If it were mine I would upgrade to Snow Leopard but with a clean install - full backup of whole disk to external with Carbon Copy Cloner - erase disk - don't use the installer to import anything except network settings - the more historic things you import the more likely it will be that you import something less than perfect.

  • New apple tv worth upgrade

I own the original Apple TV and am wondering if there is anything about the new one that makes it worth upgrading?

You have to look at them as different products with different purposes. If you fully used all the features of ATV1, then you would miss some things. If you only used the streaming functions of ATV1, then ATV2 is a very positive upgrade.
I have both. Had the ATV1 for a couple of years. I liked the ATV1 except for lacking Netflix and the VERY slow interface speed.
ATV2 is very quick, small, silent, and runs cool.
Having both an ATV1 and ATV2, I must admit that I am disappointed that the ATV2 cannot access the library on the ATV1, nor can the ATV1 stream to the ATV2 as an AirPlay Speaker. Seems like an oversight.
So the only way to play your iTunes library or photos over ATV2 is you MUST have a Mac/PC turned on at all times. When I pack up my Laptop and head to the office, my house, spouse and kids have no access to our family music library. Unless I hook up the ATV1 to the same main stereo system as the ATV2. Need both. ;-(

  • Is it worth upgrading to CS4?

I have used Photoshop CS2 for a few years now and want to find out from someone who has CS4 if it is worth upgrading to it from CS2.
I mainly use it for simple tasks like banners for my store.
We don't do a lot of fancy stuff as I am not really a professional.
I guess the question is: Will CS4 make life easier for a begginer or is it pretty much the same thing?
    Thanks in advance.

Considering the type and volume of work You imply to be doing You may not be able to take a lot of advantage from CS4’s improvements: Canvas-rotation, improved 3D-features, Content-Aware Scale, non modal Adjustment dialogs (actually an irritant to some – me for example), etc. and last but not least Configurator.
In my opinion Photoshop CS4 is a »better thing« than CS2, but the expense may not be justified for You yet.
Moreover it seems to be widely expected that CS5 be published in 2010, so You might want to wait for that as upgrades are – if I’m not mistaken – possible for three versions.

  • Worth upgrading Hard Drive?

    Hi All,
Would appreciate any advice you can offer.
    I have a Mid 2009 Macbook Pro.
Currently, I am running 8gbs of RAM and the standard 160gb Toshiba hard drive.
For the most part, the system runs pretty well, except when my hard drive is full. Right now, I have about 20gb of hard drive free but will begin learning the Adobe Creative Suite soon so I will need additional space.
My "Service Battery" notification is showing - though the battery lasts about 3.5 hours per charge.
I am wondering if someone could advise whether it is worth upgrading the harddrive considering the computer's age and battery state. I am looking at 750gb WD Scorpio Black for $75.
The processor is a 2.6 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
I am hoping to get another two years out of this machine
    Thank you!
    Joe

Well, from the research I've gathered, any consumer-level SSD will blow any consumer-level HDD out of the water. But for $130, I don't think you're going to find many SSD that will match your specs. A hybrid would be nice, seeing as boot times would be much faster, and you'd still get the storage. 7200 rpm HDDs aren't to hard to find. I *think* most Macs before 2012 come with a 5400 rpm drive (like mine).
Here's a quick Google Shopping Search I did for a 256gb SDD (around $130.) I also went ahead and found a hybrid drive for you: SSHD.
And no problem! Glad to help.

  • Is it worth upgrading to Tiger?

    Hi,
I have a PB 1.25 and was wondering if it's worth upgrading to tiger or not? Will it help or hurt the performance on this one? Finally, will this PB be obsolete when (and if) and intel PB comes out? Any input would be appreciated.

Whether it's "worth it" to upgrade to 10.4 has less to do with performance or stability than it has to do with features. Do you need the features of Tiger (e.g., Spotlight, Dashboard, Core Image)? As we are already on 10.4.3, it is very unlikely that you will encounter any stability or performance issues should you upgrade. As you can tell from my stats, I'm running just fine on 10.4.3 on a 1GHz G4, and in fact, I find that the performance is slightly better. Spotlight is an incredible feature and to me, could have been the sole justification for upgrading.
When the Intel-based PowerBooks come out, your machine won't be "obsolete" in the sense that it won't be usable, but it certainly will have been around the block a couple times. That's just the way computer technology is. I've heard some Mac users are so attached to their older machines that they still use them (we're talking pre PPC here). I've had mine for 2 years now, and I imagine I'll continue using it even if I get an Intel-based Powerbook. Even if it's not the fastest computer, it still works for non-critical tasks.

  • Is mountain lion worth upgrading from lion

is mountain lion worth upgrading from lion

That is a question you really have to answer...go to http://www.apple.com/osx and check the features in ML...are they features that are important to YOU?  Do you want to text message from your computer?  Use the other features that are an integral part of iOS/  For me the huge factor is the added speed of ML...Safari for me is significantly faster...the whole system is faster.  I really like ML...but there are others on here who disagree.
Go through the features and see how important they are to you then decide.

  • Is it worth upgrading iWeb?

I don't have time to learn dreamweaver... I have iWeb '08 which I have made a few sites with. I am a bit bored of it but have no option. I was recently wondering if an upgrade would spice things up? Do iWebs get better each year?

iWeb '09 is not that much more advanced than '08 and, since Apple has given up on the application, its hardly worth upgrading if you are bored with it!

  • Allmighty Supreme Mayo want to know if it is worth upgrading to 3G Ipad.

Hi my name is Allmighty Supreme and I want to know if the 3G iPad is worth upgrading to. I have the Wi Fi version and I am happy with it because I dont use it anywhere without wifi but a friend of mine recently got the 3G version and its pretty cool. Should I upgrade or wait for the next generation ipad.

I would get the 3G one if "you" think you might have use for it. The fees don't have to be every month and the months you don't need 3G you just don't pay, the months you have plans to do something or vacation, turn it on and pay. No different than the Intl plans.
I got the 3G, not that I need it every second, but it gives "the option" to be used more places. I already had a use for it the other day when I was busy doing something on it and a friend wanted me to go for a ride with her as she didn't want to go alone. I walked to her car, sat down and didn't miss a beat on what I was doing thanks to the 3G option

  • FCE worth upgrading to FCE HD

I have FCE at the moment, and am thinking of upgrading to FCE HD. Given how good imovie has got, is it worth it? Is it a big jump etc?

It depends what you want to do: I have a bicycle at the moment; is it worth upgrading to a motor-bike? (..Actually, I have a Subaru, but who cares?..)
A motorbike goes faster, but isn't as thin, for getting between cars, as a bike. I can't use it on country footpaths or along the side of the Thames on the tow-path, as I can a bike ..etc, etc.
iMovie HD handles HDV (hi-def) footage, but ordinary FCE doesn't. If you have an HDV camcorder, or want to encode photos as a hi-def movie project (as Karl suggests, I think) then you can do that with iMovie HD, and you can't do it with plain ol' FCE.
You'd be able to do it with FCE HD ..but you wouldn't get all the wonderful 3rd-party plug-ins which are available for iMovie.
The end result of editing HDV with iMovie HD and FCE HD is identical: they use the same Apple Intermediate Codec for handling hi-def material.
The difference between FCE HD and iMovie HD - as you probably know - is that you get many more simultaneous video - and audio - tracks to play with in FCE HD than in iMovie HD. But if you're never going to need them, why bother with them?
So only you can decide if it's "worth" paying to upgrade your FCE.
D'you shoot home movies? ..Probably not worth bothering.
D'you shoot weddings and barmitzvahs? ..Possibly worth it, but more probably not.
D'you shoot sports videos, and want picture-in-picture (one in slo-mo and one real speed)? ..You can do that with iMovie and a plug-in.
Is colour-correction vital ..e.g; for a company's promotional video or DVD? ..Then you probably want FCE HD (assuming you're using hi-def).
D'you want to move text along complicated motion paths, and want to cross cut between footage shot on two or more cameras? Then you probably want FCE HD (assuming you're using hi-def).
Weigh up what you want to do, and that'll describe the choice you need to make. But for holiday movies, I'd stick with iMovie HD.

  • Isit Worth Upgrading To V21. - Nokia N97

Nokia Ovi Suite says that there is a new version that improves call reliability, stability etc.
All these great things....but my phone (one of the few) seems to work perfectly well at the moment.
So isit worth upgrading, since some of these upgrades can just wreck everything anyway?
    Any thoughts here?
    Thanks....

Yes DO IT, and reset as well, once it's done, install Nokia maps 3.03 followed by memory re-organizer ! And try RamBlow for a couple of weeks, I think you'll find it works great and is worth the £8 ! It will be like having a new phone
    Good Luck

  • I have a Titanium PowerBook G4 (1GHz) running OS 10.4.11.  Is it worth upgrading to OS 10.5?

I have a Titanium PowerBook G4 (1GHz) running OS 10.4.11.  Is it worth upgrading to OS 10.5?  (I also have a newer desktop running Lion and an iPhone 4 running IOS 5).  Thanks.

I upgraded my PowerBook G4 from 10.4 to 10.5 and from 512MB to 1.25GB RAM and thought it was well worth it. It's still in perfect condition, has a SuperDrive and the battery holds a full charge.
I use the following programs every day and they encouraged me to upgrade (clean install!) Leopard 10.5, it's worth the $130 to me:
iPhone requires 10.5, as previous poster stated above- the most important reason that I went to 10.5
Twitterrific 3.24 will run on 10.5 and is the oldest functioning Twitterrific client for 10.5 that will work due to the OAuth requirements, however it will not run at all on 10.4 so 10.4 can no longer use any version of Twitterrific (logging in with older version will fail due to the OAuth requirements which were not present in the older 10.4 versions)
Current version of VLC 1.1.xx is not supported under 10.4
Current 10.x version of iTunes is not supported under 10.4
Safari 5 requires 10.5, will not run at all on 10.4
Echofon requires 10.5, no version of Echofon will run at all on 10.4
Google Earth will not run at all on 10.4

  • I have an iPad 2 and is it worth upgrading from iOS 5.1 to 6.0 and should I wait for further stable updates ?

I have an iPad 2 and is it worth upgrading from iOS 5.1 to 6.0 And should I wait for further stable updates?  As I have there are app compatibility and security issues on ios 6.

Most users haven't had problems with iOS 6, however, some have. I'm still using iOS 5.1.1 on my iPad 2. There is a beta version iOS 6.1 being tested. Don't know when it will be released. When it is released, I'll update.

  • Is it worth upgrading iMac 24" to GEForce 8800 card?

    Greetings!
I am about to configure and order an iMac 24" model as a workstation. My employer, a large university, will pay for the bottom-of-the-line 20" model, but the cost above that comes out of my pocket. I'm definitely going for the larger model, and I am going to max out the RAM in it (I have posted a separate question asking if there is any use for the 2x1 GB RAM sticks I would remove if I buy 3rd party RAM), but the only other thing I am considering is an upgrade to the video card. I would like advice on whether it is worth doing for my use of the machine.
I will use the machine mainly for desktop publishing, mostly text with some graphics mostly involving Photoshop. I don't do video editing, nor am I a gamer. I do plan to drive an external monitor with the iMac; I have a 22" WS LCD monitor that I am currently using with a G5 DP 2GB machine I am upgrading from, and I want to keep it for additional real estate.
I would guess that I don't need the upgraded video card for this use BUT I will not be able to upgrade the computer further for 3 years. So I am thinking that the prime reason for the video card, if I pay for it (it costs me $135 extra) would be to allow for higher-end demands on the video performance in Snow Leopard or even beyond.
So the real question is whether participants in this forum have any strong sense whether three years from now I'd be happier with the upgraded video card, or whether it wouldn't make any difference to me even then.
Thanks in advance for any informed suggestions!
    George Fowler

I spec'd out new iMacs and drove myself rather crazy trying to decide which iMac to get. I use my mac very similarly (PS, FCP, Logic Express). I'm not a gamer but figured that it would be best to by the best I could afford and opted for the 3.06/Geforce 8800/750 Gig HD don't regret it at all. It is smokin' fast with all these apps. Rendering is quick as well as converting video.
I also figured that if I didn't by the top model I would forever be second guessing myself as to how much faster the 3.06 machine with 8800 graphics would be. I know there have been a few benchmarks that show the Radeon 256 card is faster for graphics work, but I think it is minimal and the Geforce 8800 will likely last much longer in the minimum system requirements department with futures OS's and Pro Apps.
I love this machine and think it is worth every penny! I was a little afraid that the display may have some bright/dark spots as I've seen in other posts, but I can't tell. The glossy display doesn't bother me at all either. These were all concerns I had before purchasing this iMac, but have all been dispelled completely. I say go with the flagship model... you will be happy!
    Peace

  • Is it really worth upgrading nForce into nF2??

    posted by jand,
    Quote
    sigh... no it is not...
just reflecting that my poor nForce will be considered old and it didn't even have the chance to be a 1 year old....
oh the humanity! can't a poor motherboard get the chance to grow old gracefully? must we boot it out of the door before it even reached their prime??
    Oh well, cest la vie.
ps: i was hoping that my nforce would miraculously transform into an nforce2 but i guess that won't be possible.
nvidia haven't thought them how to evolve yet
Markoul's Opinion: I believe, and despite what idea MSI likes to promote to the forum, that it is NOT worth the money unless you are desperate for a feature not in the original nForce. These are:
    -Integrated GF4MX
    - Support of new line of AthlonXP processors T/bred B' (166MHz FSB) thus AthlonXP 2700+(2.15GHz) and 2800+
    (2.24GHz)
-PC3200 (400MHz) DDR Memory Support (up to 3Gigs)
    -Firewire support
    -USB 2.0 support
    -ATA 133
    -AGP X8
-dual NIC's and router, additional to the integrated in the chipset nVidia NIC there is now also possible the use of a second  NIC depending on the board manufacturer working simultaneously via an integrated router.
-Lastly, depending on the board manufacturer, the possibility of 6 on-board analog Audio outputs (no need for a CNR) or/and an optical SPIDIF(?)
That's all it really is. So if you still can not hold your horses then be my guest and GO ON spend your beans in upgrading your very aged out nForce :P (not even a year long) into a new miraculous nForce2 which assuming you will not upgrade CPU, will give you a whole 10% boost maximum in real life applications....WOW!! :P  :P ...i am impressed.
Nevertheless, not to be misunderstood, for the rest of the people (not already owning a nForce) nForce 2 is the ultimate Athlon CPU platform so far and the best upgrade someone can possible do. Especially for VIA guys :D
......I never in my life upgraded h/w within a year and possible never will. Never, really a Geek and always like to get my money back with time. Not really a consuming freak....sorry :P
So, i am not convinced upgrading nForce into nForce2, any different opinions are most welcome.
    Markoul

    hi all,
    thanks for the comments.
Yup markoul, you're right and definitely have no plans to purchase an nForce2 as i'm still satisfied with my current one and the only weak link now is the int. GF2MX vid card.
Most of my friends are complaining that i'm underutilising my cpu anyway.... and i'm a guy who just upg. my pc for the first time in 5 years (yes, i was on a pentium based machine) so u could say i'm a slow tech adopter.
However i usually go for the std base platform at the time and i thought nforce will give me the best bang for the buck as it comes with int. GF2mx as i don't want to invest so soon on an external card yet with all the goodies on the horizon though most ppl don't understand why i stuck with this nforce.
I'm setting my eyes on the next 'evolution' and that's the clawhammer and if they are going to delay it, then by all means... better late with solid support rather than a finicky system.
    Here's my wishlist:
    1) an self-evolving system... hehe.. a system that gets better each time u use it..
    2) vid cards that are socketed so u could change the VPU/GPU like mobos & cpus ... that'll be interesting but i think we'll need the vid card market to mature in size like the cpu market
