Is it true? You can't use video iPod as a hard drive?

I can't believe that Apple would reduce the functionality of a new product, but I have heard that due to the absence of firewire, you actually can't use the new video iPods as hard drives.
Does anyone know if this is really true?
Half the reason for buying the 60G is to be able to backup files that are too big for a DVD...

I had reported in another thread that the long and short of it is that USB2 and Firewire 1394a are virtually the same, with differences. See this website for more info than you'll need. http://www.directron.com/firewirevsusb.html
Bottom line is that there is little difference regarding speed.
Hope this helps!

  • Can I use my iPod as a hard drive?

In addition to listening to music and looking at photos, I would like to use my iPod as a hard drive. I was able to set the switch to do this on my Mac Powerbook in iTunes. But I want to transfer some files to my desktop PC. I don't want to put the same music on my PC and Mac! I never use the PC to listen to music. But I would like to use the harddrive feature. I'm afraid that if I try to connect to the PC using iTunes it will erase my music and make me start all over again. Is there any way to set a switch on the PC so it can see the files on the the iPod?

In case your iPod has been used initially on your Mac:
If you want to use your Mac formatted iPod as ext HD on a Mac as well as on a Windows PC you will loose all your iPod content once, as your iPod has to be re-formatted on a Windows PC using the latest Windows-Ipod-Updater.
Having done so - although not supported by Apple - your Windows formatted iPod will work on a Mac as well as on a Windows PC.

  • I have an 2tb time capsule 802.11n Wi-Fi base station can I use this as an external hard drive and use a new airport extreme  802.11ac Wi-Fi for my wifi?

You can use the 2 TB Time Capsule as a network drive. That means that it must connect to one of the Ethernet LAN <--> ports on the new AirPort Extreme, or connect to the network using wireless.

  • Can i use applications from an external hard drive?

Can i use applications from an external hard drive?

Photoshop itself needs to reside inside of it's Applications folder so that it has access to it's Libraries and plugins. So if you are going to attempt to store and run it from an external drive you need to copy the whole Application folder or install it directly to the external drive. Even still I am not 100% positive it will work as I know it still needs to access your Library/Application Support for additional files and licensing.
Why do you want to run Photoshop from an external drive?

  • Can i use time capsule as another hard drive?

Can I use time capsule as another hard drive?

You can, but it was not really designed for that purpose. Access to files will be quite a bit slower than a drive that is directly attached to your computer.
The Time Capsule's main function is as a back up device using the Time Machine application.
If you are using it already for Time Machine, it is generally not a good idea to mix Time Machine backups and regular files on the same drive as there will be struggle for space when the drive starts to fill up.

Can I use a non apple wireless hard drive with time Machine?

Some NAS (network storage) systems do claim to support Time Machine, with varying levels of success. For example, the Synology units have this feature. They're not officially supported by Apple, though.

  • Confusion: Can I use my TC as external hard drive w/iMac G5 running 10.4.11

    HELP!
I am using an iMac G5 with 10.4.11
I have managed to set up my time capsule as an airport base station, but cannot seem to find any way to use it as a wireless hard drive on which to store my pics/music etc. Although I installed all the airport software etc when I started, I was presented with no options to backup my G5 hard drive at any point and can find no way to do this - I have read the forum responses that seem to relate to this theme that I can find but they dont make sense to me. Please help!

If you have already installed AirPort Utility, go to Manual Setup->Disks->File Sharing->Enabled. You may enter a password. Now you can use your HDD in TC.
You mentioned an option to back up your G5 hard drive. What do you mean by that? If you are talking about Time Machine, that is only available on Leopard. How are you backing up currently?

  • Can I use Time Capsule as external hard drive?

I've been getting "your startup disk is almost full" message, so I bought myself a Time Capsule on the advice of a friend.  My question is...can I store stuff on my Time Capsule instead of my laptop?  And if so, can my computer access the info in the Time Capsule?  Specifically....if I don't have my music library stored on my computer, will iTunes still be able to access my library if I want to play some music, AND would my Sonos system be able to access it?
If I've just wasted 400 bucks on something I didn't really want....what SHOULD I get to store stuff on but that I can still access via iTunes, or my Apple TV, etc?
    Thanks for any help, everybody!

    1. You can, but are better off putting it on a regular external drive and using the Time Capsule for backups and as a router.
    2. Yes.
    3. Launch iTunes with the Option key held down and choose a library on it.
    4. Noting #1, a regular external drive. You can generally use any USB one, but ones not specifically intended for Macs will need to be reformatted first.

  • Can i use it as a normal hard drive?

I have a pc and I wanted to know that if I could use it as a normal external hard drive?

No, the Mac's ability to start in target disk mode is not available in a PC. So that gets rid of that one.. !
But there is a big difference between external drive and network drive.
You can connect to the PC as a network drive.. and use shared resources..
Just google network sharing Mac PC. In quick terms.. share a directory on the PC.. figure out permissions.. ie everyone access or if it has to be username and password figure out a common network credentials.. is easier than figuring out logins every time.
In finder use go, go to server, and type in SMB://PCname or PCIPaddress if it is static.
Now you can copy files to and from the directory.
You cannot use it for TM.. as that requires HFS+ format and time machine extensions for AFP being available.
USB or firewire external drives are so cheap.. other than sharing for backup just buy a drive.

  • Using your ipod as a hard drive

Hi there! I am hoping that someone out there who has an ipod can answer a question for me. I am a PC user. I'm looking into buying an IPOD, but I want to use it for more than just music. Essentially I want to use it as an external hard drive. Can you save any type of file on the ipod? can you use it for music at the same time? (so part of it holds and plays music and the other part stores data) if anyone has any information on this I'd appreciate it! thank you!

Yes, you can put any type of file which you can use on your computer onto your iPod, as long as the file is smaller than 4GB. It is possible to use an iPod for data and music at the same time as long as the iPod is in either FAT32 or HFS+ format; all iPods ship in one of those two. More information is available in this article.

  • I have 2 macs and 2 PC laptops in my home wireless network.  Can I use the Airport/Time Capsule hard drive to back up all 4 machines?  I know that I will have to use different back up software on the PCs, but is it possible over the wireless network?

I have 2 macs and 2 PC (Windows 7) laptops in my home wireless network. (The iMac is hardwired via ethernet to the Airport/Time Capsule; the others are wireless connections using Airport).  I want to use the hard disk drive in the Time Capsule as a network backup drive for all 4 computers.  Is this possible?  Could someone help me by telling me how to configure it?  I know I will have to use different backup software in the 2 Windows 7 Laptops?  Do I need to use the Windows backup software, or can I use a third party program like Acronis True Image?  Thanks in advance for the help

It is your fault, pondini.. all your fault.
I read of all the things that go wrong restoring Time Machine backups.. particularly stupid things like mail, photo libraries don't go back.. etc. And looking through the incredible number of issues people have here, when their Mac finally takes a dive how hard it is to restore.
I restored a test hard disk from a TC.. and it takes ages and ages to even make up its mind to start.
I worked in computer support for ages, but not Macs.. so my experience is ghost.. ghost images.. on large commercial server setups, can stream restore to multiple computers at once.. even doing it computer by computer the image is simple as network boot to restore. But ghost went the way of Symantec.. sigh!! And was destroyed.
A product like clonezilla, Free linux boot cd.
    http://lifehacker.com/5078397/clonezilla-backs-up-and-restores-your-disks
Can backup a Hard disk in just about any format.. yet to try it on a Mac to a TC.. but I will. Boot from CD.. instead of your lost Lion partition which no longer exists (because the hard drive had to be replaced) and the DVD they no longer give you, and restore the entire hard disk in a couple of hours .. to the exact image at the point you made the clone.. in any format, with any partitions.
My bet is that it will kill TM .. but you could be right.
It is just the prospect of all those permission changes, photos and mail libraries etc that worry me.

  • Can I use files from a portable hard drive

I have a project I need to edit
All the files are HD and supplied on a portable USB3 hard drive.
I can import them into final cut pro, but when I go and try to share the project or send it to compressor the options are all grey out?
Do I need to save to files to my main hard drive or to a proper "powered" hard drive?
I'm using most recent version of FCP on an iMac 27" running Yosemite...
Thanks for your help in advance...

Hello - okay the library files were on the external portable HD.
After having no luck whatsoever with exporting the documents out, I tried moving just the files i needed to the main HD. But still I have no luck sharing anything, the menu items are still greyed out. The library is in the Movie folders in the user's folder
Attatched is a screen shot as requested
I hope this helps with an answer...
    Thank you...

  • Can I use the time capsule internal hard drive for file storage?

Can I configure the Time Capsule internal HD to function as a network file server as well as handling time machine backups?
Can the internal HD be partitioned?

This is asked several times a day.. obviously people are struggling with their latest SSD being too small.
The TC is not suitable for network file server.. but many people having no choice press it into service as such.
It cannot be partitioned. It was and is and ever shall be a backup device for Time Machine.
    Major issues.
    1. No backup.. no way Time Machine can backup a network drive. No place to backup to.. So all your files will be at risk. And you will need to buy a third party like CCC to do backup.
    2. The TC cannot be partitioned and mixing TM backups and data is not great.
    3. The drive is slow to spin up and quick to spin down.. there is no controls.
    4. iPhoto in particular can easily corrupt its entire library with wireless networking causing a disconnection to one photo. Even if you do this;;; do not move your photo library... you have been warned!!
    5. iTunes will constantly lose connection to the library. The disk is too slow to respond.. itunes on the computer will constantly spit out errors. Even in the midst of streaming the TC can spin down the disk due to caching.
    6. Do not use any live files on the TC no matter what else you do.. if you edit files in whatever program the file must be on the local hard disk.
    7. The only suitable location for most libraries is a computer. You can plug in an external hard disk.
Read pondini for some work arounds.

  • Can i use time capsule as external hard drive for both mac and windows

I have a mac book pro, ipad and iphone and ipod and a windows pc
Can i use time capsule as a external hard disk only for all of the above ( including windows ) without the back up activity for mac ?

You cannot access the TC from iOS devices without a browser. eg filebrowser.
Can i use time capsule as a external hard disk only for all of the above ( including windows ) without the back up activity for mac ?
Yes, with the following proviso.. the TC is not able to back itself up.. so if you store files on the TC without backups one day you will discover all your files are gone because of a hard drive failure of the TC. TM also cannot backup TC.. so you will need to buy a proper backup software.
It is also much slower than a real NAS..
And windows can be a bit painful.. especially windows 8.. other versions should work if you spend the time getting everything set right.

  • Can I use my old laptop's Hard drive with a PC?

    Hello,
i bought myself an apple laptop in summer 2004. I stored a year's worth of files, projects, pictures, docs, songs... The motherboard died 4 months ago.
Fast forward... I now use a PC (don t ask why) and I need to recover my files. I bought a container for 3 inch hard drives. It said it was mac and pc compatible, plug and play style with an usb cord. There is no software to install, it was supposed to work like a USB key. however, the PC didn t recognize it. I thought maybe it s because the file format is different on PC and WinXP, or maybe Tiger locked the hard drive... I don t have access to another ibook or powerbook to connect it to, so any other hints from you guys would be most helpful.
    Thanks.
    a 2004 12 ibook   Mac OS X (10.4.3)

Yes, you're right about the format of the disk. Out of the box, Windows XP can't read a Mac formatted-hard disk. You have two options... One, find another Mac to plug your hard drive into and see if you can't burn some of your files to CDs. A CD that the Finder burns should be both Mac and PC compatible. Or, two, purchase some software that will allow your PC to read a Mac formatted disk (the disk is probably formatted as a "Mac OS Extended" disk). It's $50, but will allow your PC to read a Mac-formatted hard drive.
