Is it worth paying for Microsoft office for Mac for college, or is buying iwork a better deal?

I'll be going off to college in a year or so, and im wondering if it is worth the 120 dollars for microsoft office, or is it better just to get iwork for mac right away?

Wait until you are enrolled after which you may get it free or at low cost from your school.
Don't bother with iWork. Schools are pretty standardized on Office. You could also download one the Office-like suites:
LibreOffice
Open Office
Neo Office
Look for them at MacUpdate or CNET Downloads

  • If I buy iWork on my iPhone, will I be able to install that same iWork through my apple account onto an iPad and be able to use that full screen? Or do i have to pay for a iPad version of iWork, where the screen settings and other stuff are different?

I'd like to get iWork on both my ipad 2 and iphone 4 mainly for traveling purposes... Right now I lent my iPad to my dad whose in somewhere else now so I don't have access to the iPad. So, I was wondering if right now I buy iWork onto my iPhone, and then when the iPad comes home, can I install that same iWork I bought through my apple acout and not have to pay for another version, and the iPad iWork can go full screen beautifully and not ugly?

iWork is universal, so it will work full-res on the iPad. This is true for any app which has the plus sign symbol (in the App Store in iTunes it will say "This app is designed for iPhone and iPad".

  • Uploaded Mtn Lion, Lost Microsoft Office. Now they want me to buy it again?  Anyone else have this experience/solution?

My Microsoft Office Suite required an "upgrade" which cost exactly what the original price of the software was.  The message came to me immediately after uploading Mountain Lion.  Is this standard operating proceedure for Mountain Lion?
BTW, I am located in Mongolia and cannot access the "upgrade" required from here, so have effectively lost a sizable amount of software with Mountain Lion.

but I can tell you that it's pretty standard for Microshaft to squeeze everything they possibly can out of you.
    What?  That's crazy.
In 2005 Apple annouced they would be transitioning from IBM's PowerPC processors (G3, G4,G5) to chips manufactured by Intel for their Mac line.  This was a huge decision.  Huge, for both users and developers, but necessary to take advantage of the best and fastest processors available for both customers and developers.
Apple continued to maintain compatibility for apps written for the IBM chips for years with Rosetta and other technologies. But eventually the time came to make a clean break in order to keep the Mac platform moving forward without the excess baggage necessary for backward compatibility.
That time was with the launch of Lion OS X 10.7 last year and continuing with Mountain Lion OS X 10.8.  No secret was made of this to developers.
Versions of Office prior to Office 2008 were written for the PowerPC processor.
So, for better or worse, if you want to run the latest Mac operating system, you also have to be running the latest versions of your favorite software.
There is no conspiracy.  The writing's been on the wall for years.

  • Microsoft Office and Mac OS X 10.6 Issues

Two weeks ago I installed Snow Leopard to my Mac hoping it would be an upgrade. Everything works well other than my Microsoft Office, and as a student, this is a huge problem. I have Word 2004, and now it freezes all the time. What can I do to fix this?
    Thanks,
    Amanda

Hi, Amanda & welcome to the forums.
I'm not going to lecture you about software compatibility - I'm sure you can do the math between 2004 & 2009, but I will warn you about a common issue with fonts that old...
The general approach at this time is to ask if you've checked for any problematic fonts with Apple's Font Book (look in the Applications folder). Be sure to find and remove all duplicates also.
Start there to be sure all fonts that are in play come out with a clean bill of health.
Also, don't hesisate to perform wholesale deletion of old and/or little used fonts - be skeptical of anything that has come from any MS Equation Editor installation and good luck.
I would also suggest you take a look at iWork '09 with Pages. You can download a trial version. I think it would be a good step in concert with your new OS to get current with a new word processor as well.

  • Microsoft office in mac

Hey i have office in my mac but i've noticed that it isn't working same way that windows version.
For example i have some school work which reguires use of macros in word and exel and i can't get them working properly.
Any ideas how can i get them work?
We got a advice for windows version that we should go to Tools-Macros-Security and then chooce Medium. Only problem is that mac version isn't the same as windows.
I hope somebody understands my description on this matter

    Good Morning,
Please note that the Apple Support Forums are designed to provide support for Apple or Apple Branded products and not third party applications or hardware, for specific support regarding a third party product you may be better off contacting the manufacturer for support.
That being said, depending on the type of macro that is built into the document, you might not be able to use the macro under the Mac OS X version of Microsoft Office due to Microsoft's decision to cripple the scripting/macro support under existing versions of Microsoft Office: Mac.
This may (or may not) be corrected in the next version of the product.
You may give thought to running a Windows Virtual Machine either using the free Virtual PC tool from Microsoft (http://www.microsoft.com/mac/) or a more advanced virtual environment such as Parallels or VMWare to run the Windows version of Office on your Mac.
    Hope this helps,
    David

Seeing as how Office is a Microsoft product, doesn't seem more likely that changing the account information should be discussed with them?

  • Microsoft Office on Mac vs PC

Does anyone know what the differences are between Microsoft Office 2003 on a PC vs Microsoft Office 2004 on a Mac? I use both and I'm wondering why I have problems with the PC version when I transfer files back and forth. This is mostly with Word and I see differences in the spell check and formating.
    iMac 20 rev B, iBook 12in 1.33ghz   Mac OS X (10.4.7)

I remember that many years ago (versions 4 and 5, I believe, but probably version 6 too) some files made on a Mac would get their formatting messed up when opened on another Mac, specially if the default printers were different. Recently, a file I created on my G5 would print incorrectly on all the PCs I tried at school.
Sometimes I have problems with Visual Basic when I open Excel files on a PC.
The formatting problem you see in formatting may be a problem with the fonts being used - are you using the exact same fonts on the two OSes?

  • Microsoft Office on Mac Keeps Freezing

At first the Word document would freeze up. Then the preferred layout would change, with a pop-up prompt telling me that there is not enough memory or that I'm out of disc space, neither of which is true.
In the like manner, my account disc space got supposedly used up, though I don't have that many documents saved up on it . So I started saving documents on the desktop. Then the desktop disc space got supposedly used up through basic text documents. But I am doing basic text work, and I don't have anything major on my computer that would take up all the space.
What do I do? How do I fix the issue? Do I need to reallocate space? Does the Microsoft Office need to be reinstalled? If so, how do I do that without loosing the work that I have so far?
PLEASE HELP! Need to keep working and don't know how to resolve this issue.

You do not have a Desktop disk space and an account disk space, one being separate from the other, as in one being full and the other not.
If your hard drive has plenty of space then that is all that matters as far as disk space is concerned. Click on your hard drive icon to highlight it then go the the menu bar and under 'File' select 'Get Info'. This will bring up a window that will tell you how much disk space you have.

  • HT204406 Since updating to ios6 on my iPhone 4S iTunes Match has not worked. The app stays open for about five seconds before crashing. With ios5 it was great and worth paying for. Now it is utterly useless. Apple, please listen and fix this problem.

Ever since I updated to ios 6 on my iPhone 4S, iTunes Match has not worked.
I have been through the process of deleting my iTunes control files, and that worked temporarily, but now I cannot listen to music through the service.
It shows my artists and albums, then takes forever to access the songs (often more than 10 minutes - and yes, that's using WiFi), more often than not crashing before it gets to that point, then repeatedly crashing when I try to open the Music App, so I can't even access things I've downloaded.
Has anyone else found a solution?
Apple, please listen up - I am paying you for the iTunes Match service that is utterly useless. Fix it please.

After some troubleshooting, I decided to order a new battery.  I replaced the battery and was then able to get it to restore, however--after I restore it and it comes time to restart the phone, it gets stuck and doesn't turn on.
Sorry, your repair ruined the iPhone.
She does not have apple care and even though she loved this device, she isn't going to buy another iPhone because of all the problems shes had with this one (it's just over a year old).
After you ruined the iPhone with DIY, Apple won't touch it anymore. You should have asked before all these had happened.
I'm an android user myself and I love rooting/flashing new ROMS, so if jailbreaking her phone or doing some kind of super-restore with 3rd party programs might help, I'm all for it-
Yeah, all Android user can think of is Jailbreaking, read this: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3743

  • Is the Macbook Air 2013 worth getting for college?

I am going to college and i need a notebook that is durable but also has a good amount of storage for word processing and projects.

Can you really tell the difference with the i7 and the i5?
Only by comparing the two side-by-side. You are not likely to notice any difference otherwise.
The reason for recommending those upgrades is that neither one can be changed later. I'd say 4 GB is sufficient but merely so. More RAM makes a Mac more likely to be compatible with future OS upgrades. 4 GB will certainly be enough for the time being though.
The MBA's flash memory tends to mask the effects of too little RAM, meaning a 4 GB Mac with a spinning hard disk may appear to bog down under high memory demands, whereas a 4 GB MBA will not.
