Is it worth replacing the MacBook Pro with an iPad Air?

I've been sat in the realms of contemplation for some time now. Since the release of the iPad Air it looks as though it is now possibly a viable option for me to replace my aging MacBook Pro. I essentially only use my laptop for photographs and music. My photo collection is about 11GB in size when they are in their original format outside of iPhoto. (iPhoto bloats it up to 33GB). My music collection is miniscule and we're talking only about 2GB in size, as it's only stuff I have purchased from the iTunes Store, so I know I can listen to this whenever I want to by re-downloading specific albums or tracks with "Purchases in the Cloud." At the moment I think the Macbook Pro is more than I actually need for what I use it for. Things like document creation etc. isn't an issue for me as I've used pages previously on my laptop and my documents are iCloud synced.
For me, I'd be looking at 64GB or 128GB capacity, as I use a Sony NEX-6 DSLR so the files as JPEG are large. I'm not one to keep every single photo I have taken, I'm kind of "minimalist" so out of say 400 photos I'd only keep 100 of the best ones.
I have read that some people have used services such as Dropbox for additional cloud storage, but I'm looking at using a networked hard drive that supports iOS so I can back up my photos to a physical drive at home should anything detrimental happen to the iPad (if I did get one).
I'm curious to hear if anyone has gone down the route of replacing their laptop or even desktop with a high-capacity iPad, and hear how they've got on with it. This is becoming a more frequently asked question after researching the vast spaces of the Internet, but there are no answers specific for my needs!

An iPad is a great device, but it's no computer replacement. It lacks the file sharing/structure that comptuers have and the ability to easily get files onto/off it without the internet.
That said, if you still have your desktop and use it for most of the computing work and basically just want a photo viewer, check your e-mail device, then it may work for you.
The networked harddrive will be the hard part. Since the iPad lacks a file manager anything you use on it must have an app so that you can access it. And that app also must be allowed to 'send' your files to another app. So that may be what you really need to research. The ability and ease of using a network drive to do the file sharing you want.

  • Is it worth buying the macbook pro with 256GB compared to that with only 128GB?

I will mainly be using the laptop for university style dissertations/powerpoints. I'm also a big music and photo lover but I hardly ever download videos. What are everyone's views?
    Kind regards,
    Charlotte

It is a function of the types of data and how much is generated.  If all one would ever have is text on the MBP, certainly 128 GB of storage may be enough.  If one starts adding pictures, music, video, game applications etc., the equation can change radically.  I venture to say that almost all university students use their computers for personal as well as school activities.
If the bank account is tight and additional storage cannot be added, in all probability great discipline will have to be exercised as to what will be kept on the MBP.  If you order a MBP with minimal storage and find you need more, all is not lost because you can purchase, at a reasonable price, an external HDD to take up the slack.   The disadvantage is that you then have another physical item to deal with but a degree of convenience and efficiency is lost.
    Ciao.

  • What is Apple's official plan for future battery replacement in the Macbook Pro with Retina Display?

What is Apple's official plan for future battery replacement in the Macbook Pro with Retina display?

No one here works for Apple nor does Apple visit this message board.  We are all end users like yourself helping each other out.
"Official" Apple "replacement" announcements will be listed on their website and possibly on their Knowledge Base website.
Check the All Programs website too.

  • How does Autodesk Maya run on the MacBook Pro with Retina Display?

    Hello there,
I'm interested in using the MacBook Pro with Retina Display for Autdesk Maya and wanted find out what people's experiences with that are. It'd be great if anyone can help share their experiences!
    Thanks!

One thing I do know, is the the UI is very small and menu items/buttons are hard to see. Someone posted a video of a now removed autodesk forum response on how to adjust font sizes .cfg file style, but I tried and it did nothing to the small text in Maya 2014. If you plan on it and don't have button and menu locations memorized by feel, I wouldn't use this software on a macbook pro without an external display, or change the resolution out of retina to use Maya.

  • Using the MacBook Pro with external Monitor and Keyboard

This may be a dumb question, but here it goes anyway:
Can I use the MacBook Pro with an external monitor and a bluetooth keyboard and mouse without having it opened all of the time ?
I am planning to buy a MacBook for my wife and most of the time she will be using it at her home office.
I don't want her to use the computer opened all of the time when she is actually looking at the separate screen and using a separate keyboard. Having the laptop opened will only accumulate dust and reduce the lifetime of the built in screen.
What I would actually need is a kind of "docking station", but Apple doesn't make that - I know.
So can the MacBook at least be operated without the internal screen powered on while it is closed?
    Thanks for your help
    Martin

I want to know if the Macbook Pro with the ash key board and as the cd rom infront is more recent than the one with the black key board and as the cd rom on the side.

    Hi Tracy,
I'm guessing "ash" is the silver colored keyboard, the same color as the rest of the MBP? If so, that machine, with the optical drive slot on the front, is the older machine.

  • Is the Macbook Pro with retina display compatible with the share disk utility?

    Hi,
I was wondering whether, since the macbook pro with retina display has no cd rom drive, whether the MBP is compatible with the share disk utility like the mackbook air
    VKB

there should be no reason why it wouldn't be, as that's a feature of the OS, not the hardware.

  • Does the MacBook Pro with Retina Display come with a CD slot?

Would anybody know if the MacBook Pro with Retina Display comes with a DVD slot to put a CD in?

If you read the specs on them you will discover that the MBP is way more powerful then the MBA. The big feature of the MBA is light weight. If you need a powerful computer then you want the MBP instead.

  • I've got the Macbook Pro with leopard, if i want to get Lion for it, do i have to get snow leopard first? i don't have a mac app store!

I've got the Macbook Pro with leopard, if i want to get Lion for it, do i have to get snow leopard first? i don't have a mac app store!

Ian, this might help explain it a bit more:
    http://osxdaily.com/2011/06/07/mac-os-x-10-7-lion-system-requirements/
It's only available from the store, and you need 10.6.6 to access the store. But if you can download it using 10.6.6 on another machine, you'll be able to install it on a machine meeting the hardware requirements (it doesn't matter which OS was installed on it).

  • Do the air/pro herschel cases fit the macbook pro with the cd drive?

My boyfriend owns the macbook pro with the cd drive. I am trying to purchase him a herschel case (they are sold in the accessory section in the apple store, online as well as in store)
My only concern is that I know the air and the new pro are thinner, more sleek then the macbook pro with the cd drive and I'm just curious to know if the herschel cases that say "fits air/pro 13inch" actually fit the macbook with the cd drive.
Any answers would be very much so appreciated!
    Thank you.

yes their a difference.  The retna model is slimmer and doesnt have an optical drive.

    - You can only sync with one iTune library but you can manually music music and vides with different computers. To do so go to iTunes>Help>iTunes Help>Sync your iPod....>Sync You Device>Set up Syncing>Sync your device manually and follow the instructions.
    - To get iTunes to see the iPod:
