Is it true that Macbook Air is no longer allowed on planes?

The story you likely read was about a hack into Macbook Pro batteries that could theoretically be used to make one explode.
http://www.forbes.com/sites/andygreenberg/2011/07/22/apple-laptops-vulnerable-to -hack-that-kills-or-corrupts-batteries/
The hack requires physical access or a theoretical malware attack.  The researcher did not attempt to explode a battery and these batteries are designed to "blow a fuse" in the unlikely event of quick discharge so the likelihood of it exploding, even if you tried to do it, is extremely small.
Unfortunately, our news media likes splashy headlines not the truth.  "Hacker can make MacBook batteries shut down" is nowhere near as exciting as "Simple Hack Causes MacBook Batteries to Explode"

Is it true that MacBooks have to have their batteries " serviced " after 3 years- if so, where would I get it done?

It would help to know which one of the 9 different models of MacBook you have. To see which model you have go to the Apple in the upper left corner and select About This Mac, then click on More Info. When System Profiler comes up check the Model Identifier and post it back here.
Go to the Apple in the upper left corner and select About This Mac, then click on More Info, then select Power from the left hand column of the System Profiler. Copy and paste the Battery Information from the top of the page back here.

  • Why is my MacBook Air taking so long to connect to wi-fi at home and at work?

Why is my 18-month old MacBook Air taking so long to connect to wi-fi at home and at work?  Behavior started a few weeks ago.  Connection used to be acquired in about five seconds, now takes 30 or more.  Both networks WPA-2.

Reatart the router . Wait until all the lights are lit up.
    Restart the computer.

  • HT2792 Just purchased from an airport store the MagSafe Airline Adapter so I could use my MacBook Air on a long haul flight. But, the airline adapter plug doesn't fit the socket. Am I missing something?

I purchased at the airport last week before a long haul flight the MagSafe Airline Adappter so I couod keep working on the MacBook Air without fear of the battery running out before I had completed the necessary work. The shop assistant assured me the kit worked on all planes but......the socket on the flight, both outbound and inbound, was the normal female 2 pin/3 pin socket that I used to use for my old thinkPad. What am I doing wrong? Am I missing something obvious here
Thanks for any help you can offer.
    Geoff

    Hi CaptFred,
Thanks for taking the time to respond. I understand your point and have indeed separated them. Since sending the message I have visited the Apple Store to check the picture of the accessory in case I was missing something and I wonder if I am missing the 20mm adapter but, over and above that, I just dont see the right size/shape empower port socket in the plane seat, only the traditional 3 pin/2 pin sockets. I wonder if the salesman was selling me a pig in the poke because the Apple Store also says that it fits some commercial airlines whereas the salesman told me it worked in all flights. I suspect I will need to go to the airline companies direct to see which planes have this particualr Empower port. In the meantime I am tempted to ask for my money back. Geoff

  • Macbook Air can no longer find camera

Kinda goofy, but I had covered the camera on my Macbook Air  (v. 10.7.5) awhile back and now Photo Booth, Ichat, and Skype all say that the camera is not connected.  (I did remove the cover first!)  Have tried all recommended fixes.  Thoughts?

Sorry, wasn't thinking--all the fixes listed at the link below.  Wasn't sure how long to hold down Shift-Control-Option-Power, so I tried for at least 25 seconds.

Intel-based Macs: Resetting the System Management Controller (SMC)
In some situations, you may need to reset your computer's SMC.  Learn how to identify these conditions and reset the SMC.
Note: It is possible that the SMC could encounter an issue that may cause  unusual system behavior typically related to the symptoms described  below.  In some cases, resetting the SMC may be the only correct method  to resolve the issue, however, an SMC reset should only be attempted  after all other standard troubleshooting has been performed.
    Before Resetting the SMC
Try each of the following steps in this order before you reset the SMC.  Test the issue after completing each troubleshooting step to determine if the issue still occurs.
Press Command + Option + Escape to force quit any application that is not responding.
Put your Mac to sleep by choosing the Apple () menu from the upper-left menu bar and then choosing Sleep.  Wake the computer after it has gone to sleep.
Restart your Mac by choosing the Apple () menu from the upper-left menu bar and then choosing Restart.
Shut down your Mac by choosing the Apple () menu from the upper-left menu bar and then choosing Shut Down.
If your Mac appears to be running normally but isn't responding, force the computer to shut down by pressing and holding the power button for 10 seconds. Note: You will lose any unsaved work in any open applications.
For Mac portables experiencing issues related to the MagSafe power adapter and/or battery, try:
Unplug the MagSafe power adapter from the Mac and the wall power socket for several seconds.
Shutdown the Mac.  Physically remove and re-insert the battery (if it's removable) and startup the Mac.
If the issue is still not resolved after following the troubleshooting items above, an SMC reset may be necessary.
Resetting the System Management Controller (SMC)
Resetting the SMC on portables with a battery you should not remove on your own
Note: Portable computers that have a battery you should not remove on your own include MacBook Pro (Early 2009) and later, all models of MacBook Air, and MacBook (Late 2009).
    Shut down the computer.
Plug in the MagSafe power adapter to a power source, connecting it to the Mac if its not already connected.
On the built-in keyboard, press the (left side) Shift-Control-Option keys and the power button at the same time.
Release all the keys and the power button at the same time.
Press the power button to turn on the computer.
Note: The LED on the MagSafe power adapter may change states or temporarily turn off when you reset the SMC.

  • Since installing Maverick my MacBook Air is no longer showing my external Hard drive, which I connect via USB.

I know the external hard drive is working and the USB port works also.
I have seen lots of complicated answers on here but nothing I can understand.
    Any help appriciated.
    Lesley

The WD hard drive itself is probably fine, the enclosure has likely failed. WD externals are notorius for cheap enclosures failing. Try a different cable first. You can take the drive out and install it in a better enclosure, like one from OWC.

  • I'm trying to use my older Acrobat 4 for printing files from an older Macintosh with system 9, so that I can store and use the pdf documents in a newer MacBook Air, with OSX 10.9.  Acrobat 4 worked previously but no longer works.  Any way to fix it?

I am trying to transfer older files from a Mac PowerBook G4, running system 9, printing those documents as pdf, using Acrobat 4.  Then those pdf documents will transfer to my newer MacBook Air, running OSX 10, allowing me to store and use them.  My problem is that Acrobat 4 no longer seems to work on the old Mac, and I don't know how to fix it.  Can anyone give me some suggestions?

You never know, someone might remember. What happens in detail when you try to use it, and HOW are you trying to use it?

  • No video output from MacBook Air micro DVI to Polaroid HDTV via DVI to HDMI

Grrr! What's going on? The Apple online store finally sent me a micro DVI to DVI adapter and a DVI to HDMI adapter cable as well as headphone output to RCA adapter cables (for separate audio, since DVI will not transmit audio) and I hooked it up and - NOTHING! When I initialize the appropriate input setting on the Polaroid 27"HDTV the MacBook Air seems to get some sort of query signal as its screen flickers for a moment and turns to a grey screen for a couple seconds but then, that's it! Nothing! The Polaroid's screensaver remains and no signal, audio or video, is transmitted. Now, the micro DVI to DVI adapter is Apple proprietary so I don't think it is a DRM related issue where the chip might block the video signal coming out of the MacBook Air. The longer, DVI to HDMI adapter cable is by Belkin. Am I overlooking something? Could the new 27" Polaroid HDTV not be compatible with DRM protocol? I don't think so since all digital TVs equipped with an HDMI input are supposed to have DRM compatibility built in. What gives?

Well, BSteely, where to begin? After my extensive discussions with more than one support engineer at Apple in Toronto as well as in Austin an interesting picture is emerging. Seems that I'd omitted a few things: First, I was not trying to display HD content but rather standard definition content. Second, I made the mistake hoping for an elegant and easy solution in hookup via HDMI (new flatscreens don't even have a DVI port anymore) - bad mistake! As one of the technicians put it, HDMI is an "unsettled" platform when it comes to HDCP, currently in version 1.4 , meaning, I should have tried VGA instead, a "settled" platform after all. Now, whether this will work remains to be seen because I don't have a micro DVI to VGA adapter yet but suffice to say that in essence I've been getting the message from Apple that, yes, the MacBook Air will - in the near future - support HDCP, but for now it does not contain the necessary software simply because HDMI is in its forth incarnation; plus, as they put it, Apple can't be responsible for testing compatibility with every single HD television set on the market - while it is true that there are thousands in existence, at the same time there are only four versions of HDMI with different HDCP specs! So, while I may be partially answering my own query here, it seems that Apple at this point is not particularly eager to make this software available because they rather would like to sell their new displays with the micro DVI ports instead of us endusers being able to hook the computer video signal up to just ANY monitor or TV. In the end, it is my hope that they will reconsider and not forget who their customers are, maybe after the Christmas season....

  • Does macbook air work only 6 years?

I've heard that macbook air works only 6 years. Is it true?

Here's another tidbit ... note the original MacBook Airs which are now 4.5 years old will not be capable of running Mountain Lion when it comes out later this month.  This is a typical behavior from Apple - note they're doing the same with the original iPad and iOS6.
This behavior is, of course, quite different from the machine simply no longer working after 6 years.  But it's not expected that folks keep them that long.

  • Bluetooth via iMac, iPhone & MacBook Air

Prior to downloading Yosemite and updating all three of my devices (iMac, iPhone 5s & MacBook Air) I was able to connect the devices via Bluetooth and they remained connected, but now I attempt to connect them and for a brief second they connect then disconnect.
Some times something will pop up that will tell me that connection to the Network Failed, other times connection to the network was not authorized and other times it won't say anything at all. I thought perhaps it was just with my iPhone, but found that it was true with MacBook Air as well.
I am trying to utilize the Hand-Off feature, but obviously it won't work without Bluetooth enabled.
    Please help me!

Ok. Then how does Hand-Off work? Everything I read to help remedy the problem I am having with Hand-Off not working describes ensuring you are signed into the same iCloud account, check; on the same network, check; and bluetooth is activated and pared on and to each device, no check.
Also, how is it that you can make and receive phone calls through your iMac and MacBook without tethering your phone!?
