Is iTunes 6 unstable?

I have been using iTunes since the early 4.0 releases and haven't had a problem with them. I upgraded to version 6 today, and as soon as it loads up it crashes - and asks me to send an error report.
Has anyone else had this problem. I can't do anything with it - i can't update my iPod..
Is version 6 unstable or have i done something very wrong?

hi Andrew!
I upgraded to version 6 today, and as soon as it loads up it crashes - and asks me to send an error report.
was that an "itunes has encountered an error ..." message? if so, first check to see if you've got a broken QuickTime. will your Quicktime launch?
b if it doesn't launch:
download and save to your hard drive a copy of the QT standalone installer. (we'll run the installation from there rather than on line.) switch off both your antivirus and antispyware prior to the install.

  • ITunes is unstable

Bought the 60G iPod and started uploading my CD collection some days ago with iTunes 4.7 and iPod 1.2 SW versions. After a couple of imported CD's the iTunes got unstable. It takes now several minutes after iTunes detects the iPod which Win2k detects immediately, sometimes the iTunes can not connect to the CDDB and sometimes it crashes completely. So I upgraded to the latest version 5.0 some days ago. This worked fine but the problems are still there. It still takes ages until the iPod is detected and it is still unstable and quite often can not connect to the CDDB. This has nothing to do with connectivity as I tried in parallel a CDDB request with another program which worked fine.
Any ideas what the hack is going on here?

  • Can't buy music with iTunes... and more

Dear Apple-people: Don't you test your software before you release it?
    1) With the new iTunes 6.0.0.18 I can no longer buy music from the iTunes Music Store!
When I add a song to my shopping cart, I get an error message saying that "An error occured...".
However, the song or album actually gets into my shopping cart!
When I try to buy what's in the shopping cart, I get another "An error occured...", an iTunes won't let me buy/download the music.
    2) After the release of iTunes 5.x I complained about not being able to transfer more than two songs from my library to my iPod Shuffle 1Gb at a time.
Apple.com never gave me any solution other than: "Try and restore your iPod".
Yes... that was the first thing I tried before posting my complaints here.
Now, after I installed iTunes-6.0.0.18, things are no better. When I try to transfer more than a few songs to my iPod, iTunes quickly disconnects and shortly after reconnects my iPod, and the transfer is cancelled.
However, if I transfer only one or two songs at a time, I can actually manage to put songs on my iPod, but I'm telling you... it's not acceptable.
iTunes version 4.x worked without problems.
What have you done in order to make the new iTunes so unstable?
It seems that every new release has new bugs in it.
Sorry about the brusk tone, but I am highly disappointed!
    Don't you test your software?
Has Apple been bought by Microsoft?
    What is going on?
And just for reference: no, there is nothing wrong with my USB. I have a digital camera, a memory stick, a scanner, a printer and an external hard drive, all connecting via usb, and all work fine.
    Looking forward to solutions!

  • ITunes has stopped working on my system since 10.4....

As I've been doing system updates, I reached a point where iTunes became unstable at best, and not functional since 10.5. I was wondering if my video card is out dated and causing the problem, or is my library in the wrong location. My hard drive crashed when I made the transition to Leopard which was replaced, and I still have encountered the same problems with iTunes. Now when I open iTunes, I get the menu items at the top, without any window or choices in the menu. All system updates have been completed. I'd appreciate any help or advice.

What version of iTunes are you using?
Is your QuickTime up to date?

  • Since updating itunes to 10.1.x downloads went from minutes to many hours

I have a business class internet service which provides 25 mbps down and over 10 mbps up.
Before updating to itunes 10.4.x, an HD tv episode would download in a few minutes, always less than 10 minutes.
    Since updating
    1) itunes became unstable and crashed regularly
    2) it refused to play ANY HD video.
    3) downloads from the istore went from a few minutes per episode to many hours
I did all the normal fixes
    itunes repair
    itunes deinstall and reinstall
itunes and quicktime deinstall and reinstall
    rebuilt itunes library
    rebooted numerous times
    rebooted cable modem
checked speed and verified minimum speed out of several tests was 12mbps
observed download performance in itunes where download started at 2-3 mpbs but rapidly dropped off to 50 - 100 kbps
monitored network performance and observed that most of the time the itunes client is waiting for inputs from itunes store server.
Generated a trouble ticket and have been through 3 levels of "go try this" with no improvement.  At the stage where maybe I might get access to an actual support tech.
I am coming to the conclusion that this is a problem at the source where the server servicing the download is either very busy or slow which is creating a long wait period between packets.  Basically my itunes client is sitting and waiting on the store for 9 hours to perform what used to be a 15 minute download.
Is anyone else seeing this problem?  Does anyone have a recommended fix?

Thank you for your reply. I resolved with advice from 4 year old post instructing "holding down option key while restsrting iTunes and choose the preferred library", but  thank you again,

This solved everything, after uninstalling IObit Advanced SystemCare iTunes would open with Bonjour enabled however iTunes wouldn't pick up the iPhone device. I did some more digging and a few of their other applications had been installed including Game Booster. Uninstalling that put everything back to normal.
I have been given a new device by Apple who were really helpful and the guys have neever seen the docking connector disabling before. Coinsidence?
Anyway in case this helps other people these were the symptoms (might help with searches):
    - Windows 7 Ultimate 64bit
    - iTunes 10 wouldn't open originally, just egg timer then nothing yet processes all started
    - Docking connector died on the device, wouldn't even trigger a standard USB connection or light up the device
    - Uninstalling iTunes etc didn't change anything
    - Disabling Bonjour worked but iTunes extremely unstable, seems frozen when syncing and the sync itself, especially with app transfer, was extremely slow and the other buttons were unresponsive after clicking for two minutes before screen would change
Have sent feedback to IObit about this to see if there isn't something that can be done.
Fantastic assistance and an incredible spot from b noir. If you come to the UK you need to drop me an email as I owe you a night out on the town!

  • "Files in use" error when trying 1.2 update in iTunes 7.0

When iTunes 7.0 comes up, it says that an update is available (I've got 1.1.2 on my iPod) and asks if I want to update to 1.2. I click "Install" and my iPod comes out of the "updating" state, then re-enters it, then iTunes puts up a dialog with the msg: "The iPod cannot be updated because it contains files that are in use by another application." HAH! The only thing in use is iTunes. I've disconnected contacts update with Outlook, made sure Outlook is not running in Task Mgr, etc. AFter clicking "OK", my iPod stays perpetually updating, though iTunes says it is finished. I disconnect after I hear the iPod hard drive power down and all seems ok. Apple's iPod update integration with iTunes is unstable (witness all problem posts). They should at least bring back manual update for those of us who don't mind doing it that way. Anyone else have this problem and have a solution???

Success! At least my iPod finally updated and no longer hangs in 'Update' mode forever. Here's what I did:
    * Follow instructions at http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=93716
I did everthing up to and including "Empty your Temp directory and restart"
    * After installing and starting iTunes, my iPod updated songs, etc. normally.
    * I clicked on update btn. Got and "updating iPod" msg box.
    * Got an error 1417, and iPod no longer appeared in iTunes.
    * Shut down iTunes and restarted.
    * iPod updated songs, etc. normally.
    * Clicked on update btn. got "updating iPOd" msg box and this time it actually worked.
    * I think it was an accident that it actually worked, but you might try this yourself. It shouldn't have been this difficult.

  • Itunes Crashes regularly

Is It Just Me or is the new Itunes 7 unstable? It freezes just about every session I use it. Anybody else having problems? I would love stick with the old one but of course Apple made me switch.

Thanks to everyone who responded back to confirm my worst fears.
I feel somewhat like of a fool for being so trusting during the past five iTunes version updates. As I've always overwritten the iTunesSetup.exe file on my hard disk and never saved the previous versions. Since installing iTunes v6, I won't make that mistake again.
If it wouldn't be too much trouble, could someone PLEASE send me a copy of the old version of iTunes 5.0.1 (of course it is no longer available on the Apple site.....grrr).
You can rename the file as a .EX_ and use the web site www.yousendit.com and use my e-mail address [email protected]
I'll wait for a future much patched version of iTunes v6 before blinding upgrading again.
Thanks in advance for your help.

  • IPhone/iTunes/AppleTV/iPod - Multi-User, Multi-Device, Multi-Issues

    *The Setup* -
    iMac Intel - 2.33/2G Rm/700G HD
    OS - 10.4.10
    iTunes - 7.4.2
    2 iPhone (8g) - 1.1.1
    1 iPod (60g) - 1.2.1
    2 Apple TV's - 1.1
    Shared Music/Photos
Connected via USB through Self-powered USB Hub
    Wireless - 802.11n Apple Extreme
    *Shared Files*
Music/Photos placed in Shared Folder outside of each users Home Folder. Permissions set to system with r/w for both uses who have Admin rights.
iTunes library is independent, allowing for creation of own playlist. Additions to library are done by drag/drop of Music folder to import added songs/video
iPhoto library is setup in the shared folder as well with permissions updated for all photos to system with r/w for both users.
    *The Issues*
    1. _First to sync, first to own_ - Once one user syncs iphone to iPhoto, second user can not. "Not Enough Permissions" error appears when second user attempts to do so.  Deleting iPod photo cache each time iphone is sync'd seems to be only work around.
    2. _In the Sync, down the drain_ - I have four devices that could be syncing at one time, 2 Apple TVs, 1 iPod and 1 iPhone.. I am finding that if all are syncing at the same time iTunes becomes unstable and crashes.  Once iPhone stops syncing issue resolves and iPod and Apple TVs complete without issue.
    3. _You own what you import_ - This is more of a request than a issue. Photo's brought in to the same shared iPhoto library by difference users on the same system are owned by that user, though the library is set "system" rights, new photos are not updated with this setting.   I would to see a preference for this option in iPhoto and iTunes, when library's are shared, new imports are updated to reflect that state.

I finally found this. It is the same question and I didn't find it at the time I opened my discussion. https://discussions.apple.com/thread/4431992?start=0&tstart=0
Looks like I am not the only one to be locked out of iTunes Match

  • Help, My iPod just turns on and off...my PC doesn't even get to "see" it.

I just got the 5G 60 Gig iPod. I was charging it for the first time. And of course windows wanted to jump on in. iTunes started up and wanted to transfer music, the unit wanted it's initial setup, but iTunes switched it over to th Do Not Disconnect mode. I got the register your new iPod screens to come up, then music started automatically transfering. Then I got I must reboot my computer screen...I ignored it, figuring it had to finish getting the music transfered. Then about a 1/3 into the music tansfer, I got some kind of could not find error concening the music, then my computer stopped doing anything. I did a restart, no all my iPod does is turn on and off by itself, (from the Apple icon, to back off) and won't stop doing it. I tried resetting the unit, but then it still continues. Connecting and reconnecting the USB cable, restarting the PC etc....Help, what do I do. Frustrated is beyond what I'm feeling right now...I keep thinking what the **** I just spent, for this to be the end result!! Is this unit fried? Or will it get damaged!!! HELP

I had exactly the same issue when connecting my new BLACK 60mb Video iPod to connect to my PC via USB 2.0.
The iPod kept Crashing & Freezing also iTunes become unstable and very slow, it kept saying "unable to write to disk" every 5 minutes and I had to disconnect & re-connect for the same message to show again in 5 mins later, it eventually told me not to disconnect the iPod. However, after 30 mins i just did it.
I then opened iPod updater and re-attached my ipod with USB 1.
This seemed to take an age to recognise (5 mins +) but bear with it. Once it was connected I reinstated to factory settings, once I did this it automatically told me to update my software to 1.1.1.
When I then opened iTunes it again took 5 mins to connect, but it then started to transfer my music, which took over 6 hours to do 22MB.
Having said that I have had no "can not write messages"
Today I have conencted (again taking 5 mins to connect) but it has transfered over 1000 photos in under 4 mins and updated all tunes.
    hope this helps,

  • Conversion from Musicmatch Jukebox

When I first got my iPod I was using Musicmatch (iTunes was unstable) and burned 1/2 my collection that way. Now my entire collection is there and everything is under iTunes (all in mp3 format). Using 'get CD track names' it will sometimes say - not imported with iTunes - import again. Is there any way around this? I just want to standardize my entire library without having to re-burn everything. Musicmatch had utilities to name/re-name the file according to the track names etc... I want to make sure all of the genre info ect are up to date and re-organize things.
Is this just part of the - my way or the highway - apple philosphy?

Hi Kurt & welcome to the discussions:
Been there. Used music match with my original iPod. When I received the replacement under Apple's battery program, I had to update the firmware on the ipod and switch to iTunes. I had my entire library of 19,000 mp3's on an external HD and had used this with music match for over a year. In just pointed the iTunes program to the right folder on the external HD and all worked fine. Itunes is really easy to use in changing artist, song or genre info for a single mp3 or large groups of files. You'll get used to it and learn to like it too, I predict.
Post back if you have specific use problems and I will try to help you get over the learning hump.
    Good Luck,
    Larry

  • Very slow podcast downloads since 10.4.11 update

All Downloading has been fast until the new update to 10.4.11 the other night. 55mb and 63mb which use to take 3-4 minutes now take 2 hrs or more and a 228mb podcast download showing over 9 hrs. Never had this problem before and it is new since upgrade. Anyone else having this problem or found a fix to it.

I have experienced the same problem.  I have several season passes to TV shows which previously downloaded in 10-15 minutes.  Now each episode is taking 7-10 hours to download.  I have been through every recommended fix including deinstalling itunes and reinstalling it, rebuilding the library, restarting my cable modem etc.  When I first installed the update, itunes became unstable and crashed several times forcing a reboot.  I did a repair which failed to fix the problem.  Only after I deinstalled and reinstalled a clean version of itunes FOR THE SECOND TIME did itunes become stable again.
However the download speeds are unacceptably slow.
I contacted itunes tech support, went through two levels of non-tech support and have an open trouble ticket currently.
I have a commercial account at home which provides 25mbps download speed.  Currently itunes is downloading at between 50kbps and 250 kbps.  I have monitored the network performance and its a sawtooth waveform that indicates that my client asks for a download, waits for several milliseconds, then itunes store sends a packet, itunes client asks again, and there is another pause.  it appears to me based on viewing the network performance that the itunes store is just sitting there for a "long" period of time between each transmission that is resulting in this huge loss in performance.
if anyone has any thoughts on this I would appreciate hearing them.

  • 5.0 Aesthetic Value: U.G.L.Y.!!!

    I want 4.9 back!!!
The 5.0 skin is boxy and completely space inefficient; the title bar is strangely flat and the display has been squished into this ugly rectangular thing. The programs skinning iTunes are unstable, or I would skin it already! I miss the curves of 4.9 already, and I've been using 5.0 for what, 30 seconds?
Does anyone still have a copy of iTunes 4.9?

    Thank you so much!
I'd been trying to google myself a copy, but the links kept redirecting me to the new program.
I do actually appreciate the slightly smarter functions, but it's not worth the painful visuals - the old one blended with my desktop, the new one sticks out like a sore thumb... but enough on that.
Will have to find a way to back up those 10 GB of songs before I try anything though. Shall kill a few CD-Rs. Heh.

  • Does anyone know why i can't watch movies from 1channel

does anyone know why movies from 1channel wont play on my mac book

Now you've really lost me.  How did we change the subject from not being able to play any movies from ichannel to being able to see the movie but not have sound to now iTunes not wanting to play downloaded movies.
Sounds to me like you have multiple issues... focus on one thing at one time.
Do ichannel movies play on your Mac without issues?
Are you trying to play stuff off your Mac onto your TV and are having video or sound issues?  How are you connecting the Mac to your TV?  (Output and cable usage, etc.)
In iTunes once a movie finishes downloading, it'll be listed in your Movie section, just click play from there.  It should play unless iTunes is unstable or something.  Quitting the app and restarting it via the iTunes menu should fix this unless the app itself has other issues.
