Is it worth it to get a macbook pro or macbook + ipad 2

i am in high school and going into 10th grade next year. I have done quite a bit of research and think i have narrowed down my options based on my needs and how much money i have. I am in need of a new computer since my laptop will not make it much longer and i cannot get it repaired (also I want to get a mac because i like them a lot better than any other computer). I need the portability of a laptop, so an iMac is out of the question. My sister recently got a macbook pro for college and seeing the price tag that had for the 13 inch, pricier model, i know i cannot afford an iPad 2 and MBP.
I then have two options:
1) Buy the same MBP that my sister got: $1499 13 inch MBP (with a printer included with whatever i get, if it helps, probably not though)
2) Buy a 16GB iPad 2 wifi and a MacBook for around $999
I like option 2 better because when i go out of town for soccer tournaments i usually bring my laptop with me but i do not like to carry it around the hotel, so an ipad would be great. also it would be ideal for long carrides (which i take often). battery life is also better on the ipad. Whatever i get will mostly likely be my computer in college (hoping nothing bad happens and i dont need to replace it before then). I will not be doing anything heavy so that is where the MacBook is fine. If i go with the MBP, then i will just have to use that and hope for as much portability as possible, although it should not be terribly bad.
The overall things i REALLY need is:
1. Portability
2. Something to do essays, presentations, etc on.
3. Reliability (i guess i mean battery life)
4. Something to take notes on (more or less in college but very possibly in high school as well
5. something that will be easy to do research with when on the go
I think if i were to choose i would go with option 2 but please tell me what you think as i do not know much about how well macs are with portability compared to ipads.
Thanks (and sorry the question is so long)

thank you a lot. one more question i had, would the ipad and macbook work well together if i am just using it for writing essays, making presentations, web, maybe movie editing (with imovie for right now) and other simple things? depending on what i end up doing in college, i guess this would also really make a difference. although as of right now, i feel i will either be majoring in a topic with sports science or something like that (i forget exactly what the major was but i hope to maybe be a physical therapist or something like that) or if i really change my mind i would go for being a video editor (which is where maybe an iMac would come in handy for college and FCP) but as of right now, nothing of that sort. Just basic use. I would love to have the MBP and iPad but that is a far fetched idea. i cannot wait for the iOS5 update. But i guess if i got the iPad and Macbook (which my uncle may be able to help with the iPad and i would have to come up with the money for the macbook or vise-versa) then i would have the iPad before the macbook. Which is fine because my laptop still works enough for me to sync to itunes. but i would maybe bring the mac to school and use the ipad for travel and other things, maybe even to replace my ipod since it is older and has almost no storage left on it. I guess the real problem thats holding me back from the MBP is that i dont have a little more than 1000 to spend all at once and i still want the portability of the ipad. But there really is no substitute for a laptop.

How do I get apps from my MacBook pro to my ipad

If they apps were bought on iTunes on your Mac then you can connect the iPad to your Mac, select the iPad on the left-hand side of iTunes, and use the Apps tab on the right-hand side of iTunes to sync them to the iPad - or you can re-download them directly on the iPad via the App Store app.
If you bought the apps in the Mac App Store then you can't sync them to the iPad as Mac apps are not compatible with the iPad

  • Does it worth to move from macbook pro to macbook pro retina?

    Hey
    I have macbook pro with
Processor  2.66 GHz Intel Core i7
    Memory  8 GB 1067 MHz DDR3
Graphics  NVIDIA GeForce GT 330M 512 MB
and its good but many people are saying macbook pro 2013 with retina display is the best laptop and has many features so do you advice me to move from macbook pro to macbook pro 2013 with retina display?
    thanka

It's a very sweet machine, of course. Although the upgrade path is a bit dicey. Just my opinion, but unless you have very demanding graphics needs (in which case you probably should have a desktop system with a huge monitor), I don't see the point of spending all the money. Probably you would get more value if you take your current machine and max out the RAM and get an SSD.
It's hard to advise anyone in such matters via the internet.

If your budget is unlimited, look at both the retina and non-retina and make a decision based on your preferences.  If funds are tight, explore the options in the refurbished section.  Unless you are dealing with courses that demand specific performance parameters, any one of these options will suffice.

  • I have a MacBook pro and an IPAD.  My MacBook gets wi fi but my IPAD does not ... and yet both have been connecting to the Internet for four years. Why isn't my IPAD connecting now?

I have a macbook pro and an ipad ... both have which regularly connected to the web through my airport for two years ... now, my ipad won't connect ... and the genius bar says my ipad is ok. Does anyone have any suggestions as to the cause and the cure?

Can your iPad connect to other Wi-Fi networks? If so, is it possible that you may have configured your AirPort to restrict access to the iPad by including the iPad's MAC address in the AirPort's Timed Access Control settings?

If you are on iTunes 11 on your Mac then you may want to re-enable the left-hand sidebar via View > Show Sidebar, which might make it easier to navigate and may instructions may make more sense.
To sync photos, connect and select your iPad on the left-hand side of your computer's iTunes (if you've enabled the sidebar), and on the right-hand side there should be a series of tabs, one of which should be Photos - if you select that tab you can then select which photo folders to sync to the iPad. There is a bit more info on this page. You will need to sync all the photos that you want on the iPad together in one go as only the most recent photo sync remains on the iPad - synced photos can't be deleted directly on the iPad, instead they are deleted by not including them in the next photo sync.
If you haven't enabled the sidebar, then from your library click 'iPad' at the top right of the screen and you should get a series of buttons along the top of the screen, including one for Photos

    Hi Zerr222,
Try unplugging the router from the power for 30 seconds, plug it back in and allow it 2 minuts to fully start.
Next turn the printer off and back on and check for any difference.
If the issue remain, may you changed a wireless router lately? what is your exact router brand and model?

  • How can I transfer Microsoft office from my old macbook pro to macbook air

how can I transfer microsoft office from macbook pro to macbook air?

Assuming you have the 2011 version the easiest way is go to Microsoft's Web site and download Mac Office 2011 onto your MacBook Air and then run it. If you have the 2008 (or the 2011) version on disc you can turn on DVD sharing in the Sharing control panel of your MBP and install it by remotely sharing your MBP's DVD.
Since Microsoft uses activation when you start Office on the new computer if you use the same activation code as you used on the MBP you'll probably get a message to call Microsoft. Do so and just explain that you got a new computer.

  • Macbook pro to your ipad?

How do you look at and edit documents in word/excel etc created on your macbook pro on your ipad?

You can copy word and excel documents to the iPad, but first you need one or more apps on the iPad that support those document types - unlike a 'normal' computer the iPad doesn't have a file system, and everything on it has to be associated with an app.
The options include Apple's Pages app for Word documents and Numbers for Excel spreadsheets. And from third-parties apps such as Documents To Go (and 'premium' version) and QuickOffice Pro HD.
As to how you then get the document to your chosen app will depend upon what the app supports - different apps will have different ways of copying their content to/from a computer e.g. via the file sharing section at the bottom of the device's apps tab when connected to iTunes, via wifi, email, dropbox etc. Some apps also support iCloud storage e.g. Pages and iCloud.

  • MacBook Pro or MacBook Air for college

    Hi guys!
So this is the typical college question from a mac lover, do I get the air or the pro?  Currently my major is undeclared, but I'm looking into engineering.  At the moment I don't do a lot of work with video and photography, but I am hoping to get more into that stuff although it wouldn't be like getting a major or a minor in it.  More like just fiddling around.  I usually watch a lot of DVDs and I have a fairly large music library.  I'm hoping to just use netflix and get rid of some old music next year but chances are that won't happen.
Currently I have just the regular old MacBook circa 2010.  I like it, although it is soooooo slow now like it literally takes 10 minutes to open up safari for the first time after shutting it down, not the mention the screen has started to go awry (which is all my fault, don't step on your macs because it does not end well).  I justt need an upgrade for next year.
I like that the air is light and has a super good battery, however I don't know if I like how slow it is.  I like the pro because its faster, comes in a 15" and is just all around more powerful, however I don't like the battery life quite so much and I don't know if the size would be the much of a big deal.  If anyone wants to suggest the 11" air, I'm just bonn stop you right here because that is not happening.
I'm kinda leaning toward the air, but every time I go to purchase it something inside me asks if that what I really want.
Alright so what are everybody's thought! Thank you!

I recommend you a Macbook Pro (preferably maxed out in the specs). I'm studying Mechanical Engineering and so far it has worked marvels for me. The Macbook pro is a little heavier than the MBA, however i feel that what you should really look for is performance and not merely things like weight (specially if its so little difference). As for the battery, I don't know in your college, but in my we have ALL around the campus TONS of power outlets, so that shouldn't matter. So yeah.. between MacBook Pro and MacBook aire definitively Macbook Pro

  • MacBook Pro vs MacBook Air for online college?

I'm starting grad school in another month or so (MA in Education and a k-8 teaching credential). The entire program will be ONLINE with WGU (Western Governors University). I'd love to buy and use just a MacBook Air, but I wonder whether it will be sufficient for an online program? My other option is a MacBook Pro.
    Any thoughts?

    define sufficient
If you plan on much/ larger video editing then get the Pro.
I own both, and love both,... prefer the Air a bit more for portability, however that is purely subjective.
The NEW macbook Pro and Air are extremely close in form factor
The newest macbook Pro is essentially a larger macbook Air with Retina display and options for speed in increasing prices up to an independent graphics and quad core processor.
both Air and new Pro now have PCIe SSD and permanent RAM.
The Air is the lightweight portable form factor, fast to boot and shut down, but with longer battery life than any of the macbook pro in 13"
Now the new macbook Pro and macbook Air are extremely close in form factor and nature.
    both have 802ac wifi
both have permanent RAM, no superdrive
both are slim profiles and SSD
The only real differences now are (in the most expensive Pros) faster processors and quadcore processors and top end model autonomous graphics, also HDMI output on the new macbook Pros!. ....and of course the retina display
both are now "very good for travel"
DETAILED bench tests between the new AIR and the new PRO here:
    http://arstechnica.com/gadgets/2013/11/how-to-choose-13-inch-macbook-air-vs-13-i nch-retina-macbook-pro/2/
Other than features the form factor of the Air and Pro are VERY close now,....so now its merely a matter of features and price more than anything.
You need an external HD regardless of what you get for backups etc.   Drop into an Apple store and handle both and make your choice based on features, such as Retina or non-retina, .... both at a distance now look like the same computer.
The Pro weighs more, ....but nowhere near what it used to just a month ago on the older macbook Pros
The NEW macbook Pro is a different creature entirely than the older macbook Pro, .....the new Pro is thicker than the Air, but id frankly call the NEWEST Pro a "macbook Air with Retina display" , or
Maybe a “macbook Air PRO with Retina display”
Instead of Air vs. Pro now,.....its really a smooth transition from Air to pro without comparing say, 2 different creatures, now its like contrasting a horse from a race horse (rough analogy)
Either one in 8gig of RAM (preferably)... the 4gig upgrade costs very little,  the I7 you will notice only 15% faster on heavy applications over the I5, and NOTHING on most APPS.....I5 has longer battery life.
As you see below, the non-Retina 13" AIR is 82% of the Macbook with Retina display in resolution
there is no magical number of pixels per inch that automatically equates to Retina quality.
    http://www.cultofmac.com/168509/why-you-might-be-disappointed-by-the-resolution- of-those-new-retina-display-macs-feature/
A huge internal SSD isnt a game changer for anything, you need an external HD anyway
what you WONT READ on Apple.com etc. is that the larger SSD  are much faster due to SSD density
"The 512GB Samsung SSD found in our 13-inch model offers roughly a 400MB/s increase in write speeds over the 128GB SanDisk/Marvell SSD"

  • IPad mini vs iPad and MacBook Pro vs MacBook Air

I want to buy an iPad. I am trying to decide which is best to purchase to satisfy my expectations and what I would use the product for- the current 4th gen iPad or the new iPad mini. I do like the fact that the iPad mini fits so nicely in your hands but I also really like the fact that the 4th gen iPad has such an a advanced A6X chip giving it awesome graphics and its big beautiful 9.7 inch screen.
I like to take photos and play games and search the Internet. I bring my current iPod touch 4th gen many places with me. I like to FaceTime and email and text my friends with iMessage. I also like to watch movies and tv shows and listen to music and watch music video. However I do not like to read books.
What can't you do with and iPad mini that you can't do with an iPad and what is the difference (besides the sizes). What would you do with an iPad mini you wouldn't do with an iPad or what would you do with an iPad you wouldn't do with an iPad mini?
          ALSO
What is the difference between the MacBook Pro and the MacBook Air and what are they best used for and which would best satisfy my hobbies while using apple products (listed above). Which is best to get MacBook Pro of MacBook Air and what would you do with one and not the other.
