Is it worth it Jumping to Fireworks?

I have been working in Photoshop and Illustrator for designing my site layouts
and graphics.
Can I get some opinions on the benefits/drawbacks on jumping to Fireworks?
Does it increase the workflow or is the learning curve just going to outweigh the benefits?
On a side note I remember seeing a presentation put on by a rep of Adobe who was working with inDesign for his site layout.
Is this a valid option?
Thanks for your input!

Honestly I've uninstalled FireWorks as it's just too annoying when it opens up animated GIF files. I typically use Illustrator to draw out wireframes to scale (hurray for pixel measurements). Once I've got a good handle on the layout and/or client approval then it's a quick import into Photoshop to draw up the lipstick on it and make it look all pretty. There's honestly very little I slice out of the image. I use some background elements and framing usually. I can't stand the way Fireworks does the fly out menus. I'm a strong proponent of valid code and design through CSS. I would suggest that you invest your time and learning curve into learning good coding practices and some CSS. It will do wonders for your organic SEO rankings.

  • Q: For professional designers and art directors.

I'm looking to hear experiences and impressions about the latest MPs from professional users. Specifically, I'd love to hear from designers and art directors using the usual tools of the trade:
    • Adobe CS3 Design Premium Suite
    • Adobe After Effects
    • Quark
    • Extensis Suitcase Fusion
Will happily accept and consider input from others but iLife apps are not part of my work environment or consideration set.
    Now...
I'm currently using a Dual 2.5 G5 as my primary machine and a MBP 2.16 Duo as my mobile unit. I'm considering upgrading the G5 to a Mac Pro and am curious to hear about real world performance with respect to the world of design. Anyone willing to help a brother out?
For obvious reason I'd like an Intel processor so as I can take advantage of CS3 in all its glory. Sure, it runs fine on my G5 but I'm looking for the speed bump. In addition, I would like to add drives for storage and intend to run multiple OSs -- Windoze (spare the ridicule, I have my reasons) as well as a Linux flavor. I'm guessing I'll go ahead and throw five drives in the MP. Anyone else done that yet? Any upsides / downsides to be aware of?
In my current desktop I'm running 6.5GB RAM which is quite nice. In a MP I would imagine I'd install at least that much RAM. How much RAM are other pro users equiping their MPs with?
Apple offers a nice lineup of graphics card options. I'm not the dual monitor type, I prefer one large monitor. Based on that, what card might other users suggest as being my best bet?
To Quad or not to Quad. While the Dual Quad 3.0 processors makes the testeroserone in my body surge, will I notice the bump given the apps I run day to day? Is it worth the jump in price? Will Duos be better for my particular needs? I'm not much of a gamer so that can be eliminated from the mix.
Anything else I should consider as I look into possibly upgrading? I'm not in a hurry and have the luxury of waiting until after WWDC. Needless to say there may / may not be upgrades at that time. I'm not the type to whine if I buy today and they bump processor speeds tomorrow -- that's life.
Thanks to any and all for responses / advice / feedback.

  • * vs CS4

Just acquired an iMac 24 and ordered Fireworks CS4. Previously used FW 8 on a PC. Big difference, worth the switch?

Fireworks CS4 has quite a lot new features, compared to Fireworks 8!
(( I hear that Fw CS4 may be a bit unstable on MacOS 10.6 Snow Leopard, but I also hear most of the issues are now resolved. Anyway, you may not have a problem, so if Fireworks CS4 works fine on your Mac, then don't worry! ))
Fireworks has Pages + Master Pages, Layers (+ sublayers), and States, of course. Fw 8 had only Layers and States.
Fw CS4 has a new text engine (Adobe Type Engine, ATE) which has quite a new nice features (but one is missing: you cannot anymore make right-to-left text orientation in it! so you must know this before moving to CS4!)
There are also Smart Guides implemented, which may help you in your daily design work.
CS4 also better supports PSD files (open and save) and AI files (open).
9-slice scaling tool -- this is new to CS4 and helps me quite a lot, too.
Sure there are other improvements, too, but these are the ones I can think of, at first glance... Anyone else, to add something to my short list?
    Hope this helps you!

  • New MBP Video Question

I am on the verge of purchasing the new MBP... the decision lies in the graphics... anyone know how much better the 512MB 9600GT is as compared to the 256MB?... I realize jumping up would end up with the better 2.53 Processor... but I am unsure if whether the processor jump of 1.53 as well as the 512MB graphics is worth the jump of $273.12 (tax included)... what's everyone else's take on this?... I do plan on doing some gaming on this Mac, nothing too major since I have a desktop for gaming, but unsure as to whether the difference in cost is worth it... everything else as of yet is planned and looks like it will be 4GB of RAM with the 320GB HD... this is my final decision that needs to be made... please chime in... Thanks!

  • ITunes can't rip songs

I'm using the latest greatest iTunes. I ripped CD's all weekend with no trouble. I tried this morning with several CD's - all opened just fine and all the songs were identified correctly. When I go to rip the CD's (Import CD) - the song gets imported way too fast (it finishes ripping a song in about 2 seconds) and the song lengths show up in the LIbrary as either 0 seconds or 766 seconds - and they don't play properly. this happened exactly the same way for 4 CD's in a row.
I ran a CD Drive Diagnostic - didn't report any errors.
    What gives?

  • Should I upgrade to a 27" iMac from a 3.5 year old MacPro?

So I have a 3 and a half year old quad 2.66 ghz MacPro with 4 gb of Ram, and NVIDIA GeForce 7300 GT graphics with 256 mb of ram. It's time for an upgrade and I'm considering the 27" i7 iMac, with 8 gb of ram. I'm a professional photographer so most my work is in Photoshop and Lightroom. I know the computer will be good for what I do and I know of other photographers who use this set-up but I'm worried it won't be worth the jump from my MacPro to the iMac.
What does everyone think? Anyone else jump from a MacPro to the iMac? How is the performance of the iMac vs an older MacPro? Any insight is a help!
    Thanks!!

The current i7 iMac will stomp all over your old quad Mac Pro from a CPU and graphics card standpoint, so it's certainly an upgrade.
    But:
    1) As a pro, have you checked out the screen quality to be sure it's to your liking? Some folks don't get on with the shiny screen, but your old screen will also be usable of course (you'll need a mini-DisplayPort adaptor to connect it).
    2) It's been 10 months since the last refresh, so it's about time for a new one to appear. Hold off a couple of months if you can stand it. The Mac Pro's are even more overdue for an upgrade, too.
    3) If/when you do go ahead, don't get your RAM upgrade from Apple, know that Crucial are cheaper and have better warranty.

  • Tell me, is it worth jumping into Jaguar (from 10.4.10) ?

from all, that all of you in the brave new the jaguar world, have now experienced, do you recommend that this 10.4.10 questioner should make the jump ? is there enough to gain to offset the pain ?

Jaguar is Mac OS 10.2...10.5 is Leopard. Regardless of what anyone recommends, if you think you can benefit from the added features of Leopard, then it's probably something you should do. But again, your computing needs are different than everyone elses, so only you can make the decision

  • Downloads Folder No Longer Jumps Up When Saving Attachments

When saving attachments in Mail, my downloads folder on the Doc used to jump up a couple of times when I hit "save" from within an email that I received to signify that I just saved it into that folder.
However, for no rhyme or reason, the downloads folder no longer jumps up when I save attachments. The attachment still save in to that folder but I miss the pop-up action telling me that it did.
I searched the net and posts and found nothing on this quark. This is driving me nutz!
    Please help!

Check in System Preferences>Dock and check off Animate opening applications and see if that doesn't do it. Not sure if that is why but it is worth a shot.

  • Podcast Jumping - but only on iPhones/iPods

Ok, so I have an odd problem with my podcast. (One I produce, not one I listen to.)
My podcast will literally stop in the middle, and jump to another episode. If you go back, it will resume the show, but then it will jump again just a few minutes later. This has not been a problem for those listening on Stitcher, and it is not a problem for those listening directly from iTunes or from Podbean on their computers - it only seems to be happening on mobiles via downloads through iTunes and then loaded onto the phone.
My listeners, luckily, perservere and continue listening anyway (at least the ones that have told me about it), but I am afraid I am losing listeners, or will lose listeners, because of this problem.
Does anyone have any idea what might be going on?
I had ONE episode that worked without flaws for everyone, and on that episode I did the following - I edit in Audacity:
    1. Record in Skype with Pamela as a .mp3
    2. Truncate silence
    3. Equalize
    4. Compressor
    5. Add intro and outtro
    6. Export as mp3
I read, during the week, that one shouldn't ever really edit an mp3, and that one should instead record as a .wav, and then convert to .mp3, so that was the one difference I made on this last episode:
    1. Record in Skype with Pamela as .wav
    2. Truncate silence
    3. Equalize
    4. Compressor
    5. Add intro and outtro
    6. Export as mp3
I would think that recording it in a wav and then changing it to mp3 was the problem, except all of the previous episodes that had problems were not recorded that way. I had thought, before the episode that worked, that I was over-editing. I was doing MUCH more than those six steps in an attempt to make it sound good before then. When episode 10 worked without flaws, I was ecstatic! And I am now frustrated again with the problems with Episode 11 - a repeat despite not over-editing.
(Details were added for those who might need to know what I'm doing in order to see what's going wrong.)
Any help I can receive would be greatly appreciated. I'm fairly new to podcasting, and I am still working out the kinks. :-( I want it to be a flawless thing for my listeners, but when they listen on their iPhones or iPods via their downloads from the iTunes store, it has only lead to frustration.
    Thank you in advance,
    Sarah

Your Store page is at http://itunes.apple.com/gb/podcast/oh-my-goodness-not-another/id511797943
    Your feed is at http://omgnap.podbean.com/feed/
The media file for episode 11 is at http://omgnap.podbean.com/mf/feed/qtppf8/OMGNAPEpisode11.mp3
Two possible issues occur to me. Firstly, since the iPhone requires the server hosting the media file to handle 'byte-range requests' (i.e. requesting only part of a file at a time, not the whole thing) this could be an issue. Many servers don't handle this and it's been causing complaints from iPhone users to the point where Apple have now made it a requirement for new podcasts. Yours has I think been running for long enough not to have fallen over that, but it would be worth asking Podbean whether they can handle this. If they can't, that could be your problem.
The other problem may be server delivery speed. I was able to play the podcast directly from the Store - I spot checked it without problems; but when subscribing one has to download the entire file. I was told by iTunes this would take around 20 minutes. Trying to download directly in Safari produced a similar download speed - in fact a download time of 35 minutes. (I've not downloaded the entire episode.)
The file is 110MB; my internet connection is theoretically capable of downloading it in 15 seconds (not that I would expect to reach that) but 20 to 35 minutes is really very slow. It's faster than real time, so in theory there shouldn't be a problem about running out of buffer space, but even so it's not going to help.
I don't think the different editing methods you've used are anything to do with it. The reason for not editing an MP3 is audio quality degradation through re-compressing, not anything to do with the integrity of the file.
Your first step is to chase up the byte-range request matter with Podbean.

  • Please Help, Issues when batch processing Multi Frame images in Fireworks

I hope someone will know how to do this and tell me where I am going wrong.
    Objective 1
I have a large number of images that all have the exact same number of frames (4) and are all exactly the same size that I want to get resized, cropped and water marked (when I say 'watermarked I mean have my websites logo pasted in a specificlocation on each frame, I have my websites logo as a seperate .png file which I copy from).
    Current Process
I create a command which will crop the image then paste my companys url/log onto the first frame, move it to the correct location on the frame then copy it again and then paste it onto each of the other frames, the command then resizes the image tot he exact proportions I want.
I start a batch process and use my command, making sure that I also export from the .png to animated gif (and I edit the settings to make it 256 animated gif).
    Error 1
The process described above resizes and crops my images however it does NOT put the watermark in the correct place, it seems to put it int he right place on the first frame and then in a different place on all the followingn frames thus giving the effect of the watermark jumping around. Which is obviously NOT what I want.
    Question 1
Please let me know what process I should be following to correct the Error 1 above.
    Objective & Question 2
I want to do exactly the same thing as shown above but this time the files have a varying number of frames (from 2 to 45 frames (or instances as CS4 seems to call them)). Is there a way to paste my logo to the to the exact same location on ALL frames?
    Other information
I have tried WHXY Paste extension and I can not see how to use that to solve the issue. I have also tried 'Paste in Place' however I can not see how to use the Paste In Place extension as it is not appering in my list of commands.
Many thanks in advance for your help.
    Andy

Andy, you could start a batch process which will do most of the things you are asking for. THe batch process can be done using Fireworks. The right way to start is going to Archivo / Procesar por Lotes and then follow all the different option this tool has to offer.  Yes, I know I gave you the names in Spanish but that is the way I use Adobe Fireworks.
I hope this was usefull for you!

  • Stop the Internal Error Message in Fireworks CS4 or CS3

About 8 hours ago I ran into what is apparently a fairly
common problem for many people using Fireworks - the error message
that wouldn't allow me to save anything. Luckily, I paid attention
in class long enough to at least know to save my work often, so I
didn't lose much - just a basic wireframe that I threw together in
15 minutes or so. Thankfully, I tried saving when I did or this
would probably be a very tearful night for me. Instead, it's just a
long night. I can deal with that.
But, before I pat my iMac on the top of it's screen and say
"goodnight" I wanted to share with you the secret to "fixing" the
error message. Hopefully this will help those poor souls in the
future who need a little guidance from someone who's been there,
done that, and is too tired to design the t-shirt. This method will
    also work on Windows machines.
I'm not saying this is guaranteed to work for you, but I'm
telling you it's worth a shot. It only requires a little of your
time to do and will hopefully be the fix you need. If it's not,
please accept my sincerest understanding of your frustration and
try another method. This fix suggests that you have added, removed,
or relocated fonts on your computer since the last time Fireworks
worked properly, however, even if you haven't done any of those
things I'd still recommend giving this a try. Here's what you do:
    1. Open your favorite font manager software. I prefer the
pre-installed Font Book on the Mac, but you can use any font
manager that you want. Some good commercial font management
programs for Mac include, MasterJuggler, Suitcase Fusion, FontAgent
Pro, and Font Explorer X. For Windows you might want to try, Font
Fitting Room, X-Fonter, Suitcase for Windows, OT1 Font Manager by J
M Berthier, MainType, FontExplorer for Windows, Printer’s
Apprentice, FontAgent Pro for Windows, Typograf, or FontExpert.
Those are in no particular order, just in case you were wondering.
    2. select all of your installed fonts - including your system
fonts. Run your "validate font" command for the font management
program you're using. Sit back and let it work. I had more than
6,000 fonts on my Mac, so it took a few minutes to run through all
    of them.
    3. Your font management program should let you know which, if
any, of your fonts are corrupt, duplicates, or otherwise
dead-weight. Chances are there will be a few if you're getting the
internal error message at start-up or save with Fireworks. You need
to delete or at least remove these fonts from the fonts folder. I
had, and I'm ashamed of this, 256 duplicates and 135 dead fonts on
my poor computer. But, in my own defense, I did just reinstall many
of the fonts a few days ago and was planning to gradually work
through them to pull out the dead/unwanted ones. I should have done
that before putting them to disc last time, but no... I wasn't
    thinking.
    4. once you have the fonts removed/deleted that produced
errors or warnings during the scan with your font management
program you might want to run the scan one more time just to be
sure you got everything out. If everything looks good, you can now
    quit/exit the font manager.
    5. here's where things will seriously divide for Windows
users and Mac users. Therefore, I'm not going to fully explain
where you need to go or how to get there for this step, but I will
provide the basics. On your computer, you need to find the folders
for fireworks that contain your preferences for the program (hint,
look in the user's appdata folders, which is hidden, for Windows or
the user's Library for Mac). Inside the preferences folder you'll
find a file that houses a list of fonts, probably called fontlist
or something very similar. Delete it. You might also wish to delete
the cache for the program preferences. Those need to be regenerated
in order for this to work.
    6. Find your computer's font cache while you're looking
through the massive amounts of folders and delete the file there
too for a little added security that this will work.
    7. restart your computer.
    8. open Fireworks and create a new file. Save that file to
your computer in whatever format you want.
If the program opened, the file saved, and you didn't receive
that same old error message, congratulations, it worked! You may
have to re-establish your preference settings, but you shouldn't
    have any other problems.
That is the best I can do this evening... or morning I
suppose it would be. Best of luck to you!

  • Open letter to adobe: What future for Fireworks?

Open letter to adobe: What future for Fireworks?
Hello, My name is Fred and I'm a Fireworks user since ever.
I prefer to warn you about my complete addiction to this software.
There's many discussions on this forum and others, on how you deal with Fireworks "improvements". Some say that you are in the process of discontinuing this program, others of a possible resale ... I even read some arguments about switching to Creative Commons license.
All this is the literal translation of a sincere concern!
Can you give us some answers on the future of Fireworks?
I think our community is quite alive and active, so I hope that you'll respond in a clear, fast answer.
    Thank you in advance.
If I made huge mistakes of spelling and grammar, I apologize.
    English is not my language.

From the looks of it, the writing is already on the wall.  I own a Creative Cloud subscription and one of the main benefits touted for the Creative Cloud is regular updates and bug fixes.  And every other app like Dreamweaver, Photoshop, Illustrator, Indesign, Bridge, Lightroom, the Edge Tools, etc.  have seen multiple nice updates as part of the Creative Cloud subscription which has made me a big fan of Creative Cloud.
    All except for Fireworks.
Not a single update or bug fix has occured for Fireworks in Creative Cloud.  Even for the simplest of things.  I have reported typos in Fireworks that still have not been fixed.  In fact, I think the only app in Creative Cloud that has not been updated is Fireworks.
So like I said, it seems the writing is on the wall.  It's a shame too because even with its lack of care, it works phenomenally well for designing user interfaces.  But now others are starting to catch up and people seem to be switching to alternatives because Fireworks appears to be a dead end.
Without Fireworks, Adobe doesn't have a single UI design app in their portfolio and in particular it seems lots of UI designers are jumping ship now from Adobe to Bohemian Coding and their Sketch app. I'm dumbfounded that Adobe has allowed this to happen.
From what I understand, the Sketch app is created by just two people which makes the inability to keep Fireworks updated all the more baffling.

  • Fireworks CS5 crashes often due to buggy memory handling. Will there be a patch?

Fireworks CS5 has a major bug that causes a memory leak or memory "cap" where the application stops functioning once it has used approximately 1.5 GB of memory or so. (I read that 2GB was the cap, but I have never seen Fireworks make it to 2GB).  I only have 10 undos set in Fireworks, so I know that's not the problem. I have searched high and low to resolve this, but it seems like Adobe just hasn't recognized this as a high priority.
I read other discussions about the same problem and I now believe that Adobe either doesn't read the forums or they don't care. I hope this is not the case because I truly love the product. But, for the record, I shouldn't have to:
    - "Limit the number of undos to less than 100" (I have limited mine to 10, but after 6 months of trial and error I have found that to be irrelevant. The errors occur anyway). Don't encumber your users with such an archaic request. This is like a software bug from 1985.
    - "Save, shut down, and restart Fireworks every hour or so". Are you kidding? I can't believe someone on the forums even suggested this. This isn't a solution to the Fireworks bug. This is a work around that does nothing to prevent the error from occuring. Sometimes the error occurs on the very first click after opening a file in Fireworks, after a full system restart. A 5MB file takes 3 minutes to open in Fireworks on my quad-core 3Ghz machine with 8GB of memory. I don't mind that, but I shouldn't have to do it every 30 to 60 minutes. Users shouldn't have to look for "workarounds" to keep a software application running without crashing, especially such an expensive application. I think Fireworks is worth every penny, but only if it runs without crashing.
Perhaps most importantly, I cannot - ever - open two 5MB files in Fireworks at one time. Which makes it extremely cumbersome to impossible to copy/paste content between two files. In fact, I am designing a web application in Fireworks, and I've had to split the app into approximately 15 different files because Fireworks can't handle files bigger than 6 or 7MB.
I had the same problem with CS4 on a different machine, so I know it's not a new issue.  I have Fireworks installed on two PCs, both have quad core 3Ghz processors, one PC has 6GB of RAM, the other has 8GB. Once an hour I have to shut down what I'm working on and wait several minutes for Fireworks to reopen the file.  Sometimes Fireworks just stops responding and won't let me save my work at all. And since there is no autosave in Fireworks, I probably lose work at least once a day.
Please, please, please address this... I love Fireworks, and I'd really like to keep using it.

I am using Fireworks CS5 in Windows 7 to sketch a large site, and it was taking an extremely long time to do anything and seemed to crash on me once or twice every hour. I saved every couple of minutes and could at least rely on my last save being able to be reloaded. However, a few days ago, I lost a lot of work when Fireworks crashed halfway through the save and destroyed the file. At the time, my most recent backup copy that I had on another drive was a day old, so that crash was not only frustrating but hazardous to my project deadlines (needless to say, I've since implemented a more aggressive backup policy). Anyway, I searched for answers and forums about the problem, and I'm disappointed that it seems that it's a common problem for a lot of folks that has been around for a very long time throughout multiple releases of the software. Memory and resources also seem to be a common factor in contributing to the crashes and are also a theme in the few solution responses that I was able to find. I hope that Adobe will respond with a once-and-for-all fix / a much more efficient and stable way for Fireworks to do its magic. I typically have had very positive things to say about Adobe software and was even the one who recommended the suite for my work, but especially as "well seasoned" and *expensive* as the software is, there is no excuse for any major, well-tested component of it by now to be crashing so consistenly and causing so many problems for so many people.
The solution to the crashing that seems to work for me so far - and I hope that it works for you as well: I doubled the size of my swap/paging file to ~4GB and set the maximum to double that (~8GB). Since I did that, Fireworks has only crashed once (only once.. as if that is even acceptable considering the short time since then). It still runs fairly slowly (granted, I'm working on a large project, so I can tolerate that more), but at least I can use it again.
    Hope that helps! Best,

  • Upgrade from CS5.0 to CS5.5 Worth It?

If I could get the Warp Stablizer to work on some of my more difficult shots, I'd probably pay the $179 for an After Effects upgrade.   That's the cost of a good plugin.
But Premiere?  I don't really see any of the "What's new?" features that make me go crazy... In fact, I don't really care about them at all.
BUT, I do care about speed and stability.  I'd spend money if it made my work significantly faster.
Does CS5.5 cut down on response time?   Right now in CS5 everything is great until my project gets big, then it starts becoming a lot slower to jump from Windows/Anything back to Premiere.  It lags 5-10 seconds before the program is available.  And of course with a lot of dynamic linking, going to AE for a minor tweat and coming back to see it in Premiere can become tedius if it takes 10 seconds every time.
I also have slow response time from the time I press play to the time the video plays.  Not at first, but after the project has grown.
Does CS5.5 adress any of this at all?

Well, it depends what you consider "significantly faster." In general, CS5.5 is more responsive than CS5; projects load and save faster, GPU acceleration has been refined a bit, and shuttling through a busy timeline is--with most media--very fluid. I've had some issues with H.264 stuff, though; I'm convinced (or, at least, I've convinced myself) that CS5.5 hiccups a bit more with such footage than CS5 did. My projects use a lot of such media, now--primarily AF100 AVCHD and Canon DSLR. This could totally be placebo effect, though--I haven't done any real scientific measurements. It's not enough for me to decry CS5.5 as "bad" in this respect, because it's not.
There are a few operational enhancements, as you're aware, but if you don't need them or can live without them, they're nothing to go crazy about. I've only tinkered with Merge Clips to see what it does, and the Audition integration is interesting but not something I'm too likely to use for my kind of work.
I'd really suggest downloading the trial and giving it a go; while you won't be able to do anything with your projects that have DL'ed comps (PPro CS5.5 won't talk to AE CS5), you could import one of your other projects and beat on it for a bit. It'll will ask you to convert the project, so it'll leave the original alone. I think the only true way to ascertain whether it's a worthwhile upgrade for you is to kick the tires yourself.
I might not be the best judge of this, since I usually will upgrade within a few weeks of release just because I like to stay current, but I think that on the whole, CS5.5 is worth it, even if it's not bringing a whole lot of whiz-bang to the table.
That's my two cents, but what with the exchange rate these days, that's not much

  • WDS create vs join net, and WDS relays

    1) To configure a WDS remote or relay the docs say you must check create network and (usually anyway) give the same network name that the main base unit is creating. This seems rather odd to me for WDS, so I just wanted to make sure this is correct.
