Is iTunes changing my OS X desktop picture momentarily?

I am running a clean install OS X, including my third-party applications, and this five-year-old machine has never run better. However, an anomaly has arisen. Whenever I push play (iTunes) my desktop picture disappears briefly, replaced by a neutral gray screen, before reappearing.
As I write this, I quit and re-launched iTunes and the problem still exists. I am loathe to restart my computer as I am in the middle of some pressing business. I will check back if a restart resolves this issue, otherwise, feel free to comment.
With iTunes running, pushing Play starts the song and one-second later my desktop picture disappears briefly. Pushing the button (Pause) again stops the song but nothing else happens.
I am currently listening to iTunes DJ and just now the O'Jays started playing and without my doing anything, the desktop picture disappeared and reappeared. I have iShowUHD and will make a recording of it, if it continues.
TIA

You're very welcome.
Completely unrelated, albeit unsettlingly too coincidental, was a sudden slow down (freezing) of my Safari and other internet functions. It's like a UFO landed on my roof and scrambled my Mac's internal settings. Apparently, this same UFO flew across the state, because this occurred simultaneously with 3 different people, me and 2 of my friends, all in 3 seperate counties.
The other things we had to do to get our Macs back to resembling "normal" was...
Turn OFF iCloud unless you really need it (you could lose all Calendar events - Thanks, Apple!) or you're using a screamingly fast connection. - It ties up your modem, especially DSL.
Make your first DNS entry "2001:4860:4860::8888". - It speeds up accessing webpages. (Without quotes. Yes, there is a colon-colon, it's not an error. Weird numbers, I know.)
Set your ethernet's MTU to "Manual" with a number lower than 1500. Try "1460". - Apparently, your Mac is trying to bite off more than it can chew. MTU is the maximum ethernet byte size.
I found all of these tips scattered within the Apple Discussion areas. Do a search on them for more information on how to make these adjustments (don't worry, just system prefs changes, no UNIX is necessary).
This could apply to only older (more than 3 years) Macs. Still a pain nonetheless.
Side note: Starting at the sametime, 2 of us are experiencing random system-wide Kernal Panics and freezing. One Mac panics over 8 times per day, the other about once every 2 days. If our 7th trip (in 2 months) to the Genius bar miraculaously nets a solution, I'll post it.
If you are a conspiracy theorist, you'd be in heaven. An undisclosed virus? ...from Microsoft? Apple or Intel (both?) intentionally crippling old Macs, and forcing purchasing of new computers? ... and is this a test for installing (BIOS) programmed obsolescence/aging into current computers? Why no offer for replacement after 6 failed repair attempts? Is Apple quietly reducing expensive programming staff (sloppy coding, numerous updates, no OSX Server, reduced Pro apps, just as MS is dying) with cheap unknowledgeable retail staff? Mountain Lion and iTunes 11, more eye candy, less innovation... much like MS Windows 8.   Something's afoot.

  • I am looking for an app that will allow me to change the times on my desktop  pictures

I am wanting an app that will allow me more choices in changing the "change time" of my desktop pictures. 5 seconds in too fast, one minute longer than i want. I am looking for something that will give me a 10-15 second time.
    Any suggestions?

  • My dock would not appear. No change after a restart. After force quitting applications in order to log out all I have now is my account desktop picture and a cursur that moves okay but no icons.

My dock would not appear. Checked preferences, they seemed to be locked. No change after a restart. Tried logging out of account, had to force quit several applications. Now all I have is the account desktop picture and a cusur that works okay. nothing else is on the desktop now. How do I restore?

All I had to do was complain.  I synced my iPhone to the Windows machine, checked the other account at iTunes prompting (where no apps had shown up previously), reconnected the iPad, and 140 apps downloaded including the App Store.  I have no idea why.

  • Quitting iTunes changes my desktop (can someone else try?)

If I change my desktop picture while iTunes is running then when I quit iTunes my desktop reverts to the picture it had before I started iTunes. Pretty weird. Can someone else try this?
I noticed this the for the first time after updating to 10.4.3 last night. I can't say for sure if I'd ever done this exact sequence before the update.

Same problem - except my whole desktop goes back to defauylt - my files and iTunes and applications are under a username1, username 2, username3, etc. each time I logoff and log back on. I tried the username_new and idisk restore and notheing helps. It's like Groundhog Day (the Bill Murray movie) -- I configure my desktop, restore my Dock with my apps, reimport my iTunes library and then logoff and back on and it all 'disappears' and goes back to like it was when I first got it out of the box. I upgraded to 10.4.4.

  • How do I change my Desktop Picture to a solid color?

Hello folks, I'm trying to change my desktop picture to a solid black color in Leopard. How do I do that? I went into the desktop preferences under System Preferences but under solid colors, they do not have black. And I have no idea how to add more colors to the few selections there. Can someone help me out please? Thank you.

That's one idea, they have a solid black .png file on there, and you can either set it as your desktop and tile it, or follow their instructions.

  • HOw do I change the desktop pictures on macbook air?

I simply can not change the desktop pictures on my macbook air. If anyone  knows please help. Thanks.

Right-Click Desktop, Choose "Change Desktop Background..."
There you can choose the desktop image. If you want a custom one,
    Choose "Set Desktop Picture".

  • How do I change the desktop picture on *all* windows with Lion?

I'm sure I'm just missing a simple setting, but ...  I changed the desktop background to something I found I thought I'd like, using right click/use as desktop background.  Didn't like it.  Went to System prefs to change it, and selected the Pond Reeds pic that comes preloaded with Lion.  Great!  Except it only changed it to that in one workspace.  All the others still have the background I don't like, and going to each workspace, right clicking and choosing "change desktop picture" just shoots me back to the system prefs workspace and doesn't change anything.  What's the right answer   (It's an older MacBook Pro, but running Lion, just upgraded to it a few days ago.)

Thank you!!!  I knew it must be something simple, that I just haven't had time to figure out yet (the day after I upgraded, my son went into the hospital and had to have heart surgery, so I haven't spent a lot of time getting to know Lion.).  Your help is much much appreciated!

  • Changing desktop picture every 1 second instead of 5

    Hi All,
I'm opening a retail store and we're using 30 inch cinema displays for our menu boards. I'd like to use OS X's built-in "change desktop picture" to display our image, but would like it to change images every 1 second instead of 5.
Is there a way to modify the OS to do this?
    Thanks,
    - Mike

Install either the Developer Tools or download the Server Admin Tools onto your computer; in either case, find and open the Property List Editor, and open the file named com.apple.desktop.plist in your home folder with it. Inside this file, there will be two or more instances of ChangeTime; change the number associated with all instances of this key to 1.

  • Desktop Pictures: "Change Pictures" in System Prefs no longer works.

I used to have my Desktop pictures change every five minutes using a special folder of photos. This function no longer works. The setting appears to be in effect according to the System Preferences Desktop Pictures Pane but the function appears to be broken in 10.4.5. I have trashed the Destop Pictures Preferences file in the Preferences Folder, but it still will not work.
Can anyone using Tiger 10.4.5 get this to work?
    Griff

    OK, that was really dumb!
The reason for the problem became abundantly clear when I quit Pathfinder. Suddenly the picture change became functional again.
So, I guess Pathfinder will not follow the Finder when it comes to settings like this.
Hey Cocoatech, how about getting this into your next release?

  • Desktop pictures do NOT rotate/change on secondary display

For some peculiar reason, my desktop pictures do NOT change / rotate on my secondary display.
I have a MacBook Pro 15" (Late 2007) running Snow Leopard 10.6.2 and I have dual displays. My primary display (the MBP screen) DOES change / rotate picture every minute, but I want my secondary display to do the same.
It seems that restarting does fix it, but only temporarily. I think it might have to do with plugging/unplugging the secondary display and sometimes if it's working, I disconnect and reconnect the monitor and then the pictures stop rotating.
All my desktop picture settings are correct in System Preferences. I tried unchecking then rechecking the "Change picture:" checkmark, but that doesn't fix anything. I also tried clicking on different folders in the left column of the Pref Pane, then clicking back on my chosen desktop pictures folder.
Any help would be greatly appreciated! Thank you!

I discovered that for this particular file if you check the "random order" box under Desktop preferences, then the pictures will rotate like the rest of the photo files in the collection

  • My desktop picture is stuck in the stretch mode and I can't seem to change it. How do I change it?

my desktop picture is stuck in stretch mode and I can't seem to change it.  Help!!

Hewlett Packard already knew about this problem and they have also published a fix to solve the problem of wallpaper stucking on stretch mode. Download the hot fix from the ftp site here: ftp://ftp.hp.com/pub/softpaq/sp45501-46000/sp45575.exe. This package changes the Wallpaper Picture Position function from Stretched to Fill, Fit, Tile, or Center.

  • Desktop Picture Changes to Solid Blue Automatically

I have never seen this problem. I have had one of Apple's standard black and white pictures as my desktop for years. All of a sudden (don't recall any changes to system) my desktop is solid "Apple" blue. If I change it to anything else it reverts back to the solid blue within a few minutes. I tried opening the console and viewing all messages to see if I could get a clue to what system call might be change it but I saw no messages occur as I observed the desktop picture being changed.
Can anyone tell me how I might track down what is changing my desktop picture?

Thanks, I should have thought of that.
I tried it and it didn't work. My desktop picture changed almost immediately after logging in. but it did lead to the solution. I noticed that the desktop picture changed at the same time as Entourage Alert's launched (this was turned on the same day that the problem started. So I turned off Entourage Alerts and logged in and out. The desktop picture has remained as selected.
I'm not interested in running Entourage so I don't care about the bug.

  • Desktop picture suddenly changed by itself

I woke up the morning turned on my mac and booted it to find that the desktop picture was the blue galaxy.
When I shut it down last night it was set to the purple nebula as far as I can recall. I havent enabled "change desktop picture every 30 minutes" so I'm very puzzled as to why it has randomly changed itself. The only I did yesterday was install a couple of Apps from the App store. A photo duplicate finder - and an application uninstaller...
I'm almost wondering if I have downloaded a trojan or back door open - ridiculous I know as my security is pretty paranoid and none of my safeguards has reported anything, nor do I get software from non official sources, but I'm at a loss to figure how this has suddenly changed iteslf... I mean computers don't do that... do they?
Anyone who can explain what has happened I will be very grateful.

There's a bug that changes the wallpaper to the default one after each startup. To test this, open System Preferences > Desktop & Screen Saver, and see if you can open it.
Try deleting the Desktop settings file. Open a Finder window, select Go menu (on the menu bar) > Go to Folder, and type ~/Library/Preferences. Then, delete "com.apple.desktop.plist" and "com.apple.systempreferences.plist", and restart. Finally, change your background

    Hello, sounds like maybe this...
OS X: System Preferences stops responding after viewing Desktop & Screen Saver pane
    Products Affected
OS X Lion, OS X Mountain Lion, iPhoto
    Symptoms
System Preferences may stop responding if you select an iPhoto Event that is no longer available in iPhoto as the source for your desktop picture.
    Resolution
        1.    Quit System Preferences if it's running.

If System Preferences is running but not responding, choose Force Quit from the Apple menu, or right-click its icon on the Dock and choose "Force Quit".
        2.    Open iPhoto.
        3.    Select Events in the Source list (on the left side of the iPhoto window).
        4.    Double-click on any of the events shown. Verify that the name or date of this event is now shown under RECENT in the Source list.
        5.    Choose Apple menu () > System Preferences.
        6.    Click Desktop & Screen Saver, click on Desktop, and verify that you can now select a new desktop picture.
