Is iTunes64Setup.exe really 64-bit?

For a new install of Windows 7 Pro 64-bit, I downloaded iTunes64Setup.exe without being asked if I wanted 64- or 32-bit. But upon installing, it put itself into "Program Files (x86)." Isn't this where the 32-bit programs go to live?

Vista seems to be getting better slowly but there are still people having issues with it alongside MAX, XSI, various graphics driver issues, certain old hardware not getting driver update support etc. plus it uses more RAM as a general OS overhead, leaving you less for your work. There are many, many reasons why a lot of us are sticking with XP for now.
I should mention probably the biggest reason - if you already have a load of machines with XP Pro 64 on, all set up for your render farm with a perfect network going, you don't really want to be buying a bunch of licenses of Vista and risk it all going down the pan in the process. For instance I'm just a 1-man freelance shop, but I have 6 machines all in a tight-as-hell XP64 network - that would cost me around £500 plus to upgrade to Vista, hours of pain setting it all up again (and we know how crappy Vista's network management is now, over XP - it's almost like it's in dummy mode!) and who knows what other issues.
The sorry fact is that XP64 is and always has been a "black hole" for developers (hardware and software). They didn't like the sudden move to 64-bit, chose to wait a dev cycle (ultimately until vista 64 came out) and now suddenly it's all the rage and being supported properly, leaving us XP64 users in the annoying position of having virtually 0 support from anybody for our software or hardware for the next year or so (i say the next year or so as I expect most of us will have moved to Vista by then). I've lost count of the number of times I've had to google for workarounds to installing/using applications or hardware.
It's a hassle, but ultimately less hassle in the short term than switching to Vista. I'll leave that for maybe another 6 months I think.

  • Opening iTunes64Setup.exe on my Windows 7 64-bit system does nothing when running as normal or administrator user. Nothing means no error messages - just nothing.

I'm trying to install iTunes64Setup.exe (10.7.0.21) version on my Windows 7 system and nothing happens with I try to run the exe. If I run as admin, I get the UAC dialog andclick ok - and nothing happens after that. When I downloaded the exe, I went to the Properties for the setup file and clicked the Unblock button so to get around some of the other issues that people reported - no luck running. I tried running Microsoft FixIt for installation issues - http://support.microsoft.com/mats/Program_Install_and_Uninstall/ and no luck after that. In all cases, I try to open it - the mouse cursor spins for less than a second - and nothing happens. I don't see any processes running in Task Manager. I've also tried manually starting the Windows Modular Installer and then running setup. I've tried downloading the exe from another computer to see if it was a bad download and both files do the same thing. The size of the downloaded file is 76.7 MB (80,521,624 bytes). I was able to run the same exe from my other computer running Windows 7 64-bit OS.
    Help!

ok - I setup with a clean boot using msconfig.exe as suggested and disabled all the Microsoft Services and unchecked the Load Startup items, accepted the changes and rebooted. I then tried running the itunes64setup.exe again, and this time - there was a very slight change in behavior - a thin dialog - what looked like a progress indicated displayed on my main display for about .5 sec and then went away - no text in the box. I ran setup again - this time from a USB stick - the little progress indicator stayed up on the screen for about 1.5 sec and I could see a grren bar on the left grow about 1/10th into the progress bar until in disapperared and nothing else happened. What's next?
    Thanks,
    Bill

  • I tried to download latest iTunes.  When I click download, my Firefox pops-up a windows asking me save the "iTunes64Setup.exe" file on my compuer in a local drive. However, nothing happens after that. I tried with different browsers, but no luck.

It's really funnt...but I see that it is really happening to many. Has anyone found a solution for this?

Finally, I did wget <url> from my bash shell (on my linux machine)  and could download iTunes 11 64-bit for windows 7. Here is the exact command (should be useful as getting the URL is sometimes tricky)
    wget http://secure-appldnld.apple.com/iTunes11/031-1547.20131105.FFjvT/iTunes64Setup.exe
I would expect this to work as is even from windows/MAC provided you have 'wget' command on it.
    Cheers !

  • New 7.6 iTunes64Setup.exe "The installer encountered errors before iTunes..

I am using Vista 64 bit. Used 64 bit IE to download the proper file
    iTunes64Setup.exe
    from
    http://www.apple.com/itunes/download/
But I get this error when I try to install:
The installer encountered errors before iTunes could be configured.
To retry these operations at a later time, please run the installer again.
Click Finish to exit the installer.
I tried installing when logged in as an administrator, and again as a a user, again same results. I tried uninstalling 32 bit iTunes 7.5 and rebooting, but the issue still remains. I manually wiped away the
    c:\Program Files (x86)\iTunes
directory (had only one file in there after uninstall), same problem.
FYI, this is just my secondary machine, so I'm not worried about loosing anything. So registry cleaning likely. But first, I'll try installing on a pristine 64 bit Vista virtual machine, just to see if the installer binary itself runs correctly on a machine without a history of iTunes 32 bit.
Is this a known issue with 7.6 64 bit? Is there a workaround?
There are many search hits for similar errors under 7.5 32 bit, but I seem to be alone with this error with 64 bit installer, for now...

FYI, I downloaded iTunes64Setup.exe again (not from cache), despite same exact filesize on my hard drive, this time, no install error, problem solved. So perhaps Apple uses no built-in CRC error detection, but at least it works now. I'm so glad 64 bit Vista is finally properly supported without errors about CD burning when you start it (I never bothered with the gear drivers workaround).
I did notice it still installs in the
    C:\Program Files (x86)\iTunes
directory despite being a 64 bit app, not sure if that matters, and not sure if it's a side effect of having 32 bit version in that directory previously.

  • 64bit iTunes64Setup installing in 32-bit Program Files (x86)

Is Apple's 64bit ITunes being blocked by Windows?
Why is iTunes64Setup.exe asking permission to install in 32bit app folder C:\Program Files (x86)\ in Windows 8 64-bit?
Is Apple holding back on Windows?
A weird thing happened with my latest Windows 8 system OS instalaltion (BTW on a nice platform with 8.1 Windows performance rating).
ITunes was not installed on this 64bit system only Windows and a few 64bit apps installed in C:\Program Files\.
Only music files inside the ITunes folder would play in Windows Media Player. Copy-move in-out reboot shutdown etc.
    As if "ITunes footprint..."
Quoting Microsoft tier 2 engineer, who shared some thought with me today.
Did Apple or Microsoft or both activate something?
Most Bing and Google searches for "64bit ITunes" result blogs complaining of  bugs, typical newbie computer owner stuff.
But today, so many bugs where no two blogers have the same problem.
Would iTunes64Setup.exe install without bugs if it used the default 64bit app folder C:\Program Files\ in Windows 8?
Hmmm, the only repeater blogs complained that music files would not play for countless reasons.
My expert query is obvious: why Program Files (x86) and not Program Files?
If ever there was a red herring, that is it: Windows 8 does not prompt permission from 64bit apps to install into 32bit resources... except with ITunes!
(example, even partially 32bit creative cloud apps like 64Photoshop prompt 64, though they place 32 components in x86\adobe)
This weird install only happens for my pc desktop adobe graphics station.
My Mac Book Pro 64bit (Applecare active) installs in the correct location.
Which kind of falls back into yet another agregious microsoft vs apple war going on?
I have to post here, because there is no Apple telephone suppport for PC screwups, of course.
Please don't let this post go public, already too much trouble.
But a serious inhouse answer would be appreciated. TIA.

EXACTLY! Ditto most of Microsoft's 64bit stuff. But why the prompt to use x86 and not the 64bit folder? If most of tha APP subs are 32, fine. Is there some rule that the components needed for 64 are missing? And what's with Windows Media Player bilking on anything outside my last ITunes install - way when last year some time?
If feedback inspired by Windows tier 3 p. engs goes nowhere, why waste time in a blog. Anyway...

How do I resolve this issue when I try to download iTunes on my laptop?  It fails because of this error message " iTunes64Setup.exe is corrupt or invalid"

That suggests that the installer is getting damaged during the download.
I'd first try downloading an installer from the Apple website using a different web browser:
    http://www.apple.com/itunes/download/
If you use Firefox instead of IE for the download (or vice versa), do you get a working installer?

  • Will not install itunes64setup.exe version 10.5.2.11 x64,  on Vista

I have Vista x64 home, itunes version 10.5.1.42 x64, runs fine.  In itunes I clicked update - itunes software manager downloads & saves one item. Click install 1 item. Brings you right back to the update manager.   Does not even try to install.  Next I downloaded the itunes64setup.exe file (42.92MB - file version10.5.2.
11 x64) to my desktop.  Opened this file, install starts, then I get -  INSTALLER ENCOUNTERED ERRORS BEFORE ITUNES COULD BE CONFIGURED.  Install attempt ends.
How do I get it to update ??  Either method fails.   ?????????
    Bob

I have Windows 7.  The new update tried to install and crashed my iTunes.  I have never had this probelem with iTunes.  I am not sure what is going on over there, but I have been spoiled by the flawless use of iTunes, now, alas, it is failing like other sand becoming unstable and if it keeps doing this after each update, (3rd time now), I am going to dump the whole thing.
Bear in mind, I have had to completely reload this program EVERYTIME a new update happens.  The last time, I even had to dump and re-load my iPod.  Now, this new update I get THIS ERROR:
The installer has encountered an unexpected error installing this package.  This may indicate a problem with this package.  The error code is 2324
There was a time when this app NEVER EVER failed.  Getting a little tired of it now.  It locks up, shuts down inadvertently, stops during a movie while still playing audio, then after a few minutes, the movie takes off in supper speed motion and catches up to the audio.
    Please advise!
