 has been on the market for over a year.
Your question has about the same value as someone saying:
"I have a Beamer 530 from 2004 and a Beamer 530 from 2009. Should I be driving the 2009 version?"

    Hi,
We have had an administrator who upgraded from CS3 to CS4.
However, any of our other users still using CS3 now get the

Do you know any way around this issue?

    Hi,
No they don't have to, at least I think so. If your
administror go to the menubar: Contribute>Administer
Websites> Choose the site you wish to set the settings for. In
'Compatibility' choose 'Transition Mode' and klik OK. This should
allow the other users to keep working in their version of

I say 'should'... Read my entry in the general discussion

  • Upgrade from CS3 to CS4 Extended

I have just purchased an upgrade from Photoshop CS3 Standard to Photoshop CS4 Extended, and have problems activating. In the dropdown it only offers an upgrade from CS3 Extended and will not accept a serial number from CS3. I've spent about 2 FRUSTRATING hours on the phone today and all they can offer is that I give them the challenge code and they activate this installation, and each time I have to re install I would have to do the same. Needless to say I wasn't impressed at all, and have got an RMA number. Has anyone else suffered from this problem?

  • Upgrading from Cs3 to Cs4

    Hello,
I am upgrading to CS4 from the CS3 design premium, and was
wondering how to get rid of all the CS3 programs with out deleting
all my extensions in Dreamweaver, all my components is Flash and so
on. It seems as if all the programs don't actually have an
unistaller in the design premium. Should I just throw them in the
trash... I don't think so, but I'm not sure. if any of you have any
ideas I would love to hear them.
    Thanks for your time.

Just go ahead and instal CS4, it will install to a new folder
    anyway.
Once you are sure that the new version has picked up all your
    site files,
extensions (you have to enable them in the new version), you
    can go ahead
    and delete CS3.
PS I would also make a backup of all the site definitions
    before doing
    anyway too :-)

  • What happen to plugins when upgrade from CS3 to CS4?

This question may have been asked before but I could not find in the forum.
I have a few plugins installed in my CS3 now. Do I need to manually reinstall all of them when I upgrade to CS4?
    Thanks

    Hi,
I'm assuming you are asking about 3rd party plug-ins.
Most likely you will need to reinstall for each version; But it depends on how you installed it. You may also need to check with the 3rd party about license and activation.
You can opt to install into the Ps plug-in folder for any given version, or install to a location outside of Ps and then point to that directory in the Ps preferences (see Preferences> Plug-Ins> Additional Plug-Ins Folder).
If you went the former route then reinstall to CS4. If you went the later, check the preference option and point to the folder.
BTW, don't just move the whole CS3 Plug-Ins directory over to CS4 because the set shipped with Ps get rebuilt and you will put copies from CS3 that are not compatible with CS4 into that directory.

  • Install upgrade from CS3 to CS4

    Hey everybody,
I want to upgrade from my current Indesign CS3 installation to CS4 (not the whole creative suite). All I got is a new serial number. Can someone tell me what's the best way to do the upgrade? Do I just have to change a license file or run the CS3 installation routine again plus entering the new serial or do I even have to uninstall CS3 first? Apart from that is there any way i can keep my Indesign CS3 version running besides my new Indesign CS4 version?
    Thanks for your help!

The versions are completely separate applications, with their own installers. As already mentioned they will peacefully coexist, but only a standalone installation can be upgraded with a single product upgrade. Suites must be upgraded as a unit.
I sort of sounds like you bought a pirated serial number or something (or maybe you work for a corporation that uses site licensing). If the former, you got ripped off. If the latter, contact your IT department to install the program. You can't "convert" one version into another -- you need the installation package.

  • Upgrade from CS3 to CS4 won't accept CS3 serial number

    Hi
I bought a downloadable upgrade to CS4 Design Premium a couple of weeks ago, installed OK, accepted the new serial number but when it asked for my CS3 serial number it won’t accept it. I have contacted Adobe Support and they told me that I needed to reinstall as they thought that it was doing this because I hadn’t chosen International English as the language and my original CS3 was set to International English. I did this but it still won’t accept my old serial number and I am having to use the programmes as a trial version. I have contacted Adobe again but it has been a week now and no response – has anyone else had this problem? I am getting concerned about what will happen when the trial runs out!
    Thanks for your help
Message was edited by Jochem van Dieten: removed attached image with serial number

Downloaded OK – Installed OK – when I open any of the programmes I get a Software Setup box that opens asking to choose the option of using the product on a trial basis or inputting my serial number – I input the new CS4 serial number and that is OK – then you click next and it brings up an Upgrade Check asking you to select a product that you already own (this is only a drop down menu of CS3 items, i.e. Design Premium, Master Collection etc) and asking you to input the serial number for this product – this is where it is falling over – I  input my old CS3 serial number and I get a cross and a box that comes up saying <The serial number you have entered does not match the product you have selected. Please try reentering the serial number, or selecting a different product from which to upgrade> this is where I am putting in my CS3 Design Premium serial number and it won’t accept it even though it is correct and is even listed under my Adobe Account as CS3 Design Premium!
    Hope that makes more sense

  • Upgrade from CS3 to CS4 losing Sites

While it has never happened to me, we see relatively frequent
    posts here
from people whose copy of Dreamweaver has lost all of its
    site
definitions. For that reason, any time I create a new site, I
    always
export the definition and keep it in a safe place. Then, if I
    ever have
that problem, restoring will be easy because I always have a
    backup.

  • Why should my clients who use contribute 3 suffer because I upgrade from cs3 to cs4?

I developed a template that can be used by a number of chapters of a charitable organization. The chapters who subscribe to my template all purchased contribute cs3 and it works well for them.  I may have made the mistake of buying the CS4 upgrade, as any new keys that I send using Dreamweaver cs4 to new users can not be used by users with contribute cs3. Most of these chapter already using contribute 3, do not have the funds to upgrade to contribute 4.
The code of my template has not changed, only the tool that I use to administer it has, why should they have to upgrade because I have?
This also makes it so that older users of my template will not be able to beneifit from the new version of the template. Do I have to reinstall CS3 and keep using CS3 to administer their network or do I have to force them to purchase the upgrade because I chose to upgrade to Dreamweaver CS4? There had to be a way I can send a contribute 3 user a new key because the user has changed names without forcing them to upgrade. Otherwise I have to develop my template so that changes can be made by users using other wisiwig programs.

    Thanks for that.
Yes I had the notion I may have been duped into buying a counterfeit CS3. I got it from Amazon and though Adobe seem to think that the serial number is OK they could not trace it on their system. However, if ths is a fake copy, what can Adobe do to help? How did they help you? I can't see them giving me a free CS3 in exchange - so I'm stuck!
    Kind regards
I had exactly the same problem and I am sorry to say that you may have a counterfeit version of CS3. Contact Adobe they helped me to sort out the problem.

  • Upgrading from CS3 to CS4 - Are user settings auto-imported?

    Hi Folks,
I would like to know how the CS4 installation handles the users settings (the vast array of filters, regex search and find commands, brushes, etc. etc. an avid CS3 user is likely to have). Are these automatically imported into the CS4 folders for use in CS4?
OR does the user have to manually find and copy over these settings?
    With thanks,
    Jonathan

    Thanks Dave,
That's I suspected, as this was the case for CS2 through to CS3.
How Adobe can justify not having a completely automated upgrade process for what is potentially a $2500 suite of software, I am not sure. There must be some reason, although I haven't thought of any.
Does Adobe at least provided a document that outlines the non-automated upgrading of the Creative Suite? Many users are not technically inclined toward hunting out tens of user setting folders spread out all over the show, and manually copying them to new locations. Surely Adobe is aware of this?
The above questions and statements are primarily aimed at Adobe, although I realise these are User to User forums. I am essentially thinking out loud.
    Cheers,
    Jonathan

  • Upgrade from CS3 to CS4-now I have both.

I just installed the CS4 Design Standard upgrade. It asked for the CS4 Serial number and installed fine.
However, now I have 2 different copies. CS3 and 4. Can I uninstall the CS3 without damaging my new install?
AND how do I do it?

It would be best to keep both until you are familiar with the new software. then uninstall it when you don't need it anymore. If you end up wanting to use CS3 after you have uninstalled it you must uninstall CS4 to reinstall CS3 then reinstall CS4.
I have all 4 versions on my computer. They all play nice with each other.

  • File types not registered when upgrading from CS3 to CS4

I installed my CS4 Design Premium upgrade before uninstalling CS3 - Win XP system. Now none of the file types that were registered for CS3  are registered to the CS4 programs. I've tried changing the settings individually in File Types with less than complete success. Is there a way to register all of the CS4 file types without reinstalling the entire package?
    Thanks!

If you removed CS3 after installing CS4 you have a problem that is not restricted to file associations. You will need to re-install CS4.

  • There's an error in my flash program upon upgrading from CS3 to CS4

    First, i'm using AS3.
I cannot divulge too much, but i have a multiscene, fairly complex flash program that runs fine in CS3. Upon upgrading to Flash CS4 - i can open the file and edit it any which way, but when testing it (ctrl+enter) i get an error in the output window (1009) and a blank test window, as if it doesn't want to start.
    Why?
i can only provide few specifics if needed. thanks.

There were changes in CS4 that could in some cases let you get away with things that you couldn't in CS3, mostly to do with going to a frame and trying to do something to an object that now exists on that frame. Error 1009 is what happens if you try to use something that isn't there yet. I guess it's possible that because CS4 is better at using objects at the new frame, that it may have triggered a problem that CS3 wouldn't have triggered.
In any case, first thing you could try is updating to the recent 10.0.2. That fixed a lot of issues, and may improve things for you:

I don't think it is a CS4 issue. It seems that exporting using save for web uses the last SFW setting in the GUI. Try doing a normal save for web and make sure that all slices are selected in the slice dropdown. It sounds like it is now set to selected slices ( which would be the last one created )
