Is it too easy to delete images?

I appreciate the simplicity of being able to use CMD+DELETE to delete an image. But I wish Aperture offered the option of throwing up a warning window before actually moving images to the trash. I don't get any sort of warning when deleting images -- or even entire projects. They just pop straight to the trash.
I use a managed library, so perhaps folks with referenced images are seeing some sort of dialogue box. It also seems odd that the text that shows up in the right click menu for this is "Delete Version" -- even when I'm deleting a master that has no versions.
I know these files only go to Aperture's trash, which is a nice stopgap against accidentally removing something forever with a single click. Still, if anyone knows of a preference somewhere that would throw up a warning box when trying to delete a group of images or a project, please let me know.

I agree that the Aperture team needs to more precisely define "Master" and "Version". As I conceive of it, you never see a Master file. That's why when you copy a newly imported image, the copy is labeled "Version 2" (and not "Version 1"). Version 1 already exists, because every Master must have at least one Version.
The problem is that when you delete "Version 1", you are also deleting (and must, or you would have an image file with no image) the Master.
I don't know that Ap3 handles this differently for managed v. referenced files. Here is the dialog I get when I delete Version 1 of a referenced file. This is the only indication I get that deleting this file will also delete the Master.
The wording of this dialog is not as clear as it should be.
I would like to see the Aperture team specifically separate "Master (file)" from "Version 1 (image in Aperture)". I imagine a replacement dialog for the one above saying something like:
+"This is the only remaining Version of the Master (file) in your Library. Moving this Version to the Trash will move the Master (file) to the Trash as well."+
At least, that is how it looks from my POV as a user.

  • Too Easy to delete a book's content in Book Module?

    Is anyone else finding it too easy to delete -- by accident -- the content or layouts of a book you have been working on in the Book Module?  It has happened to me once and I am now very unsure of how to keep it from happening again.  I have begun making copies of the book as I progress -- which can be useful for other purposes, but doesn't answer the question of if there might be a better way for the book module to work in this respect.
    Don't get me wrong -- I love the book module already and it is worth the price of the upgrade just for that.  But I want it to be perfect!
    P

    I suspect it said all the folders would be recreated, not the files. Once you have imported, you must delete in RoboHelp in the same way as any other topic. Otherwise how does the database it maintains know what you are doing?
    If the book is going to change again, maybe linking would be a better option.

  • Warning: iPhoto 08 Makes it Too Easy to Delete Entire Library

    This is just a warning to everyone else since it happened to me this morning. I accidentally deleted my entire iPhoto library because my roommate stupidly placed the icon "iPhoto Library" into the trashcan, and this morning I emptied the trashcan.
    I don't know why Apple made the entire photo library into just one icon. That icon is so precious, if you know how to do it, make it impossible to delete it! It is WAY too easy to delete your collection of photos because of this oversimplification in the new iPhoto 08 "upgrade." I hope this doesn't happen to anyone else.
    Too bad I dont have time machine/Leopard right now...

    Sorry for your troubles, but f your room mate is capable of putting the v7 library in the trash, then he/she is as capable of putting an ordinary folder in the trash. The change was made to the format of the iPhoto library because many users were inadvertently corrupting their library by browsing through it with other software or making changes in it themselves. It's hard to legislate for room mates.
    Now you need a utilit like File Salvage and an external HD to recover the files to.

  • Too easy to delete Masters by accident?

    Hello:
    I am sorry if this ultra novice question has been asked and answered numerous times but I couldn't find the answer...
    Is the following true:
    In Aperture we never see Masters, only versions. One version is automatically created when we import the file.
    If we delete the last version the Master is also deleted -- WITHOUT ANY WARNING!
    There is no easy way to discover how many versions of a Master are left.
    If my understanding is true, then it is astonishingly easy to accidentally delete a Master. That is lunacy! Please tell me that I am wrong!
    Thanks,
    Jeff Stulin

    This issue has been discussed here in the past, in fact I had a user tip for this back when user tips were displayed  (see Deleting version also deleted the master)
    So basically what you are seeing is how Aperture works, as this has been brought to the attention of Apple a number of times in the past they either don't think it's a problem or else that is how Aperture is designed.
    As for your item 3 all versions of a master will be in the project that contains the master so seeing if a master has multiple versions isn't a major problem. If you allow Aperture to name your versions then each new version will have Version x attached to the image.
    As a last resort each version having the same master will also of course have the same file name, so you could do a search or smart album on that.
    Of course as Corky wrote the master first goes into the Aperture trash and from there to the system trash so it takes a lot of work on you're part to really delete the master off the system.
    On minor correction to what Corky wrote:
    Note - if you deleted a version that is not deleting a Master file, then there won't be any file moved to the Finder trash.
    This is not correct. The version you delete will show up in the trash even if there are multiple versions of a master

  • Cannot delete images from LR 5

    First, my setup:
    LR 5.3
    New 2013 iMac with 3T fusion drive
    OS X Mavericks
    I migrated all of my apps, files, etc from a 2007 iMac, following Apple's procedure. To take advantage of the speed of the fusion drive, I moved my image files from a La Cie external drive to the iMac's fusion drive. (Yes, I am backed up, triply backed up with both external backup drives and cloud backup.) There were a few hiccups, but I straightened them out and now can access every one of my images, process, etc.
    But...since the migration and importation to the iMac internal fusion drive, I cannot delete images. When I'm sorting, I use the X key to mark images for deletion. Then, when I use the standard cmd-delete key combination, I get the standard window offering me the option of just removing the image from the catalog or deleting it from the disk. When I select the latter (since I don't want rejected images clogging my hard drive), a new window appears: The file named "___" could not be moved to the trash folder."
    The problem occurs only since the migration and moving of the images to the new drive.
    I have tried numerous fixes suggest in various forums—create a new folder, then delete it to create a channel for LR; check permissions; repair permissions; run various commands through terminal. It's maddening because I sometimes reject a few hundred images at a time, and there's simply no reason to retain them on my drive. Any help will be much appreciated and rewarded with a dram of virtual single-malt scotch.

    You're right, Suzanne, I had...or so I thought. I had checked at too high a level in the folder hierarchy. When I drilled down, I found the last two levels of folders didn't even have me listed as an owner. Odd. What I found, to my delight, was that I could change permissions on the master image folder, then instruct that those changes be applied to all folders within the master folder. Solved the whole problem.
    So Suzanne, Geoff, even though neither of you directly provided the solution, your answers got me to check a couple of things that turned up the problem and the solution. So thanks!

  • IPhoto preferences - delete images from camera after upload???

    Is there a preference setting in iPhoto 6 to delete images from my camera's card after upload? Can't find it...

    Hi, buzzworms. Yes, it's there — but don't use it.
    Too many users of iPhoto have selected that option and then had an import go awry for some reason, only to discover afterward that even though the pictures weren't successfully imported, the card was erased and the pictures were gone.
    Much better to leave that option deselected, so the contents of your card aren't changed by your Mac whether or not they've been imported successfully. It's free insurance against the loss of your pictures. Erasing the card in your camera only takes a moment after you've confirmed that the pictures are safely stored in iPhoto's library.

  • IPhone 4 - deleted images, after got low memory error msg rcvd, but available memory has not increased!!

    I have an iPhone 4 16GB. Was recording a video the other day, and got this msg: "Warning: You are running out of disk space. Please delete some photos or videos". Ok, so I had like 5,000+ images in my "camera roll", don't have any other folders. ALOT were from the Internet, when I would hold down on an image, and pick "save image". So, using common sense, I went into camera, under camera roll, then hit arrow icon in bottom left corner, and proceeded to check mark images. Once I had a group, I'd hit delete. I did this several times, until I was left with only about 1/2 the amount of images, which was about 3,000. I rebooted my iphone. I then went into settings> general> about, and looked under available, which still showed only about 100MB available out of 14GB. How is this possible? Now, when I go into camera, the lense won't even open, and I keep getting the same error msg. Maybe 3,000 is still alot, but remember, I had almost 6,000 images before, with NO problems till just a few days ago. So, how do I get my iPhone available memory back, if already deleted images, as instructed???

    You need to connect the iPhone to the computer and import those photos to the computer. Photos are not really supposed to be stored in the camera roll as it can cause problems, as you have already seen. Also, should the iPhone crash, you could lose all of the photos without having a backup of them. Once you have downloaded all the pictures, you should be able to go into Explorer and delete everything out of that folder. Then reset the iPhone and it should clear the memory. The iPhone is probably holding the memory because the Library hasn't updated. A sync would help as it tends to reset things. I've read of other issues with keeping too many photos in the camera roll and issues with saving from the Internet as well, however much of that was in earlier versions of iOS. I believe that has been corrected.
    Once you have imported the photos and deleted them from the camera roll, you can sync them back through iTunes in the Photos tab if you want them on the phone.

  • Deleting images/files in harddisc, aperture 3

    Hello smart ones,
    I'm having a tough time figuring out how to delete images in Aperture 3. I mean delete as in get rid of completely, not just in aperture library or such. I've been searching the blogs, net, discussions, etc, and trying and trying without success.
    So. I need space in my harddisc and I imported "everything" in the beginning, and now it would be very easy to clear up some space w/aperture. I just cannot find a way to delete a version(s) and a master, so that it would also delete the actual file in the disc (in finder, sort of).
    I actually tested the method of deleting the file in finder, but aperture still had it somehow ?!? Even restarted it but the photo was still there, eventhough the actual file was in the trash (=system trash).
    If any of you have knowledge, I would be really happy !
    Thanks in advance,
    Teemu
    Finland

    You're image didn't display.
    What this all means is you have a messed up installation. If you imported as you say you did (in their current location) and you can see the masters in the finder OUTSIDE of the Aperture library package but Aperture shows you no images if you search for referenced images then something is seriously messed up beyond having to delete files twice.
    If all you've written is correct then I would suggest you stop normal operations and try to find out what is going on because what you got ain't right.
    Have you run the Basic trouble shooting steps? That would be a good place to start. Also make sure you have a working backup.
    good luck

  • Mistakenly deleted Image.dll . . . How do I (re)install?

    I just bought a Lenovo 3000 H desktop, with the face-recognition security software. I downloaded an anti-spyware software, and it prompted me to delete "Image.dll." Now, since doing so, the facial recognition software doesn't load. (I get an error telling me that Image.dll is missing.)
    Any suggested fixes? The computer otherwise seems to work fine if I ignore the error, but that's not too satisfying.

  • Accidently deleted images

    I tried to make space on my HD,deleted images from my pictures folder and then deleted them from the trash. These deleted images from my iPhoto Library. How do I get them back. Desperately need help with this, as all copies of these images are back in South Africa, and although I can get them sent to me in Ireland, it will take too much time. Any help will be greatly appreciated.
    Powerbook G4   Mac OS X (10.4.2)

    I used an application called Data Rescue II, that I purchased for the specific purpose of recovering my Iphoto library. I don't know if its the best application out there for it, but after a bit of jury-rigging it did the trick for me. Some photos were corrupt, but 99% of them were recovered without much problem. It was a pain, and a lengthy process...but they were the only copies I had. You might give it a shot, unless someone has a better suggestion. Good luck. ^.^

  • Help--how to find a deleted image

    Somewhere along the line I deleted a very precious master taken in August of 2007. When I look in my backup vault (on a Quadra external HD), I see a folder called "d2 Quadra deleted images." Inside are countless folders (and folders within folders within folders) often leading to a single image. I can open the image at the end with Preview but it would take me months to examine every image I've deleted looking for this one. Is there a shortcut? thanks, Mike

    welcome to the forum ...
    have you emptied your trash since you deleted it ??? if not, it could be right there ...
    else, use spotlight and search the deleted images folder for some specific criteria that image is known to have ... restrict the date to Aug of 2007 and you be able to narrow, then you can display in icon view and see the thumbnails ...

    here error coming "DEL IS NOT IN THE CURRENT CONTEXT"
    I have to change anything .Will It work alright?
    pls help me
    Sms

    Hi Fresherss,
    Your del is Local Variable, it can't be accessed out of the if statement. you need to declare it as global variable like below. And if you want to collect the string, you could use the List to collect, not a string.  the string will be split to chars
    one by one.
    List<string> del=new List<string>();
    for (int j = 1; j <= b; j++)
    if (arrays[j].ToString() != arr[j].ToString())
    del.Add(arrays[j].ToString());
    else
    foreach (var value in del)
    string filePath = "G:\\Projects\\Images\\" + value;
    File.Delete(filePath);
    If you have any other concern regarding this issue, please feel free to let me know.

  • How do I delete images in Finder's "all my Files" when I have the same pictures in a file in Documents? It seems like a lot of duplication. If I delete the individual image it disappears in the folder. Thank You.

    How do I delete images in Finder's "all my files" without deleting the images in a separate folder I have in Documents? It seems to be so much duplication. Just set up our new Mac and am not understanding how the files work. Thank you.

    All My files is a "search folder"
    it isn't real storage location. All files within your home folder are found by the criteria set for the search folder and displayed to you In one place.
    If the folder doesn't meet your needs, remove it from the sidebar.
