Is it worth it?  ATI Radeon HD 5770 Graphics Upgrade Kit

Hey all. After several frustrating hours scouring the forums for information relating to graphics cards for early 2008 MP's, I thought I would just ask my question. Is it worth buying the ATI Radeon HD 5770 Graphics Upgrade Kit from the Apple store? What I mean is, is there a new graphics card option coming soon seeing as the 5870 seems to be "Unavailable" for ages.
I have heard rumours that Apple bought up all the ATI 5870's and ATI is re-branding and it's cheaper to buy a PC compatible card and flash it but I don't want to mess around with all that (I would have a windows machine if I did). I've checked newegg and OWC and they both only have the quadra card and there is no way I'm paying that much. I currently have the NVIDIA GeForce 8800 GT so any upgrade is good I suppose, I just always seem to buy something right before Apple releases the new version!
Any suggestions is appreciated thanks.

Hi-
Welcome to Discussions!
Is the 5770 worth it?
It's not a bad price for a card that runs circles around the 8800:
http://www.barefeats.com/wst10g6.html
Would be nicer if the 5870 was available.
It is billed as the Top Gun for Macs (currently), but the reported price makes it a dear upgrade.
As for the future, the 67xx and 68xx cards are in the pipeline, but, if as with the 57xx and 58xx, it may be almost a year before we see a Mac version....

  • MLink X + ATI Radeon HD 5770 Graphics Upgrade Kit

I am a great fan of the thunderbolt expansion chassis but a little bit doubtful because i don't have infinite money recourses and not a thunderbolt expansion news follower.
recently mLogic announced the mLink X which is a sort of cheaper less decorated mLink R as it seems, though a very good candidate for what i have in plans for it. I want to boost mu MBPr 13" with this expansion chassis using what every graphics card that is compatible. now I know Apple isn't the biggest supporter of external or by default any other graphics card they do not pick or sell them self, though their are a couple that do work with the Mac Pro.

    Hi and thanks for replying.
You have the same hardware? MacPro 2,1, 8-Core Xeon, 3GHz with 30" Cinema Display???

  • Reviews for ATI Radeon HD 4870 Graphics Upgrade Kit for Mac Pro?

There's no review at the Apple Store on this [ATI Radeon HD 4870 Graphics Upgrade Kit for Mac Pro (Early 2009 or Early 2008)|http://store.apple.com/us/product/MB999ZM/A?fnode=MTY1NDA5OQ&mco=NDE4NDMx OA]. Googled and found nothing related to the Mac kit. Mostly PC based.
Should I consider this card? I need a spare/replacement graphics card for my Mac Pro (early 2008). The NVIDIA GeForce 8800 GT card has failed me twice.

    Just came out on barefeats:
    http://www.barefeats.com/nehal14.html
Shows new drivers with 285, also compares 4870.
If you play a lot of games on the windows side, you might also want to consider the 4890. I has recently became flashable (if you're into that kinda thing). It has a lot more leeway to be overclocked. Close to (or if your lucky) hitting the 1 Ghz core clock speed, gives very close comp to the 285, and at fraction of the price. You can get an XFX 4890 on newegg for $195.

  • ATI Radeon X1900 XT Graphics Upgrade Kit?

Now that the Mac Pro computers are out, I notice this item on the Apple Store:
    http://store.apple.com/1-800-MY-APPLE/WebObjects/AppleStore.woa/6024003/wo/yM1ak LtbCNWR2gglp2xhMfPwmyk/10.0.19.1.0.8.25.7.11.0.3
Someone please tell me that this will work in pcie based PowerMacs like my Quad G5.
    please...

    Nope.
It will not work on your Quad.
Physically, the hardware is there and works. The card would be fully functional to a hardware extent with your Quad- but it is missing the Openfirmware PROM code in the ROM on the graphics card, so the G5 won't know how to initialize it nor will it recognize it as a Radeon X1900.
These cards have the EFI code on them for the new MP's. I believe it really comes down to an issue of EFI versus OpenFirmware code in the card's ROM, and Big Endian versus Little Endian byte ordering.
Apple just needs to get the OF compatible firmware and stick it in the X1900 card. Shouldn't take them too long to do that.

  • Is there a ATI Radeon HD 5770 Graphic card for 2-monitor use?

Hi, I just purchased a ATI Radeon HD 5770 Graphics Upgrade Kit for Mac Pro only to discover that there is only one VGI port for a monitor. I have been using two monitors for Final Cut work since I bought my MacPro tower in 2006. I need this new card to work with fxfactory 'pan and zoom' as a plug-in in Final Cut Studio. Does anyone know if Apple makes one with two VGI ports?
    Thanks very much, Bob

    What is VGI?
If you mean VGA - VGA is a VERY old connection type and the 5770 does not have a VGA port.
    Do you mean DVI?
The card has a dual link DVI and two mini DisplayPorts. If you mean you need a second DVI connection, get a Mini DisplayPort to DVI connector from Apple or a 3rd party converter supplier.

I was wondering if the Mac Pro ATI RADEON X1900 XT GRAPHICS UPG KIT compatible with the G5. I ordered two of these cards one for my office computer and home studio computer. But i also have a G5 i use.

No. They are different. Apple has a tech note on the subject. the Mac Pro is/requires EFI ROM, PPC G5 use Open Firmware.

  • ATI Radeon X1900 XT, Apple Upgrade Kit vs. BTO Option (Mac Pro 1,1) - Same?

This question pertains to the ATI Radeon X1900 XT Video Card, which Apple offered as a BTO Option for the Mac Pro 1,1.
In September 2007 I purchased my Mac Pro 1,1 (2x Intel Xeon 3GHz Woodcrest) and configured it from Apple with the ATI Radeon X1900 as a BTO Option.
Now I know that a number of people initially experienced some problems with this card, but mine has worked perfectly all along. I run FCP, Aperature, and Adobe CS3, and the X1900 has performed excellent.
    Leading to my question:
I own more than one Mac Pro 1,1. But the other two machines were not configured with the X1900. And for the past couple of years, I've been regularly searching to find (one or more) Genuine, Original Apple ATI X1900 XT Video Cards - either for sale by someone who has pulled out the X1900 from their Mac Pro 1,1; or, from an Official Apple Reseller. However, all that I've been able to find are - what appear to be either a "knock-off" third party version of the X1900 (flashed for Mac Pro), or; people and/or resellers who claim they are selling a Genuine, Original Apple ATI X1900 XT; except there's one major difference between all of those other video cards, and my X1900 (BTO from Apple, Mac Pro 1,1).
My X1900 does not have an S-Video Port. However, all of the other X1900 cards I've seen advertised for the Mac Pro are pictured with an S-Video Port - which again, mine does not have one.
I've spoken with both Apple Technical Support and Apple Care Representatives (Sr. Advisors), and I've asked them whether it's possible to identify a Genuine, Original Apple X1900; either by the serial number, or possibly by an Apple Part Number.
The Mac Pro 1,1 "Tech Specs" are listed on Apple's Support Site (support.apple.com/kb/SP30). Here, Apple does provide an Apple Part Number for the X1900 as an upgrade (MA631Z/A); however, nobody from Apple can tell from that part number - whether that Apple Part Number corresponds to an X1900 with an S-Video Port, or whether it's identical to the X1900 that was offered as a BTO Option for the Mac Pro 1,1; or whether that particular X1900 was part of an "Upgrade Kit" for the X1900 - which would've been available to purchase from Apple (Apple Store), sometime late in 2007 and/or early 2008. Further, I also know that Apple changed the actual Service Part Number a few times for the X1900.
What I'm trying to find out:
Has Apple ever directly sold, or, has Apple ever officially offered the X1900 w/ S-Video Port - under one of the following Apple Service Part Numbers (661-3297, 661-4335, 661-4911)??
    Sorry for the super-long post.
It's just that this has been bugging me for like two years.
    Thanks,
    John

When I write, I often find that I end posts with what I wanted to say. Put summary at top helps.

I don't know. I do know some X1900s are being replaced even if out of warranty, as are 2600s also.

  • Mac Pro 2008 and ATI Radeon HD 5770

According to many other threads in this forum the ATI Radeon HD 5770 graphics card is said to work fine with the Mac Pro 2008 (model no. 3,1) though the Apple Store lists the Mac Pro (Mid 2010) under system requirements. Well, before I’m going to upgrade my Mac against Apple’s will, I’m just curious to know if anyone has found out why Apple restricts the compatibility to Macs from mid 2010 on. Is there an issue that affects only a small number of machines? Or is there a software incompatibility popping up under rare circumstances? What is the reason for this? Why does Apple not grant downward compatibility?

Apple does marketing and doesn't do a bang-up job on writiing technical requirements on hardware upgrades and testing. It doesn't make sense, there is no reason for not just "works with 10.6.5 or later on ALL Mac Pro models."
something nice and clear and so avoids all the questions and discussion.

  • Radeon HD 5770 graphics card works perfectly with my MAC Pro 1,1 and Adobe CS6. However, Photoshop CC won't read the card drivers and says I need to reinstall them and disabled 3D funtions as a result. Anyone else with this issue?

Radeon HD 5770 graphics card works perfectly with my MAC Pro 1,1 and Adobe CS6. However, I upgraded to Adobe CC and Photoshop CC disabled some filters and 3D functionality. The preference panel for Performance/Graphics Card in Photoshop CC is greyed out and inaccessible and shows this message -
"Photoshop detected an error in your display driver. Update or reinstall the driver and check Use Graphics Processor to retry."
I still have Photoshop CS6 installed and it still works perfectly. Anyone else with this issue? Is there a driver update for this compatable with my setup?

after going round with this Adobe was able to find the fix....opened the "show content" folder for the application Photoshop CC (control click on the application folder) and navigate to the sniffer file and rename it by putting a tilda ~ in front of the name..." ~sniffer ", close and open PhotoshopCC...and voila, problem solved... • How good or bad is the ATI Radeon HD 5770 for Photoshopping?

I'm on the verge of upgrading machines for the first time in half a decade. My Opteron 180 is kinda obsolete and, well, falling apart.
I was leaning towards a Dell Studio XPS 9000. More specifically, an Intel Core i7 920 /w 12GB ram.
During the holidays, these machines came with a choice of nvidia or ATI card. For whatever reason, most of the nvidia options -- the 260 in particular -- have been removed from the build customizing options. In fact, with regards to this one deal I'm looking at this week, the only choice is the ATI Radeon HD 5770.
    Here's the link : http://www2.dell.com/ca/en/home/desktops/desktop-studio-xps-9000/pd.aspx?refid=desktop-stu dio-xps-9000&s=dhs&cs=cadhs1&~oid=ca~en~70702~studio-xps-9000-en-feat_3~~
Now considering what a great deal that is, and that I won't be gaming with this machine (so I don't much care about 3D performance), is there any reason why I *shouldn't* get this machine?
I keep hearing about nvidia / CUDA benefits. Are they really worth my passing up on this deal? Because other than the card being an ATI, this machine pretty much suits my Photoshopping / DAW (music) editing needs.
Am I making too much of an issue about the video card, considering we're talking about 2D performance here? One benefit I keep hearing about the 5770 over the nvidia GT260 is that the 5770 requires less power and is more silent.
    Opinions?
(PS: Before recommending I pass on this and order from X or Y or Z, please keep in mind I'm in Canada. The choices are different here, and the price you see at that link is CND.)

I am about in the same spot as you, trying to decide what machine to upgrade my woefully inadequate machine too.  I was considering a XPS 9000 however I have about talked myself into building one because I can get a much better motherboard with all sorts of eSATA3, USB3, dual-network-connection teaming and whatever else if I do that; however, it takes a bit of research to get things right and I am at the beginning of that process, so I may give up and fall back and go the Dell route after all.
If go with Dell, you can get memory for a bit cheaper than Dell will sell it to you so maxing it out at Dell may not be the most cost effective solution.  I mean it might be cheaper to go with the minimum RAM and then sell or trash it and buy your own 2GB chips.  Unfortunately Dell does not have a no-video-card option, but the HD 5770 is good card.
As far as ATI vs nVidia, ATI is the only one with DirectX 11 at the moment, which includes automatic tessellation for textures that have a displacement map.  I doubt Photoshop will care about that although new games will.
Here is the "Heaven" benchmark running on a $700 HD 5970 dual-GPU card, but the tessellation works on the newest cheaper ($150) ATI cards too.  The difference is most noticeable on the walls roof and stone pathways:
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rEnl8k6BcDs
Unfortunately Adobe has not given us guidance on what CS5 might need or can use as far as GPU support.

  • Is it better to have two ati radeon HD 5770 or one ATI radeon HD 5870 for video editing?

Is it better to have two ati radeon HD 5770 or one ATI radeon HD 5870 for video editing? I'm basing this question based on the current options when configuring a Mac Pro. Currently there are three options
    ATI Radeon HD 5770 1GB
Two ATI Radeon HD 5770 1GB [Add $250.00]
    ATI Radeon HD 5870 1GB [Add $200.00]
Between the second and third options I am wondering which will provide a better more productive experience for video editing. Such as using FCP or FCPX. I know how many monitors that are in use will affect the answer to this questions. While I'm more focused on which option will deliver a better video editing experience, lets just say for argument sakes that the Mac Pro is running a 30" cinema display and a small generic monitor. About 18". Its an older VGA monitor for web development.
I hope thats enough info to get an answer on this subject.
    Thanks

Ya in my research of this question, I came across this whole issue of Mac not being able to use CrossFire. I didn't thorugly investigate what this CrossFire issue was, but if it makes more sense with the singel 5870 rather than the 2 5770 then thats helpful to know.
If the Mac can't make the most out of two 5770 because it doesn't make use of CrossFire, it seems silly that Apple even bothers to offer it as an option. Plus its cheaper with the singel 5870 versus two 5770. Unless you really needed to run several monitors.
Thanks. This satisfies a long curiousity I have had.

Random unresponsive mouse, keyboard, and software when working in FCP.   The system would freeze and my only remedy was to shut down.   This would only happen when editing video.   I assumed my ATI Radeon 1900xt grapics card was the culrprit.
Ordered and installed the ATI Radeon HD 5770 upgrade from apple.  Trying to open FCP after the install, but FCP was blocked from opening for 3 reasons  1.  “Final Cut Pro requires that your system have 128 MB of VRAM; this system has only 0”   2.  Quartz Extream compatiblity and the minimim pixel height on my display was under under 800 (768)
I restarted the computer and reset PRAM (hold option, command, P & R keys down all together when you restart). Wait until you hear the second chime before releasing the keys.   This didn’t work.
So, I trashed preferences.  That didn’t work.
I opened up Applications, control click on FCP, “Show Package Contents”  Contents/Resources and opened "minsys.plist"  and set the minimum VRAM, Quartz Extream Capable, & Screen resolution all to “warn” instead of “block”.  This allowed FCP to begin it’s launch, BUT FCP  would then hang on the Looksuite Plugin and not open.
So, I then uninstalled LookBuilder & removed the plug in.  FCP would then open. BUT immediately after setting my timeline preferences to Apple ProRes 442 LT  FCP crashed with in seconds.
As a work around I tired creating a new user with admin privileges but to no avail.  FCP still crashes.   with this error “ Exception Type:  EXC_BAD_ACCESS (SIGBUS)
    Exception Codes: KERN_PROTECTION_FAILURE at 0x0000000000000000”
Any direction would be very much appreciated.

    > I purchased my rig with FCP and other programs already installed.  I don't have install disk's for FCP.  When I upgrade to SL, will I need to re-install FCP as well, or (assuming I have no other problems) can I upgrade the OS with out installing FCP again?<
The previous owner is going to be in trouble in the afterlife but you're going to be in big trouble when you attempt to upgrade FCP. You will be able to purchase FCPX, from what we can tell, without your serial numbers.
The general advice around here is to do a scroched earth total erase and install of everything when changing operating systems. In all my years of runing FCP on my Macs, I've never done that. I've alwyas just run the OS Update script and I have never had a problem with this method. I do, of course, make a clone of my system drive before attempting major changes.
If you do an intialization install when you get Snow Leopard, you will need FCP disks. Whoever you bought the rig from stole them from you.

  • Kernel Panic Since ATI Radeon HD 5770 was installed

    Hi
I have a Mac Pro 3,1. I recently installed ATI Radeon HD 5770 card powering 2 x Apple Cinema Displays. I also have 2 x ATI Radeon HD 2600 XT pwering 2 17" non Apple monitors.
Since installing the 5770, the Mac has regular kernel panics - at least once a day, sometimes several times. The Cinema Diplays which go blank - the other 2 just freeze. I've captured the log form the most recent one - pasted below. I'd appreciate any advice from any clever people!

Are yes - the Interlok dongle. That's for Pro Tools, which I can't live without. However, these kernel panics pre-date installing Pro Tools by some weeks, so I don't think that is causing the problem.
I have had another one today. Here is the problem report:

  • Installed a ATI Radeon HD 5770, now Final Cut Pro won't even open - says 0mb Vram?

Installed a ATI Radeon HD 5770, now Final Cut Pro won't even open - says 0mb Vram?  Only dvi port work the two mini's not at all.  Bad card?  Macpro 3,1

I would guess there is a a corrupt media in the project. You could also try to copy a part of it to new project which is shorter and see what happens. 5 Hours is extremely long. Best to divide it to smaller sections.

  • ATI Radeon HD 5770  Two 30 inch cinema display

i have early macpro 2008  and two 30 inch apple cinemadispaly DVI port. i just upgrade graphic card to ATI Radeon HD 5770 . i connect one display witgh DVI port and another 30 inche dispaly connect with mini display and DVI adapter . but one display(with mini display port) had only 1280X 800 resolution . dvi port connected display has original 2560X1600.  what is worong with this graphic card?  or do i need only connect with DVI port? for 30 inch display?  do i need second graphic card? to use Two 30 inch screen?
    someone help me?
i replaced  card because my old original  crad was dead . and i replaced to this HD 5770 which i thought would work after reading the review but i guess two 30 inche dispaly wont work with original resoultion ... hmmmm

You need a dual link dvi adapter for the mini-displayport.
Single link dvi adapters have a max resolution of 1920 x 1200. Dual link max resolution is 2560 x 1600.
The DVI port on the 5770 is dual link which is why you don't have a problem connecting as 30" to it.
    Examples:
Apple Mini DisplayPort to Dual-Link DVI Adapter
StarTech Mini DisplayPort to DVI Dual-Link Active Adapter – USB Powered
    Kanex C30
    These things aren't cheap!
