Is it worth getting an iPad 2 for university?

Okay, so I'm thinking about getting an iPad 2 with my xmas and birthday money.
I do already have a Compaq laptop, however, it is very heavy, very slow and crashed on me (went to blue screen) the other day, which makes me wonder if it'll last much longer.
My question is this: is it worth getting an iPad 2?
I am currently at university so feel that it'd be beneficial to my studies due to how light it is and how quick it is to fire up. I will still use my laptop for the typing up of long essays/assignments etc, however, an iPad 2 might be easier to take round university/record lectures more easily etc, however £399 is a lot of money to spend and I want to make sure I'm making the right choice.
I was just wondering if there were any people out there who have iPads/and who go to university who could offer any pros/cons to getting one that I may have overlooked, help me make up my mind?
Thanks

It's very much a 'your milage may vary' kind of thing. I went to school when high tech was having a handheld recorder so the thought of having a computer to type out notes is nothing but a theory to me.
I love my iPad, but people are right, it is NOT a computer. And it won't replace a notebook or netbook in functionality. It is a wonderful piece of tech, but to gain good typing speed and ability I know I need an external keyboard.
And then you look at the pricepoint, 500 + at least 100 more for a keyboard and case and such...and less than 400 for a netbook.....and it's up to each person to decide what works best for them.
I can afford the accessories and toys and the time to make them work, some can't.
I think if you're a person with the patience to make it work then it can work for you. If you're impatient with having to fiddle and tweak and find workarounds, then you may want to stick with a more common piece of tech and operating system.
You will have to find work arounds to make things print and to transfer files and compatibility with what your school may have.

Where can i get an ipad for free?

Go to a store that offers store credit for refunds.  Buy something that costs at least as much as an iPad.  Return that item for store credit.  Use your store credit to get an iPad.
Or do like everybody else who wants an iPad, and buy one.

  • I am a nursing student and would like to get an Ipad for textbooks. IS that possible?

I am a nursing student and would like to get an Ipad for textbooks. Is that possible? I want to be able to just carry and ipad around, as opposed to 7 or 8 textbooks.

I would also be certain that you get enough memory to keep nursing books.  I remember the books my sister had in nursing school and they were very heavy in pictures and graphics... which means they will take up a lot of memory space.  Be sure it can hold all your books.

  • Worth Switching Original iPad for iPad 2?

I got an original iPad in August and I really love it. Is it worth making the switch from that to an iPad 2? I have heard a lot of users on here voicing their problems with it, but is it a good choice to upgrade? I looked into the second one, and it seems really cool! And is there any way to sell my iPad and receive credit toward the new one?
    Thanks !

It depends on what you use your iPad for and what lacks, if any, you've found in the current model. Certainly the iPad 2 is faster, particularly for games or other graphically intensive apps, and new apps are already starting to appear or be announced that will take advantage of that extra speed. But if your needs are more to the productivity type - taking notes, doing email, web surfing and such - the performance improvements will probably be less noticable.
I have heard a lot of users on here voicing their problems with it
This is a technical support site, so what you're most likely to see are posts from people who are having problems. People who have no problems with their new iPads have little incentive to come here and post.
And is there any way to sell my iPad and receive credit toward the new one?
Of course you can sell your iPad, through any of the normal places you'd sell something. If, however, you are asking whether Apple will take your current iPad as a trade-in, no, they won't. There are places that will, but you'll probably get more for your current iPad if you sell it yourself.
So it comes down to your own needs and desires. Read all the information about the new model, its capabilities and performance, and then decide whether it's worth the cost to you.
    Regards.

  • Worth getting apple care for the Retina model?

Is it worth geting apple care for the Retina models? have read they can be dodgy...
Since I will have a one year warrenty could I just skip out on apple care untill a month before the warrenty expires as the warrenty will cover all my needs?

From the sounds of it, the Retina 2012 model is so not worth it. Have to agree completely with that.
If I was in the market for a new Mac it certainly would not be one of the Retina models. Way to expense for what you get and then there are all the problems with it.
You know I've been doing my work and having fun on computer for over 20 years and never needed a screen like the Retina to actually get things done and make some money.

  • How many Apple devices can connect to one account? If I get 2 iPads for my home can they get apps under the same account or different accounts?

I am wanting to purchase an iPad for myself and kids but I am wondering if they need to be setup under a different Apple account or just one. What about my iPhone that is under that account? So how many devices can be linked to an account before it is maxed out?

I'm not sure what the total limit is (or if there is one), but two iPads and one iPhone is no problem - you only need one account and you can have the same apps on all three devices if you want without any issues (I have an iPad, iPhone and iPod without problems). There was a thread a few weeks ago about a newspaper app (though it could have been a magazine), where the issue could only be downloaded to one device, but that is the only time I've heard about that limit.

  • Do you think it's worth getting an ipad mini or waiting for an ipad(5th gen)

I really like the retina display on the ipad (4th gen) but I also like the portability of the ipad mini.  Do you think it's worth waiting for the ipad (5th gen) or do you think it will still be significantly less portable than a mini despite it being thinner.

There is always a new model coming out, for better or worse. Which means if you always hold out for the newest and 'best' you'll always be waiting.

  • Is it worth getting an ipad mini or wait for next gen?

I have the money to buy the ipad mini right now, but what I'm wondering is if I should just wait and see if another generation comes out for the mini.

  • I need a movie on my ipad for university.

I have tried importing it via itunes, but when I select Add to Library and try to open my movie file, nothing happens. I have also tried simply dragging my movie file into itunes but still nothing happens. And yes, I am in the movie tab of itunes to begin with.
I have been trying to find other ways to import this film onto my ipad. I need to watch it for a university assessment and an ipad is easier than lugging my laptop around all day.
I have tried opening bluetooth and connection my laptop to my ipad and that worked... however, I cannot find a way to actually share anything. It just says my two devices are paired. Which is no real help to getting my film where it needs to be.
Can anyone help me? It is imperitive I watch this film and it's hard to sit at home with my laptop and do so when I am working constantly and studying in my spare time.

    - Send notes to home computer
    - Type easily
    - Open multiple sites at once
Any suggestions which model I should get?

I suggest a refurbished ipad2 64gb, specifically if you'll be using it for college.
My sons got netbooks for school two years ago. They had gotten excellent ratings. But they were very, very slow and didn't have a great battery life.
The MB Air would also be a great choice.
An ipad definitely cannot replace a laptop/desktop for your student needs. You cannot have MS Office or Excel on your ipad, and you'll need those for school. You can take notes on an ipad and transfer Word, etc. documents with apps like Pages. I don't know anyone who writes papers on ipads. There are many books, articles, pdf's, etc. that you can put in there or buy/rent electronically that will save you a lot of schlepping heavy books around. Many are required to get subscriptions to newspapers (at least in the business schools) and you can have all sent directly to your ipad and most also let you get them on your desktop or laptop. These will take up a good deal of your space.
My son got an ipad2 64gb before he started school (junior in college) a few weeks ago. He's used up about 22gb on mostly his music from ipod( about 3,000 songs!),lots of videos, and some apps for classes. He hasn't even downloaded any books or many games at all yet and I'm sure he will. We're glad he got the 64gb.The refurbished ipad 2  comes with a new outer shell, brand new battery, and full one year warranty from the Apple online store. It was $499.00, so, given the price, it was a simple decision to opt for a 64gb over 32gb ($399.)
If you're getting the new ipad, the apps will take up more space than previous ipads, and will add up in terms of used space. You'll also probably want music, movies, tv shows, etc. - more space.
You cannot add memory to your ipad, so I recommend getting as much as you can afford.
    Whichever you buy, enjoy it!

  • How can i find a grant to help a child with special needs non verbel get an ipad for free, how can i find a grant to help a child with special needs non verbel get an ipad for free

Hello I have a question and hope maybe someone can help I am look for a grant or some type of information on how I can get my  non verbal Autistic son a  IPad . I heard so much on how it help with school and other behavioral issue. We a very low income family and to purchase a IPad is way out of our budget since we don't have any extra funds for it ..I do good to get him what he needs and take him to doctors appointments. So please listen to a single mom pleas I just want him to thrive and be all he can be. Thanks from the bottom of my heart

I agree with the people who posted above.
I have questions for you --
    How old is your son?
Does he attend a school program?
What country, state, and city do you live in? (Your name above indicates you might be in NY.(?)
Has your child been diagnosed with autism so that he deals with a specialist? The doctor/medical facility you are connected with should be able to help you.
I did a quick google search and many groups came up. You can also get connected with many groups, such as your board of education, autismspeaks.org, hollyrod.org, nationalautismassociation.org, ...the list goes on.
If you google 'autism support groups' and 'autism support groups in (your city)' you might get to some groups that will steer you in the right direction.
    Hope this helps.

  • Is it worth getting the update for my Mac

I have a Mac Desktop which doesn't have the swipe options that the Lion update has? Is it worth buying for someone who has a Mac desktop computer with wireless mouse?

I like the "gestures" ... 1 finger move the mouse, 2 finger scroll, 4 finger "select running application".  You would want the "Wireless Trackpad" to get the gestures, though.
But Lion is a new world.  No install media, but a "Recovery Partition" that must be protected for disaster recovery.
And not everyone is happy with Lion.  I have no opinion good or bad because I do not use it, but the opinions range from "get it off my machine NOW!" to "I love it".
In the alternate, Snow Leopard has lesser requirements that Lion, and has "gestures".  Staying at SL is a good plateau to stay, since it still supports Rosetta to allow your PPC applcations (Office 2004, for example).  Many are quite happy to stay at SL until something better comes along.
For the benefit of others who want to provide input, you should tell us:
    Current model of Mac
    Memory amount
    Current OSX version
The path you take to Lion depends on where you are now.

  • Is it worth getting Antivirus software for may mac with this threat of the Flashback virus?

I'm concerned about my mac being infected bu flashback but I don't know if it is worth purchasing antivirus software or not

Well, if you applied Apple patches for 10.6.8 & up, then no.
Still pays to be certain with these tips...
Disable Java in your Browser settings, not JavaScript.
Flashback - Detect and remove the uprising Mac OS X Trojan...
    http://www.mac-and-i.net/2012/04/flashback-detect-and-remove-uprising.html
In order to avoid detection, the installer will first look for the presence of some antivirus tools and other utilities that might be present on a power user's system, which according to F-Secure include the following:
    /Library/Little Snitch
    /Developer/Applications/Xcode.app/Contents/MacOS/Xcode
    /Applications/VirusBarrier X6.app
    /Applications/iAntiVirus/iAntiVirus.app
    /Applications/avast!.app
    /Applications/ClamXav.app
    /Applications/HTTPScoop.app
    /Applications/Packet Peeper.app
If these tools are found, then the malware deletes itself in an attempt to prevent detection by those who have the means and capability to do so. Many malware programs use this behavior, as was seen in others such as the Tsunami malware bot.

DNS Servers are a bit like Phone books where you look up a name and it gives you the phone number, in our case, you put in apple.com and it comes back with 17.149.160.49 behind the scenes.
These Servers have been patched to guard against DNS poisoning, and are faster/more reliable than most ISP's DNS Servers.

  • Is it worth getting another iPad, or is it better to get a less flashy, less well-known product?

My iPad was just stolen while I was sitting in a public park.   I take responsibility for putting it down on the bench, my error.  I always keep it in my backpack when it is not in my hands.  Talking to the police and reading public announcements, I know it is best not to flaunt good electronics.
Since it is only wi-fi and not 3G, I could not track it using Find my iPhone.   I did hit the remote wipe instruction.
With that in mind,  I was wondering if I should get a non-Apple product that I can use in a park or carry in a subway and not worry about it being so desirable to thieves.  I loved my iPad, but if you can't relax with your tablet and to also use it for reading books or news, it loses some of its value.
In the same vein, I avoid taking out my iPhone on the subway and on the street.  Maybe it's better to get a Droid which isn't so attractive?
I thought I'd reach out to the true beleivers in the Apple Communities for your insights.
